After waking up in Texas, now I'm in Washington -- where there is a "crisis atmosphere", as they say -- a genuine one -- and where the focus now shifts to the White House from the Hill. I'll be speaking with both John McCain and Barack Obama before the day is out, and we'll have that for you on Nightly News tonight. This is a rare moment in Washington. Tomorrow we fly to Mississippi as the focus shifts yet again. Off to prepare for the broadcast. We hope you can join us.

I have been a viewer of NBC Nightly News for over 20 years, and I quit.  News is supposed to be a impartial view of what is happening, but this program is so bias toward the Democratic candidates that no one can get a view of what really is happening to all of the candiates
There are good and bad points for each political party, but your newscast does not project this.
What is this country going to do after they save the lenders and buy up all the failed mortgages when the economy gets back on track?  Give them back to the lenders who got us into the problem in the first place so they can do it all over again?
Dear Brian,

I practically broke out in hives last night, as I watched President Bush's address to the nation.  It was as though he transferred his nervousness and discomfort to me - straight through the TV screen.  He did nothing to allay my fears, that's for sure.  In fact, I'm surprised he didn't inspire an immediate run on banks.  He should have let Warren Buffett talk to the nation, instead.

Speaking of Warren Buffett, here's what T. Boone Pickens had to say about him:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/09/25/boone.pickens.energy/index.html

As for the scheduled Presidential debate on Friday - it had better happen!  I am tired of all this monkeying around!  The American people deserve so much better than these two; I can't believe that, out of a nation of millions, McCain and Obama are the best we could come up with!  If this were the day after Christmas, I'd be heading to the mall to exchange my gifts!!!!!

"Hey" to the regulars.
Brian, could you ask McCain if he can put away his smoke and mirror's, and get on with the debate's.....
Brian,

I hope you will ask John McCain how it is, in the midst of this economic crisis, that he has time to talk to you, but not to debate Barack Obama.

Much as I appreciate the work you do, seeing the two candidates debate one another is much more important to voters.  The man's priorities need some adjusting.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Well I must say you are travelling so much this week! I don't know how you do it, but you always do a great broadcast. I will look forward to you speaking with Senator McCain and Senator Obama. I agree it is a rare moment in Washington.
On another note the gas shortage continues and many stations still have no gas. It has made public transportation very popular because many people are having trouble finding parking spaces at the train stations around Atlanta.
Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!Be Well Always!
Anna-Thank you for your kind words! It was really sweet! Thank You!
Stay Safe Richard! I hope to see you on Nightly News soon!
XOXO

Regarding this current financial crisis...
My understanding is the Warren Buffet recently invested in Goldman-Sachs. A 5 billion dollar personal "bail out", if you will. I'd be very interested to know his terms. I'm sure Mr. Buffet is taking a risk but expects some sort of return his investment in this failing company. I would certainly hope the American tax payers (who are about to be committed the biggest corporate bailout in history) would have a comparable risk/reward deal. Why, after working so hard and being responsible with my own finances should I expect anything less?

I hope my representatives in Washington keep this in mind as they negotiate on my behalf.
What are they calling this big taxpayer bailout so far?   Does "Doomsday 1.0 Bailout" sound too cynical?
Brian - I hope to God you did not have that mistake in presenting Obama's talk deliberately.  Shame on you for not checking beforehand and giving McCain this one up.  This is Wrong and typical of the transparent bias from various newscasters about their personal political beliefs.  You needed to be HORRIFIED on air over this oversight.  Claire Stanard
I continue to hear about Sarah Palin not being qualified to be president.  You just pointed this out on your show as a reason for her poll numbers dropping. I am not a Republican - just merely seeking information.  What qualifications does Obama Barack have that Sarah Palin doesn't?  I don't get it?
Hi Brian,

In your interview tonight with John McCain, McCain said that the financial crisis is the worst economic disaster since the 1930s, or something to that effect.  Why wasn't he asked why just two weeks ago he was saying, as George Bush was, that the economy is "fundamentally sound"?  Anybody could see (as the polls indicated) that a majority of the American people believed that this was not the case.

We rely on you to expose the weaknesses in both candidates, if there any, by asking the tough questions.

