Ted's big house

The verdict came swiftly, unexpectedly like an ice shelf cracking in the remote Arctic Circle.  The jury foreman's voice: "guilty" came crashing down on Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, 7 times for 7 counts.  The longest-serving Republican Senator has been unanimously convicted in his 6-week federal corruption trial. Stevens now found guilty of lying about $250,000 of gifts and renovations on his Alaska home that he was required to report on Senate financial disclosure forms from 2000-2006.

The conviction appears to put Stevens 40-year Senate tenure in grave jeopardy in next week's election. Motions for sentencing will be heard on February 25th.  It all started with a little rustic cabin in the Alaska woods where Stevens said he liked to chop wood and think. But in the new millennium, the cabin was transformed into a handsome ski lodge with wrap around decks, extra bedrooms, Jacuzzi, snow-melt system, steel stairs, and garage. It was the home many Americans dream for where the Stevens could accommodate family and friends in style. Sadly, the end of the road for Stevens could be 'the Big House.' He is facing a maximum of 35 years in prison though whether he is sentenced to jail time remains to be seen.

Upon hearing the conviction, Stevens seemed grim but passive. One of his attorneys put her hand on his shoulder. When he stood to leave, Stevens flipped his hearing-assist headset across the defense table as if he was thinking 'enough of this.' Stevens and his attorneys threaded a media gauntlet outside the courthouse as they climbed into a white van without commenting.

Stevens at age 84 is an Alaska icon, but his conviction in the twilight of his career will likely cast a shadow over his legacy in the land of the midnight sun. The defense had argued that the Stevens paid every bill they got, and had done nothing wrong. The prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Stevens 'knowingly and willfully' accepted free gifts and remodeling work that he concealed from the Senate on disclosure forms. The trial had more twists than a wine opener corkscrew, but no doubt left a bitter taste for Stevens, and it's hard to cheer an 84-year-old powerful man's fall from grace.

Ted oh my! Sarah just tossed Ted under the bus even knowing he helped her with her career. Talk about friendship. I guess Ted knows Sarah is all about Sarah. Good news is Ted is still a member of Excellence in Public Service Inc. which both Sarah and Ted are members. Sarah will not remove him from the membership. Who knows the way the Alaska Govenment is run Sarah might select conviced felon Ted to the McCain/Palin Cabinet after she pardon's his crimes. Looks like things might be looking up for Ney, Gonzales, Abramoff, DeLay, Cunningham, Foley and others who are looking for employment. At lease reporters know these guys.  GREED IS GOOD AND CRIME PAYS IF YOUR A REPUBLICAN CHOSEN FRIEND.
Good thing for NBC and the other networks that the Stevens verdict came in today. You can now ride this horse up to the election with nary a word yet about Tom Mahoney and his double SEX-apade in Florida. Way to be objective. No wonder NBC Universal has to make $500 million worth of cuts. Couldn't happen to a better group!!!!!!!! I guess I should not complain. If I did not have MSM news at 6:30, I would not have anything to poke fun at in the evening.
Mahoney (Democrat) paid the mistresses with funds that were not his own. WHEN are we going to hear this story reported?
Many Republicans are rightly upset with Ted's conviction as he is a Senior Senator with 40 years of service. But many Law Makers from both Party will follow him soon. Yes Mahoney had a mistress but does that reach a charge for jail?  Look there's also Dollar Bill Jefferson and his frezzer of money that hasn't been dealt with yet. Many Republicans felt Scooter Libby should have been able to do what he wanted without being charged. This is how Republcans felt when after Nixon became President his VP was indicted for fraud and had to resign ( Spiro Agnew). Next Nixon has to resign because he helped commit a crime and was about to be impeached. Yes I didn't forget Bill Clinton was going to be impeached for having an affair with a younger woman. As the World laughed Bill continued to do his job as President. As we see today the French President married his mistress who is well liked by many and loved by the people of France. Funny how Americans pick personal affairs as a major crime of a Law Maker but fraud, stealing taxpayers money, illegally invading countries, lying to the United Nations and so much more is really not important to Americans and when done by Republicans just build a bridge and get over it. As Secretary of State Connie Rice say recently the United States is doing find and we have no Economic problems. That's what we should all believe and chicken little the sky is falling.
Ted made his bed and he will lie in it.  Corruption truly is bipartisan.  Unfortunately for Ted, he is not a Democrat running for President - then this would have been swept under the rug and we would most likely have heard very little about it.
I am writing this to condone what Ted Stevens has done. But just a small note of defense. Like Governor Ryan of Illinois, doing their day to day business it was so common over many years to have patronage, gifts, etc.

In recent times it has become illegal to knowingly accept or do any of the above. I think between Stevens and Gov. Ryan they, in their own minds, thought it was still okay.

Now they are known as convicted felons doing what had become natural to them over the years. How sad!
