The Purell presidency

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

I was reminded by reading Bill Sammon's piece last night (and several since, all calling attention to Obama's own account of his first meeting with President Bush) that there is another first about this Presidential transition: Bush and Obama are two men of the hand sanitizer generation. Both have become dependent upon, if not addicted to, the vaguely slippery, slightly gelatinous liquid which has become the staple liquid...the nectar of life...for those who shake hands for a living and wish to avoid germs...and thus its become the coin of the realm in modern politics. When I covered President Clinton, hand sanitizers had yet to be perfected -- but because his Agents and Physician were horrified to occasionally see the President eating, with his hands, after shaking hundreds of hands, they invented a pre-moistened foam cylinder that they kept in the limousine. The size of a track and field baton, he would use it in lieu of washing his hands in a sink -- the same theory behind Purell and other later, more portable products. While the President has ushers and valets who are always nearby with hand sanitizer, Obama aide Reggie Love is informally known as the "keeper of the Purell" in the traveling germfest that has been the Obama campaign. Kudos to Bill Sammon for reminding us not only of the first time these two men met...but also the role hand sanitizer played!

Today marked Obama's first visit to the Oval Office, and his first ride in one of the Washington-based fleet of Presidential limousines. Because of the urgency of this transition period (owing to the economic crisis) he is getting a view of the trappings -- and a clear-eyed view of the challenges of office -- earlier than most.

Our coverage of the transition continues tonight -- we have a great broadcast that includes a never-before-seen glimpse of World War II combat footage. We hope you can join us as we start off a new week.

Since President-elect Obama is so good at maintaining an exercise routine, I'm wondering if you found out if he got a tour of the White House Gym and are there plans to update it with a new basketball court?
What a picture of a current President who brought down the US to it's lowest in history, to a incoming President who has to fix it. Americans don't seem to have a problem with Bush destorying our country but demand that Obama fix it now. We hear TV host use the F word their so up set about Obama/Biden winning. Even as this day show Bush/Obmam, Bernanke/Paulson are still illegally giving away the bailout money with no reporting. Yes AIG is laughing at how they made fools of the taxpayers while collecting 162 Billion dollars and partying with it and even giving out big bonuses as they say GREED IS GOOD. By the time Obama takes office the Bush Administration will make sure every dime of the bailout money is wasted and gone. That's no accountablity for the White House's actions but everyone is demanding Obama do something NOW.

If only Bill HR 6094 had passed as it was to pardon the entire White House and Departments that illegally kidnapped, tortured, raped and killed innocent men/woman/children since 2001. Now Bush will have to ask Obama for a pardon for the War Crimes he committed. Bush will pardon all of this appointees and staff from the criminal actions due in 8 years.  Good News is the United Nations will hold the Bush Administration reponsible for War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity. Even Daddy Bush can't get his son out of that charge. I did notice how all the Republicans and their supporters are asking for forgiveness and while reporting that Obama will fail even before he gets started. I sometimes think reporters never listen to Obama's speeches as he laid out his plan, all that's being reported is what will Obama/Biden do and of cause Rahm Emanuel has many shacking in their boots. I did want to point out that all the talk about how Obama and the Clinton's didn't get along was a smoke screen to the public. Obama failed at getting elected to the House so he called Hillary and Bill Clinton to help him run for the Senate. I knew that yet the Media either didn't know or didn't wont to report that information. That oversight has been cleared up as we see how many people from the Clinton Administration are involved in the Obama Administration.  While the Republicans were busy trying to pull anotheer Bush/Cheney election, the Democrats were working on repairing the US Economy/Foreign image/Military. I told you when this started Good always wins in the end over Evil.

Everyday that goes by more Americans are losing their homes, jobs and life savings while the White House just keeps stealing money.  No one is watching the bailout money and no one's reporting the crimes that continue to go on with this Administration.

See you at 6:30 pm
Dear Brian,

I just sent my first care package to Viper Company this afternoon.  It seemed particularly appropriate, what with the Veterans' Day holiday coming up tomorrow.  Many thanks to Nightly News and Today for including a mailing address and "wish list" on their websites.

On a negative note, I guess I will have to give myself an insulin injection before I watch your package on the Obama family tonight, and I'm not even diabetic.  Sometimes, I can't tell if I'm watching the news or Access Hollywood.  If then-Senator Obama regretted allowing his family to be interviewed by Maria Menounos, and if the press is supposed to keep a respectful distance from the President's children - as they did for Chelsea Clinton and, to a lesser degree, the Bush twins - then why are we discussing how one daughter would like to redecorate her bedroom, what breed of puppy they might adopt, and whether they will go to public or private school?  Furthermore, why are we discussing what fashions Michelle Obama is wearing, and when and where she and her husband go on a "date"?  I don't mean to be rude, but I really don't care.  For one thing, it's none of my business, and for another, that's not why I voted for Senator Obama.  I would prefer that the focus be on the issues of the day.  Let's squash the human interest angle, okay?

