Fallen but not forgotten: Sgt. Timothy Smith

A memorial service was held last Friday at Arlington National Cemetery for a soldier who died in Iraq after his discharge from the Army was blocked and his enlistment was extended.

Sgt. Timothy M. Smith, 25, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., was one of more than 12,000 soldiers currently subjected to stop-loss orders, which force them to remain in the Army involuntarily.

"He should have been out," his father told the Tahoe Daily Tribune. "He had done his duty."

Smith had joined the Army in 2004 and had served a nine-month tour in Afghanistan in 2006.

"He was pretty gung-ho going to Afghanistan," his brother told the Daily Tribune.

But Smith's attitude changed after he returned home. He married Shayna Richards on July 4, 2007, and began the formal process of adopting her infant son Riley.

"He had a family to come back to, a wife and a son to come home to," his brother said.

Smith decided to leave the Army, but he was prevented from doing so by stop-loss. He was shipped instead to Iraq in November 2007 to clear roadside bombs and was killed by one of them on April 7, 2008.

"As much as you think that you prepare yourself, you can never, ever prepare yourself for something like this," Shayna told the Daily Tribune.

Smith's memorial service contained no casket or urn because his ashes had been scattered earlier by his family. His tombstone, inscribed "In Memory of Timothy M Smith Sgt US Army," was placed on a sloping hill of Arlington National Cemetery's Memorial Section K, not in Section 60, where most of the casualties of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are buried.

"I am very proud to be Timmy's mom," his mother said afterward. "He is a Hero, and always has been, and I miss him so much, but know I will see him again one day."

NBC along with MSNBC has lost credibility with me.  The final straw is the partnership of NBC with ACORN.  Two corrupt organizations trying to beg, borrow or steal the presidency for barack obama.  Get read to pledge allegiance to ObamaOmerica.
I was shocked at the 'soft' interview of both Sarah Palin and John McCain conducted by Brian Williams.  It was no more than free television time for the Republican candidates ... and apparently there's more to come.  I thought Brian Williams was better than that.  I never thought I'd say this but: Bravo Katie Couric!
I have been a dedicated viewer of NBC nightly news for nearly 30 years. As an independent voter not sure of who I'm voting for, I was disappointed at what many thought was a weak interview that Brian Williams conducted with John McCain and Sarah Palin. Brian did not ask any tough questions about the economy or foreign affairs, etc.. that would help me to get a better insight into what McCain/Palin's solutions are for solving issues that are important to Americans; like unemployment and losing their homes. Brian's interview amounted to nothing more than free air time for McCain/Palin to bash Obama. Hopefully part two of the interview will be stronger.
Dear Mr. Rutherford,

Thank you so much for your commitment to bringing us our soldiers' stories.  I know it is a labor of love for you.  Sgt. Smith's story makes me so very sad.  How can you help but say, "What if?"  It's a tragic loss.

I recognized the name Sgt. John Penich from the list.  He was featured in Richard Engel's report from Afghanistan this week.  What a brave young man.

