Tell it to the Marines

Posted: Thursday, October 09, 2008 2:27 PM by Daily Nightly Editor

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

I just returned from one of my favorite things. Every year I speak to a group of about 100 U.S. Marines -- mostly Lt. Col.'s and Col.'s -- all of them just back from either Iraq or Afghanistan or both. Many are base commanders and XO's; all of them thoughtful warriors. I'm flattered to be invited to spend time with them during their week-long gathering in New York every year. As is always the case when I spend time with the military, I get much more from being around them than they could possibly get from my remarks. But that's just the way it is. They had a ton of questions about public perception of our dual wars, the financial mess and the upcoming election.

I found a sobering video on the New York Times website last night, and I recommend it to all who are looking for some historical perspective on the current financial crisis. It is serious and sobering and features two of the paper's veterans talking about the topic they know best...their life's work, and our shared financial state.

I hope you can join us for our Thursday night broadcast.

Using the word "evaporate" to describe the losses in the stock market is a misnomer. The value of investor's portfolios and 401K's has decreased a lot. But when the market recovers, and it will, the value of those investor's portfolios will increase as well, assuming they didn't sell everything.
Nothing in new in the Stock Market as the Asian Market is in trouble and are have a plan to correct it. Most Countries are solving the problem on their own and will move forward without the US. Now I see the Middle East stepping up as they have the cash money to solve Economic issures. I think AIG was the example of how the US handles problems yes spend and party with others money.  Goldman Sachs is the biggest winner and only one standing tall as the plan worked.

Mystery solved: Gov. Spitzer found out the Scam by the Govenment and Wall Street as he was about to expose the crimes he was brought down quickly so we could see what we see today. I thought something wasn't right when I read Sptizer's article in the New York Times in the early 2008. Well we weren't paying attention and now it's to late. David Walker form US Controller was yelling it from the roof tops when the Bush Policy took place in 2001 but again no one listened.

Sarah Palin's Troopergate case finding will come out tomorrow that should be interesting. She should have called Dick Cheney on how to commit a crime but keeping her hands clean.

I'm off to Hollywood for a Hillary fund raiser for Obama again. Oh if you want to know why Obama gets so much money he has over 150,000 people working to raise funds.

Just heard McCain back tracked on his save the homeowners plan he told in the Debate. Now he says it wont be done. To bad for those homeowners who thought they had someone working for them, McCain will keep the plan to continue big bouuses for CEO's, that's good news for a few.

See you at 6:30 from Hollywood

Best to Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anna and Matt
Dear Brian, not exactly on point, but very much on my mind. As the media seems to have already elected Mr. Obama - has the thought ever occurred to you (since I don't think it has occurred to any of the "expert pollsters" out there yet) that they  MIGHT be basing their predictions on the fact that a great many people voted for Mr. Obama in the primaries who were in fact just voting AGAINST Hilary and who just might NOT vote for him in November. My wife is one and no pollster has checked the score at our house. ... Maybe there will be a BIG surprise coming to a lot of folks come Nov. 5. ...
Why hasn't MSNBC reported about the ACORN voter registration fraud in NV, OH, TX, FL, Indiana, and so many other states? Why hasn't this network talked about how this form of ACORN vorter registration is a serious distruction of our democratic progess and our rights to have clean elections.  ACORN requires a quota of registered voters for the member to get paid, so in NV they registered ever member of the Oakland Raiders to vote in the State of NV, causing  the FBI to raid the records and closed the LasVegas office.  Why hasn't MSNBC reported that the largest contributer to ACORN was $800,000 so far since the the beginning of the campaign was Barack Obama, and last month even though there are many law suits in many states because of this kind of registration fraud he continued to give them over $200,000 from his campaign funds just last month?
here's a question of the financial mess... if everybody's selling, who's buying?
Good Evening Mr.Williams, First of all it must have been very nice to be able to speak to the US Marines back from either Iraq or Afghanistan. Such true heroes who dedicated to serving their country. I'm sure they had many questions being a very troubling time in our nation. The Dow plunging to 8000 or so is disturbing to everyone and one wonders when it will end. I watched the video from th New York Times and it was interesting and brought to mind the times of the 1930's financial crisis and how it relates to the current financial crisis. Things can be learned from what happened back then and I hope there is a bright spot somewhere to be found in this mess.
Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Hope I see your reports soon on Nightly News!
XOXO
Dear Brian,

Speaking of colonels, I see Colonel Jack Jacobs's book has come out.  I look forward to reading it.  He seems like a very decent and honorable man.

