By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

I'm re-familiarizing myself with my office and surroundings (and e-mails and invitations and outstanding issues) after an absence of about five weeks -- and as we all know by now, more than 40-thousand miles of travel. To those of you who watched our "Stand Up 2 Cancer" special from L.A. Friday night: thank you. It was a wonderful, emotional evening. I've never had reason to be so thoroughly impressed with so many celebrities before -- nor do I hang with those types often -- but what an incredible bunch. On behalf of everyone who had anything to do with it, thanks. We're back at it, covering politics and weather and finance and more. We hope you can join us tonight from...New York!

Since McCain is leading in the polls, it would be nice to hear that on the NBC Nightly News.  You only seem to report on the polls when Obama is in the lead.  Here is an opportunity to show that the media is not bias.
Hi Brian -

Welcome Home - I watched gavel-to-gavel, but the hands down best act at the conventions was the final scene with Andrea drowning in a sea of balloons, and you and Tom shouting encouragement at her.

That's entertainment.

Looking forward to your election coverage  - it's going to be an interesting campaign on all sides.

Joan
Brian,

Help!  It has been about 4 days since it became clear that Sarah Palin lied to the American people about the bridge to nowhere.  Not only did she support it before she backed away from it but Alaska kept the $223 million allocated by Congress for the bridge.  If you say "no thanks"  aren't you supposed to give the money back.

How is it possible that the news media is ignoring this?  Is this not how we got into Iraq in the first place.

Also, except for one paragraph in Time Magazine, no one is talking about the fact that Sarah Palin attempted to BAN BOOKS as Mayor of Wasilla.  Why is no one talking about this?

Help!
Yay, first comment!  Brian, it was a pleasure watching you cover news from Beijing, the political conventions, hurricane G, and Hollyweird. Go you globetrotter, go!
Not only was your nightly news biased but your poll results were wrong - the results of the ABC were not OBAMA 1 ahead but McCain 2 points ahead. Please try to report the truth!!!
Welcome back!  Now to the dirty work.  Why were Christ Matthews and Keith Olbermann removed as anchors from the election coverage?  I espeially enjoy the responsible and real-time commentary rpovided by these gentlemen.  Is there a good reason other than stepping on toes (Brokaw, Todd, Williams)?  Reporting from a political position that NBC does not sanction (censorhsip)?  Damn Mad in Denver
I am crying my eyes out for those poor college kids in San Diego who are having to work (heaven forbid) or borrow student loans (oh, no!) to pay their $35,000 tuition....
Hi Brian
Just have to say that anytime I see one of these stories about college kids having to work, I say GOOD!
I worked 3 jobs while in college and so did many of my friends. We couldn't afford to go to Ivy League schools, so we went to state schools (without going into debt).
By the way, our grades were good and we all have good jobs today.
Getting an education can be done if students realize they should contribute to funding it and are serious about studying.
How many of the whiners have their pictures posted on the Internet wearing designer clothes, drinking every night and making plans to jet set during breaks?
Have you received word when Palin will be on the Nightly News?

Congrats to Charlie but I think he will softball the questions while you won't.

It will be interesting to see how the Palin-McCain ticket holds up to your question.
WELCOME HOME, Brian!

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooh PLEASE Brian don't show any more footage of Tom Brady getting hurt.  It's like watching a knife stab your heart again and again... oh the pain!  The devastation!  I so hope that he can recover enough to live a grand life.  However, I also remember Patriots Nation moaning the same song after Bledsoe got hurt and look who showed up?  We now have to stand behind Matt Cassell and let him know we support him, too.  I still want Brady back, but he's got to take care of himself.  THIS IS STILL GOING TO BE A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG SEASON!

Ok, to the serious matters of the day... the latest Afghani debacle is so sad.  If this is all because of bad intel by those who are looking for a payback, then why are we relying on such intel?

