By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

Today I want to devote my post to a video circulating on the web -- don't stop me if you've seen this, but I want to hear what you think about it as a barometer of where we are as a society, and an indicator of the stakes going into this exciting election 8 days from now. It's powerful. Is it all true? Are the facts all correct? I'd like to hear from you -- what do you think? Take a look, let it sink in. And don't forget to join us tonight!

Probably true.  I thought CB Radio was a great communicator.  I am 82 years old and am not going to worry about all this.

Condi Rice last week at a women's conference with Maria Shriver said the greatest threat to our national security was the education of our children and citizens.

Based on this video I could not agree more!

Thanks for sharing the video and parents please, please take an active role in your children's/grandchildren's education!

Bests to all!
I have a question for you Brian! Why was all those information created? I have the answer for you! The people around the planet mistrusted the media or simply called "information givers" and they had a sense of urgency to be correctly informed, so they created the internet, news blogs (just like you did, with inventing the "Daily Nightly" for promotional purposes) or other forms of information givers. Another reason was, that because the population of the planet rose to 6.5 billion or 7 billion in 4 years, there was a feeling amongst people of being lonely, so they created social-networking sites like "Facebook", "MySpace" or other SNS. Another reason was that because of the acceleration of the human species, people thought living in fast forward as Kenny Chesney would call it. So they had a sense of connectivity in them and they invented the cell phone, iPod, the Blackberry or the PDA. (sorry for the promotional references, wasn't planned although) Also the rise of Far Eastern nations is a surprise at all. There is an evolution in superpowers. There were the Egyptian, Greek, Romans, French, Britons, Americans. But the evolution doesn't end with the United States, it will be continued with the Chinese, Indians and Africans. Western nations comforted themselves in their inventions and never expected the surge of other hemispheres and nations in political organizations like the NATO, United Nations or local organizations like the ASEAN, NAFTA, EU, or OAS.

But lets get back to the elections. It will be unbearable for a President to live in fear of being assassinated. During the course of the presidential campaign Barack Obama had 3 unfoiled assassination attempts. The security detail for a President will be pretty expansive if he lives in the fear of being of executed by assassination.

It will be pretty exciting who will be the next President in 1 week and 1 day. So please NBC, be at least the last week non-partisan. That would be a huge honor for all of mankind.
Fascinating video.  I remember learning about the Industrial Revolution in school.  One hundred years from now, students will study the Information Revolution and those kids will be bewildered about what life must have been like before that.
With all the information available via so many sources how can so many people get so much so wrong so often all at the same time?
I don't know if I believe everything that is stated as fact in the video...that is one of the problems, with so much information out there, how can you trust the source?

True or not, our kids don't need a BETTER education, they need a DIFFERENT KIND of education. Start teaching them how to THINK. Is there a way to teach abstract reasoning? Our schools were created to help us survive in an industrial society but we are now a technology society, our schools need to keep up. Have you ever read a book called "The Third Wave"?

I haven't stopped to verify all the facts in this video, but it's consistent with Thomas Friedman's "The World is Flat".

The bottom line is that life is coming at us faster and faster.  Americans place little value on STEM disciplines and parents would rather turn on the TV or video game to entertain their kids than encourage them to spend that time reading.

We HAVE to get back on track, and it starts with education.  Parents have to do their part, even if they don't feel they can keep up with the subject matter.  Businesses need to get involved with failing school districts and demand the change we need to create the employees we need today and tomorrow.

This is going to be a team effort.  We can no longer teach kids to the test, teach them WHAT to think, instead we have to get back to teaching them HOW to think.  We need courses on logic, creative thinking, problem solving, critical thinking skills and yes, even financial literacy (would have gone a long way in preventing the current foreclosure crisis).
That was alot of info for me to consume in such a short amount of time, and it was flashing so fast I had to watch it twice to grasp it all & now I have a headache and I have to go and lay down. "it is funny though that with all the information we have available to us we seem to be learning less. For example look at the condition of our economy and our world affairs.
Powerful indeed.  What struck me was that as I first began watching, I felt this sense of dread.  But the more information I saw, the more excited I was by the sheer opportunity of it all.

And I believe we are ready as a nation to seize it.
Very interesting! I wonder what the world will be like only 10 years from now...
Wow, that is amazing.  I often say how humans have made more technical advancements within the last 50 years, than the entire history of our species.
I'm also one of those people who met someone online and ended up marrying him (happily married!). I don't live in front of my computer, but I have lots of online friends.  The ability to connect with people is incredible.