Lots of love to the usual suspects:  Lisa, Jackie, Stephanie, Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.  XOXO

An early THANK YOU to all our veterans - both those currently serving, and those who have served.  I am indebted to you.
Dear Mr. Williams:

I usually watch your news in the evening hours but was shocked tonite when you gave out publically the codes names of our future President Obama's family.  What were you thinking???? Doesn't a President have enough security issues as it is?  Please don't put him or his family in jeopardy by broadcasting security information. There are too many wackos out there.  Thank you.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another excellent broadcast this evening. First of all the report by Savannah Guthrie concerning the Transition of Power with President-Elect Barack Obama and Michelle Obama meeting for the first time with President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush was most nice to see. It was good this was done earlier than usual because of the state of issues with the economic crisis and two wars being fought. Things need to progress quickly, but smoothly and it appears it is going in that direction.
It was wonderful that First Lady Laura Bush showed the future First Lady Michelle Obama the residence upstairs and the children's rooms. I'm sure everyone will be excited to move into the new residence.
The report by Rehema Ellis on "Women and Money" was most important for any mother and daughter to see. The mom featured in the piece is doing a very good thing teaching her daughter how to save money and handle finances and especially at her daughter's young age. All women should have an understanding of how to properly handle their money and if they need advice seek some financial help. It is vitally important for all women. This young daughter is learning to earn money from babysitting and this will help her to save her money and spend it wisely.
The canisters containing footage of World War II found by the grandchildren of the Grandfather who filmed the scenes was most interesting. He served his country with honor and bravery that seeing this footage of planes, targets being shot, people of the region and faces of the brave soldiers is truly remarkable to see. Being the film is black and white with no sound makes it even more interesting. Truly remarkable.
The piece by Mr.Tibbles from Canada called "Highway of Hereos" was so moving and heartwarming. Seeing the huge amounts of people lining the highway waving Canadian Flags and saluting the fallen soldiers simply bring tears. I wholeheartedly agree with the mother of the fallen soldier there cannot be enough words or film to express ones thanks to all those people and what it must mean to her. God Bless All the Brave Soldiers serving our country. A BIG THANK YOU to ALL THE VETERANS! We honor and salute each of you!
WE REMEMBER AND HONOR ALL OF YOU THIS VETEARN'S DAY!
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra Safe and Well Richard! See You Soon on Nightly News!
XOXO
I can't believe you announced on national television the code names to be used for the president elect and his family. Why do you think code names are used?? This is really appalling that you would risk their safety in that manner.
Jackie, wow, Bush on trial.  Something tells me that is not going to happen and for the stake of our country I hope it doesn't.

Just like the chatter about something happening to Obama.  He is an insult to my American dream of independence and prosperity but I sure don't want anything to happen to him.

As far as the AIG bailout it was $150 B.   Just for the record.  I don't want anyone to think that extra $12 B just flowed into space travel and executive bonuses.

Laurel, as far as I am concerned I just want Michelle to look like a first lady and not in clothes 2 sizes too small for her.  Tight is not pretty.

As far as the dog and the children and their home life I hope they don't publish all of their comings and goings.  Let's face it anyone that thinks the children will be in public school are fooling themselves.

Cheers to our veterans!  I just came tonight from the annual VFW dinner my family and I go to each year with my neighbors.  It has become a tradition.   Everyone is very aged, very sweet and very happy singing patriotic songs.   We thank all the veterans for their love and sacrifices.   Tommorrow is parade day in my town so I will be taking the morning off to enjoy the Veteran's Day parade.

Bests to All!

P.S. Here's a link to the Obama Adminstration jobs if anyone is interested.

Brian I think we're in for a big surprise with the new Administration. With cooperation from all over the World Obama/Biden will do good.
Now it's interesting that Laura would tell Mrs. Obama how to raise kids in the White House since Jenna/Barbara were 20 years old when their Father became President. Michelle should be asking Mrs. Carter who raised Amy at 9 years old and Hillary who raised Chelsea at 12 years old in the White House.

AIG got 150 billion and has been spending the money on trips for staff and bonuses. Alot of companies are pulling out of AIG. Looks like AIG is in the Bush Club and Circuit City is not.

Obama wonts Bush to push for help to the American people before Jan. 20th as President Bush needs a pardon from the new President. Let's see if Obama caves in and gives Bush that pardon. Now if Ford had let Nixon pay for the crimes he committed we wouldn't see the problems we see today. Once a President knows he can commit crimes and the next President will pardon him it will happen again. At lease the American people will see how little Bush thinks and helps in our hour of need, I don't think he will do anything.

Have a great evening all
Brian,

I am hoping you can spend a moment in a Daily Nightly post about the correspondents on the campaign trail.

After 20+ months are Lee and Kelly going to get some R&R or do they keep after it in this transition period?

Thanks.
May I ask a very shallow question?  Maria Menounous was wearing a stunning short coat (olive green) when she walked through the woods in a Making a Difference segment on Sunday's Nightly News with Lester Holtz.  May I ask you, Maria, where you bought that coat because I would LOVE to buy a similar one?