I'm sure Bob Woodward's latest book is fascinating.  If I could ask one question of the president, it would be this: if your administration is as smart, capable, and blameless as you say it is, then why are all these people writing books about things being so bad - even those from within your administration?  There have been politicians and insiders and reporters and every day joes writing books about how terrible its been; are you trying to tell me that its a blanket smear campaign?   While Bill Clinton had his rash of negative books written about him, I do recall many positive books written.  I do not, however, remember many positive books, if any, being written yet about you, Mr. President.  How come?

I can't believe it - 57 days till the election?  Can it really be?

Happy Monday everyone!
OK DO NOT KNOW HOW TO EMAIL YOU PEOPLE BUT, HOW DOES ONE HELP THAT GIRL IN CA WITH HER STUDENT LOANS???  I am also a BC survivor (so far) and do appreciate all you have done for that.

Sorry about the shouting.  Can't much but pennies add up to dollars!
FYI..... Wilmington, NC is NOT in the Outer Banks of North Carolina..... The Outer Banks is a stretch of islands that juts out into the ocean.  They are 1 of 2 geographical location on the East Coast that comes closest to the Gulf Stream - the other location - Palm Beach, FL.Wilmington, NC is just North of South Carolina
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Great to see you this evening from New York. Finally! Very nice broadcast of the Stand Up 2 Cancer special on Friday. Great to know that $100million has been raised so far! Now on to the broadacast. The report concerning the civilian deaths in Afghanistan was truly horrible to see. The cell phone video taken really showed the number killed and all the suffering of the innocent civilians. The investigation into the strike will commence, yet in the "fog" of war many times information can get confusing. It is not worth the loss of innocent civilian lives and it is terribly tragic innocent people are caught in the middle of battles. Hopefully, the investigation will shed the truth.
On a political note the campaigns are getting off and running. Hearing you state there are 57days to go until election day makes me exhausted just thinking about the sprint to the finish and the long election night in November. Certainly alot of excitement  on both tickets with record crowds showing up to show  support for the candidates. Time will tell as the debates come around and then election day.
On an weather note the path of Hurricane Ike seems to be heading towards Texas although it could change paths as it comes into the Gulf of Mexico. I hope it doesn't cause too much damage to any State along the Gulf.
Finally, the report by Mr.Faw about the testing out of the digital television reception. When the time comes I hope everyone is able to have reception within their area. I know here in Atlanta on the NBC affiliate they advertise the change coming to the reception all the time. So hopefully everyone will have a way to view television. I will always be able to view your broadcast Mr.Williams! Since I already have satellite reception! Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Great to see you back in New York! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! I hope to see one of your reports soon!
XOXO
Need to look at Geography.  Wilmington NC is not on the outer banks.
I just want to know why NBC/MSNBC did not ask any question to Obama about his relationship with Rev. Wright for 20 years. Obama only talks about what people want to hear and what will make people vote for him. Another words he does not have any real plan for us. I would like NBC/MSNBC to be fair by asking questions to both Barak Obama and Sarah Palin. One more question how does Obama explain his "change" by picking Biden as his running mate?
Brian, you are an outstanding youngman doing an excellent job, no matter what the undertaking is. Standup 2 Cancer affected me deeply and I had to deal with things I have put off for such a long time and all just by watching Friday night.  I salute you and all who worked with you are giving us something to hang onto.

A Great Grandma in Oklahoma
Welcome back to reality?  Oh, well, at least welcome back.  Since you always do a responsible job, please explain as a managing editor for NBC what your reaction is to the NBC decision to remove two commentators from Election Day coverage.  I refer, obviously, to Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann.  I take the position that coverage should include commentary.  NBC has plenty of people on the right side of the political spectrum: Brokaw, Buchannan.  You have centrists:  Gregory, Abrams.  Who represents the progressive side of the equation?  As you can read, I can’t satisfy myself with just one question.  So, I hope you can take time to address both. Thank you.
Brian,

You are an absolutely magnificant Anchor and newsman.  I had to watch an online version of Stand up to Cancer (it was on opposite Kieth!) but very emotional indeed.