I read a very disturbing article in yesterday's Washington Post.  It was on the front page, below the fold.  It should have been above the fold.  I couldn't believe it.  Is this America, or the Soviet Union?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/07/AR2008100703245.html

To Jackie:  I wrote you a message on Tuesday's blog, but it hasn't posted.  I was responding to your comment about Barbara's Home Cooking restaurant in Franklin, Tennessee.  Here's what I was able to find:

http://www.hollyeats.com/BarbarasHomeCooking.htm

Doesn't it look good?

Good night, and lots of love to the usual suspects:  Lisa, Jackie, Stephanie, Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.  XOXO

My parents are pushing 90 and can't believe this is happening again.  They saw what happened to their parents and can't believe that they have to live through it again as seniors.  We Baby Boomers are probably in the best financial position to weather this storm as are our grandchildren, because they will have the opportunity to do it right.  It's our children and the surviving members of The Greatest Generation (thank you, Tom Brokaw) who are suffering at the hands of corporate greed and 10 years of a government looking the other way.
My Father has past away but he told me a lot about the depression.  His family farmed so they never went hungry.  He said, "men would come to the back door looking for work".  Most of the time his parents did not have any work for them but my Grandmother would always, always carry the man a plate of food.  He would sit on the back porch and eat.  No one in this day would feed anybody that showed up at their back door.  My Dad said she would feed men passing thru 2 to 3 times a week.
Brian,
Instead of working for Obama's campaign, please cover the candidates in a fair manner. You can choose who you want to vote for on Nov 4th. How difficult can it be?! If you report 3 negatives about McCain, do the same for Obama.
The strangest thing I've noticed about the way the economic winds are blowing. I'm seeing more people who are able to spend money spending it on services like home repair, especially if they know the service provider through church or civic clubs. I couldn't say that it's going on all over the area, but it does seem like a small scale way of paying it forward.

Looking forward to see your coverage of another day on the downhill slopes that we once called Wall Street.

I would like to express my appreciation for Brian Williams & the talented NBC news team.
Every night over the last several days, they have had to report bad to worse news.
No matter what it is, I know it is going to be straight talk and it will have facts to support it.
Thank you for what you do.
I appreciate seeing NBC's Nightly News showing John McCain in a positive light tonight. It was a breath of fresh air, thank you.
Brian,
I have been a fan of NBC news for over 55 years.
The favoritism you and your reporters are showing John McCain is upsetting. I hope things will change shortly. I like to consider myself independent. For that reason I don't watch Fox, I hope I don't have to change another old habit.
I have always respected you as a independent reporter, hope to be with you for a long time.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast this evening. Although it seems there is not much good news to report right now. First of all the terrible economy and hearing about all these different States laying off so many employees and trying to create taxes to add to the budget to help their own struggling economy is just so depressing. The report by Mr.Sanders from Charlotte concerning Wachovia shows how so many finanacial institutions are in need of help and it being the home base for Wachovia it caught people off guard. It has a huge ripple effect on everything. Too many big names in finance have been "gobbled up" so to speak making this a truly scary situation.
The report by Mr.Tibbles from Chicago concerning the Sheriff of Cook County suspending evictions of people from their homes appears to be a good thing because in this economy it is so very hard for people. For many it is not their fault making it unfair for them to be put out on the street. One can understand th law needs to be followed, but sometimes exceptions can be made depending on circumstances beyond peoples control.
So much bad news to report Mr.Williams, your suggestion of watching Saturday Night Live Thursday edition tonight is a great idea. Everyone needs to laugh!
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Mr. Williams, I am writing to tell you how much I appreciate your news broadcast. Many of us find the news condescending and biased. I often flip channels in search of a station that just broadcasts the news instead of trying to convince me that I am a minority if I don't back their candidate. Lately, I find myself staying with your show instead of searching. Thanks so much! And when are you going to host SNL again. You were the best! Have a good evening!
I should be a have a job with all this work. Congressman McCain worked closely with Mr. Keating and with Keating's help McCain was reviewed on for his conduct as Senator. These words McCain said to Keating ring formular " Till death do us part".

Brian the Iraq Stock Market is doing very well and up 20 per cent. Who knew? Iraq not only has a 79 Billion dollar surplus but a successful Stock Market. Things are looking good for Iraq, maybe they could give us a loan.

