Another one of the great things during this Presidential transition process (at least during those cycles when it works the way it's supposed to) took place today, when Obama and McCain met earlier today. When you distill their positions looking for common ground, the two men agree on a surprising number of items, including matters like torture and the closing of Gitmo. Today's small talk was forced during the photo op (mostly about football) as it was, after all, their first face-to-face encounter since the "Bill Ayers" debate on Long Island late in the campaign. McCain and Obama are gentlemen, and they care about their country… and their country needs them both, right about now. Next we have to tackle Detroit.

GET WELLS

I've been in touch with Mrs. Reagan since her recent fall, and we continue to wish her a speedy and full recovery. And we should note the return to the Hill today of Senator Ted Kennedy, who was accompanied by his wife Vicky and his two beloved dogs. Senator Kennedy looked wonderful -- he was welcomed back to the Senate by a gathering of friends and staff -- and we wish him nothing but the best during his health struggle.

We hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast.

Brian -

Somehow the world seems a better place after November 4 - I think it's the fact that a family will be in the White House, and yes, even a puppy.

And the fact that Barack is the calmest man in the room doesn't hurt either. Is anyone surprised that he is reaching across the aisle?  They shouldn't be or perhaps they haven't read Doris Kearns Goodwins' book, "Team of Rivals".

Also thank you for reaching out and touching Mrs. Reagan and Ted Kennedy - they are treasures in their own way, too.

Methinks that some of the heads of Detroit and Wall Street were just a bit overpaid, weren't they?

Joan
There's a great feeling in this blog. McCain and Obama sitting together discussing things that America needs them to work on together. They both are very great men, and your right, we very much need them both right now.

I wish Mrs. Reagan a full and speedy recovery, and am very relieved to hear Senator Kennedy is looking wonderful and hope his health will only continue to improve.

See you in 28 minutes!

Hi Brian
I found out today a friend of my who's middle name is Douglas went to the same school I graduated from that being Brookdale College in Lincrof New Jersey. amile

Now to the news. Finally the reports show Hank Paulson has been giving the bailout money to friends and will leave 350 billion for Obama/Biden.  But as an audit will be done the Bush Administration has decided to give the total debt they've used since 2000 and so far it's over 4 Trillion dollars.  I notice how only the billions are mentioned in the news while the other spending went unmentioned or noticed for 8 years. I have to hand it to Bush/Cheney they knew who to pay off. Even Dan Rather now has proof the CBS Executives worked with the Republicans to cover up the truth about Bush skipping out of the Military illegally.

Bush wants a Square in Bagdad named after him, that wont happen. Obama might get a Square with his name after pulling out of Bagdad.

Katie Couric might be interested in the new book Sarah Palin is having someone write for her. Yes Katie now knows Sarah's not much at reading and her since of distance isn't good as she said she sees Russia from her window but I'm sure many Americans who followed Sarah will rush to buy the book with lots of pictures and coloring spaces.

Bill Clinton is said to being vetted by the Obama team. Now that's a twist as most in the Media questioned Hillary what would be Bill's role if she won. Yes Brother Bill just keeps coming back. Now I wonder if the meeting Obama had with Hillary inclued some questions for Bill. I love the way the reporters get faked out.

The G-20 Summit came and went without any ballons or progress. Bush did stick it to President Rudd. Yes President Rudd said China should be invited and that there should be a G-20 Summit as Bush wanted a G-8 Summit. Word got out and it made Bush emabarrassed yet again so he just ignored President Rudd. I know these World Leaders can't wait until the United States of American on Jan. 20th.  Then things can get down to business.

After watching 60 minutes with Mr. and Mrs. Obama I learned alot. He uses his smile as not to answer questions and just to flash it for kicks. He's down to earth and loves to walk. He's on to the tricks of the Bush Administration and is picking people who either got burnt or knows how they work.  The meeting with McCain was a smart move.  As Bill Clinton said keep you friends close and your enemies closer.  Now I'll sit back and watch what happens.

Bush will have to give a blanket pardon for people who served the 8 years of his Administration. There are just to many crimes done and so many people. Jack Abamoff is ready to spill his guts if he doesn't get a pardon.  Look what happen in Gov. Siegleman's case where not only the fixed Judge, Prosecutor but also the juriors were fixed. How many more cases were done like that in the pass 8 years?  Right now the Attorney General is just stalling until Jan. 20th.  I look forward to Valerie Plame's Civil Suit to reopen as the Judge in that case did a very poor job at covering up to get the White House staff off the hook. Even a first year law student knows that.