My thoughts go out to the families, although I can never know their pain.
Francesca,
Maybe Brian is just used to interviewing the likes of Obama. Don't worry, I'm sure the "Palin Hate Fest" will return to your favorite news show.  Mr. Williams does need to keep working I'm sure.
I cannot help but mourn the men and women who were sent to die by men who did everything to avoid serving in Viet Nam.  My ex-husband did--and even though he saw no combat--returned a raging alcoholic who woke up screaming.  I learned he died before he reached 50.  If you want my take on this whole situation, please read Marc Antony's speech over the body of Julius Caesar in the Shakespeare play of the same name;read "Do Not Weep For War is Kind";read Slaughterhouse 9 by Vonnegut.  I will never denigrate what John McCain endured as POW . . . but thirst for power has corrupted his vision and age has dulled his brain.  Sarah Palin--and I AM a Feminist from when the movement began--needs to keep both her mouth and her legs shut.  Tina Fey would do a far better job because at least she is smart.  By the way, Sarah, how is that"abstinence only" policy working for you and your family?
H.L. Mencken once said: "No one has ever lost a nickel underestimating the taste and intelligence of the American people."  I think he is wrong--we've lost trillions by betting on a horse in a race that was fixed by the current Minions of Hell from the beginning.  Most of us who cannot have the RNC outfit us with $150,000 worth of clothes and makeup--and what the hell did she buy because it doesn't show--will be working forever because we may have lost our homes, our jobs, our retirement . . . and our sanity at wathing Ms. Palin blather incessantly about identifiying with "real Americans."  I am a real American.  I grew up in a town of 400 people in the Midwest and worked hard my whole life--as did my parents and grandparents.  I even have a relative who was on the shores to greet the Pilgrims.  I saved and put into my 401(K)only to have it driven into life support by the intelligensia of the country--graduates of Harvard, Wharton, et cetera--who have driven this country and its people into near bankruptcy while exclaiming "It's not MY fault."  Right now, Elvis could get elected if he were on the ballot . . . and I can't say I wouldn't vote for him just to get this group from wading knee deep in blood money while the country becomes a third world joke.  We have squandered our wealth, our innovation, our honesty and work ethic and our claim to the higher moral ground for 30 pieces of silver . . . and even at the higher price of silver, was it worth it????  In the name of all that's decent, Mr. "fill in the appropriate name of choice", HAVE YOU NO SHAME???????  I surrender the conch and the soap box, now.  I'll never get an answer that hasn't been carefully coached--or a chance to ask that question.
I can't believe how biased NBC has become! Who is this guy who gave his "professional opinion" on the body language between the candidates? We are laughing at his unbiased ananlysis! He has no clue about body language!
Maybe you at NBC think that the prospect of the new three stooges of BO,Nancy, and Harry are great for this country but the real original three stooges would run our country better than these socialists!
I am thinking to the song "American Pie" right now!
The day the news reporting died! It's been dead at your station for years now! Go JOHN AND SARAH!
Maybe after the election you at NBC will have a meeting and decide you will once again go back to reporting unbiased news! Body language expert!! We are laughing all around the country! The Roadrunner!
My family told me not to watch the McCain-Palin interview because NBC is well known to be biased, but I watched anyway.  After the show, I remarked to them that they were wrong because Brian did such a good job in allowing them to speak w/o subjecting them to a "final exam" as Couric did.  This morning on the Today Show things reversed themselves.  Brian did a hatchet job.  Brian, couldn't you find one nice thing to say about them.  Even O'Reilly was fairer to Obama in his interview than you were on the Today Show.  Give them a break.  They're only human beings!  Perhaps people are right about NBC.
Please understand that I am not a right wing ratical but I would like to know why the media (not just) NBC has become so unfair toward McCain?  Further why   not look into the questions raised about Obama?  I would feel alot better about your commentary if NBC would do this.
Brian only accomplished to tarnish his reputation as a newsman with the mushy-soft interview, actually a misnomer if ever there was one, of the McCain team.  Was this his most creative method to give McCain free commercial time- to balance Obama’s surplus of cash?   Very disappointing, he made Katie seem stellar in comparison. But, then he knows it.
I just don't get it-Mr. Williams gave softball questions to Sen Obama during the two interviews he conducted (not to mention how he fell all over Sen Obama), but to Sen McCain and Gov Palin he was hostile! I didn't think it was possible, that Mr Williams could be like that. I'm not really surprised that NBC is in the Obama tank, but Mr Williams showed his bias big time!! You'll all be crying on Nov 5 when Sen McCain becomes President-elect McCain! (and Sen Obama disappears in the depths of the Senate with his (and your best bud) John Kerry. (By the way, Kerry was up in the polls by a margin similar to where Obama is right now-Pres Kerry didn't happen! and neither will Pres Obama!
It's not that Brain did a bad or good job. The point is that he had the interview. It was free time for McCain to get on the stump. I was very, very disappointed that NBC would try and push their political bias in a night news format.
Why? Why? didn't NBC report that the war in Iraq is over and we have won a major war on Terrorist. This was reported all over Europe. Not one of major left wing news programs other than FOX NEWS reported this major victory. This is why you are dead last in your ratings with ABC and CBS on your coat tails.Brian and Tom B. are a greater thereat to this country then Al-Kda.We know how to deal with the enemy outside but not the enemy within, are own news media.Americans are so lucky to have a fair and balanced news stations.Thank you Fox News.P.S. I will be shocked if you print my comment, but then again I should expect it.

