We are on the beautiful... and historic campus of the University of Mississippi for tonight's first Presidential Debate. For our team, its been a 3-day odyssey from Texas to Washington to Mississippi, all the while juggling the mammoth stories we've been following: the titanic struggle going on in Washington, the sense of suspended animation in the credit markets, and the dwindling number of days remaining until Americans make their choice for President. We are preparing our debate preview for tonight's broadcast, then we'll be back on the air for the real thing at 9pm Eastern time tonight. Thanks for being with us tonight -- what's a week without at least one multi-city road trip? Have a great weekend.

Its a week of accomplishment for some, keeping good journalist distracted.
Hi Brian -

I'd rather be at Ole Miss myself tonight - CT is under a flood watch and it is not pleasant here.

So glad that the issues surrounding this debate have been addressed and that the debate goes on schedule.  Have also been wondering about next weeks debate - The Republicans are playing a risky game with their new VP nominee.  How can they expect any informed voter to vote for a person who has never spoken out about their own beliefs, opinions or plans for what they will do if elected?

Photo Ops are fine for those who are simply 'celebrities'.  We are talking about a  nominee for the Vice President of this country who has never addressed the American voters in a normal Q. and A. session, or given a press conference.

I've never seen anything like this in all my years in politics.

Joan
Oh Boy New York in Mississippi. Please don't spread any of that New York tolerance we've seen way too much of lately around down there.
Dear Brian,

So, last night's 6:30 feed was a prime example of Murphy's Law, but you muddled through rather well.  I watched you again at 7:00 (and caught the breaking WaMu news) just to see if you would go live, and was happy to see all the bugs had been exorcised. It made me laugh to think that you and Jim Vance had been broadcasting, simultaneously, from the same building.  Did you see his suit?!  And the hoop earring?!  He is the best!

I wanted to mention that Major League Baseball has announced a program for helping those impacted by Hurricane Ike.  Here is a link to the details:

http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080919&content_id=3509885&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Also, I found a really interesting story on presidential daughters.  (I know you enjoy presidential histories.)  Here's the link:

Good luck on the broadcast tonight - no more gremlins! - and on your debate coverage.

Night night to all the regulars:  Lisa, Jackie (I can't wait till you're back in Cali, so you can start posting again!), Stephanie, Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.  XOXO
Hi Brian,

Can you tell me where I can submit a question for the debate that NBC is hosting in October?  I understand that it is to be a "Town Hall" format and questions from the audience and emails will be addressed.

Thanks
Being in the military Brian, we know a thing or two about road trips. It would be nice to be compensated as well as you are though.
I would like to know if the candidates considered the following approach to the financial crisis.

Instead of looking at the problem from the top down (saving financial intuitions) look at it from the bottom up (saving homes and families).  I just don’t believe that trickle down economics will work for the nation’s current financial problems.

A proposed Housing Crisis Solution:

Suppose you bought a home that is your primary residence and its market value has decreased to a value that is less than 120% of your current mortgage.

You have three options:

1. You can retain 100% equity in your home and continue with your current mortgage payments.
2. If you can qualify financially for a reduced mortgage, you can sell a fractional ownership of your home to a quasi-government agency and pay down your mortgage with this equity investment,
3. If you can not qualify financially for a reduced mortgage, you can sell 100% of the equity in your home to a quasi-government agency for the outstanding mortgage value and rent it back for the current market rate.

When the home is eventually sold, the quasi-government agency would share in any capital gain in proportion to its equity interest.

The quasi-government agency could then go the financial markets and sell shares in the equity they hold in these homes.