I do wonder what it'll mean when computers are able to out-compute the humans who created them.  That's almost seems scary.  I have visions of HAL.   ;-)
This video really makes you think about alot of things including the influence that China and India will have in the world in the near future. With these two countries holding about 1/3 of the worlds population and their economies continuing to grow, the next president will have take into account the the growing influence they have in the world. I believe the US will still be a leading force in the world in the future, but especially with the explosive growth in these countries we have to increasingly be aware of the influence and power they will hold
Brian my friend your a little late but you are correct. As the World has moved on with education and developing in over all tech. I got a view of how far behind we are from a friend of my daughter's who lives in Korea. As for Americans we've been to releaxed for so many years and children aren't encouraged to dream. Funny how the report of JFK and his dream of a man on the moon was just that. My grandmother watched with us the first man landing on the moon and thought it was fake. We are so busy becoming terrorist aggressers like with Syria, Iraq and other countries we have fell far behind growth. It is interesting how Americans hold on to the pass leadership as the World has moved on and now surprassed us. India is a poor country but learned from the US that education was their answer out and they learned it from the United States. Remember the young man living in a shack overseas who brought down the US Govenment computer system. I guess I now really appreciate the old days and what I was taught that education comes first and then play.

Ted Stevens needs that Bush magic wand like Libby got. Sarah is positioning herself for President but bad timing. She could have used that famous executive privlege card to like Stevens walk. One news station reported that Stevens could stay a Senator even being a convicted criminal. Let's just open the Govenment up to the convicts as we have done for Beauty Contestants with no knowledge of the job.

I hate to say I told you so but I did. Mr. Lewis saw what I saw as a teenager, how allowing hate to enter in rallies opens up wider and look what we see today. A young woman lying about an attack using Obama and now the skinheads planning to kill blacks and then Obama. I remember many innocent black people killed because of Dr. King and even Kennedy's decisions for equal rights. McCain knows better then I do how these things start but he's only looking for his own greed of the Oval Office and not what's best for the American people.  Looks like Alaska and Arizona wont be supporting the GOP this election year.

We attacked Syria in hopes they will attack us. Yes this is the GOP plan to help McCain get votes at the cost of how many innocent Americans lives. We killed a Father and his sons and a husband/wife working their fields on their land. 5 innocent people killed by the US to push the Syria Govenment into pushing back so an election can be stolen again. This is how low in morals our Govenment Leaders have gone. If on election day voters feel this direction that McCain is taking us then he will be the next President. Only one problem with that choice. World Leaders will not join the US and those that we show terrorist aggression to will attack us or the United Nations will treat us as a terrorist country.

Brian I felt bad for the Media who reported the lie about the attack on the young lady. But at lease you know what's ahead from the McCain/Palin ticket. More lies and fake stories plus getting more people to plot against Obama/Biden.  I remember when a soldier coming home from Vietnam as he lived in the South. Proud he served our country and wearing his uniform with the metals earned he was killed for no reason but the President was going to sign the Civil Rights Bill. What a way to honor a true American hero who put his life on the line for all Americans.

See you at 6:30
Wow, really interesting. Lots of information can also means lots of misinformation. The statistic about honor students in India is very sobering, which is why we cannot have anti-intellectuals and anti-science extremists anywhere near our government. The U.S. has GOT to be progressive and reject those who would take us backward by mocking science and 'intellectuals.'  I'm lookin' at a certain VP candidate here...  I've got nothing against Joe Six-Pack, but he's not going to keep us competitive so that ultimately people's lives will be better.
When I first saw the video I couldn't help but see that Moore's Law and Metalfe's Law have been choreographed in a way to explain their theories to the You Tube age.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_Law
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metcalfe%27s_law

The knowledge that the video enlightens us to has been around for over decades. What we as a country and a global community can do to prepare for an age when man may no longer be to smartest animal on the planet deserves some consideration now before it becomes too late.

It's doubtful we can give a machine or an algorithm a soul, ethics or a conscience when we can't even get our political leaders to adopt them.