Thank you and best regards,

William Visnich
after 40yrs I say goodbye to a old friend, NBC NEWS.
I have watched in disgust your news over the last few days. Tonight you interviewed Sen McCain with a poor backdrop , and Sen Oboma with the flag behind him. I saw you relate the suffering last week from the storms to the Repub convention. Thats it goodby. Maybe some day you will get back to reporting the news
Brian...You are the best, the most fair, and, for sure the smartest of the prime time hosts...Barack Obama should have chosen you as his running mate.
Just saw your interviews with John McCain and Barack Obama.  I heard you finish the Obama segment by wishing him a good night and safe trip and he actually seemed a bit embarassed/taken aback.  You didn't have any kind parting comments for McCain.
I live in florida and feel the effects of the  econmic crisis every day.I work in the tourism industry and see how slow it is getting. I am currently in school and trying to pay my bills. I am a homeowner that has lost so much value and our mortgage is adjusting starting in Jan.2009.I am wondering why the government wants to spend 750 billion to fix wallstreet. I would much rather see them spend that money fixing schools, bringing home the troops, and spending that money on the Americans that make this country run. Its upsetting to see everyone around me struggle to feed their families and pay the bills. This isn't a movie this is real life and REAL people are being affected. I am drowing in debt so bad that I have just filed bankrupcty. I am only 26 years old! How sad that I have had to pay my bills on credit cards, because I cant make the bills at work. Why should we pay for their mistakes? Why not make those companies pay up? To me this shows that the government doesn't care what happens to us. They have made this clear by not stopping the oil companies from raising gas prices and by spending so much money in Iraq every month. I am scared of whats going to happen to me and my family.
To cite a quote from Crimson Tide is so appropriate for this situation. We face a situation that pits old school against new school and as presented in the movie...the problem is...both are right, and both are wrong. Regardless of the direction the congress chooses, there is no clear path. The problem is so big that the only thing we can do is trust the polititians we elected to do the best they can with the information they have available. It really is the time to practice united we stand divided we fall. I'm on the fence between Obama and McCain but I agree with McCain that it's time to take care of business and both senators should be in Washington doing what we pay them to do. If we don't know the candidates by now we never will.
I have been a realtor in Ohio for a long time and have watched the real estate market very closely for the last 8 years. For the first 3 years after 9/11, the real  estate market pretty much held up the other markets.  Then as greed took over completely in big business, jobs went overseas, people started loosing their jobs, then houses, the housing market began changing.  The bail out will not work if the average person cannot buy, and many can't.  Businesses can go wherever they like, pay as little as they can to manufacter goods, but if they have put their buyers out of jobs in the process, how much profit can they make?  This hasn't been a sudden crisis.  The government can bail out every bank in the country, but if jobs are gone it is money down the drain.  Stop big business from sending goods back here that they manufacture overseas, stop giving tax breaks to companies using foreign labor, stop giving tax breaks to oil companies.  Global markets don't work if your own country is sacrificed on the alter of greed.
Good Evening, Another good broadcast this evening despite a few techincal issues which you mangaged so smoothly to get through. Your a terrific anchor and the comment of "alrighty then" was just perfect and made me laugh alittle because you handle these minor misshaps so well. Now on to the the broadcast. The report by Mr.Costello showed no deal has been set, but hopefully progress will be made. It is so monumental a pricetag of $700billion that one wonders as you asked Senator McCain where does that money come from to pay for it. It is an unprecedented crisis and both parties need to come to some sort of an agreement for a plan to help the economy. Time will tell.
The report by Mr.Potter concerning the older Americans who have seen the value of their IRA's drop dramatically showed how these people saved so well and built up their income and now to see it decrease so quickly is very disturbing. Some have returned to work in order to support themselves and many believe the economy will recover. Hopefully, things will take a turn for the better very soon.
Finally, It was nice to see Sir Paul McCartney playing to 50,000 people in Israel. Great they reivited him.
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Hopefully, we will see you in Oxford,Mississippi tomorrow evening. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Hope to see you soon on Nightly News!

Okay, where is John McCain's flag pin in his lapel?
Brian, even though you work for NBC, I thought you were professional enough to be fair to both candidates.

That is why, on tonight's broadcast, I was so surprised to see McCain blending into the weird, peach-colored backdrop you gave him, while Obama was given a presidential blue backgound, complete with an American flag!