John McCain doesn't need to explain himself to anyone.  He was doing the nation's business and what we taxpayers pay him to do. You and your colleagues'
snide remarks never cease to amaze me.
Hi Brian, thank you for the story on the gas shortages in the Southeast, it's really scary here in Charlotte, NC. Any of the gas stations that are open either have a police presence or private security, there has been some scattered violence.  I've made a tank stretch 10 days......
Lisa, I just learned where Alpharetta, GA is (near Atlanta) and I hope the gas crisis isn't hitting you too hard, I know the Atlanta area has been affected.
Looking forward to the debate tonight, and am certainly looking forward to Tom Brokaw moderating the next Presidential debate.  Keep Ted Kennedy in your thoughts, I just heard on Hardball that he has been hospitalized.  Have a great weekend, everyone!
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another fine broadcast this evening from the University of Mississippi. Well, tonight is a big night for the Presidential Candidates in their first debate and I'm sure it will be interesting to watch. Such an eventful week with the financial crisis and the US government working on a bailout plan. I'm not sure this whole plan is going to work at all. Time will tell and I hope next week is better. Now on to the broadcast. The report by Michelle Kosinski concerning the gas shortage I certainly can relate to fully. There is still a big gas shortage here in Georgia. I did see one gas station on my way home this evening that had gas and there was a nice long line. Seeing Michelle standing at the gas station in the rain didn't look good. I think the rain would make it worse and hearing people were staying out overnight was disturbing, but I can fully understand why people would do that to get the gas in their car. Hopefully, things will get better next week and beyond into October.
The "Making a Difference" segment by Mr.Taibbi was really nice. Mr.Cook really is helping those wounded war veterans to forget the terrible memories of their service in the war zones and enjoy the peaceful and fulfilling time fly fishing. The veterans seemed to be relaxed and had some fun catching the fish and it doesn't matter how many are caught. All of them had such traumatic injuries and experiences this time away is so beneficial. Mr.Cook is doing something very helpful and good for these men. Good Piece!
The report from Haiti showed such massive devastation from the hurricanes and the people certainly need all the help the can receive. It was horrible to see how the people have to live on rooftops of homes and the floors of buildings because there are no other options for them. It is good some food supplies are coming into the region and hopefully more is to come. I hope things get better for the people in that area.
Finally, it was nice to see Mr.Brokaw in the broadcast and hear his insigth into the week's news stories and the debate this evening. I know he will do an excellent job on the one he is moderating.
Looking forward to your coverage this evening. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Have a wonderful weekend Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudie,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Hope to see you on Nightly News Soon!
XOXO
Brian
Does anyone remember Hoover bailed out the financial institutions in the 20's and caused the great depression. Rosevelt had to create programs that helped the middle class to fix the situation.

Ole Miss really is one of the most beautiful campuses in the South, and I always love to visit here.  At the moment, I am sending this via a friend's laptop ... we are here in The Grove at Ole Miss, where we have been participating in the "Rock The Vote" ... the music is loud and fantastic!!!  We will be watching the debate live on the big screens here in less than an hour.  The weather is beautiful, what we around here call "Chamber Of Commerce" weather.  There are just so many people here, and the atmosphere is very festive ... if I didn't know otherwise, I would think we were all here for Homecoming, anxiously awaiting the football team to make their run through the grove, with hopes of sighting one or more of the Manning clan.

I hope you had, or will have before you leave, the chance (if you're brave enough) to take a "stroll" around the Grove.  If you see/hear a blonde, wearing a lime green t-shirt with fuchsia "I'm a Mississippi Girl" lettering on the front, yelling and waving to you, that will probably be me :-).  I promise not to embarrass you too badly lol.

Last night, I had the privilege and honor of attending Tom Brokaw's Debate Overview Symposium, which was held here at the Overby Center.  Mr. Brokaw was amazing, and it was so heart-warming to know that he actually seems to really enjoy his times spent on the Ole Miss campus.

I'm sure that in a few days, I will think of some wonderful things to say about just how awesome Mr. Brokaw is, but at the moment, I am still awestruck.

Anyway ... for those of you not here, I wish you were ... it's the best!!!
I realize there is a lot happening.  May I provide your readers w/ an Ike update?

It is now days 14 post Ike in Houston. 2/3 of my neighbors are still without power and I live in the middle of the city- about 4 miles west of the Astrodome.  We've got mounds of fallen trees and vegetation accumulating on the roadside waiting for some idiot to toss a lighted cigarette out his car window- some piles in my neighborhood are over 7' high. That should be story should this stuff ignite.

