Ringing in

When young volunteers in the U.S. Navy Seal training program, known by the acronym BUDS, decide that due to fatigue or injury or family crisis they must leave the program, they must "ring out" by ringing a bell in the courtyard. Tonight, John McCain does the opposite -- as I struggle here to employ a Navy theme -- by ringing in, (didn't another Navy man once say "reporting for duty"?) and making his speech to the party faithful and the American faithful. When we all leave here, there will be 61 days remaining until Americans get to decide on the next President. The story here -- as it is across much of the country -- is Governor Palin's speech from last night.

We're all gathered inside the arena, while outside there are protesters trying to make their way into downtown St. Paul. From here tonight, we fly to Los Angeles (after our prime time coverage of the McCain speech) where Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson and I will host tomorrow evening's live special, Stand Up To Cancer. Please keep asking the critical and necessary questions to and concerning all those running for public office in the 2008 US elections. Our voters need to make informed decisions that will affect us all for many years to come. I almost get a feeling from reading your blog this week that there is at play a strategy to scare the news media off from doing their job. Do not succumb. The lack of substance within a number of last night's speeches and personal attacks of Senator Obama is an embarrassment to all US Americans. Viewers from other nations will not be impressed. We can do better than this. Once again, do not stop asking the critical and necessary questions of all those running for public office in the 2008 US elections. Thank you for your efforts in raising money for cancer research.

Mr. Williams,

Does it get any easier for you after the Stand Up To Cancer Special? I am definitely tuning in for that by the way. I'm hoping that information will be provided during the special about cancer and other relevant amounts of information. When you fly for work, do you personally get to use your frequent flier miles to go on vacation?

I imagine you will be returning back to "normal" within the next week or two, barring some international ground breaking story, though I hope non will appear, after the countless stories and events we have seen unfold in recent months. I guess the Presidential race only gets more interesting from here. I will definitely be paying very close attention when I get the chance. It's always nice to know that if you miss something big, chances are your only a few clicks away from being informed.  

Looking forward to the broadcast. And while I know it is very selfish of me to say so, I hope after your schedule returns back to normal that you can do some ol' vining online.

NBC's coverage of the Republican Convention has been terrible. Liberal Bias has been so bad the past 2 nights, I have turned to PBS broadcasting so I could hear news reported, instead of NBC's version of news manipulated, and commentary filled with snarling facial expressions, raised eyebrows and liberal
bias. As usual Democrats and NBC TV Media continue to scrat each others backs in election years.
Also the timely cutting away of speeches so NBC can switch to useless on the floor interviews is not fooling anyone.
I simply switch to other channels and see clearly why NBC cuts away; to prevent American viewers from seeing the complete picture. Especially when Republican speeches included media criticism.

It has been a pitiful exhibition of reporting and Journalism. Why don't you guys set up camp in Red China. You'd fit in nicely.

Hey, as my dad used to call me in the 60's, "a wild eyed liberal," you have convinced me, I need to open my mind and see another side.What is going on with the press, the 5 questions reporters are suppose to answer are,who, what, why, where and when. That is what the press is suppose to answer. You should provide facts, let the American people make their own mind up.   At times, I wonder what happen to a great profession.

After over 40 years of voting for a Demo....I will be voting for McCain and Palin.... Step up..and be a real reporter.  Who, What, Where and When. and Why...please report,,,,do not support...If the glove don't fit then you can't convict,,,I sure miss Johnny Cochran

Brian,

Hillary Clinton carried most of the key states.  Obama racked up small numbers of delegates at caucus states and a few large states.  The Democratic Party formed a parade behind Obama (Super Delegates and all) and not only knocked Hillary down but walked all over her.

She told the party they needed her and it fell upon the parade's deaf ears.

It's going to be interesting to see if Hillary gets the last laugh.

I'm afraid the Democratic Party has made another stupid mistake and it's sad.