Best,
This is the reason it's possible to research timely topics and know who in the media is telling the whole truth, who's embellishing it and who is telling half of it. Technology has made it easy to detect biased reporting.
Well, for several years I've been trying to figure out how to platinumize my several old telephone modems and use them for doorstops.  My question is just what is done with all the outdated hardware these countries must possess?  I mean, is it like old clothes and "hand-me-downs," or what?  In one movie taking place in India, a little girl was given a graduate GMAT book as the only thing she had to study learn.  Have we got it all wrong here in the US?
That's definitely a video I need to see a few times in order to wrap myself around all those statistics.  What I will comment on, specifically, are on China and India.  I suppose we can compare them to the U.S., but how do we do that when our population is so much smaller than either of the other two countries?  I'm more interested in knowing what the percentage of these figures is to the population.  That would give me a better idea of how the U.S. compares with other countries.  Also, this is most definitely a site I will be passing on to friends!  I can think of a few choice bible verses that go along with this site...

No family should have to live through what the Hudson family is grieving right now.  I don't know much about Jennifer Hudson, but my heart goes out to her and her sister.  I hope they are allowed to grieve in peace.

Hi Anna and Jackie and Laurel and Lisa and Matt and Celine and Phyllis and did I miss anyone else?  I'm starting to feel well enough to be reading blogs again so I've got a lot of comments to catch up on!
The reason why our kids do not pass the smell test anymore is because of the media. They are afraid they might have to actually do some researching to report the truth. The news media should have come up with this a long time ago nut they are to lazy. They can not even report about the economy right and who caused it. Well one guy can but he does not have a camera to talk into. Do not believe me see for yourself.

All this instant information and not one word on the NBC's website that Sarah Palin was hung in effigy in California today and it is circulating on the other major networks' websites.  Shame on you NBC.
I have watched the news ever since the bailout bill was passed.  Not one media source has published the names of those who added "pork" to the bill. If people are to make intelligent decisions they need to know what these politicians are doing to us. Did you know Nancy Pelosi added $33M. for American Somoa?
Very interesting and mind=boggling. And just think with all this information and technology advances, as a society, we're going down the drain just as fast. God help us!
The bit about what you learn becoming obsolete by the time you graduate is fascinating to me. As a graduate student, I appreciate that my parents and former teachers throughout the years instilled in me not only a desire to learn, but taught me how to learn as well.

If you know how to learn, the door is wide open to you. Go to college to learn a trade or assume you'll come out knowing everything you need to know and you're behind the pack from the starting gate.

I'm in Psychology and there is a tremendous effort now, more than ever before, to determine how people learn and how we can use these new technologies to make learning more efficient. It's an intensely fierce debate, especially with the future of our country seemingly at stake in the brains of our children.
What a bunch of Liberal freaks you are (the ones that decide what gets posted) My response was about the article more than Jackie Rawlings Riverside California was.

How does "Ted Stevens needs that Bush magic wand like Libby got. " have to do with the post, nothing but it is a slam on McCain so you let it pass. You must be some snot nosed kid who does not know how to think for himself but has to be told what to think and do. What a bunch of LLLLOOOOOSSSSEEEEERRRRRSSSS!!!
Interesting video, but so what.  We have already been so indoctrinated by our education system that we are headed to the bottom of the heap--just where the liberals want us.