But the good news for those suffering the gas shortage is that our refineries here have had little damage and power crews have restored power to most of them.  They should be up and running shortly.  Gulf oil fields are mostly open and shipping oil. Our ship channel has been cleared and is open to receive them.

Hope y'all get through this little snag in your plans.  We are.

When those planes hit the World Trade Center,
George Bush was reading a nursery book.
Even after 9/11, George Bush took more time
off from being president than anybody IN HISTORY.

When GEORGE BUSH has to call you to go to Work...

When your presidential candidate can't even keep
up with GEORGE BUSH's work schedule...

HOUSTON WE GOT A PROBLEM!
Hi!

I am actually a resident of Oxford, MS and a graduate of Ole Miss.  The entire communtiy is very excited that the first debate of 2008 is being held in our beautiful small town.

This morning I stopped off at a local bakery before taking my daughter to school.  Tom Brokaw walked in right before we left.  We spoke to him and he was very kind and gracious even as we interrupted his breakfast.  He gave us his autograph and even took a picture with my 6 year old daughter.  He could not have been nicer.

Thank you for the wonderful publicity, and I hope everyone had a nice, friendly experience in our town.

someone needs to explain to jim that the topic for the debate tonight was FOREIGN AFFAIR AND NATIONAL SECURITY????     what is his problem...?????
Watching the debate now...can Senator Obama show  enough respect to call "John", "Tom", "Joe"...by Senator McCain?
Can someone please tell Senator Obama to stop saying "John is appsolutely right".  He's feeding the dog....
So Sr. Obama...you negleted to tell us how much this Russian war is going to cost me (the American People).
Why do you suppose that McCain would not face Omaba tonight when speaking to him?  Is this a sign that if someone doesn't agree with him he can't even offer common decency of looking the other person in the eye to respectfully disagree?  I don't want a leader like that.
I listened to both men and I think that Obama won.  I am a veteran who has been to the desert several times.  The military do not want to be there and we know the real story. I feel sorry for those who believe McCain and his rhetoric about how we want to be there.  Those 600 military personnel who reenlisted there was doing it for the money.  Any person who reenlist in the desert gets the bonus ( money to persuade military to stay in ) is tax free.  So don't blow snow up our skirts that they do it for the fun.  Please spare me.
I have watched NBC everyday for many years.  This includes The Today Show and the 6:30 evening news.  I am so disappointed that each of you tonight as I have been told by many people that you are very biased.  You are doing all to tell mistakes of McCain, even immediately mentioning that Sen. Kennedy was out of the hospital and the way you said "I guess the message did not get to Sen. McCain."  I have enjoyed NBC  for years, but it is sad  the people on our news can not give "unbiased information" on the election.  I will continue to watch, but please be a journalist and not a campaign manager.  I only decided tonight for absolute certainty whom I was voting for.  It is for the simple reason that I feel like the experience is so important and I now feel more comfortable with him being President. I felt like he had knowledge of all the situations .  Thank you for the time.  Vicki Lyons , Winston-Salem, NC
NBC news got it right, but also missed the point re: Eisenhowers so-called 2nd letter after the D-Day invasion. It was not a letter of resignation (as you reported), but it did clearly indicate that Eisenhower took FULL responsibility for his failure. That was the point that McCain was trying to make re: the buck-passing etc. that is going on in Wall Street.
In this way, the so-called "correction" to what McCain said was slanted reporting.
McCain is our man.  Did anyone notice how many times Obama agreed with McCain's statements??  Did anyone notice the knowledge of places and people of foreign lands that McCain had which Obama was clueless too?  If people in the United States and abroad didn't see this we could all be in trouble. Sincerely.......

