A day of breaking news

Posted: Saturday, September 20, 2008 4:00 PM by Ian Sager

By Amy Robach, NBC News Anchor

When I walked into work this morning, it was not your typical Saturday. Breaking news was on every television screen, and for the first time in days, the economy was not the only big story.

A terrorist attack at the Marriott in Islamabad, Pakistan dominated the day's coverage, and with the growing number of fatalities, it may turn out to be the biggest hotel attack in Pakistan’s history.

Our Ann Curry was in the country to interview Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari — his first interview with an American news organization. She left the scene at the Marriott to sit down with President Zardari, and tonight, she will bring us a first hand account of the tragedy she witnessed, as well as the Zardari’s response to this attack.

Back at home, it's been a hectic news day.  From details of the White House's bid for a $700 billion bailout package, to a deadly plane crash that killed 4 and left 2 well known musicians in critical condition, we have it all covered for you. I hope you’ll join us for the Saturday edition of Nightly News.

Good Evening Amy, Nice to see you this evening for the broadcast. First of all how very tragic the terrorist attack at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad,Pakistan. I listened to the report Ann Curry did this morning from Islamabad on MSNBC and what she was describing was horrific. I viewed some of the pictures from MSNBC website and the hotel appeared totally destroyed. The whole scene seemed just unbelievable as to how this explosion could have devastated the entire hotel. I feel badly for all the innocent victims of this tragedy. I wish terror groups didn't exist because it would make this world much safer. It will be interesting to hear President Zadari's response to this attack.
On another note the $700 billion bailout package from the White House is a staggering amount of money. Looking forward to the broadcast Amy. Stay Safe Ann! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Nice to see you on Nightly News Friday!
XOXO

Dear Amy,

It will be good to see you on the broadcast tonight, since Today was pre-empted by Ryder Cup coverage.

The new Pakistani president certainly has his hands full, what with continued terrorist attacks, and U.S. forces making cross-border strikes.  I hope Ann discusses the latter with him, because I haven't seen much on that, other than in the print media.

To Anna:  Below is a link which explains the whole Carvel ice cream reference from the other day.

To All:  Here is a link to a really beautiful story about a Vietnam War veteran who is doing something wonderful for our service men and women.

Also, I found something of interest on Fannie Mae.

Happy Saturday to all.

Many X's and O's to the regular posters:  Lisa, Jackie, Stephanie, Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.
Hello Dear Amy,
They spread fear now in the same way they were spreading fear about Saddam's WMD. If tax payers do not bail out the financeirs, they are telling us, the economy will collapse. The basic issue is that the economy has been collapsing whether there is bailout or not. So, the best action is not to spend public funds for those dishonest CEOs. The Presdient is not paying the funds out of his property. He is doing good for the rich and oil companies by using the public wealth. This will help his legacy as the defender of the wealthy doods. He has destroyed our economy because of the wars any way. His foreign policy is BS and has also destroyed Iraq, and Pakistan is heading in the same way. All these actions will not help us anyway. Take care and Best Regards.
ITS NOW 7:25 P.M. AND I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE NIGHTLY NEWS TO BEGIN.  IS GOLF MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE ECONOMY, A TERRIORIST ATTACK, AND A PLANE CRASH?  I SURE HOPE NBC IS PATRIOTIC ENOUGH TO AIR THE NATIONAL NEWS AFTER THE SIMPLE OF MIND HAVE BEEN SATISFIED WITH A FEW HOLES OF INCONCLUSIVE GOLF.  THANK YOU FROM A LOYAL VIEWER SINCE DAVID AND CHET.
Good Evening Amy, I cannot believe it!! Richard was in Atlanta!! YEAH!! But I didn't know about it! SIGH!! BIG SIGH!! Anyway, Richard's report on the broadcast about Pakistan showed that Pakistan does not like President Zadari. As Richard stated President Zadari will speak to the Pakistani Parlaiment and then to the United Nations next week. It is going to be a challenge for President Zadari to deal with the terrorism in his country because he might not have a handle on it. As Richard stated the next President will be faced with a huge challenge in Foreign Policy dealing with Pakistan. It is so very tragic what happened at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad,Pakistan because so many innocent lives were lost. I hope that someday there will be no more terrorist groups and the world will be alittle safer. I would comment on more reports, but I am so very excited Richard is in Atlanta that I am just mentioning his report. WELCOME BACK TO ATLANTA RICHARD!!!! GREAT TO HAVE YOU VISIT AGAIN! WOO! HOO!
I will comment on more stories later Amy! Peace to YOU and to ALL!!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!

Brian,
I'm part of the population in Columbus,Ohio who did not get their electricity back until Saturday night.
What I missed the most? While refrigeration and lights for evening activites were high on the list, a close third was the Nightly News and your blog. Thanks to you and your Nightly News Team for their dedication, hard work and excellent reporting.

My thoughts and prayers continue for those in Texas who lost everything to IKE!

Good Morning Amy, I always enjoy seeing Richard on the broadcast! Especially since he was reporting from Atlanta! Great to see you Richard!! Richard's report stated that the timing of the attack clearly was trying to destabilize the government of Pakistan which is what happened with Benazir Bhutto when she returned to Pakistan and was assasinated. As Richard stated he wanted to present himself to the world and gain some momentum, but the militants do not want that to occur. There is anti-American sentiment because of airstrikes across the border region of Pakistan which resulted in civilian casualties. Richard saying this is a  post-Musharraf era and the now civilian government in Pakistan might not be able to handle the problems of the militant terror groups. Another great report Richard! Great to see you in Atlanta! Welcome Back! Stay Safe and Well Always Richard!
the report by Ann Curry concerning the terror attack on the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad,Pakistan showed some horrific scenes of destruction. It was interesting to hear from President Zadari regarding the attack and how he and the world will fight them. The images of the hotel just looked completely destroyed and so many innocent lives were lost. It is very sad two Americans were killed. And hearing a thirty foot crater was caused by truck blast is terrible. Such a popular hotel with people of the area and those around the world it is extremely tragic. Stay Safe and Well Ann!
Great reporting! Thank you for the broadcast Amy!
Hopefully, someday there will be peace in this world with no more terror groups.
Peace to You and to All!