I must say Brian, that Gov. Palin's speech was to me an exercise in chest pounding supported by vacuous thinking at the issue level. This country is in desperate need of repair which will take the ability to think at a strategic level and then get support to implement their ideas. For the love of me, how can people see greatness in her speech. So she is a pit bull with lipstick. We need politicians that see the issues and what it will take to make them right. Politicians that can meet with heads of state without her baring her fangs at them. In my humble opinion, I think she has limited intellectual skills, not a very nice person, and someone who does not have a world view. Just the fact that she is from a very small state by population, suggests she does not have the breadth of experience for the job. This mirrors 2000, an intellectually limited Presidential candidate, backed up by an attack dog who is also not very nice. I honestly don"t think I could stand it if the republicans got in. Maybe it is time to move to Paris. We both love it there versus putting up with it here.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, Well, another fine broadcast this evening from the Republican National Convention. A big night for Senator McCain as he accepts his nomination and we hear his speech. Hearing you say it is now 62 more days until election day is daunting because it has been such a long campaign process, but as it heads up to that day it will be a "sprint to the finish" so to speak for the candidates with all the debates yet to come. Governor Sarah Palin certainly made her voice heard last night and learning that 37 or 38 million viewers tuned into her speech was amazing. Many transformations in this election. Time will tell until we all go to the polls and make the big choice.
The weather is a huge issue in the Atlantic with Tropical Storm Hanna, Hurricane Ike and Josephine. Seems like Tropical Storm Hanna will bring much rain to the East Coast. Hurricane Ike appears to be a bigger threat with it being a Category 4 hurricane with winds at 135mph. I hope it does not cause any major problems for Florida they certainly don't need any more rain right now. And with all the Weather Channel meteoroligists like Mike Seidel and Jim Cantore watching these storms I really hope they don't have to stay there to report on severe weather hitting that area. I hope you don't have to go down to Florida next week Mr.Williams you have done FAR TOO MUCH travelling lately and need a little time to rest and relax. Besides now you are going to Los Angeles for the Stand Up for Cancer live special on Friday. Which I think is going to be really great and will raise much awareness and funds.
On another note learning of General Petraeus's report on the troop levels and how 146,000 troops will remain is interesting to hear. I feel bad for all the families who still have loved ones fighting over in the Middle East region. God Bless all the brave men and women in uniform. I hope someday they can all come home.

I had to write because I am still getting a laugh out of bush's comments at the convention as presented by NBC. Your, or whoever had the comedic savvy to present them as they were presented, presentation without clap track, was as hilarious as any skit I have ever seen previously. Everytime I think of him reading just one sentence and then just sitting there in the silence with that subaverage chimpanzee look, I just crack up. Thank you. There hasn't been much to laugh about lately, save maybe palin, and I deeply appreciate the effort.

I have waited all week to see if you would give Mrs. McCain the same lengthy interview that you gave to Mrs. Obama and of course you did not.  What happened to the Fairness in Broadcasting Act?  I will no longer be watching NBC Nightly News; in fact I will no longer be watching NBC anything.  I cannot believe the liberal bias exhibited by you.

Please tell me that you will be reporting the Ron Allen interview last night with Newt Gingrich where Newt ate his lunch and Ron had no answer to a simple question...Name 3 things that Obama has accomplished?  Ron, the coward that he apparently is, cut off the interview.  I'd say if NBC news cannot stand the heat, quit trying everyway you can to elect Obama.

Since I am not the only one who thinks so, why doesn't NBC news come clean and admit it is not fair, but biased and sways all stories to make Obama look good.

Brian, I so enjoy your Nightly News show.
Unlike the previous posters, I think your reporting is far less biased than other shows. In fact tonight I watched two evening news shows to get the reaction to Sarah Palin's speech. One was biased. I thought yours was fair.
I am a conservative moving more toward the middle as I age. The media bias can be insulting to conservatives.
Now we have conservative shows that insult the liberals. This is just wrong. (I am not speaking of investigative journalism that digs up true stories of wrong doing and presents the story without rancor.)
 Just wanted to give a thumbs up on your reporting. If you have strong anti-conservative views, I could not tell. And I hope I never do.

Why can't NBC provide the same flawless coverage of the convention as everyone else. Your use of the direct feed of the President's speech on Tuesday night without audio from the convention floor made his remarks seem unappreciated by the delegates. I'm not suggesting a liberal media conspiracy on NBC's part, but the other networks worked out the technical details. Thank you for covering the Wednesday night speakers without interruption.

Dear Mr. Williams,
I am trying to find a forum to discuss what Keith Oberman said on his newscast just minutes ago regarding the video of 9/11 at the Republican convention which he found offensive, since he said he had lost some friends during that terrible day.  I personally found Mr. Oberman offensive.  I too lost two people, cousins in the WTC, brothers who left young children and wives behind.  My own family was returning from an overseas trip and ended spending four days in Halifax.  We were the first plane to land and the last to depart. 9/11 is an American event which we all experienced and will never forget.  Mr. Oberman should not claim ownership.  In addition, he repeatedly gives his own comments and opinions not allowing the American public to form their own.  I personally find him more and more offensive and wish he was taken off the air.  I thoroughly enjoy the NBC and MSNBC lineup and it would be a shame for Mr. Oberman to continue to tarnish its image.

feeling betrayed by the news organization I trust

Keith Olbermann isn't the only one to lose family and friends on 9/11 (if indeed one can believe that he did, given his lack of credibility).