God Bless America
NBC -- I appreciated the coverage and the commentators summaries and insights. However I found it odd that your "Truth Squad" was offering facts not covered by either candidate. Why is that? For example, when analyzing McCain's comment on Obama's subcommitte record. The "truth Squad" addressed that and then gratutiously added commentary about Joe Biden and McCain. Why? When testing the truth of another McCain statement regarding Obama's spending and budget issues, your commentator thought it apporpriate to comment beyond the specific point raised by McCain and challenge McCain's proposals effect on the budget. Now why would that be? Shame on NBC for characterizing this section as a review of the candidates comments when in fact it was half that and half raising its own issues. If NBC wants to offer opinions and suggest that certain issues should be highlighted when a candidate did not do so (and the target therefore did not have a chance to respond)that's fine, just label it as such.
Is it true Biden will withdraw from the VP election due to health reasons and Hilary Clinton will be the new running mate?
I am registered as a Democrat, but one of those voters that hasn't decided yet and the debate didn't do anything to push me in one direction or the other.  I felt the candidates dodged most questions, and fell back to their same old political rhetoric.  I was a bit disappointed that the commentator didn't force the issue on direct answers to some of the questions.  A good example was the question on how they would prioritize their spending if the current bailout package creates situations that require that.  Both candidates dodged that question, never answered it.  Same was true when they were asked if they supported the bailout.  They did not directly answer the question.  In fact Mr. Obama's response that he hadn't seen the language yet was most disturbing.  Right or wrong my interpretation was that he doesn't know what's going on with it.  Mr. McCain never responded on the question (from Mr. Obama) of his support of funding and tax breaks for Oil companies, he dodged it, actually ignored it.  I'm also a little disturbed at the constant references from Mr. Obama and other Democrats (my own party) that everything that has gone wrong in the last 8 years is the fault of Republicans.  Haven't the Democrats been in control of Congress for two years?  Yet Mr. Obama seems to accept no accountability for any of our current problems in the economy.  What bills has he or the democrats sent to the president that have been vetoed, on some of the issues in this election, Universal health care, education for everyone, etc.  We suddenly find ourselves in the worst economic situation ever.  Undoubtedly, policies of the Republican adminstration contributed to our current situation, but the Democrats have been in a position of power for two years.  What have they or Mr. Obama specifically done in these two years to prevent the current crisis.  Any bills they have sent to the president on this that the president vetoed?  If not then why are they not accountable for lack of action to prevent the current crisis?  The notion that they were powerless to prevent this is a democrat cop out.  In the case of Mr. McCain, he often dodged any responsibility for current problems by saying he has been a "Maverick". Nothing but political rhetoric in that comment.  No accountability whatsoever.  He often cited his record, but never responded to Mr. Obama's charge that he voted with Mr. Bush 90% of the time.  I feel most dissappointed that the media never seems to call the candidates on the carpet for dodging questions.  Why can't you just say you didn't answer the question, and ask do you want to give me a direct yes or no answer or should I just move on and assume you want to dodge that question?  We want you guys in the media to get tough with these guys, please, so we see who we really are electing.  Thanks.
Brian, Brian, Brian!

I was planning to start a Brian Williams fan club, but after watching yesterday's broadcast I will have to hold off...at least for now.

Last night, Nightly News choose to feature David Letterman (from CBS) complaining about McCain's absence on his show, over President Clinton's explanation about the McCain and the debate on your own TODAY show -- INCREDIBLE. Maybe it's time to get out from behind your news desk in NY and DC and come to a Friday night football game here in Flint Michigan to really understand the voters...

I watched the debate on Fox and at the end I switched to NBC for the comments. I wondered if I had seen the same debate you all did. I expected an Obama slant by NBC and was not disappointed. I thought Obama did not do well and realized that he did not have a tele-prompter to help him. He makes great presentations, but off the cuff he is less than average. His “rounded “ answers amused me. Next week the debate should be very interesting.
Brian: your "truth patrol" that gave out info after the debate was disingenuous.  The reporter commented that John McCain stated that Eisenhower wrote two letters, one a letter of resignation, but that was incorrect. She stated that Eisenhower did indeed write two letters, but that one of them was not a letter of resignation.  She did not explain what the second letter was.  It is correct that the second letter wasn't a letter of resignation, per se.  However, it was a letter taking all responsibility for the failure of the invasion (in case it didn't succeed).  That was McCain's point: accepting responsibility for your actions and for actions taken under your direction.  To imply, as she did, that the second letter did not support his point was misleading and unworthy of a news organization of your caliber.  I believe you owe the American public an apology and a correction.
Thank you for your time.
Hello Brian.

