In America

I love New York, and spend most of my work hours there -- but I've never confused it with America, where I currently am. Today in St. Paul -- is one of the most sparkling, beautiful days (speaking meteorologically and without any political bias either way, of course) of the calendar year. Yesterday upon arrival here it was gray, stormy and windy. My mother's longtime adage, "when you see the underside of the leaves, its about to storm," quickly came true, as a big front blew through, and last night's low temperature plunged to 48 degrees. Today it's breezy, sunny and 68 -- and during the exactly 17 minutes I spent outdoors, in a line to go through the Secret Service checkpoint, it was the perfect day. We're back inside the convention center, monitoring the politics of this gathering, preparing to preview tonight's convention agenda, and deciding our coverage for tonight's broadcast.

I've had the good fortune of spending quite a bit of time in St. Paul over the past few years -- and it is a great American city -- it was great to drive by the Fitzgerald Theatre last night (home of Prarie Home Companion) and Mickey's Diner (open 24 hours, filled with convention delegates 24 hours) and when the doorman at the hotel last night asked about my college-age daughter BY NAME -- and how big my son was getting -- I almost fell over dead. You've perhaps heard the expression, "Minnesota Nice." With the usual exceptions, it is true. This is a great place to visit and a great place to live.

One side benefit to being here: you get to see the commercials on both sides of the Al Franken/Norm Coleman Senate race - some are funny, some are rough. It's still...interesting...to see a guy we grew up with watching on SNL running for one of 100 seats in the U.S. Senate. It will be one of the races to watch on election night.

We hope you can join us from here tonight: both for Nightly News and our special hour on the network in prime time.

Hi Brian,

you made so many mistakes during the election campaign there are not worth of calling you a serious journalist:
- took side with Barack Obama during the primaries
- took side with the "angry left" during the GOP con
That are two of the most serious issues that are ridiculous. By that you deminish the legacy of the great newscasters at NBC like Brokaw, Chancellor and Huntley and Brinkley.

Also don't screw Sarah Palin. As I said previously, when it is about a black man and a white woman, the media has bias for the man because Blacks have the stronger lobby in the American media against a weak feminist lobby. Stop that immediately or the results will be seen in terms of ratings that will drop in the next months.

Also get the protesters out of the coverage of MSNBC. It's beyond all bearings that there are angry protesters screaming and interrupting the broadcast. It's a shame for an American media entity to have protesters in the backdrop of a convention coverage that is catering to the Republican party. When the Democrats held their Convention in Denver they had a demonstration zone that was looking like a concentration camp. I know how a concentration looks like, because I'm from Germany who had visited Sachsenhausen. Get those distracting protesters out of the camera.

Also don't screw McCain on health. When the USA was in elections with the Democrats Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John Fitzgerald Kennedy the American media never asked about the health of the candidates. You know Roosevelt was wheelchair-bound and Kennedy suffered from Addison disease (insufficiency of the adrenal glands caused by tuberculosis). You never asked the two politicians about the health records of these two candidates. So don't do it with McCain.

Also don't hope that McCain and Obama would die. You always say that if McCain would die, Sarah Palin would become President or with Obama that Biden will become President. You are so pathetic like Hillary Clinton in the primaries, "because you know Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June". You never ever should draw a scenario that a candidate might die in office.

It's so hypocritical how the American media treats in these days the Republican Party and their respective candidates.
Dear Brian,

As I watch coverage of the Republican National Convention, I am reminded of why I am a registered Democrat.  (I've been doing a lot of shouting at the television set.)  Also, if I could just weigh in for a moment on Governor Palin's daughter - if her parents really cared about protecting her privacy, then the Governor would never have accepted Senator McCain's invitation to act as running mate, thereby exposing her to media attention at the national level.  Governor and Mr. Palin have only themselves and their selfish ambition to blame.

I'll see you tonight!