See you at 6:30 pm
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Good broadcast this evening. First of all I hope Mrs.Reagan continues to recover quickly from her fall recently. And it was great to see Senator Kennedy return to work having a huge banner and applause welcoming him back. All the best to him during this tough health struggle.
Now on to the brooadcast. The reports by Chris Jansing and Mr.Mullen concerning the California wildfires showed such devastation to so many homes and so quickly. The numbers given in the report of how many homes were lost and the wind gusts were staggering. The helicopters flying overhead dropping the flame retardant are being flown by some remarkable pilots. It looks so very dangerous coming so close to the heat of the flames not to mention other obstacles such as power lines. The report given by Mr.Mullen really gave a sense of just what the pilots are experiencing. God Bless all the brave and dedicated firefighters battling the fires. They are all doing an amazing job. I hope the winds calm down and they can get some relief. My heart goes out to all those people who have lost their homes. I hope they all can rebuild.
The "In Depth" report from New Hampshire about all the women Senators in the State Senate was great to learn. I think it is wonderful there are so many women holding those positions and they should be able to do a good job. The pictures hanging on the walls eventually will have portraits of the women who held office.
The segment called "Our Planet" with the report by Anne Thompson gives hope that our nation does have resources for cleaner energy alternatives, yet there has to be a way to get that kind of energy to big cities. There has to be a committment or it can't be accomplished in every city. We use so much energy for everything we do in life there has to be a more cost effective way to produce that power. Time will tell if all these major cities will commit to this idea.
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard! Look forward to your reports on Nightly News!
XOXO
While watching nightly news on KSDK ST.Louis with grandchildren 13,9,and 7 years old there were 3 ads for erectile dysfunction in the 30 minute time slot. I find this offensive and in poor taste. These ads are designed to tell a story and are shown in "childrens' t.v.times.
OK, so to state the obvious, it would seem to me that the answer to the economy lies in that last story. The coming "green energy" boom will be bigger than the tech boom ever was. But, like the transmission lines themselves, how do we get from here to there?

Gee it was good to see Sen Kennedy, thinner, but just as determined as ever.

I was sort of hoping to see my own Governor as SOS. There are rumors here in the state of an Ambassadorship instead. Sen. Clinton is more and more looking like a done deal. This could get interesting!

Best wishes for the week to the regulars, did anyone miss me? Jackie, I'm glad you're safe.
Lisa, it dawned on me one night that if Richard isn't reporting then things are quiet where he is.. probably a good thing.
Claudia welcome back I never forgot you girlfriend.

Now Brian the evening news was great. As for the Economy it seems the World is waiting for Jan. 20th.
I was surprised about Citi Banks large lay offs. Now to the bailout for the Auto Industry.  I agree with President Elect Obama it's must be saved for the sake of the US being the founder but also for those who work. Now I remember your report about the car from India and if we're not careful the Foreign car companies will take over.

I heard Gov. Arnie say he now believes in Global Warming after seeing fires all year in California. I guess he now understands how his work with Enron is still effecting us. We don't get any money from the Federal Govenment and it's hurting the need we have for everything.

We see so many poor countries with hungry children only to find out America has over 700,000 thousand kids that go hungry. I thought we're the riches country in the World but we can't feed our own children. What does that say about America.

I laughed at the reporter who said no names of Cabinet appointment would come out for a week. I remember Obama has been repeating that to everyone, I guess no one's listening.

Have a great evening all

Best to my friends Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anna and Matt
I have been fighting type 1 diabetes for nearly 26 years. Your story tonight is the first time I've cried not from frustration, but from hope...I fervently pray that a cure is possible, if not for me then for all the younger kids also living with this disease. It takes a toll I wish on no one. Thank you for such precise, careful reporting about type 1 diabetes and thank you for getting the story straight.
Brian--  Seems the economists are all trying to get us shopping again. Wasn't it our shopping and doing it beyond our means that got us into this mess in the first place? I don't think the American people can, or are even willing to, take on more debt at this time. Time for someone else around the world to start spending!

Claudia-- So good to have you back! Of course we missed you! Electrical transmission lines have been and are the problem. It's partly a NIMBY thing. (Not in my back yard) All people want to do is hit the switch and have the electrons right there, but how they get there they don't want to know, especially if it involves a transmission tower near them. We have the technology, we lack the will to build the lines. They are having to shut down wind mills in upper NY state at times because the transmission lines can't handle the load. It needs to be talked and written up. Broadcast too, Brian! Hope tonight was just a start.