Other networks are reporting that Alan Greenspan is partially to blame for this financial situation. NBC is now demonstrating why there are "conflict of interest" rules, as Andrea Mitchell (the wife of Alan Greenspan) is not saying anything about that nor is any other NBC reporter.

So, in addition to covering up any negative news about Obama and Biden, Andrea Mitchell is also covering up negative news about her husband.

If Andrea Mitchell committed a murder, NBC would allow her to proclaim herself innocent and give her more air time.

Anyone looking for complete reporting without bias, need not look at NBC.

My husband and I watch Brian Williams every night, but were totally disappointed at his interview with Sarah Palin and John McCain. He had no follow up to any of his questions, and just allowed them to go on with their endless talking points. When asked about the endorsement of Barack Obama by Colin Powell, they followed up with McCain getting the endorsements of several other former Secretaries of State, however, Brian should have at a minimum followed with, "of course you would expect to get former Republican endorsements, but here is a leader of your party, giving  very comprehensive reasons for endorsing your opponent, based on your judgements, and policies", and what would his response have been? Even journalist 101 would expect a follow up question, when the person being asked the question gives an obvious answer to what could have been a debate worth hearing. Shame on Brian Williams for such a wimpy, soft ball interview. I don't know if I can convince my husband to watch his show anymore. Notice, that none of Brian's colleagues could even compliment him on his performance, and he spent the morning trying to say that he had to wait 55 days for the interview, and he was restricted by the campaign as to what he was allowed to ask. Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson can hold their heads up high. Kudos to both of them!

Then this morning on the Today Show Williams reversed his personality.  Brian did a hatchet job.  Brian, couldn't you find one nice thing to say about them.  Even O'Reilly was more balanced to Obama in his interview than you were on the Today Show. Perhaps people are right about NBC. I won't be watching or listening to you or NBC again - either you have balanced reporting/interviewing ALL the time or people can't know when to listen to you - you have lost me forever!
After reading the above comments I must remind Americans our soldiers are not a Policial Party but these Military men/woman are first Americans. We should respect their sacifice and their families lost. McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden are not the issue.
NBC is the only news Media that keeps up with what is happening to our soldiers that many talk about but really have no interest.

Mr. Rutherford should be given an award for letting us know the truth OUR SOLDIERS ARE DYING EVERYDAY. If Americans paid enough attention to our troops instead of watching American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Sarah Palin uneducated answers and her spend baby spend, maybe just maybe our troops would be home. Each soldier in the fields has asked why are we herre?  Americans show very little interest as the White House propaganda Generals read their pre written lines. The White House, Rice, Powell and others sit back and watch as over 4000 plus as these troops have nothing, get nothing and are forced to stay in Afghanistan/Iraq until their dead or of no use anymore.  America once honored it's Military by not sending them in Wars based on out right lies. Each death of a soldiers is the full responsiblity of our Govenment and each and every American.
This is War and America has also killed innocent Afghans and Iraqis let's also pray for those deaths. We will learn the truth of how some of our soldiers also died in friendly fire because of lack of equipment ans supplies.