You can be sure that viewers notice these type of things. What's the deal?
The Bush administration is to blame for the mess this country is in but I haven't heard any thing from the three major networks about placing the blame where it squarely belongs.  I oppose this bail out.   McCain has ridden in like a knight on a white horse but no one mentions his involvement in the last banking fiasco.
Who is going to come to my rescue when I loose all of my retirement money (I’m 67 and I was ready to retire.)?   It looks like I'm going to be working for many more years.  I hope my health holds up.
We need a realtor for a President if we do the bailout!
Brian,

John McCain really showed his real colors in your interview.  I almost believed his "America First"  "I'm a true patriot" thing until there very tail of the interview.  Then he started pitching his ten town meeting thing and I realized this really does have everything to do with changing the dynamics of the race than it does serving his country.  Fool me twice -- McShame on me.  The entire thing - McCain, the jump job by the Republican "leaders" and the President have all been shameful.  If people can't see through this now, they never will.
This “bail-out” is a joke. Here we are once again attempting to rescue another greedy company with hard earned, everyday people and citizens of the United States of America.

If you really want to bail somebody out start with the millions of Americans duped into fraudulent mortgages.  Apply that $700B to those at the bottom and in jeopardy of loosing their homes and let them pass it up to these poor, helpless, defenseless finance company…that will bail everybody out.
It is obscene that for the last couple of years experts have seen this crisis coming and nothing has been done to prevent it. It is disgusting to ask the taxpayers to pay for their greed and mismanagement-if the rest of us did business like this-we'd be out of business. We the tax payer are helpless as we watch the same people who we trusted that put us in this mess try to fix it. Why don't we get the politicians out of this and put in the ecomonic experts who know and understand the economy from the top universities.  It would be like me telling my husband in our business everything is fine and then one day I tell him- oh, we're broke and we owe 500,000 in credit card debt- LIKE I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING- COME ON!! These people have had the benefits of excellent educations from the finest colleges and we can't pick better leaders than this bunch of disgustingly greedy morons!!  Wasn't John McCain on the regulatory committee that de-regulated and caused this mess and now, all of the suddden, he wants to help fix what he voted on favor of -- all the de-regulation that caused this mess in the first place! Oh PLEASE-what a farce!!
Brian:

Last time I looked, Barack Obama and John McCain were still both senators that already have jobs they were elected as well as being paid to do.  The US is facing the worst economic disaster of our respective lifetimes and those two men belong in Washington hammering out an agreement that they will have to support and defend to the citizens as either the president or senator in a few weeks. Debates and campaigns can wait a few days -this is not just an economic disaster it threatens our national security as well. I can't think of a more important job than saving this country from a pending disaster.
I watched your news cast tonight and it will be the last time.  I am so tired of the comments made by people like you regarding Republican nominees.  Your comment at the end of the broadcast about John McCain was uncalled for.  You are to report the news, not give your opinion.  You should be fired or given time off for this.  Just because you have a pretty face and make lots of money does not mean we want to hear your opinions.  You are trying to get Obama elected.  Shame on you.
Brian, you are an investigative reporter -- why not investigate the 1980's S&L bailout and see how it ties in with this one considering at the time the President was Senior Bush and his two sons, mainly Neil and Jeb were the recipients of the biggest winner.  They walked away with their pockets full and daddy Bush didn't do so bad either.
I'll make this brief because I know how busy you are, especially right now.
I'm a college student in western NC, and I am shocked at how little coverage the southeast gas shortage is getting. Obviously, there are bigger stories out there, but there are some gas stations in my area that (when they have gas) are rationing customers to 5 gallons a piece, and Charlotte is even worse. My roommate and I got ahead of the game and went out for gas tonight at 11:00, and drove around town to 11 gas stations, only 2 of which had gas, both with lines. And when we did finally get in line, the station turned the lights off, apparently to discourage any more would-be customers.
I really respect the work you are doing and I hope you read this message with a certain amount of levity because it is becoming dire in this area - two area community colleges have cancelled classes, and public schools are considering the same. This is a BIG deal right now in the southeast and I know I'd appreciate at least a reference to the fact that we are in such dire gas straights. I've also heard conflicting reports as to when more gas is coming - some say weeks (indefinite), some say 2 weeks, and the NBC affiliate in Charlotte has said by Friday evening, so what is the truth? When are we going to have gas? At any price?
Mr. Williams,

I enjoyed the broadcast tonight. I have been noticing over the past week or two that your tone and demeanor have changed a bit, and I can only imagine why.