Now to the US Stock Market investors don't wont to be robbed like the US taxpayers are now. England will correct their problem and not deal with the US. Many more Countries will mostly follow. After watching AIG and Lehman Bros. robbed with a smile on their way out with the money, who would want to invest?

I was touched by a comment made by Senator McCain. He objected to Obama earmarks to a Science building for inter city kids. Strange I thought all kids know about and saw how the earth looked and was created. Silly me I lived in New Jersey and visited New York. Senator McCain does have a point keep low income minorities uneducated and they wont know. A Lady told me today if you don't know where you came from and where your at, you wont know where your going. Funny that's how slaves were kept uneducated and when they did learn well you know the rest. I saw Youtube video of people questioned after Palin's speech. Question asked how long have you known Obama, two years. How long have you known Gov. Palin, two weeks. Who do you trust Sarah Palin because I don't know.  That's what some think and will vote this election.  If nothing else this election will show why the US is so low while rated with other countries.

I'm having a great time in Hollywood see you tomorrow.

Best to my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anna and Matt
Mr Williams  I am very confused on the radio today I heard McCain talking about a friend of Obomas that tried to blow up government buildings a few years back. Is this not big newes???  I have given up on your newes show and will now have to look to other avenues for information. I am an undecided voter and trying to find all the info I can in order to make a competent decision on who to vote for. Your newes program is not reporting all that it can and should.  NBC has alwayse been my news station. I cant even find the story on your web site, you have let me down. Anyone out there who can tell me where to tune into for all the newes pease leave a note, I will check back tomarrow. Thanks Brad
Down memory lane and the Leaders we had.
I just read a letter from President Kennedy to the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy name Ernie Davis. The following:
Seldom has an athlete been more deserving of such a tribute. Your high standards of performance on the field and off the field, reflect the finest qualities of competition, sportsmanship and citizenship. The nation has bestowed upon you its highest awards for your athletic achievements. It's a privilege for me to address you tonight as an outstanding American, and as a worthy example of our youth. I salute you.

This is why a generation rose to work together and respect each other as it was our President who showed an example for us to follow. Let's hope we can get another great American who values equality for all.

Thanks for reading this
When you spoke to the Marines, did you tell them the awful things said about them from the likes of Murtha Kerry, Obama and the the rest of the Libs? Did you explain that the possible next Commander in Chief has no respect for the military and also that the media degrades their service when-ever possible?
One question only why dosn't NBC bring up anything about Acorn, and its abuses of voter registration and it's relation to Presidental canidate Mr. Obama???? And why do you seem too dismiss it so much is there extra money under the table for NBC or what is the problem of bring up Acorn, an organization under FBI investagation right now????
I am a "conservative" and will vote for McCain. If the U S constitution required candidates running for president to be under 70 years old, I would expect and demand that McCain drop out of the contest.
The constitution does have citizenship requirements. Based on accusations circulating on the internet, I am concerned that Obama may not meet those requirements. Please tell me, does Obama meet the citizenship requirements to run for US president that are specified by the constitution?
The aberation that is Obama will lead us into socialism. Barack has taken classes in the art of intimidation and manipulation and it has worked on too many Americans. Their stupidity has been played upon by this taunt radical in a suit and tie and they yell for more.

Look around because the America you see today will radically change and you won't be able to control any single facet of your lives if this left-wing socialist and his VP companion, Mr. Gaffe (Biden) is elected. Wake up.
Did you see the star on Oboma head in the last debate it was where a bold spot wood by.some are saying it is a gane sine . What is NBC,s think of this.
Mr. Williams,
As a parent of a US Marine that will be deploying to Afganistan in the next two weeks I am glad that you as a broadcaster takes the time to talk with our troops on a regular basis. In light of the current financial crisis we need to also continue to keep our troops in the public eye.  These men and women have the added burden of not only worrying about their own personal financial problems but all of them must keep their focus on the very difficult job they have of fighting an enemy that wants to kill them.  My son cannot have the thoughts of "How am I going to pay for this or that" in his mind while watching out for enemy combatants or IEDs.
I along with everyone else worry about our current finances but when I put it into the perspective of our troops my worries are nothing compared to theirs.
Backtrack Obama is going to lower Everybody's
taxes. IF he can get a tax cut bill through
congress by getting congress to accept
a cap on the most inflationary of all tax
issues, the ever expanding expenditures of
congress. Backtrack Obama is going to give
Everybody health care insurance. IF he can
get a universal health care bill through
congress, by getting the AMA and the Health
Care Professionals to accept a cap on the
most inflationary of all health care issues,
the ever expanding salaries of Health Care
Professionals. Backtrack Obama is going to
send Everybody to college. IF he can get a
universal education bill through congress by
getting college professors to accept a cap on
the most inflationary of all college expenses,
the ever expanding salaries of college professors.
Backtrack is going to solve all the financial
problems on Wall Street. IF Backtrack can get
his Wall Street bailout bill through congress
by getting CEOs to accept a cap on the
most inflationary of all business expenses,
the ever expanding salaries of CEOs.