My brother was killed on 9/11 and my family so appreciates that John McCain remembers what happened that day.

It is beyond insulting to hear Keith Olbermann go through a sympathy seeking melodrama for the purpose of bashing his political rivals. Olbermann has a strange idea of what is worthy of attention.
His self indulgent antics aren't. My brother's memory is.

Brian, it's been lovely to have you all here in town, despite the temporary detour for Gustav :)  I hope you enjoyed it and got a chance to play tourist too!

Personally, I've avoided being in St. Paul this week (my last visit was last week over at the Science Museum) and I must say, the one gift that y'all gave us was that all the streetlights now work and there are no potholes anywhere :)  Honestly, the city has never looked better! Thanks to the RNC and the media for coming to town !

I'm glad the convention has gone as well as it has, and I know that the next few weeks will be a mad dash to the finish line. Thank you for covering the convention so well, and for providing such great in depth analysis. It's given us the background and understanding that we needed in a week of surprises.

Reporting is one thing offering your personal opinion is another.. MSNBC and Countdown is by far making me crazy.  There is no fairness right now in the media; especially on the cable networks.  They are pushing the election of Barack Obama; They really need to rename the network MSNBC the network for Liberal Americans and Democrats
Keith is so supporting the Dems they should have put him on the ticket since he acts like he knows so much.  Tonight the Republicans put up a video of 911 and Keith  made a comment that it was without taste I strongly disagree we need to remember no matter how painful it is. I respect those who lost their lives and loved ones that day however, it was a terror attack our safety and security is going to be in the hands of a new administration that will be running our country and I need to know that the person in that office can keep us safe so that never happens again.

National Security should be at the top of the list;

Put Barack in office and within four years he plans on raising our taxes his plan for social security alone.  I can't afford that increase.  No one can.  

But if it happens I will tune into MSNBC to hear how Keith can disagree with Obama.

During your news forcast tonight you said that Kwame Kilpatrick the Mayor of Detroit resigned because of his affair with Beatty.  He resigned because he falsely accused the Chief of police Brown  He lied under oath, he caused him to lose his job to protect his Mayoralship.    Finally the city did something to show young people that no matter who you are if you break the law you are accountable.  I give a lot of credit to the prosecutor. You make it sound like he was prosecuted on a lesser charge. How irresponsible. He left the city of Detroit with a debt of millions.  Where is his love of Detroit there.  He made a mistake but it was a calculated one.  You would think you would point out the integrity involved.

I have never sent an e-mail before but you truly hit a nerve.  When will reality prevail against prejudice.  It is not a matter of politics but fairness for all.

Bryan Williams'interviews are typically an embarrassment. He can't control his face, tone, or interviewee. Who can forget his shamefaced schoolboy retreat before Bill Clinton's wagging finger or his fatuous gushing about old boy Richard Engle's U.S.service men and women morale busting Iraq reportage. And now we have his offensive hostile interview of Senator McCain, refusing to even look him in the eye.By contrast to Williams'sulks,McCain maintained a dignified equanimity. I'm not even a Republican, but I take no pleasure in such transparent bias and lack of basic civility--the total failure of imagination and empathy beyond partisan agendas. I have already registered my disgust with other news network disrespectful, biased, sexist, elitist reporting of the Republican Convention. Williams tops the list, although Charles Gibson of ABC is a close contender. And did Andrea Mitchell really say college educated woman would not vote for Palin? At least Obama does not so lower himself. The national news networks, anchors and reporters, should take a hint and accept some responsibility for lifting the pathetic level of our national discourse.

This is an angry black women who remembers love ones and friends that came from Vietnam wounded and bruised. They never had receptions, congratulations or even a thanks from the American Government.  Unfortunately, they were not John McCain, whose father and grandfather were officers in the military.  They were drafted in the American army and forgotten once they were used up in Vietnam. But why am I surprised, when my father, who served the World War II, could not even go to the same bathroom as the white soilders.  This is the America we still live in now.  When Cindy McCain can go overseas to adopt a child, and never mention giving aid to any of the poor Americans in huricane Katrina.  That is the American that we as black and poor people live in today.