I have one question that I feel needs to be addressed at some point by the VP candidates.  I understand this may sound terrible thinking about this, but have to face the facts that at some time, something might happen health-wise to any person, but particularly the new President elect.  You have to face the reality that Sen. John McCain is no spring chicken.  Again, I would never wish anything bad happen to him, but my question is "Are the vice president candidates going to be able to take-over if something were to happen to the President elect?"  I feel more confidence that Joe Biden would be okay and do well because of his experience, but what about Sarah Palin?  I feel this is a very important point to make and should help some independents make their decision.  Is there anyway you can bring this question up?

Thank you.
While each candidate would inherit a huge deficit, I believe there is a piece missing in the calculations.  Since McCain wouldn't change any of the current income tax rates and available credits to businesses, his calculation was appropriate. Wouldn't Obama's deficit be substantially less than calculated, as he intends to close the loopholes for business tax credits taken by the big corporations and tax those making over $250,000? That should increase the revenue base even if business' net income remains flat or slightly decreases.
Brian, it was so exciting to see you, and all the other national anchors and news analysts, broadcasting from my beloved alma mater, Ole Miss, and hometown, Oxford, MS!  What a long way this wonderful institution and town have come from the fall of 1962, when I was in 3rd Grade, and Ole Miss and Oxford were rocked by riots, killing 2 people, over the admission of an African-American person to The University.  To think that the first presidential debate featuring an African-American candidate was held at this university is truly amazing to me.  After so many years of negative publicity I'm so proud of Ole Miss and Oxford for moving beyond the past.  I'm also proud of our country for giving consideration to a talented leader regardless of their race.  And I'm proud of Senator Obama because he FINALLY got agressive tonight!  This may sound strange in the same sentence, but Go Rebels and Go Obama!!!
I jsut watched the Presidential debate and I have come to the conclusion that John McCain is not  the one for the President of the USA. Unless he can't hear, he deliberatly lied to the public about a few comments Obama had just made on the same stage with him. He is a veteran and I honor him for that but being a veteran doesn't make him a good person. Point in case. Why didn't Sarah Palen comment after this debate as did JoeBiden. What's she trying to hide.
And we must not forget about Rudy who did speak. Could this be that they have a lot of things in common, such as cheating on and leaving their wives for younger women and both think its OK.

I am a registered Republican voter but McCain showed me tonight that we need a change and its one that McCain is not willing to do.

VOTERS BEWARE BECAUSE THIS ONE                        IS THE BIG ONE I WE CONTINUE WITH THE SAME POLICES AND PRACTICES THAT WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING FOR THE LAST 8YEARS. WE'RE UP THE CREEK WITH OUT A BOAT.

Please read the following link about Eisenhowers letters..Then comment on the TURTH TOPICS.
Thank you
John McCain in his typical erratic style determined to freeze the benefits of the majority of Americans this should be noted and should not be emphasized enough. Do we really want a president who does not think anything through and simply makes a decision.
From Canada:
History & Poli Sci Grad (Stanford) requests
Brian Williams' apology to John McCain, in public, over denying Gen Eisenhower's written offer of resignation if D -Day had failed.
Mr. Williams: John McCain was correct and you weren't; it was rude of you when you were so obviously ignorant of one of the most important moments in Gen Eisenhower's life, which he himself long recalled afterwards - he wrote two letters before the go-ahead on D- Day. One was a speech if they were safely landed; the other if they failed - offering to take the entire responsibility and resigning his command.
A public apology to John McCain is due.
One last thing - the MSM, including NBC News and MSNBC is in the tank for Obama. We in Canada can see it, and it cheapens how America looks to the world.
 McCain and Palin both are worthy of more respect;
you can start with your apology (Also to raise the issue of Kennedy being back home and that McCain was not in the know yet was merely cheap - McCain has a legitimate friendship and to reach across the isle with his concern should be applauded - you don't start the post debate comments by A) a cheap shot
and B) saying McCain was wrong about Ike when it was YOU who were wrong about Ike!
P.S. McCain won the Debate
Best quote from the debate......."Your right John"  Senator Obama
Hi Brian,