Thank you Mr. Rutherford as I'm a Military Mom who knows the truth and will speak up for all our soldiers. While this election uses every thing from race to lies our troops are of all colors and races it would help if Americans remembered that when they see the coffins come home with our dead.
If Sarah Palin is qualified to be V.P./Pres why does the RNC feel that she isn't qualified to be on Meet The Press by herself?
To those that complain about Sarah Palin, have you looked at the excesses of your own candidate.  What did the outfitting of obama plane cost? the greek columns?  Are you ready to spread the wealth around?
Brian- I watch your program every night and have believed that you were a journalist of the quality of Walter Cronkite until this ridiculous interview with McCain and Palin-- It does not warrent all the time you have given it during the Nightly newscast and you were much too soft on the question of JUST HOW John has been tested - heck he was sitting in a plane waitinbg for orders.  I will fully expect EQUAL time for Obama-Biden .. but don't pull your punches ...THEY will actually answer the questions instead of continuing to dig and slander and do that "gunslinger, knee-jerk, George Bush stuff" that is meaninless and demeans the American political process.  John McCain was once a man of honor--but he has sold his soul to the republican meanness/hatefulness machine.  And you Brian are beginning to act like your mentor who could never hide his political leanings--Man up , brother...you are better than that!
NBC  is the only news cast I watch in the evening.I was extremely disappointed with Brian Williams interview with McCain/Palin. Whatever happened to the nightly news? You know- The war, the economy, etc.  I certainly don't tune in every night to hear an info commercial. So will Obama/Biden get equal time? And god help me,  I will subjected to more of the same tonight.
I have watched NBC nightly news for 30 plus years and over the last several have been disappointed in the very slanted one sided method in which it is presented. I am very open minded, but NBC and MSNBC have gone so far left that even my open mindedness can no longer bare to watch. We have 6 televisions in our house, all of which have had all NBC channels and associated channels blocked. We charish free speach in our country, the news media was there to share that with us and provide us the news NOT opinions.
Brian: PLEASE tell me that you will give Obama/Biden equal time next week!!! Doesn't matter that you couldn't get Palin earlier. You're not being an unbiased network if you don't give equal time.
NBC News:

I presume that you will provide equal time to Obama and Biden on the Nightly News.  I was disturbed as to how soft the interview was, almost like a free paid political announcement for McCain and Palin.  What was NBC thinking?

What bothers me most so many things have happened in the past and all were commited by muslem and Obana could be another that would bring shame to our country If he just did not have the muslim background I feel that that he could be a good president, We need to just take the color of the man out of the picture and not just vote for him to become the first man of color and I pray that there is never another attact like the 911 and all of the other things that muslims have been connected to we need to do a lot of praying   for this election and for our country and seek Gods will for who ever is elected and if each of us honor one another and seek Gods guidance with our own feelings, Thank you
Just do not like to see anyone attacted just pray that all will remember that we are all concerned about who will be become our next president
I just saw your "interview" (if you can call it that) with McCain and Palin. Palin would not be in the position she is in if not for feminism -- a fact you should have pointed out.  You allowed her to go off an tangents that amounted to a speech not an interview.  You should have pressed on the issue of bombing abortion clinics being terrorist acts.  She stated that what qualifies as a terrorist act is an act that targets innocent people -- like those that work for and use abortion clinics.

Being a New Yorker, I feel the lowest point of the interview came when you asked McCain about elitists.  He stated they live in DC and NYC.  Really?  Like the elitists that died on 9/11 in the WTC?  Many well educated, successful people who he would most likely consider corrupt since many worked in the Wall Street environment.  Shame on you for not calling him out on this.
Sgt. Smith's story is one of the sadder stories you've shared, John, if that is even possible.  He served his country; his country wouldn't let go of him, and it killed him.  How fair is that to his widow & son?  I am sorry that we took your husband away from you, I want to tell Mrs. Smith.