You are an inspiring individual, and I am so thankful I get to watch you every night.
here we go again!!!   the news media capitulating to the republicans again!! if the media had done there constitutional duty in 2000 and 2004 this country may not have been at war in Iraq or at least the American people would not feel  that we were duped in to it ...woe unto me who  believes that the free press is there to inform the people.  every .. every time the republicans cry liberal media the news media run and hides under there desk...think about it...if the media has always been liberal as the Republicans claim then this country has not done so bad for the last 200 or so yrs!!! what ever happen to "the peoples right to know"

Hi Brian,
It must certainly feel great to be home, no longer living out of a suitcase.
I just wanted to let you know that while I had missed your day on Sesame Street, I did find some segments of it on Youtube. It really must have been a thrill to meet Elmo and Oscar....I truly mean that. You need to have fun days like that every now and then.

I'm sure you've heard that Canada is having a federal election. (It was annouced today Sept.8th) ....very soon on October 14th,2008 to elect a new leader. Canadians are in to very short campaigns.Quite amazing really to compare the two countries.
Take it easy Brian and enjoy being home again.
CANCER.........I NOW WHAT IT CAN DO TO A FAMILY, WIFES BREAST CANCER, SISTERS BREAST CANCER, FATHERS CANCER AND MY MOTHERS ALZIMER...AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF OTHER ILLS THAT CAN EFFECT A FAMILY. HEALTH CARE CAN TAKE YOU DOWN THE ROAD TO POVERTY, IN A SHORT TIME. I WANT A PRESIDENT THAT WILL MAKE A REAL CHANGE IN HEALTH CARE COST. AND THE ONLY ONE I SEE IS OBAMA!

LETS MAKE THIS A FIGHT FOR THE PRESIDENCY, BETWEEN OBAMA AND MC CAIN, NOT SOME PERSONAL SHOW AND DANCE. SEEMS LIKE PALIN IN RUNNING AGAINST OBAMA INSTEAD OF MC CAIN. LETS GET BACK TO THE ISSUSES. I THINK PALIN IS BEING USED BY MC CAIN FOR HIS OWN GAIN. AND IF HE GETS TO THE WHITE HOUSE, HE'LL PUT HER IN THE CORNER TO STAY.

LETS START HAVING EVERYONE GIVE ANSWERS TO THE REAL ISSUES AND DEAL WITH THE REAL PROBLEMS THAT EFFECT FAMILYS IN THE EVERYDAY WORLD. ITS TIME FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO TAKE CHARGE. I ADMIRE GOV. PALIN, BUT TO ME SHE IS A SHEEP IN WOLFS CLOTHING.

LETS QUESTION HER ON THE ISSUSES, AND KEEP HER FROM BEING A STAGE FRONT FOR SEN. MACAIN. THE ISSUES BEING HEALTH, EDUCATION AND WELLFARE. BRIAN MY WIFE AND I WATCH YOU ALL THE TIME, MSNBC IS A STAPLE IN OUR HOUSEHOLD, AND WE ARE JUST A FAMILY WHO MUST SPECK OUT.        WATCHING IN TENNESSEE
Why no mention of the changes NBC made to Mr. Matthews and Mr. Olbermann's positions last night?  That's pretty big news given the current political season.

Enjoyed the clip on Afghanistan but why only show the cell phone video when there are other credible sources with what may be disputing evidence?

To Stephanie's question above part of the answer is that books like this sell during election years.
Bear with me for being a bit picky about last night's coverage after Nightly's first-rate coverage of Gustav's hitting Louisiana last week, but I wish you'd aired more than just a headline about the suffering and devastation still prevailing in Houma and other areas of Louisiana.