I noted that in tonight's debate Senator McCain shared a story about General Eisenhower writing two letters prior to the Normandy Invasion. Your fact checker indicated that was not the case. While I have not been able to verify there were two letters, and I suspect there were, I was able to verify that the general did indeed write a letter if the plan failed. Here is a link to an archived image of that letter. http://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/d-day-message/images/failure-message.gif

I think an apology is in order here and I am not sure why your fact checker was so quick to refute that information.
Hello Brian,
My irritation with NBC's "Truth Squad" commentator compells me to write. John McCain was absolutely correct to refer to Dwight Eisenhower's second D-Day letter as a letter of resignation. In that letter, Ike states that (in the event of a failed invasion)"the responsibility is mine alone." To anyone who knows anything about military protocol, this was absolutely a letter tantamount to a resignation. Gen. Lee twice offered very similar wording to President Davis after both Antietam and Gettysburg. When an officer offers this type of letter to his superiors, he is not only accepting responsibility for his actions. He is resigning is fate to the decision of someone higher in the military chain of command. The "Truth Squad" reporter who concluded that McCain was in error about Eisenhower's second letter obviously knows nothing about history, nor military protocol. Senator McCain correctly interpreted the meaning of the letter as only a military man would. Unfortunately, some NBC staffer simply googled the letter, did not see the word "resignation," and gleefully reported that McCain didn't get his facts straight, a common affliction among the elderly. Not only is this a classic example of picking knits, it's picking knits without benefit of a proper a knit picker. But then, what else is new with the mainstream press? And for the record, I am an independent who until now, was on the fence. But this was my tipping point. This, Mr Williams, was the last straw. Thank you, NBC, for helping me to finally make up my mind. Please forward my regards to the "Truth Squad."
Sincerely,
Bill Van Velzer
Daleville, VA (a battleground state)
Hi Brian,

If given the opportunity, would you please ask Senator McCain if he is interested in privatizing social security accounts?  I'd be interested in his answer now that many American 401(k)'s have been hit hard.

Thank you!!
Dear Brian,
I'm a fan of you and the NBC Nightly news. Fan of Tom Brokaw too.  And I really really miss Tim Russert.  He would have been so great this election. I can't help but think how he is screaming at us from heaven. Anyway, I was looking forward to this debate and wow I was dissappointed.  Both candidates played it safe and basically I would say it was a tie. But I was dissappointed because I wanted them to explain the bailout. I really don't think they know much about it.  Maybe thats why it wasn't discussed.  I know 90% of Americans couldnt explain it to you.  I mean have you watched "Jay Walking". most Americans couldnt find Alaska or Colorado or Missouri on a map. Anyway, Obama and Mccain should have taken the time to talk to the American people, sincerely, and explain what the fuck is going on. its rediculous. And what is the deal with Sarah Palin. Joe Biden responded and Palin declined to appear. Did you see her interview with Katie? Did you hear her answer the question about foreign relations experience?  Dhould have just said no. I don't think I've ever heard a worse answer.  What is going on here? I know very little about the bailout, but it seems like it would be a good deal for the "fat cats". The Senate is trying to work a deal with oversight and make it possible for the American people to share in the profit. Listen just give every American $10,000. The $600 check I received was a joke. And the biggest joke is the Senate telling the American people that the tax payer will share in any profits. Don't hold your breath. Listen I say no bailout. NO BAILOUT! We will all be fine. Pay down the debt, and if we are going to take the lead on securing the world all these other Countrys need to help pay. If Iraq has a 79 billion surplus they need to help pay. We cant afford to pay, nor do we want to pay a trillion dollar war bill. All nations need to pay their share.
Obama can't argue how to finance his socalled plans and his 95% argument hasn't been calculated through. His 'change' has any content as long I hear him the passed months. Words, words, words,... He is normally a good communicator, but the tactics of McCain by neglecting eye-contact was a strong one, not an unfriendly one, but in this way he blocked aside Obama's strength of  playing the actor communicator game. A very bad weakness of Obama was his suggesting bi-partneringship by often saying ' John is right' ('senator McCain is right' suggests stronger...). He wanted to become closer by saying 'John' and 'Jim' to tackle McCain, but a president has to be solid and strong and there has to be a certain distance. Sometimes Obama's voice and gesticulations look strong, but in fact they are not: he is a good actor, that's all.  America needs a solid and experienced president and a solid vice-president in these difficult times, not a lefty spender government.
Furtheron I advise the democrats not to smear Sarah Palin anymore. What kind of Americans are they who do such things? Do these people forget that you have to love integrety? And which vice-president's candidate says openly that Hillary Clinton should have been a better choice? Biden huh? Weakness  is a bad character for people who want to govern this great country? McCain is a totally different leader then George W. Bush.

