A big week for tapes

The Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin is planning a major release later this week of recorded phone conversations -- and today the National Archives beat them to it -- releasing nearly 200 hours of President Nixon's conversations, bringing the total released so far close to 2,000 hours of conversation. While we can air but a portion of them tonight (we are still plowing through their contents) I recommend spending some time doing the same. They are blunt and profane, (and often hard to hear) and amount to an audio time capsule -- they tell us a lot about the President and our times.

One historic footnote that is often forgotten: we have these tapes of Nixon...because of the system installed by Johnson. When Nixon first visited the White House prior to moving in, Johnson showed him the system, and explained its use and benefits. The rest...is history. I recommend taking a listen.

Thanks for joining us tonight.

Today is Brian's 4th anniversary as anchor of NN. And what an eventful 4 years it has been! Congratulations are in order to Brian and his staff for constantly evolving and adapting to the pace and complexity of the 21st century news milieu. NN has shown an unflinching committment to excellence and to helping us to make sense of the intricacies of the news world under his direction.

Thanks Brian -- may you have many more years in the anchor chair. And that is now only best wishes to you, it is in part a selfish wish!
Have they done anything else with the Rose Mary Woods missing 18 minutes of tape?

Like the "magic" Kennedy assassination bullet the gap in the tape will keep the conspiracy talk going and going.
Brian, I heard some of these comments... I agree!!  You guys (the press) are scumbags!  I wish some of you would investigate the scum that call themselves "unbiased reporters."  For the reporter to say that this shows an example of how out of touch Nixon was, just shows who he is.  Out here in America, we understand that the media, college professors (communists) and the bureaucracy are the enemies of freedom. The true enemies are the people who chose not to report this.
Hi Brian
Looks like the Stock Market is up again today. The Auto Industry needs to figure out a plan and stop wasting time.

I friend called and said Connie Rice was in England on her goodby tour and even played the piano for the Queen. Looks like Foreign Leaders will have to deal with Hillary as Secretary of State without entertainment just business.

I saw the Govenors meet with Obama/Biden today. Our State will have to give up some perks given to the wealthy first. We could have brought down our debt by charging shippers at the ports but Palin told our Govenor not to do it and well he does take orders well. Things got so mad her in Calfornia Arnie set pay rates at $6.55 per hour for State workers. We need an intelligent Govenor quick.

Word is we're in a recession I guess the White House, Paulson and the Fed didn't get the memo in 2007. Or it could have been another lost in translation moment. Yes all over the news we heard NY subways might be attacked during the holiday, while the real message was India would be attacked. Since most of the translators and experienced CIA agents bailout after the White House leaked Valerie Plam's name it makes since mistake would happen.

Oh Brian I taped the show with the interview with my town of Riverside California and made my comments to the new Administration. Yes I told my view from my experiences of this city not the fake story the Mayor told to the Media.

See you same time same place
Brian, Brian, Brian - you stated there is a warning to mothers who may be watering down the formula for their babies.  Further information should have been given to these mothers.  For instance, I believe most states have a WIC programs that give vouchers to pay for the formula for babies.  As the child gets older it also provides cheese, milk, peanut butter and so forth for children.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another fine broadcast this evening! Happy 4year Anniversary of you anchoring the broadcast Mr.Williams!! You always do a fine job everynight! Keep up the excellent work! Regarding the runoff election between between Republican Saxby Chambliss and Democrat Jim Martin I went and voted today. The turnout was light in some areas, but at the precinct where I voted there was a steady flow of people. I have another "I am a Georgia Voter" peach sticker! I hope this time there is a clear winner.
Now to the broadcast. First of all the recollection of the Mumbai attacks by Charles Cannon was simply terrible and I cannot imagine what he experienced and saw at the hotel. My heart goes out to all the innocent victims. It is such a horrible tragedy.

The report by Adrienne Mong about the tainted milk in baby formula is so sad to hear. All those babies becoming sick because of this chemical found in the formula is awful. I certainly hope the child of the parents featured in the report gets better. I hope something can be done to keep more babies from getting sick.
I am happy Former First Lady Barbara Bush is returning home from the hospital. It was nice to see Former President George H. W. Bush speaking about how his wife is doing well.
The report by Mr.Bazell concerning the extremely long hours young doctors are working brings to mind the fact that maybe the hours should be reduced to prevent mistakes because the doctors are far to sleepy and to save lives of patients. It makes sense to allow some sleep time between such long hours of duty in the hospital. Time will tell when changes are made in the field.
The "Our Planet" series tonight by Mr.Sanders of scientists exploring algae as an alternative fuel was interesting. The green slime doesn't look that great, but if it can be converted to fuel then it is doing something good.
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard!
XOXO

I must say I am not too surprised about those Nixon tapes.  I bet there is a lot worse tapes of Nixon that have not aired yet; that man was totally paranoid and mentally unstable.  Do you remember when he pushed a secret service man and almost knocked him down during the height of the Watergate Scandle?  Nixon pushed right in front of the TV cameras.  Richard Nixon held the title for the worst president ever; until George W Bush came along and stole it from him Hands Down.