As my NOLA-area friend has put it in an e-mail,

"Gustav and Katrina are forever intertwined. People were just starting to put K in perspective and at that moment we were on the run. The Gustav situation is not being covered. FEMA, again did not get the water, ice, tarps and MRE's to the disaster site. The supplies are starting to arrive TODAY. I have open sewerage on my lawn, spoiled food on the street, traffic congestion at the food stamp sites and on and on - same story. Those 10% insurance deductibles will not cover the type of damage that most received (shingles, fence, food, lodging). Nothing, absolutely nothing was learned from Katrina. All that money wasted on crony contractors instead of barrier island, wetlands and raised houses.  Also, I opened my paper this morning and discovered my neighbors were killed in MS during the evacuation. MS was just awful (blocked exits, guards with guns, accidents, no gas). Something needs to be done - I59 is a federal highway."

I just thought I'd pass the above on because amidst all of the Palindrone (which I call the incessant talk about and coverage of Sarah Palin) Gustav's aftermath is still major news because it shows that not too much has been learned in Katrina's wake.
I, like millions of others, have stopped watching the network news, and especially MSNBC due to the extreme bias in the news for Obama. The 14,000 Obama press agents out there have asked more questions about Sarah Palin, 90% negative, in 1 week than you did for 19 months from Obama. This will backfire, big time.  2008 is the year Journalism died.
I would like to have Palin and McCain called out on the reverse sexism that is going on. If she were a Man in the VP spot they would have had already called her out. BUT no one has. Why are people afraid to say she is a lair and say it is all absurd!??
Why has Palin been given a free pass on her connections to BIG OIL?It seems the press is more interested in the bridge nowhere than the obvious. She needs to be exposed for what she realy is.America can not afford $5.00 a gallon gas prices that she and Mccain will bring.BIG OIL is running America and dont plan to let go.Palin is just another Republician the has put BIG OIL profits before the needs of people.BIG OIL has RECORD PROFITS.The America People has record job loss, poverty and record banks closing.Palin = BIG OIL PROFITS. Exxon Mobil laughing all the way to the bank.
It was so unfair of the feds to take control of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac this close to an election. Now what are the democrats going to do for a slush fund? I smell a Rove Plot BAHAHA
Brian,

I used to watch CNN until I figured out their intent to coronate the McCain/Palin ticket without much scrutiny.  Chuck Todd's lack of objectivity aside, your broadcasts seem to be more balanced than the other networks.

However, I am concerned that the networks are giving Gov. Palin a free ride.  FTA and FHWA both require accountability for use of highway and transportation funding.  I can assure you there are federal audits over amounts exponentially smaller than the funds that Alaska accepted, but didn't use for the purpose intended.  I don't know any tranit agency or organization that could escape dire consequences for such actions.  Why is Alaska, and more importantly, Gov. Palin given a pass on this very serious allegation?

Being a Pit-Bull who wears lipstick is one thing. . . Being full of Bull is quite another.
Hi Brian,
Please, PLEASE continue reporting the necessary political news as you & NBC have always done!Threre are lots of us "political junkies" who watch & enjoy your coverage. Hang in there & ignore all who throw negative words & vibes at you!
I am in unison with the person above.....  I am so depressed that ya'll took Olbermann and Matthews off as Anchors.  I loved those guys.  They are why i fell in love with the political coverage on MSNBC. They added life, these fiery and higly intelligent guys kept it lively and kept it fun.....

Don't get me wrong....  I absolutley watch you and Tom, yall trump everyone else, but Kieth and Chris ROCKED!!  And I honestly think that there is no one who loves America and the Political process more than Chris.