I feel it is unfortunate the news media will not report the news, without any spinning or bias. I long for the day when news casters and news stations will not put an agenda type of spin on a news cast. I am not a Republican or Democrat, Independent, so I am biased toward one side or the other. I do feel the news press leans heavily on the Democratic side, so I do not feel I can trust what is coming over the TV to be the truth and unbiased.
It is very sad when a top story, of "World News" has to do with a tabloid subject that used to be in something like the National Enquirer.
Please get back to reporting the news, in truth and in an unbiased fashion.

The above comments show me that all Americans truly have their own unique view.  I have thought that J.Mc. has gotten the kid glove treatment because you haven't asked  him the same hard questions that you required of B.O. - such as why he won't release his VA records, why he voted for torture, when he was tortured himself, & the judgment of picking a small town mayor who is under an ethics inquiry at this very moment.
It just goes to show that you can't please all the people all the time (to paraphrase P.T. Barnham)

Shame on Brian Williams.  His comment at the end of Sarah Palin's speech was very unprofessional when he said that Palin originally okayed the bridge then fought it when she realized Alaska would be expected to pay part of the cost.  This may be true but should not have been said as he signed off from coverage of the RNC. This comment belonged within the context of a commentary on the speech and reeks of liberal bias.  I will be getting my news from ABC.

I am a college educated, a stay-at-home mom by choice with 4 kids, mexican woman.  I grew up poor and paid for my own college because I wanted to get a higher education.  I will vote for McCain/Palin.  Mitchell is wrong. College educated women are smart and stay-at-home moms are smart, and minorities are smart and are not fooled by the 'let government take care of you', 'change, change, change' (isn't that a song?), and fancy campaigns steered by celebrities who make so much money that they feel they know what is best for the rest of us. By the way how many houses does Oprah have? I don't hear anyone telling her that she has too much!  Women Love Palin!!!!!

Mr. Williams, you made a serious error in your closing remarks at the Republican Convention.  Your statement saying John McCain's plan to change Washington would be difficult since it is his party that has been in charge for the last eight years is inaccurate.  Neither the House of Representatives nor the Senate is controlled by the Republicans.  Please take a momment on your next broadcast to correct this mistake.  Thank you

I watched both the DNC and RNC conventions on NBC the past two weeks.  I am amazed at the bias your news station shows toward the left.  Is it that General Electric, NBC's parent company, will benefit from Obama in the White House?  Why has NBC not asked the questions about Obama being linked to Bill Ayers?  Why was the Reverend Wright scandal looked over?  More attention has been given to Sarah Palin's teenage daughter's pregnancy than on these important issues.  Plus, NBC's polictical director, Chuck Todd, should be fired for voicing his opinion about Sarah Palin when he thought his mic was off.  Obviously, we now know where his political views lie.  I will never purchase a GE appliance, light bulb, or any other product again.  And I am urging the rest of my fellow Americans to do the same by boycotting the GE brand.

As long as I've been alive, having been a serious leftist during the sixties, then slowly learning my college education was destructive rather than helpful, I've slowly become more civilized.  I'm so shocked at the overt hatred displayed by all the networks, most especially by NBC, and even Brian Williams last night.  Even Brian's smooth cover was ruffled to the point that I saw all I needed to see to know that he's just as highly biased as the rest of NBC.  Now, no longer trusted at all.

Palin is real.  NBC is filled with shape-shifters.  I'm so happy to finally see it so more clearly than I could before. She is from the People.  NBC is from the Ivy-League upper class whose interests they must guard. The People aren't part of the equation, unless blind following of the big-city corrupt political machine men of the demos is what you mean. Brian by your slavish cheer-leading for Obama has finally come into focus for me.  Brian's winning personality is really just his cover.  I guess that's his ticket, but a ticket to nowhere as I've joined the millions who no longer trust the ABC, CBS, NBC turf-guarders for the rich Eastern Establishment crowd.

I think it's a wise decision by NBC to drop any pretense of objectivity in its coverage. Viewers such as myself were annyoyed by the this pretense.

We all know that Williams, Brokaw and Matthews are liberal democrats and especially Obama fans. Nothing wrong with that in my books. Might as well report what you think rather than the poor attempts to conceal you views.