Are you going to reply re McCaffrey?

Hap Hap Hap Happy Anniversity Brian and team let's just keep it going ok!

Best to my friends Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anna and Matt
To Lisa and all the other Richard Engel fans on the blog: Richard has just appeared on the Rachel Maddow show (9 pm eastern) on MSNBC and this is the second time he has done so. In both appearances he and Rachel engaged in a very interesting discussion of the situation in Afghanistan/Pakistan/India. This time he came equipped with a map. You have all heard/read from Brian about Richard's maps--now I know why. These discussions are lengthy and fascinating and I certainly hope he visits Rachel often in the future. BTW Richard is a lefty.
Mr Williams
For decades our physicians have trained in strict and disaplined environments so that the finished product will have the integrity to perform under the most adverse situations. The more demanding the specialty, the more rigorous the training. Medicine is not a 9 to 5 profession. Training and Resident mistakes are  due to poor supervision, not exhaustion. One needs to be exposed to every possible experience to even begin to have the ability to adequately treat patients. That training does not occur at convenient hours or non holidays. The 3 AM phone call needs to be answered by someone trained and disaplined to answer that call responsibly. If it is sleep that you need, I suggest some other profession.
Jackie:  I hope this Obama link gives you a good laugh.  Don't ask me how I found this doing some
E-bay shopping?   I thought the Obama coin commercials were crazy.  Please tell me you are getting those Obama coin and Obama plate commercials in CA.

(Normand:  The coins and plates are driving me as nuts as the Viagra commercials!)

Just in case you had a few extra dollars for the holidays.    Who buys this stuff?  Maybe Bill will buy one for Hillary or Chelsea.

Why are the television networks still not covering the Pentagon's Iraq War domestic propaganda campaign? Specifically, undisclosed conflicts of interest with Gen. Barry McCaffrey? Mr. Williams, you have yet to disclose the major conflicts of interest of Gen. McCaffery during your broadcast. It seems inconceivable someone, no matter how great a patriot, could be an objective military analysis when they had numerous political and financial stakes in the outcome of the war.

I doubt this comment will be published, but my constituents and I will keep doing our best to bring this issue to light until it is covered on the air.
Mr. Williams,
Stand up for yourself at the very least.
Salon: "The ongoing disgrace of NBC News and Brian Williams"
The New York Times's David Barstow focuses today on the numerous, undisclosed conflicts of interest of Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who continues to be featured frequently by NBC News as an objective analyst as he opines about war policies in which he has a substantial (and concealed) financial stake.
--
Poynter:"You are seriously harming your credibility by avoiding addressing this, and that of NBC News," writes one Daily Nightly visitor. Another says: "Your failure, last night, to even acknowledge the prominent NYT article about NBC's relationship with Barry McCaffrey was cowardly and calls your credibility into serious question."
--
Bercovici: NBC News should end its relationship with McCaffrey or face the loss of its credibility

Best,
www.leimertparkbeat.com
You cannot be serious!  You refused to print my comments on Monday's Daily Nightly blog because I quoted from the N. Y. Times's Nov. 30 article on Gen. Barry McCaffrey?  The Times has a Sunday circulation of more than 1.5 million.  One-and-a-half million people read the front page story about how McCaffrey used his role as an NBC News consultant to further his financial and business interests, and you're afraid that a few dozen people will learn about it on this blog?  You've got to be kidding me.  In the immortal words of Ralph Kramden: You're a riot, Alice.
Sure, it's easy to be interested in a scandal from long ago and far way, but NBC is covering your own scandal close to home.

It's very disappointing that NBC(GE) refuses to inform your viewers that Barry McCaffrey uses his appearances on NBC to further his financial interests. The New York Times story last week should be openly reported and addressed by NBC/GE.

We have a real problem when powerful news organizations distort news to help advance the interests of the group President Eisenhower dubbed "the military-industrial complex."

Or, if the NYT story is false, then McCaffrey should sue them for defamation. If he doesn't, it's clear the man has no integrity.
So - nothing on McCaffrey?
Brian - Four years??  It seems like only yesterday...

Congratulations - you are doing a really fine job.

Joan
When will you address McCaffrey on air?
Hi Anna
I saw the ad for the plates and laughed he's not even President yet. NO I only buy a celebrity plate with me and the kids on it. I had one made when they were young. We're the celebrities in this household. I guess it's a way for people to make money off the Election.  Who will have a plate next?
Jackie,
The measure of true bias is when you never have a kind word for one side and have nothing but for the other.
Surely every human being has some redeeming qualities....even Republicans.
Brian Williams has a cushy job, magnificent hair, wears expensive suits, and drives a Porsche. You rubes don't actually believe he's going to muck all of that up by reporting on McCaffrey's conflict of interest, do you?