P.S. - I've been meaning to mention how funny your slip-up of "O'Biden" was the other night!  :-)

Lot of love to the regular posters:  Lisa, Jackie (see you again after Denver), Stephanie (34), Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.  XOXO
Hello Dear Brian,
You need a place like Minnesota, particularly St. Paul for a breather after listening to speeches of no substance and content. I have heard some segments of speeches delivered by Joe Lieberman and Thompson. Lieberman is a chameleon and supports any presidential candidate whose strategy is going to wars in the Middle East. He is a man of war and killing, showing no feeling for the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs, health insurance, and houses. His untruthful words were expected, and his legacy has been established as the untruthful in a difficult time. Thompson is a low level actor and his strategy for running for a president demonstrated that he has no experience and knowledge to take his words (or him) seriously. He was also the worst presidential candidate in recent times, because he did not know what to do and did not what to talk about. President Bush stated that the country needs a president to be on the offense and McCain is the only one to do that. We really need a president to be on the defense and on the offense, a character that neither President Bush nor McCain has. Best Regards
Bring on the protesters.  I want to see more coverage of the protesters.  The protesters decided the election in Chicago in 68.

And speaking of protesters I am wondering how McCain would handle an unfriendly crowd.

When Bush ran in 2000 and 2004 all his rally audiences were picked from GOP supporters.  He didn't have many who disagreed with him in his audiences.  Any who tried to protest when Bush was speaking was lead out quickly.

Without many protesters on his journey he looked into the eyes of Putin and declared him to be a man Bush could work with, and we all know how well that is turning out.  If Bush didn't think everyone in the world loved him he may have been more skeptical of Putin's motive.

The same is holding true with McCain.  The last few times McCain was in the area you had to pick up your tickets from the GOP headquarters if you wanted to see him.  An unofficial screening process.  And when the motorcade came through the police moved the protesters away so McCain didn't have to see the signs.  (Obama's rally was open to anyone.)

Everywhere McCain goes most of the people in the audience will agree with him.  Not everyone on the planet is friendly with the US.

And Obama will have the same problem.  Just because Obama can enter a city and have 200,000 people cheering him doesn't mean the 20 people at the top of the government are also cheering.

I would like to see them open their rallies to both parties to see their reactions to people who oppose them.  A few protest signs that catches the eye of McCain or Obama will be more telling than dozens of speeches.
I enjoy your show and comments.  I'm a white, over 50 women who considers herself an independent.  However I hate to admit it but I did vote for all the Bushes. I was undecided, although I must admit leaning towaard OPbama after his DNC speech. My problem today is with Gov Palin. I don't understand, since she's young and could run later, why she has put her family under all this stress. Like many of us working moms she still needs to be there for her family. Whose planning this young daughter's wedding...will they live as a young couple in Alaska, with her mom in DC?  That's going to be hard on them.  When you're young like this with a child you really need your Mom! Is she finishing school, or going to college like her Mom did...to do that you need your Mom. I'm sorry but its not "country first" to me, its "family first."  She needs to be helping and supporting the baby born with down's s. and now the daughter, plus her other children who are all at challenging ages.  You can do it while working, lots of us do.  You just can't do it when you have to travel to Egypt for a funeral or to Russia for a meeting. It seems like a very selfish act on her part and as a women and a mother to 3, and a grandmother to (almost) 2. I just can't support it. I've tried but have to many issues with her. Kids are too important, we need to put their needs first in our lives!! I now feel like Sen McCain will do ANYTHING for a vote, Don't think I can go there and will probably vote demoncratic for the first time in over 15 years.
As we know so well, Brian is "4 New York." I like that first line of this post, Brian.
If you want to give some sembalance of fair and balanced reporting, pls anwser these questions for me:  1- Why is the media allowing the Democrats to compare Gov Palin's experience to Biden and not doing the same McCain vs Obama?  Is this not a Presidential Election?  You make it sound like a foregone conclusion that Senator McCain, if elected, will not make it through his first term.  2-  You, the media, constantly say you are not going to talk about Bristol Palin's pregnacy and therefore keep it in the forefrount.  If you are so suddenly concerned about moral values, something that you (the media), were never concerned about before, then why are you not hammering Obama about the fact that his mother was an unwed, single parent.  Notice that the GOP did not use this.  3- Why at you not correcting Obama's statement when he says that the Republicans said that the election would be about personalities not issues?  What was said was that the opening day of the convention would be about personalities, not the election.  4- Why are you not pointing out the fact that the first day of the Democratic Convention was used to introduce the candidates and no isuues were discussed, something Obama is accusing the GOP of?  I think the reason is that this would be something known as fair and balanced reporting.  I am extremely disappointed in MNBC, a place I have gone for what I thought was a balanced picture.