Backtrack is going to do these four monuMental
things, even though None of them have Ever
beeen done, by Anybody. Even though Backtrack
Obama has Never gotten ANY bill through congress,
even though Backtrack has Never Even Presented
ANY Bill TO Congress. AND, he is going to snatch
defeat from the jaws of victory in Iraq. Half
of me wants Backtrack to get elected, just to see
him fail, but if he fails, we all fail.

I got no problem with Backtrack Obama trying
to sell you his snakeoil; he's a Politcian,
he will say Anything to get elected, hell, he
Has already Said Anything to get elected. But
there are gullible Fools actually lining up to
Buy his snake oil. That bothers me.

Brian,  It is important that Nightly News present a clear picture how  at his rallies McCain himself and running mate are whipping up an ugly mix of fear and anger towards Senator Obama.  There is no false equivalency on this issue; Andrea Mitchell has been dealing with this upfront on MSNBC - why don't you cover it on your program?  Do not, however, think that it is ok to claim that 'both campaigns are getting shrill' since that is a totally false characterization. McCain has decided to do anything to win by appealing to the basest of instincts no matter who ends up getting hurt in the process

From Talking Points Memo:

Note To News Orgs: McCain And Palin Are Partly Responsible For Unhinged Tone At Their Rallies
By Greg Sargent - October 10, 2008, 10:58AM
The news orgs are beginning to weigh in with big takes on what is unquestionably one of the most important stories of Campaign 2008: The pathologically-unhinged tone that McCain-Palin supporters are displaying at rallies of late.

The New York Times has a write-up here; The Washington Post has one here, and The Politico has one here.

This is a welcome development, and the stories are pretty good. But the news orgs are still dancing around the central story here: That McCain and Palin themselves are largely responsible for what's happening.

The Times, for instance, does say that McCain's rallies are worse than Obama's, but nonetheless bemoans negative campaigning on "both sides." WaPo very politely notes that McCain and Palin "drew on the crowd's energy" as they attacked Obama yesterday (actually, they fed the crowd's "energy"). And Politico says that the anger is driven by Obama's momentum and fears that McCain will lose.

No question, there are a number of factors at play. But surely the most important one is the role that McCain and Palin themselves are playing in creating the toxic hysteria that reigns at the rallies they are running.

Let's consider a partial list of what the McCain camp has done recently:
* The McCain campaign is going well beyond raising questions about Obama's association with Ayers, repeatedly insinuating that Obama is currently in league with a current terrorist.

* Palin has repeatedly accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists."

* McCain himself has embarked on an effort to paint Obama as a vaguely sinister enemy within, with lines like this: "Who is the real Barack Obama?

* When a McCain supporter at a rally yesterday ranted that the country is being taken over by "socialists," and called Obama and Nancy Pelosi "hooligans," McCain didn't utter a peep of protest, and basically agreed.

* Cindy McCain basically accused Obama of endangering her son and other troops serving in Iraq with his vote against an Iraq funding bill, even though McCain also opposed a funding bill because it contained a withdrawal timetable.

* Palin attacks the media almost every day, even though her supporters are abusing reporters at her gatherings.

* Palin attacked Obama over Reverend Wright, and the campaign didn't disavow it -- even though McCain himself said in April that his campaign supposedly wanted no part of attacks on Wright.

But here's the most important point: To my knowledge neither McCain nor Palin has uttered a single syllable of protest as their crowds indulged their fear and loathing of Obama. It's hard to overstate how reckless and lacking in leadership this is -- and how dangerous this is, too.