Ab Gerbenson, Netherlands
Brian, you can tell so much about a person by the way they handle themselves in public situations.  Last night, Sen McCain did not look at Sen Obama, no eye contact at all, not even when they ended by shaking hands - none at all.  He never called him Barrack, even though Obama called in John and looked his way many times.  This tells me alot about McCain.  He is not a team player it you are not on his team.  If he thinks he is above you, he will not give you so much as a glance.  John McCain is not a consensus builder unless he thinks you will side with him.  His actions were very disappointing.  I am sorry that you, nor any other news organization, caught this Brian.  If John McCain cannot even look at someone that disagrees with him during a debate, can we really trust him to have the best judgement with speaking with foreign powers we as a nation disagree with.
I would like to know why Brian did not see fit to go to Galvenston after Ike destroyed the biggest part of the town.  When Rita hit New Orleans he was there forever in jeans and sleeves rolled up as if to help out.  When he finally did go to Texas it was to Houston in a suit and tie.  Does he feel TX doesn't need the help nbc gave New Orleans?
I am sorry to say that every body missed Senator Mccain's mistake on Republican Guards being an Iranian organization, It's an Iraqi Organization that was disbanded in 2003. If with all his expertise on world and military affairs, he did no the name of what he was referring it, incidentally it's the Revolutionary Guards!
Hi Brian,
I have a question and a thought, is it true that John
McCain plans to take away the tax break for health insurance and also make the cost of the service in to taxable income? My comment is, if the middle class tax
payer is made to bail out these hugh mismanaged corps.
The contributing tax payers should receive stock in the company we are helping. $700 billion is a big number, to bad we as tax payer can't just print it and
have nothing behand it like some do, the real reason
we are in this mess!
Brian,

Thanks for the effort and hard work that you and your staff put into every broadcast.

I hope you all can get some much needed rest over the weekend!

Sincerely,
Trish
I enjoyed your coverage of the debate. However, I would not invite representatives of each campaign to give their opinions after the debate, like you did Friday. It is so obvious that they are merely providing "spin" rather than any analysis, that it is worthless. Try to round up some thoughtful people who are at least a little unbiased (you had one useful fellow on afterward, but I can't remember his name). If you can't find people like that, I would be happy listening to just you and Browkaw.
Good Evening Brian: Please regard this cultural tidbit re: the news reporters are asking about Obama stating, "McCain is right" or looking straight at him in the face. He is merely giving deference to McCain's age, plus this is how we were raised. I'm a Black women. If I had a misunderstanding with my parents, no looking down or looking around, gazing here & there. It's an old Black custom of deep respect. If I'm debating or talking to someone,I look at the person not ignore them. During our Civil Rights training sessions, we had to learn to look at our opponent straight in the eye but show that Martin Luther King respect. We don't need experts on this. We had to do this for many years. I hope someone tells everyone this. You don't need a college degree for every lil thing... why don't you ask Roland Martin on CNN. He will tell you this. Thank you so much for your time.