Usually I am one to say that politics don't belong on this particular thread because it disrespects the ones who are mourning.  This time, though... I feel the anger welling inside.  I will not vent my politics here, but please know my heart goes out to the Smith family.
I am joining the growing throngs of NBC News fans who feel that Brian has done a very "soft" interview of McCain and Palin. Maybe the network is caving to heavy pressure to be less "democratic"; maybe Brian is just trying to be non-controversial.  Regardless, the press has the responsibility to press the test and get to the truth.  Why, tonight, was there no follow-up on the Ayers question.  if McCain has other information to counter what Obama has claimed is his relationship with Ayers, make him produce it or stop saying/implying that Obama has not been telling the full story.  Ask the question, don't let McCain/Palin leave the "question" open.  What about the interpretation of the role of the VP that Palin really screwed up?  That should be pressed as a question from the press:  "Do you really think the VP is in charge of the Senate"? All in all, not a good reporting job, just an opportunity for the candidates to express their positions.  Brian, you know better.
Why is it that McCain/Palin cannot answer a question directly, without bashing Obama? Regarding the question on Domestic Terror; Obama answered what his relationship was with Bill Ayers in the last debate. Why didn't Brian bring that up when McCain said that Obama has not explained his relationship with him? McCain keeps talking about Obama's negative ads. I think McCain should look in the mirror!
I am amazed at how people suddenly become brain dead around election time.  They act like sheep, mindlessly following the herd, jumping to the right and left at the least sound or distraction.  How can anyone not see how biased 90% of the media is for any Democrat, not just Obama.  All the statements about how "soft" Brian Williams was on McCain and Palin are just silly.  Did any of you watch last night?  Did any of you happen to notice the preface of both interviews?  Last night, just before the interview they/he chose to tell us about the $100,000+ wardrobe affair and tonight he told us that Palin would be giving testimony in the "trooper-gate" inquiry tomorrow.  Both nights, the interview was prefaced with something negative about Palin, and then he proceeded to masterfully set both McCain and Palin up for failure.  He wasn't soft on them.  He's smart and knew exactly what he was doing.  Just like Charlie Gibson used the term "the Bush doctrine".  How many times did you ever hear that term used, prior to his interview with Palin?  Come on... are you really as blind as you seem?
Then, let's not forget the two day story about the $100,000+ wardrobe.  What did you expect her to do?  Go to WalMart to select her outfits for the campaign trail?  OK... just to be fair Brian, ask Obama and Biden how much they spent on their wardrobe?  How about Michelle?  I'll bet she shopped online at JC Penney.  Right?
Just one more thing Brian, just to be fair... be absolutely certain you have some negative "newsy story" to present as your lead-in to the Obama-Biden interviews.
I, along with others sending messages, was very disappointed in the Brian Williams' McCain/Palin "interview."  Rather than an interview, it was free air time for their campaign. Half the broadcast time was filled with speeches, not real answers to questions, and most of those speeches were the same old rehearsed campaign rhetoric.  What happened to other events in the world for those two nights?  Brian did not follow up with penetrating questions which would have given a less biased appearance.  I have watched Nightly News and really like Brian because I feel that he gives an unbiased account of the news, but two nights of McCain/Palin blather with the promise of a third has totally turned me off.  Certainly you must now give equal time now to Obama/Biden.

To the family to Sgt. Smith:
I am so very sorry for your loss.  I hope that Riley will someday understand that his dad was a hero, working to protect his fellow soldiers.  I hope that God holds you close and you find some comfort in knowing that someday you will all be together again.

Enough of these two. How about some equal time for Obama and Biden
I agree with most of the posts saying that the McCain/Palin "interview" was a non event etc.  It is noted that the "interview" with Obama will be aired during the week just prior to the election.  People remember the things they saw last best and it is suspected that that was the reason for and timing of these "interviews".  Also, the segment on Afganistan  was an obvious effort to create anti war sentiment which would favor Obama,  Your prejudice is thinly veiled.  Yes, we need a change.  The damage that Bush has done to the U.S. and the Republican party is incalculable. He is an absolute disgrace! BUT let's not throw the baby out  with the bath water.
For those of you posting comments about politics and interviews in a comment section about fallen soldiers - SHAME ON YOU.  It is wholly inappropriate. Save those comments for articles about politics, interviews, etc.  My fiance has served 27 of the past 39 months in the desert and I feel for this soldiers family because a very small minority of families are actually carrying the phyical, emotionals, and financial burdens of the protracted war.  I'm voting with the party that wants to try to end this whole mess.  I am sick and tires of hearing about time lines and time horizons and open-ended resolutions.  The funny thing about a horizon is that try as you might, you can't ever actually get there.