Dear Brian & NBC News Staff,

After watching NBC News for many years, it is time to say BYE.  I am so disappointed in the "reporting" that now seems to be the norm for NBC that I can no longer subject myself to the feelings of indignation that I have when the reporting is so biased and incomplete. SO sad, so sad.

Perhaps I will again tune in one day to see if the NBC News has changed and is capable of fair and unbiased reporting.
Brian and Andrea Mitchell-- Your lead story tonight on Sarah Palin was just as skewed as Dan Rather's liberal
political comments  of  15 years ago !
Shame on you and NBC !  Why not  just report the news?
RK Lodge
Wow, I've been an avid, let me say, loyal listener of NBC since I was a teenager.  I am now 41.  I've always voted for the democratic party ever since I could vote.  I am not this year.  This is why I am angry at Brian's and many NBC reporters who have been putting Barack on a "Hail Ceasar" best candidate for this country spin.  You omitted the croud chearing during Busch's speech (all other networks could figure that out) and you have people on who praise Obama.  I think you should stick to your journalism and not your personal opinions.  I am sooo disappointed in Brian's and NBC's coverage of the Republican convention that I will not watch your news coverage anymore.  Why don't you cover Obama's shady deals with terrorists and shady deal with his buying of his own home?  Instead, you cover minor things on Palin.  After being a loyal, female listener of 25 years, I am moving on.
Christine
To call yourself a journalist is criminal. It's not what you report but what you don't report. During the Democratic Convention you barely gave lip service to the invasion of Georgia, US and other warships in the Black Sea, the erupting situation in Pakistan, two emergency meetings of NATO, plus other relavent and important issues. We used to be able to listen to the nightly news and get an unbiased reporting of all important issues. Apparently, not by you.
Hey Brian,
How come you don't talk about this story 'Biden's Son, Brother Named in Two Suits'

A son and a brother of Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D-Del.) are accused in two lawsuits of defrauding a former business partner and an investor of millions of dollars in a hedge fund deal that went sour, court records show.

or better yet the racist comments made made by Biden in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIT3jUrNTX0

I guess your coverage isn't that fair
Mr. Williams, Was "reporter" (and I intentionally put his name in quotes because he sure acting far more like an editorialist rather than a reporter tonight) John Larson's report on Wasilla, Alaska intended to be sarcastic humor or an actual report on Sarah Palin's town?  Which ever was the case, it failed.  Miserably.  I actually would like to have learned something about the town, other than it's population - which has been reported everywhere for the past several days.  Also, it was rather shameful of Mr. Larson to interview only one person, who just so happened to be a Palin critic.  Could you find no other people in Wasilla who were supporters?!  We want to hear from them too and why they liked her as a citizen, mayor, and governor.  As a basic report is also failed to provide any information on how people are employed, how many were native and how many moved to Wasilla.  Facts please, not opinions, Mr. Larson!  A shame that you traveled all that way for such a pitifully poor report!
Let me just say that what little I still know about Gov. Palin has not made me a fan.  However, the press on her has irritated me.  I must agree with the GOP rep that Andrea Mitchell interviewed this morning on MSNBC today: THIS woman is offended by the way Palin has been "covered" and investigated" by the media at large.  I still plan on watching her speech tonight.  Regardless of how I vote, I want to know what she's got to say - after all, there is the possibility she could be 2nd in command of the country in less than 100 days.  I couldn't miss Obama's speech last week because of it being history; I also can't miss Palin's speech for the same reason.  I am anxious to hear what she's got to say.  I do not vote by party, but by issues and candidates; I cheer for the process.  Tonight will be one of those nights.  I can't wait!