I especially liked the segment when an explanation was provided of just how things might play out. I personally believe that you cant have enough segments on explanations in times like these, so that people can become more educated on this matter and not jump to this or that conclusion. I hope I will be able to get a safe student loan within the next few years. I think I am more confident in the current situation than most people seem to be, but I am likely not going through what others are. I urge everyone to do research on their own regarding this matter and others.
Hi Brian,

Are we certain that this bailout is necessary or are fear tactics being utilized again to browbeat us into agreeing to provide unprecedented power to people that we do not know and do not trust, allowing them to virtually continue to operate above Constitutional Law ??

Is this smoke and mirrors ??  Who currently owns these mortgage back securities and do we believe that they did not know what they purchased and the risk ??  Who will we be paying the $700B to ??  To People, To Entities, To friends of the current Administration ??  Who's kidding who here ??

Why can't anyone fully explain exactly what would happen if AIG just went under ??  What have they been operating besides an Insurance Brokerage Firm ??  If we are bailing out peoples deposits and pensions that’s on thing, but why are we bailing out shareholders and entities that have already reaped an enormous profit at "We The Peoples Expense" ??

And Finally, How do we keep this completely transparent for the world to see ??  I believe that the current political regime are in this mess up to their eyebrows and I for one don't want to assist them to Cover their Asses at our expense.
Hey Brian, Why don't you as Obama what kind of help he was planning on offering the Washington..HIS USUAL PROMISES W/NO SOLUTION ?

QUOTE: "Call me if you need me" IF YOU NEED ME TO VOTE ONCE AGAIN ON TOP OF MY 136 TIMES I COULDN'T VOTE ON ANYTHING...CALL ME IF YOU NEED ME TO SAY....READY FOR THIS VOTE....PRESENT!

ALSO....Ask Obama why he turned down McCain with his invites to have DEBATES at town halls. Obama ran w/his tail between his legs because it would deter his ATTORNEY mind set of his BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA.. w/no solution~! He is starting to sound like his preacher out there that DAMMMMMMED AMERICA!

But we know what you are going to do...fluff fluff the Obama so your little children listeners can listen and get brain washed. These are the kind of people that work for NBC. Only NBC ran that sick evil ad about McCain's health. Fox & CNN turned it down!
Our leaders can't define what constitutes "winning the war in Iraq". Our leaders can't seem to figure out where to fight the war on terrorism, much less define it!

So... what makes one think that our leaders can win the war on "corporate greed", much less reach a consensus on defining it, then fix it!

Here's a starter hint.. require our leaders to be responsible to the people, instead of the lobbyists. We know that money is the root of all evil, and that power corrupts..  We also know that "service above self" is the motto of strong leadership!
DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS and BARNEY FRANK have been on this watch. They are responsible for keeping eye on this. They did not do their job so they are once again playing the blame game.
No bail out for this tax payer. So let the Democrats who screwed up, wall street, financial instiutions and executives who ran with the money EMPTY there WALLETS for once and pay up...

No Bail out- Let the Democrats, Barney Frank who was to watch all this and did NOT,wall street, Financial exec who ran with the money, empty their pockets to get us out of this mess.
This all happend on the DEMOCRATS WATCH now they play the usual blame game of uglyness towards the republicans.
As usual Obama is not doing anything he is present though, hum ahh humm...
Brian,
I have been watching NBC news for over 30 years and I can’t understand what has happened to your news network! They have lost the ability to be fair and impartial as to which political candidate they support. You can see it in everything NBC broadcasts. I feel like I am watching a paid commercial for the Democratic Party. NBC and CNBC both sway their reporting to enhance the democratics and degrade the republicans. The amount of negative press McCain has received from your organization has made me change networks and watch a network news station that I can trust for reporting news in a fair and impartial way. With such a great heritage of past news anchors I would be ashamed of what your network has become – partial & unfair!

I just saw an email that someone figured out that if we give the 200 million taxpayers over 18 in the USA and equal share of the 85 Billion that we gave to back up AIG that each taxpayer would get $425,000....if that is taxed at 30%, everyone would pay back $127,500 in taxes sending 25.5 billion back to the government....we all would still have $297.5K in their pocket.  Mortgages for regular Americans could be paid off and solve the housing crisis, and stimulate the economy by stimulating the economy.  Could you ask McCain and Obama why we don't do this?  Seems to me that it would solve most regular Americans problems and save us all from this crisis....and it is OUR money anyhow.....
With all due respect to the news anchors, I too, want the best candidate to win the election. But, just how does the news justify grilling a vice presidential candidate more about foreign policy and experience than they do a junior Senator whose major claim to fame consists of dodging the vote on over 100 major legislative issues?