Even an establishmentarian like David Gergen is now alarmed at the McCain team's own role in fomenting all the fury. "There is a free-floating sort of whipping-around anger that could really lead to some violence," Gergen said last night. "And I think we're not far from that...I think it's really imperative the candidates try to calm people down."

Or listen to Joe Klein: "We are on the edge of some real serious craziness here and it would be nice if McCain did the right thing and told his more bloodthirsty supporters to go home and take a cold shower."

But neither McCain nor Palin has taken a single step to do anything like that. Surely that's the big story here.
I was struck by Janet Shamlian's report on the expanded use, and abuse, of the Safe Haven Law in Nebraska.  Thank the Lord some states are providing Safe Havens for unwanted newborns.  We are all shocked by how many people are willing to abandon their children.  This should give cause to all the people so willing to force women to continue with unwanted pregnancies. Having children is a gift but also a lifelong obligation.

On a lighter note, I took Brian Williams' advice last night and tuned into the Saturday Night Live news recap.  Good to laugh out loud in these hard times.
Good day. First let me say that I have always found you plesant to watch, and I hope you continue. I would like to know if anybody thought of lowering intrest rates on all cridet cards to a flat 5% for a year in lue of the 25-30% many are paying now. This could free much needed money into the system and help in recovery. Continue your good work. Regards Don.
Mr. Williams, I love the Nightly News. I tape it when I'm not home. Anyway, the other day at work, while talking about the economy (what else), someone had a great idea. Instead of rescuing the financial institutions, give $200,000 to every American citizen over the age of 18. We would pay off our mortgages, pay off our student loans, pay our credit cards, take a vacation, buy a vehicle, remodel our home, have money to heat our homes etc. I don't think we would spend the money on a spa vacation! Maybe some of us would even have enough left to put toward our retirement. For those who squander their money, let the chips fall where they may, no more bailouts after that. Thanks for listening.
Mr Williams  For the undecided voter you have failed as much as you could. After sending you a comment yesterday asking for you to report all the newes pertaining to the presidential election and having my comment not appearing on this blog I went elseware to find awnsers to my questions and have found that Obomas friend Mr ayres is a bad man. You have failed the american population and me by not reporting newes!!! Please quit your job and have a real newes man do the job. You sure cant handle it.  will be sure to pass the word to as manny people as I can not to watch your show. NBC needs to work on there placement of qualified peorsonel. after 40 years I will not watch your newes broadcast any longer.  Good luck Bradford R Wesbury
If Reagan is going to be remembered as the Man Who Brought Down Communism, will George W. Bush be remembered as the Man Who Brought Down Capitalism- we are about to Nationalize the Banks for heaven's sake !
I will no longer watch NBC nightly news nor its local station here in Baltimore area.  Your pro-Obama bias is unbelievable.  As a news organization , you seem to have a shocking lack of curiosity about any story that could shed light on Obama's past associations. Your reporting is lazy, and instead of asking Republicans if it is fair game to run these types of commercials why don't you get off your you-know-whats and investigate these allegations.  You are manipulating the information that Americans receive by omitting the undesirable information from Obama's past. You simply will not report it.  When you made a big deal about McCain leaving Michigan you didn't mention that Obama has given up in several states.   Your own people quiver at the sight of him.  You are not to be taken seriously anymore. You are a joke.
What about the corrupt Stroger and Daley political machines in Chicago which gave birth to Obama? Who was it that nurtured Obama to prominence after Bill Ayers (little rich boy terrorist) used his position at University of Illinois at Chicago to use his Annenberg Challenge position to help Obama gain and grow to help ACORN in it's criminal and illegal "voter registration" of hundreds of thousands of dead, imaginary, fake and illegal 'voters'. ACORN's intent under Obama's community organizing training was using these fake voters to steal elections and illegally advance their cause (among which was to generate thousands of sub-prime loans which have harmed our economy)as well as to destabilize the economy to fit their agenda of frightening the people into voting for the very ones who've done so much damage under cover of MSM deceptions.
NBC is censoring commentary which unearths it's shocking and upsetting biases re: it's lies by omission of Obama's unsavory past.  It's becoming clear that even this blog is censored and thusly becomes an Essential Lie, as NBC relentlessly posts it's obvious lapdog's commentary repeatedly on each blog, but censors my commentary and I now believe that of many others.  I see about a ten to one ratio of posted comments between mine and NBC's happy campers.  NBC should know that once credibility is lost, it's gone forever, which is what is happening now all across our land, from which the MSM will never recover.
