If it's Thursday... must be Sarasota

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

We arrived in Sarasota at 3am -- I flopped down in my hotel room and awoke this morning to the most stunning sight outside my window: water, and palm trees and sun. There was no time to do anything more than note it, as we were up and out this morning to catch up with the Obama campaign at an outdoor rally. Right now I'm in a cinder-block office, looking out the window at the aforementioned sun and palm trees, while on MSNBC I'm watching John McCain at a rally in Ohio, where it’s so cold I can see his breath. How these candidates avoid being sick constantly is beyond me. I can tell you that the Obama campaign has a maniacal germ-avoidance program, in the form of ubiquitous bottles of hand sanitizer. Candidates for President, and the aides and Secret Service Agents who surround them, touch a lot of hands each day...and they cannot take any chances. Neither McCain nor Obama can afford to go down now. Five days until the finish line. We'll see you from Florida tonight, where it is absolutely beautiful.

Enjoy as much of Sarasota as you can.  As a Sarasota native who now lives in colder weather I miss it.  One other note, a few months ago you had to extend the closing sequence for Nightly News (I enjoyed hearing more of John Williams' NN Score).  Perhaps after the election you would all consider once a week putting together a photo/video montage to go along with the NN Theme.  It would be nice to include other areas of the U.S. even if you aren't reporting from there.
I do feel a little ignored.  Oklahoma with only 7 votes apparently doesn't rate a visit from the candidates.  Obviously, everyone expects it to go Republican.  I do hope the Democrats win in Oklahoma and show the pollsters that they cannot write off a state.
As I watch the Nightly News interview, as usual I am focused on Mr. Obama's attire, and wonder who provides his wardrobe and at what cost? Thanks
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Glad you made it to Sarasota, Florida okay. I'm so sorry you can'y enjoy the scenery, but it sounds just beautiful there. With all the palm trees, water and sunshine. I must say here in Phoenix it has been great weather all week. Nice to know you have good weather too. First of all the report by Mr.Costello concerning the cutbacks of many major companies was certainly staggering high numbers with losses of jobs and sales declining. Many people are not spending money on large items and trying to save to just pay bills. It is a very tough economy right now and it will most likely continue for a while. I really do hope things turn for the better soon for everyone.
On another note I viewed some of the interview you had with Senator Obama and it was most interesting to see. The job of President is so much tougher this time with so many huge issues of serious importance that whoever gets elected will face a very tough time. I wish the person the BEST!
The report by Mr.Potter concerning the schools in Florida having major cutbacks was disturbing and the students suffer the most. Sharing instruments during the music class being one and living in the shelters is something that needs to be addressed and fixed because one feels badly for the students. I hope things improves and hopefully it will soon.
I can understand the use of the hand sanitizer being heavily used on the campaign trail by the candidates with all the hands they have to shake. It is a grueling time for each candidate. No chances can be taken so close to the election.
Thank you for the reports this evening. See you in New York tomorrow. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Hope to see you on Nightly News soon!
XOXO
Shame on you Brian Williams...your 3 to 5 minute interview with Obama tonight was followed by a 1 minute report on McCain introducing Joe the Plummer. Balanced reporting I think not.
Great to see you in Sarasota! Come back and visit soon!

PS, if you thought it was odd to see bleachers empty- people weren't supposed to sit there! They were told to stand down in the front. Sarasota came out in full support for Obama and some people were even turned away.
Florida people quit crying that they have no band instruments.  In my day we as parents paid for them.  Indiana parents must pay for bookd, Florida parents get them free  Forida kids can get free breakfast and free lunch for those that need it. Too many have cell phones and cigarettes in their hands to bother to see their children are taken care of.
Are you napping on the plane yet!  Your a good writer, i think so. Still trying to figue out how to approach my days.  It's a little scarry; good things are scarry to me?  Its hard to manage things that are so scarce....bet Florida was pretty.
bye, Brian, tesa

Are you kidding me? The amount of praise and coverage you gave to Barrack Obama compared with the miniscule coverage another reporter gave to the McCain campaign is laughable! You are completely in the Obama camp, and it is quite obvious when I listen to your questions, praise and coverage of his campaign. Fair and balanced? What a joke!
When you refer to Washington, which one?  D.C or the state?

There is a difference!!

Thank you, Ben
Based on what I heard this evening, I would say you and NBC NEWS do not deserve to continue reporting the news.  When you first became journalists you swore to uphold the duty for FAIRLY reporting UNBAISE journalism.  I heard Brian Williams reporting this evening on OBAMA in glowing terms after which he turns the floor over to another field reporter from MCCAINs CAMP for a FEW words of nothing whatsoever in the positive. Fair journalism???? [and this is by no means the first time I have noticed your FAIR journalism tactics]  It is my perception that you are TELLING me who I should vote for instead of reporting fairly for both candidates.  If I am mistaken, then please let me know and I truly apologize.  If not, I suggest you reread your oath of fair journalism.   I have not even decided who I will be voting for as yet, but I DO KNOW I WILL NO LONGER BE TURNING IN TO BRIAN WILLIAMS or the NBC Nightly News.  10/30/08
The report on McCain, Obama, and the environment was interesting but a bit short on specifics. Anne notes that McCain would spend 2 billion on "clean coal" (which at least for the near-term remains a pie-in-the-sky technology from a commercial perspective, given the logistics and ongoing expense). But no mention of how much tax money would be funneled into a major expansion of nuclear capacity/the transport and centralized processing of waste. Or whether/how McCain will focus on maximizing efficiency, reducing the amount of new supply needed. And how about their stance on fossil carbon cap & trade, rather than relying solely on an energy market that continues to favor oil and coal?
Brian
CHARACTER is how one acts when nobody is looking.