Let's focus on the leaders, guys!!
Brian,
I'm reading the comments with a chuckle, as you've been accused of bias against both McCain and Obama. That must mean you're doing something right. ;-)
I'm going to assume the candidates chose their own backdrops, or it was a matter of their respective locations at the time of the interviews.

On to more serious matters: I was glad to hear you ask where this money was going to come from. It's certainly on the top of my mind.

I also think there could have been a little more coverage of the issues facing TX. Even though you were physically there, it didn't seem like much more coverage than recent newscasts. I understand the time limitations in a (less than) 30 minute broadcast, as there are several major stories to cover right now. If only you had an hour! Maybe a news special is needed to give these issues the time they deserve.

I hope you get to spend a calm weekend at home after all your travels.

BRIAN,

Has anyone noticed that underneath all of the media coverage about the "BAILOUT", that the National Budget has not been approved and that they are planning to approve a "continuing resolution" tomorrow that will allow government spending to continue at its present rate without a budget. Has anyone considered that maybe all of the politics and posturing smokescreens the fact that both parties are willing to leave Washington and go back to their voting base to play politics and ask for votes without a NATIONAL BUDGET????

I am disappointed in NBC for desserting its tradition of detailed investigative reporting. Why haven't we heard an in depth anaylsis of how we "got here"?
At some point the economic models that drive our economy have become corrupted. And as the German Central Bank director implyed " our greed has destroyed or industry". I am far more worried about "America" failing that her banks.
Last time I looked, Barack Obama and John McCain were still both senators that already have jobs they were elected as well as being paid to do. they should  get us taken care of then they debate all they like!
The most under-reported story is the one that explains who has been calling for reforms and regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  Who saw this coming and who resisted regulatory changes.  Please tell us what S.190 was and what happened to it.  Here is your inconvenient truth:  George Bush and Alan Greenspan foresaw this years ago and John McCain and others tried to avert this situation.  Who lined their pockets with Fannie and Freddie money and fought for the status quo...Senate banking committee Democrats and Barney Frank.
Mr. Williams: Why is no one asking the question about stopping the billions of dollars that leave our country every day for foreign aid and the Iraq war. Maybe we should put America first for a change, get our own house in order, and then re-evaluate the foreign aid needs.
Mr. Williams: You, personally, and NBC Nightly News are almost the only credible, reasonable and reliable voices crying in a wilderness of inane, biased, and often ill-informed and illogical reporting and opinions that are cluttering the airwaves these days. I, and most of my well-educated, rational and reasonably intelligent friends, admire you so much and rely on you to help us make sense of the seemingly irrational events occurring in our country lately.
Many of us depend primarily on you and NBC Nightly News to help us understand and navigate the intricacies of the financial and political morass in which we and our country now, inexplicably, find ourselves.
Please, please strongly consider extending Nightly News to an hour-long broadcast so that you can give us more than brief 1-minute reports to help us understand and respond to these challenges we all face. You have been given an important mission. Please don’t let us down. The future of our country and our children hang in the balance.
Thank you for all you are doing for America.

Wow, nice blog.  I posted an entry using your rules exactly 24 hours ago and it never appeared.  Is this censorship of some kind or just ineptitude on the part of the web guys????
I could go back to keeping my money under the pillow and getting a money order to pay bills, or even do it online. We don't need the banks, let them all rot with their overpayed CEO's. The banks are the ones who were lending people money who really couldn't afford to pay it back, the people who were foreclosed on should be bailed out, not the banks. Here's another question; Why don't we take away all of the Politician's pensions, and healthcare benefits to bail out the economy, it seems it's okay for large companies to reduce or remove their employee's pensions and Healthcare when things don't go right. We the taxpayers are paying for it; I vote on removing their benefits effective 12/31/08.
Brian: You're my favorite anchor since...Dan Rather. Seriously. You're not yet avuncular like Dan's predecessor, but you bring a certain calmness in the midst of extraordinary and rather stressful events: Wall Street, Main Street, Ike (remember him?), Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan for starters. And oh yes, the Presidential election.  Your team's efforts, combined with the work of the fine folks on the Today show, are most often first rate, and keep me watching NBC.  Perhaps I've been listening a little too much to conservative talk show hosts on KTRH in Houston, but maybe NBC can give the potential voters just a little more perspective on Ayers, Wright, and Rezko...you know, a one, two, three (with visuals) for maximum educational value. (I'll pass for now on comments regarding a certain Saturday Night Live segment, of which you are not responsible.)