When only 30% of the people believe the media has been fair to Sarah Palin (Rassumssen Poll) you know people don't expect objectivity from the media. And of course NBC has been a leader in dropping objectivity from it's broadcasts. Nothing wrong with becoming a partisan news channel. That's the history of America, competition and partisianship.

I just wanted to write it quickly to let so many of you know how sorry I am that all the other television channels on your set aren't working, and you're being forced to watch NBC's coverage of all things politics.  It's such a shame, that you must watch over and over each day/night, coverage which you so obviously dislike.  What's that?  Your other channels ARE working?  You CAN change and watch other networks or cable channels?  Really?!  Hmm. . .

  I'm not going to add anymore to the negative comments you have received about NBC's coverage of the Republican convention. But I will let you know that I have been watching NBC News for over two decades. One of my first memories was Tom Brokaw covering the first shuttle launch, that was exciting! I find myself watching NBC less and less now. And after this week, about all I will probably continue to watch is Jay Leno....and that will be gone soon aswell:-(

Keith Olbermann says he knew some who died on 9/11. He isn't the only one.

My brother was killed on 9/11 and my family so appreciates that John McCain remembers what happened that day.

It is beyond insulting to hear Keith Olbermann go through a sympathy seeking melodrama for the purpose of bashing his political rivals. Olbermann has a strange idea of what is worthy of attention. His self indulgent antics aren't. My brother's memory is.

I guess I could be called a "Rockefeller Republican". Financially conservative / Socially Liberal. I enjoy your particular style and what seems to be an open view of American politics. I wonder to myself how long you can put up with the likes of Mr. Olberman..... on your sister network MSNBC. I never thought I'd miss Mr. Matthews as the network frontman, but I do. At least he is informed and honest about his political views.I watch him to get a pulse on ALL sides of issues. He "pushes" his, but at least talks about competeing ideas. I detest the "humorous" comments that flow from Mr. Olbermans "mind" directly to his mouth. I see the ratings are lower than your network would want - but, why would they elevate such an obviously unqualified individual just to cause some sort of media buzz. I realize this is probably not your fault but maybe you could stand-up against the moronic and promote the honest and informed news coverage you have been known for.

We have seen it coming for a long time and it is very clear after watching (briefly) NBC/MSNBC, it is time you call ace an ace or a skunk is a skunk not a kitty cat.  Go ahead and just say NBC/MSNBC is bias against the principles and policies of a Conservative party.  That's fine, but just say it!!!!

Mr. Williams, my mother (God rest her soul) used to say, that Brian Williams, he is such a nice man...  I do believe you are a nice man, but your bias reporting has forced me to click you off.. The 5 W's and the 1 HOW is what my journalism class taught me over 40 years ago.  Has this changed??  The entire media world is so biased toward the Democrats...  I grew up in a Christian Catholic Home, middle class and my father and mother taught us to always vote the person, not the party, even though my dad was in the union for over 35 years....I can only say that in the weeks ahead, I will read about all the issues, watch and listen and make my decision...  You all should do the same.  And keep it to yourself. Remember the golden rule when asking the questions..

Sarah Palin's pastor, Ed Kalnin, at the Assembly of God church in Wasilla Alaska, espouses that the Iraq war is a "Holy War". Four years ago, he said that anyone who voted for Kerry would not go to Heaven. This pastor reflects an extremist side of the Palin bio.  Palin attended this church for 20 years. Since Obama got nailed for weeks with his pastor's(Jeremiah Wright)rants, why haven't we heard about Kalnin and Palin's religious ties?  Are the Republicans getting a free pass here?

Is the news asked to not ask hard questions or say anything negative about Mrs. Palin because she is a women or because she is a Republican.
How dare the media look into her family or past. It is not like she is running for public office.
Oh.... well it is not right, the media needs to ask her if it is O.K. to ask things about her.

Is anybody ever going to address why wealthy people, especially Fortune 500 CEO's are Republicans?  Isn't it common knowledge that Republicans policies make it easy to stay wealthy once you pass a certain theshold?  When kids ask me what is the difference, this is it, and all that wealth seems to jade the view of responsibility for thopse less fortunate.  Let's close every tax loophold and tax progressively!

Bah, people need to realize what's good for the other people around them rather than just what's going on with someone's opinion. I'm only 16, and I'd rather be worried about what I'm gonna be paying for in the future if people don't start realzing what's really happenning rather than caring about a girl's girl problems.
I just hope things turn out for the better for everyone. Keep up your strive, B.