The bias we see on screen from NBC makes it easy for us to visualize just what happens when no viewers are looking...

and sadly, the caliber of character in the media is abysmal. We can just imagine all of you high fiving one another when Democrats are ahead in the polls and eagerly strategizing with one another as to how to cast Republicans in a negative light as you provide Obama a halo.

Journalists like to say that they're objective. How long has it been since you've taken an objective look at what's going on at your own network?
Regarding the report from scientific reporter and sometimes film critic Robert Baziel (sp) ... it was a fantastic report.  I cannot say that I understood it all, not because of bad reporting (on the contrary), but rather it may just be the juxtoposition of the magic of movies colliding with the magic of science.  Thanks for the great report, and hope that your scientific reporting department keeps up such interesting reports.  It keeps us viewers on our own toes (is that painful?)!
First of all, hello from Elmira, NY! I understand you know all about our area having lived here yourself. I am a faithful NBC News watcher but I feel the need to share a concern that I have had since the last election. PLEASE do not reveal any state's poll results too early. I think that when this was done in the past, it gave a lot of people the excuse not to vote. They were probably thinking, "Why should I vote? So and so is clearly in the lead in my state." With several states so close in their polls as of now, I do not think that any results should be revealed until the polling places have closed in that state. I think to do otherwise is to jeopardize the fairness of this election. In this way, everyone will feel as though their vote does count. Thanks for listening.
Great job Brian...your reporting is super cool, just like Obama...both of you are cool, composed, and report "just the facts"  :-)
Hi Brian,

I sooo envy you your visit, albeit a brief one, to sunny Sarasota!  I am glad that the hand sanitizer is abundant because I often wonder about all that anonymous hand-shaking.  I guess I watch too much of the TV program "24" to rest easy about the presidential candidates's safety in crowds.

Regarding your interview with Senator Obama... I was struck by the contrast between this one and the conversations I have seen showing Senator McCain with anybody.  It seems that Senator Obama is always able to lay out his thoughts, plans and opinions in an orderly fashion that is supported by fact on ANY topic presented by the interviewer.  Senator McCain, on the other hand, always seems defensive and unable (or unwilling) to articulate his own plans or thoughts...  unless he is talking negatively about Senator Obama.  It makes me wonder if Senator McCain ever looks at his interviews and attempts to better himself in that area, since that is all many of us have to truly measure him by...  Apparently not.

Anyway...  Having voted on Sept 23, I am beyond ready for this thing to be over!  I will not be able to breathe freely until after Nov 4.

Take care of yourself!  I'm going to need your calming influence on Tuesday night.
I enjoy your news casting, and I think it’s awesome! Almost every night I watch NBC Nightly News, and almost every morning I watch the Today Show. I was at Ed Smith Stadium last night, and watched you do your nightly news cast. I thank you for letting me get a picture with you, and for you signing a piece of paper that said early voting on it. You’re an awesome anchor man. Thank you Mr. Brian Williams and will continue to watch Nightly News every night.
                       From,
                       Eric               10/31/08
To those criticizing the length of Brian's indepth Obama interview, you have short memories.  It was only about a week ago Brian did a two night interview with McCain-Palin.  First night's interview was 12 minutes; second night was 7 minutes; don't think Obama received equal time those nights!  Your attacks on Brian's objectivity is unwarranted and not supported by the facts.  He deserves your apologies.
Your network Nbc and Abc and a few others are a joke with the campaign I will no longer listen to any of your stations (ever),I know where your favoritism is, and thats ok, HOWEVER, I, LIKE MANY OTHER AMERICANS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHERE OBAMA WAS BORN AND IF HE IS A CITZEN OF THE USA.WE Will need to see prove of his birth certificate. Will someone take the initiate at your network to let us know that information, or are you still going to hide behind the curtain, everything is a secret about Obama. Why is that? We Americans have a right to Know.I guess I will change my vote for McCain, he is much more qualyified to handle the ecomony and Our Country. AMERICA wake up before its to late.Oh, by the way I am now listening to FOX news and they are great.
Thank you Brian Williams!
Your one-on-one with President-elect (almost) Barack Obama was fantastic!  Your support of our party this election season has been magnificent!!!  Keep up the good work and rest assured that your efforts helped tremendously in electing a true Democrat as President.  Thank you for your courage to take a stand and pick a side!!!!!!
Brian: Helpful criticism...When you deliver the news from the anchor position you're spot on...No one is better. When you are interviewing a subject chair to chair, your eyes wander the room or you look at the floor...Katie and Charlie look at their subject when they are interviewing in person...You look uncharacteristically unsettled...Can you think about LOOKING at the person you're talking to...I think you would be more effective...Tim in Sarasota
Why does NBC portray Sarah Palin as an idiot?  Why is the public not informed of the responsibility she has in Alaska as Commander in Chief of the 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard and is routinely briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security and counter terrorism?  She has a higher classified security rating than either candidate of the Democrat Party.  Is it you purpose to throw this election?