Sen. Stevens (R-AK) is a legitimate continuing story.  Why aren't Rep.(rehensible) Mahoney (D-FL) and Rep. Waxman (D-MI)?  Oh, yeah, the D.
Now Kelly O'Donnell is putting words in your mouth,  at the end of her report on monday she said, " his advisors are telling me they do see the tightening you talked about.."  As you know, you didn't say that, but she's so in the tank for McCain(still?) she's dragging you down into to her partisan gutter.  Not good for you. You should tell her to stop.
Wow, 'some impressive blogs'. I agree.  I kinda am a spiritual person, so I would lean towards saying,  to look at the human body....we know it is god's masterpiece, so if we work, love to live, and don't take Him for granted, we might just come to understand that we have everything needed to finish. Hope you agree. and my thoughts are with Jennifer.  If I could comfort her, I would. The media has been there for her though. Bye Brian.
As with all MSM reporting, I am not sure everything in the video is true but wha is true is the fact that developments around the world will continue at warp speed. More of a reason we need to get our kids out of the current government indoctrination centers and develop a school system where schools have to compete for their student base. We spend more $/student now than any other country in the world and get kids out of school that cannot make change without the cash register telling them how much to give you back. Government must get out of the school business if we are to compete with the global economy in the future.
What was up tonight with that wacko local newscast lady asking Joe Biden about Obama and Marxism? Why did that make the news? It seemed to fit with the GOP smear that ran in the next segment, the one about Obama and "spreading the wealth." Right wing liars are claiming Obama wanted the Supreme Court to redistribute all our wealth. McCain started this with out of context quotes from a seven year old Obama interview. McCain's latest hit job has already been debunked all over. Why did NBC run it, on top of the crazy question about Marxism? If Nightly News reported any of this, the report should have been about how the GOP takes quotes out of context because they are desperate.
Let's put aside all the war and start working together. We need each other too much.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, I say hello to you from Phoenix this week while I visit the city. It is truly a scenic place. I watched your broadcast at 5:30pm out here in Phoenix and it was a fine broadcast as always. First of all thank goodness it is only 8 more days until election day. Certainly alot of campaigning in tghe battleground States. Of course I am visiting the home State of Senator McCain so it is most favorable for him. But other States are undecided and judging from the broadcast reports of Kelly O'Donnell and Lee Cowan each is bringing huge crowds of supporters to rallies. Time will tell next week as to how all this is going to turn out.
On another note it is truly tragic what has happened to the Hudson Family. The report by Mr.Tibbles certainly showed how sad the news of finding the 7yr old nephew. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jennifer and her family.
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Hope to see you soon again on Nightly News!
XOXO

Thank You for sharing this video Mr.Williams. Certainly some interesting statistics.
Powerful Information. Something to really think about for a while.
Peace to You and to All!

Hi Brian,

why did you show the chart of the German DAX to indicate the downturn of the US stock market in last night's broadcast?

That story surrounding Jennifer Hudson is very sad. But why did Obama not fought the crime. Michelle Obama lived at the South Side of Chicago (where the murdering of Hudson's nephew occured), now he is a Senator for Illinois in the US Senate. What the hell did he do there? Obviously nothing to fight crime, when in Chicago the murder estimates are about 429 or so. When he lived there, now in the Senate he did nothing, instead he was busy running his Presidential campaign for the last year and the half, instead of fighting crime through law amendments in US law to prevent gun crimes or murder in the largest city of his state. Barack Obama is a danger to domestic violence, because as a President he certainly will not focus on preventing gun violence.

Obviously Michelle Obama did also nothing against murder in the city of Chicago. She was a hospital administrator who obviously gained money when hurt people were admitted to hospitals, because the healthcare benefits would go directly to her, as a board member of the University of Chicago Hospitals.
This is the reason it's possible to research timely topics and know who in the media is telling the whole truth, who's embellishing it and who is telling half of it. Technology has made it easy to detect biased reporting.

I saw that Canada and other countries are going around America when it comes to the free trade agreement if the Dem. that control of the gov't., is it possible that the wall street mess is a side effect that is caused by the way the polls are going, and may never get better if we don't have checks and balances in are gov,t.
Please don't vote for me,,,  No one knows how I vote...  before the final election..  Brian and all news casters call the election way before time.. and it lets people think their choice is gone...  So please don't speak for the Great State of Washington Before election...  You really don't know which way we swing!
During the report regarding the murders of Jennifer Hudson's family members, I could not help but notice the failure to mention the citywide gun ban in place in Chicago. Bans do not work. (Do I state the obvious?)
It is indeed a scary thought that radicals Pelosi, Reid and Obama could be running this country, taking money from hard-working individuals and re-distributing it to those who won't work and don't pay taxes and left-wing organizations like ACORN, which Pelosi tried to put in the bailout for a sum of 2 million bucks until the Republicans rebuked her for it. You won't find that info on the liberal media outlets.
Brian I decided I'm going to be a ghost reporter here's my news.

Banks admitted that they'll keep on hoarding taxpayers money until Jan. 20th

McCain's workers walk off on robo calls after hearing plot to kill Senator Obama.

The following GOP Senators were named in a memo as running a covert campaign with Freddie Mac. Here's their names:
The senators were Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Christopher "Kit" Bond and Jim Talent of Missouri, Conrad Burns of Montana, Mike DeWine of Ohio, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Olympia Snowe of Maine, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, George Allen of Virginia, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Mike Crapo of Idaho, Jim Bunning of Kentucky, Larry Craig of Idaho, John Ensign of Nevada, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, George Voinovich of Ohio and David Vitter of Louisiana.