I think Kieth spoke the truth about the 911 "tribute"  as an American I was offended at the Republican's usage of it as an ultimate "Red Phone Ad."  Please bring back Kieth and Chris.  They set MSNBC apart from all the other hum drum coverage of political news.
I understand you're interviewing Palin soon--we are depending on you to ask the tough questions. Women NEED to know her stand on birth control. No, not abortion, birth control, as in the pill, iuds, condoms, etc. and easy access and information! Prevention is better than anything else, and NO, abstinence education is not enough, alone.
What about Jews for Jesus visiting her church?
What about "fudging" the facts to make her sound better, like "selling the plane on ebay" which was NOT the way the plane was sold, etc.?
We'll have to depend on you, though past experience tells me you will wimp out.
Don't be afraid of being tough on this "barracuda" because she can take it, and if she can't, she should go home.

Mr Marshall:  I'm sure you're aware of Bob Woodwards new book, in which he details the growing demands from the leadership of the US army to draw down from Iraq in 2006, given the failure of military operations there, and their concern that the US army was being wrecked by the strain of fighting the war.

During this time, of course, the Bush administration insisted all was going well, and accused those who opposed the war - among them, Barack Obama, of lacking patriotism, or even implicit treason.

During the same period, the Pentagon deployed "force multipliers" to the network news - including your program.  These were "independent experts" whose positive spin on the war was monitored and coordinated by the Pentagon.

The NBC nightly news, in other words, was a platform for a propoganda campaign.

There are still grounds for grave concern in Iraq, of course.  Maliki and his Iranian sponsors appear to have set an end date for US operations there - a denoument Bush once derided as "cut and run".

I hope we'll see a little more interest in reality on the nightly news in the future.
Dear Mr. Williams,
I am from Wilmington, NC, USA (center of the world for the analog to digital switch) and I appreciate your correction that Wilmington is not located in the Outer Banks.  We love you newscast and watch nightly.
Keep up the great work.

The Wilsons
What about "fudging" the facts to make her sound better, like "selling the plane on ebay" which was NOT the way the plane was sold, etc.?

God Bless you Brian!
As an independent I find that your pre-election coverage seemed quite biased tonight -- pro O.  Fed up with both parties... was going to vote for O, but, since Sara... I am inspired, excited, and delighted with the election process once again... and am considering changing my vote.  Please report her 80% approval rating ---- I'd say, that is quite an accomplishment in itself.
I do not beleive the pols as Chuck Todd explained. I know how polls are generated. It goes something like this: "Ask the people who you think will give the 'right' answers. Make it seem close to what you want people to believe." The polls lie. Obama Is at least 75% higher than McCain. Mrs. Palin will prove to be a ball and chain for McCain!
YooHoo! Folks! Please get a grip! We are suposed to voting for a PARTY, not a person! Vote for the party which will do the most for the country, and for you, personally! The country needs help, in so many ways. Not war! God Bless America, and God help our TV Anchor men!
I just viewed your VERY biased report regarding the truths of Sarah Palin...

Come on you guys!  The jet WAS sold.  She did put it on EBAY but SHE never said that it was SOLD on EBAY.  The fact is, she got rid of it!

Come on you guys!  Fortunately, the chef was retained at an even more valuable position.

Come on you guys!  Alaska is not losing $$$, in part, thanks to Sarah Palin...why didn't you report that?

It's clear to see that NBC's "unbiased" reporting JUST ISN'T.

Pat, some of us vote independently, and based upon the person and their positions, not the Party.  i switch back and forth in my local politics.
BRIAN,
LAST WEEK AS I WAS WATCHING THE NEWS FROM NEW ORLEANS THE CAMERA BEGAN TO FOCUS ON A PERSON ON A LADDER ATTACHED TO A LEVEE.  AS IT GOT CLOSER I COULD SEE THE PERSON WAS YOU.  BRIAN, I HAVE TO SAY THAT WAS TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR,  THE MOST DANGEROUS LOOKING PLACE FOR ANYONE TO BE.  VERY UNPROFESSIONAL, VERY BAD EXAMPLE TO YOUNG PEOPLE. YOU MUST BE TRYING TO WIN BEST DRAMA FOR DAYTIME TELEVISION. I WAS NOT IMPRESSED AND CHANGED THE CHANNEL.
Brian: Thanks for helping out to raise awareness of the fight against cancer. $100 million is a lot of money to raise for cancer. It's a great effort...but....not something I would support monetarily! Why?