Jackie-- so glad you are ok and not in jeopardy. May you stay that way!

Anna-- if the dollar keeps strengthening, you'll at least be able to afford your trip(s). My friend, the retired art teacher, did the Monet tour a few years ago. She loved it and what pictures!!! Look for London to get cheap after the first of the year.

Stephanie and Laurel-- Did either or both of you ever finish Richard's book?

Lisa-- your election isn't over yet! You get to vote again! It's the eternal election plus! They say we may not get the full Senate seated till after the inauguration.

Take care all--
I'm sure no one was surprised when Robert Bazell's story about a possible cure for type I diabetes made a point of spotlighting a Pfizer product.  One of the two drugs that may contribute to this cure is Pfizer's Sutent.  At one point during the story, a bottle of Sutent was pictured on the left side of the screen, and in the center was a huge blow-up of a Sutent capsule with the word "PFIZER" emblazoned across the top.  The capsule was as big as the bottle next to it.  Leave it to Nightly News to make sure they give Pfizer plenty of free publicity whenever they can.  It's the least NBC can do to repay their pals in the pharmaceutical industry (like Pfizer and Glaxo) for the hundreds of millions of dollars in ad and sponsorship money they have paid to NBC over the years.  Would Nightly News have run this story if a Pfizer product hadn't been involved?  No one can say for sure.  But I don't see how we can be expected to trust Nightly News's coverage of the pharmaceutical industry when they are taking so much money from the major players in that industry.  Congresspersons and senators are bound by strict laws governing their relationships with lobbyists.  These lawmakers are (in theory) expected to pass laws fairly, free of any influence from lobbyists' checkbooks.  So why aren't there laws governing news organizations that accept billions of dollars in ad money from the same industries they regularly cover?  Prior to airing any news story that features a product that pays ad money to NBC, Brian Williams should be required to offer a disclosure statement that explicitly states that the product in question is (or was) a Nightly News advertiser.
Congratulations, Nightly News!  It seems you finally figured out the difference between "Colombia" and "Columbia".  In your 11/9 story about statins, you spelled the country of Colombia as "Columbia".  But a week later, when you showed a clip from the new James Bond movie, your on-screen attribution graphic read "MGM-Columbia Pictures".  You finally got it right!  Keep up the good work.
As a former member of the UMWA and USWA, I no there was a need for unions in our history, but for the sake of our country's economy, even the Unions must admit this gluttony must stop. And American cars are every bit as good as foriegn cars. It seems to be the "in" thing to bash the American car.Rescue the industry, but only if wage concessions are made, similar to the foriegn competion.
Brian
Hope you told Mrs. Reagan that you realize it was Hillary Clinton who was involved in seances, not her. Haven't yet heard you report that Barack Obama made a mistake on that.

When you report something as a fact, shouldn't you report when you find out it isn't? Isn't journalism all about truth?
Chicago is known for six things: Michael Jordan, Oprah
Winfrey, Jerry Springer, Al Capone, Second City Comedy
and crooked politics, and not necessarily in that order.
You're Hillary Clinton, do you give up your nice, cosy
NY senate seat for a position that serves at the
discretion of two backstabbing, crooked Chicago politicians?
Personally, I don't walk into Rahm Emmanuel's and Barack
Obama's snake pit without a flame thrower.
To Brian and NBC:

I once viewed your network as a wonderous place to learn from and to receive "the news".  Now I can see you are nothing more than propagandists for the corrupt DC culture that has reached it's high water mark.  You are now totally distrusted for your purposeful lies and deceptions wildly over-evident throughout your fake "news" coverage.  You have lost all your credibility, never to be regained! Our household will never watch/believe you again.  As a one-time very liberal person, I'm deeply ashamed of your complete partisan blindness and my unfounded former belief in your veracity.  NEVER AGAIN!
Anne Thompson's report on attempts to clean the burning of coal was a visual work of art, as well as informative.  Thank you.

I also appreciate the mention of confirmation of the physical reality of Gulf War illness.  I would like to see follow-up reporting on this important issue.  Avoidance of future chemical exposures -- including household cleaning products and fragranced laundry and personal care products -- might be the clue to improvement of our chemically injured veterans.