Syria was attacked by terrorist aggressers which killed 8 innocent people. The United States terrorist action will be reviewed by the United Nations.
The video is being used around the country to generate discussions on how our schools need to adapt to the changing landscape faced by our kids once they get out into the workforce and the world at large.

One consideration is how technology should be used to improve and enhance the learning environment and educational processes in our schools. For instance, should we pursue putting a laptop in the hands of every middle-school student, and what are the expected benefits, ramifications, risks and costs of such an effort?  We're looing at that in our middle school right now, and there's a lot to consider before we reach any conclusion!

FYI - You can find more background information (including sources for the statistics presented) on the "Did You Know?" video at:

  http://shifthappens.wikispaces.com/
Interesting video, and I think it says we realize the world is being transformed and we may not be king of the hill anymore. What do kids really need to learn and what is the best way to teach them? Spending two hours each evening supervising elementary school homework, I think about education a lot. And if you stop and think about the levels of functional illiteracy in the United States (I think I saw a figure that 1 in 5 adults are functionally illiterate), you have to wonder how that affects the outcome of the election. If you do not know how to sift through the blizzard of competing claims, if you have the Internet but don't know how to find reliable information, if you don't even know that your information isn't reliable, what good is this brave new world?
There's a basic problem here when depicted we are trying to excel, but, then send laptops abroad when local schools are struggling with antiquated sytems due to low/no budgets!  Education is fundamental and needs to thrive everywhere.  But, let's not empower others b4 our own country though.
Does anyone know if there is a version of this video on YouTube?  (If there was, Brian probably would have just posted that, but I figured I'd ask anyway)
Andrea Mitchell should recuse herself from reporting.

On Morning Joe she continued her habit of defending Obama by saying that he didn't really say what he actually said in the PBS interview.

She also said that Joe was talking about the LAST century when he was discussing our economic situation....and she suggested that he move on. How surprising that Andrea Mitchell is trying to repress any discussion of Alan Greenspan's part in this crisis.

How can NBC allow this?
Chris, Brian's link actually *is* to the video as posted on YouTube:

There are additional versions and sources of the video available here:

the link expired. can you post the video again? thanks.
I agree with Jackie Rawlings, I thought the exact same thing the first moment I heard the US attacked Syria in hopes they would attack us. This is a plan to get votes for Mccain at any cost.  Bush & his fellow Repubs scare tactics, "they always worked before, and they are very desperate now, they are ruthless and evil and drunk with power they have enjoyed for the last 8 years"  They want 8 more years of it -- and they will DO ANYTHING TO GET IT. Bush got re-elected because of 9/11 and his scare tactics.  The Repubs know it worked then and it could work now.
Brian,
first let me say that I am unable to view the video via the link. I am sorry, because I would love to participate. I realize this might not get posted since it is a general comment. However, I could not find a general email for you. Just one thought, are you aware of how often you use the phrase, "the notion" or "this notion of" when talking conversationally in an interview setting such as the McCain /Palin interview. You used it no less than three times. And I've heard you use it on other occasions. We also know that is a favorite expression of Mr. Obama. Do you see my concern? Articles have actually been written on how this phrase has become a part of regular usage by both print and other journalists. Is it the most important thing in the world, no. will it affect the out come of an election, probably not. But, it's one of the reason MSNBC and therefore by default NBC News gets the "liberal" or "favors Obama" tag. I watch Nightly as much as I can and you are hands down the best nightly anchor. Could you take a sincere look at this in your scripting or ad-libbing?
Here's the version Brian originally linked to last night (I finally found it)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL9Wu2kWwSY
Hi Brian,
After some reflection and real soul searching (you could call it an epiphany of sorts), I have come to the conclusion that I need to change who I will vote for.  I had been planning to vote for Sen. Obama because I felt he would lead this nation in a better direction, stir the fires of compassion and motivate the citizens of this country.  But I was conflicted because I didn’t agree with many of Sen. Obama’s viewpoints – particularly on abortion, stem cell research, euthanasia, and same-sex marriage.  I think that I (and many others), was so focused on the promise of a fresh start, that it was convenient to “overlook” the importance of these moral issues.  I now see that there is so much more at stake in this election than the economy. How the courts enact and enforce laws around such issues as same sex marriage, abortion and euthanasia will define our society for years to come. At this juncture, it is essential to have a Commander-in-Chief that will show moral leadership and courage -– and after much contemplation, I have decided that Sen. McCain will be that President.