Here's what I wrote yesterday.

http://www.articlesbase.com/cancer-articles/stand-up-for-cancer-554894.html

According to Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News on September 8th 2008, Stand Up To Cancer raised over $100 million over this past weekend. This money will not decrease the estimated yearly 550,000 people diagnosed with cancer. Treatments for cancer and research money for finding the cure for cancer are futile efforts by a medical industry that uses approaches with aggressive words like: 'We must win the fight against Cancer,' and the 'War on Cancer'. That approach needs to be turned around. It needs to change.

I , David Snieckus, declares a, ‘Peace with Cancer’.  Instead of bombarding the tumors with radiation or chemotherapy or invading human bodies with a knife, let’s begin a more gentle and peaceful way. Let’s start by being grateful for our cancer as a messenger for us to address its cause and change our lifestyles!

The medical treatments that people decide upon, along with their doctors, think that there is something outside of ourselves that can cure cancer. There is no cure for cancer except our immune systems. We can prevent and actually reverse cancer without doctors and their drugs by strengthening our immune systems! This begins right in our own kitchens with a change in our diets!” TIME Magazine, Oct. 15th 2007 pointed out that Breast Cancer is spreading around the world because of the American diet. I know that to be: too much white sugar; too much white flour; too much dairy products, like milk, cream, butter, cottage cheese, yogurt, especially ice cream;too much processed foods;too much french fries; too much salad dressings;too much chips; too much honey; too much chocolate; too much of any type sweeteners; too much spices; too much alcohol; too many birth control pills; too many drugs (over the counter or under);too many medications; too many chemically grown, processed and treated foods; too much meat;too many eggs; too much chicken; too much baked cakes, cookies and bread.

When President Nixon gave his State of the Union address in January 1971, pronouncing a ‘War on Cancer’, I was just returning from Vietnam. Since then, trillions of dollars have been spent on the ‘War on Cancer’. But all the research, all the drugs, all the surgeries for cancer and all the millions raised have not resulted in long term health. These approaches may have prolonged the lives of some, but most all cancer survivors, experience recurrences. Why? They did not change their eating habits and their lifestyles. In declaring a “Peace with Cancer”,  I want everyone to know that cancer is not necessarily the deadly disease we have accepted in our collective consciousness. Of course, we have to be serious about it, but cancer needs to be looked at differently. Cancer treatments need a new approach. Instead of a war on cancer, with drugs, radiation and surgery, we can declare peace with cancer and see it for what it really is: A wake-up call to take better care of our bodies and feed ourselves properly! A messenger for healthy changes!

I have researched chronic illness, especially cancer, since 1977, see www.davidsnieckus.com. With my knowledge and wisdom, (Macrobiotic Counselor and Chef for over 30 years) I have taken on the great challenge of helping to shape the new era of health and wellness in America.

Let me repeat, "call off the doctors, call off the drugs, call off the chemicals, call off the surgeries. In fact call off the fundraising! The war is over. See Cancer as our friend. Cancer is a healthy reaction to an unhealthy lifestyle. There is no medical cure for cancer. Cancer is the cure. See cancer as your ally and peacefully change your diet and lifestyle."

David Snieckus is currently writing the book, THE CURE: Change YOUR Eating! For more information and a FREE REPORT, David can be reached at617-964-2951. Along with Margaret and their daughter, Abigail, they are co-writing, Whooo Cooks For You.

Normal 0 WHOOO COOKS FOR YOU? is a family book on plant-based whole foods consciousness and cooking. The first third is a children's book, the second third provides recipes for both children and adults, the last third provides explanations for adults of the benefits of a plant-based whole foods diet from three perspectives: nutritional, environmental, and world consciousness.