Ah, the youth vote.  I so hope they come out in droves this year.  I remember being part of that "youth vote" in 1992, which was the first year I was eligible to vote at all, and I got to vote for president!  Number 18 was the birthday I yearned for most, so I could vote.  I was annoyed at being classified with the "MTV" generation that year - I've never watched MTV.  I was one of those kids who was raised by legal immigrants and first-born American Republicans to cherish my ability to vote.  My privilege to vote has always been the most cherished to me, and I have not missed an election cycle since.  No matter what party the members of the youth subscribe to, my goal in participating in the campaigns this year is to make sure every vote counts and every voter is informed.  If a person can vote his or her convictions, then we have had a good day.  I may disagree with your choice, but it is your privilege, as well as mine, to have a discourse and agree to disagree at the end of the time.

May I address other posters to the blog: grow up!  If you don't like the coverage here, TURN THE CHANNEL or OPEN YOUR WEB BROWSER.  We've got so many places to get our news, why do you carry on about how "evil" NBC is?  I don't always agree with The Nightly News, and I've shared those opinions here.  I also don't make NBC or MSNBC my exclusive news source.  This is how I attempt to keep myself objective; it is something that 9/11 changed in me.

Hello to all the regular posters, whose ranks are growing, but special hellos to the "older" regulars like Anna, Lisa, Jackie, Anna, and Matt!  I've had my nose stuck in a book today... I am finding Richard's book painful to read, but read it, I must.  Where is that book... interrupt me at 10PM, please!
Brian,
After a lifetime of watching NBC News, I can no longer tune in the Nightly News.  It is discouraging to think journalists are unable to report without personal bias.  You should wear an Obama pin on your lapel.

After watching your segment on Gov. Palin's town, Wasilla, where she was mayor, I have just one question,  "How hard was NBC's search to find and interview one person to bash Sarah Palin?" NBC has taken taken unfair reporting to a new level.

Brian,
Let an old soldier say his piece. We are sending mothers to Iraq with young children they are being maimed and killed. They do this because they believe in what they do. So why when a woman wants to be Vice President is there such an uproar? There is a double standard here and I am disgusted with a lot of what the media feels is news and it is personal and private. We really need to get to the real issues here! We do need change and I for one welcome the idea of a woman in the oval office! We men have done a fine job of showing just what politics as usual amounts to. Maybe a woman is the change we need!
The arrests of law-abiding protesters and journalist Amy Goodman should be reported.  You should have a Constitutional law professor on to discuss the violations of 1st amentdment rights that have transpired.  And may I add that I'm terribly offended by the Conservative bias Andrea Mitchell and other reporters show when they parrot the "maverick" fiction. They sound like they're on the McCain payroll.  McCain has always caved when his political positions became too risky. He's flip-flopped more than any other candidate I've seen.  Even his POW "heroism" is largely myth, propagated by his base, the media. For the real story, research "Songbird" McCain, beneficiary of favors from the Viet Cong no other POW received.
I WILL NEVER WATCH NBC EVER AGAIN.  THE PERSONAL ATTACKS ON GOV PALIN AND THE BIASED REPORTING FOR OBAMA/BIDEN IS BIZARRE AND UNWORTHY OF INTELLIGENT BEINGS.  MAUREEN
DOUD ATTACKED PALIN BECAUSE OF HER HAIRSTYLE AND CLOTHES-HOW JEALOUS ALL THESE FEMALE/FEMINAZIS ARE.  ALSO FOR THE PERSON WHO BERATED PALIN FOR EXPOSING HER DAUGHER--EXCUSE ME, BUT SHE AND HER HUSBAND ASKED FOR PRIVACY IN THIS FAMILY MATTER.  DEMS ARE OBSCENE, HATEFUL & LACK THE ABILITY TO DEBATE ISSUES.
Hi Brian -

How's the summer going for you so far? Sorry, you look a bit weary these days. Glad you have your son with you - but maybe you should have had him tending to the Yankees - it doesn't look too good for them now.

Conventions - I remember 1968 - when Governor Abe Ribicoff of CT. chastised Mayor Daley (father of the current Mayor)from the podium about Gestapo tactics. That was the worst in my memory. Because they are all about partisanship, some of your readers will take up that cause.  Keep your cool, you know exactly the path to travel.

Minnesota - I am the grand-daughter of one of the five Pedersen brothers who emigrated to the US in the early 1900 settling first in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and then to New Jersey, Connecticut and Minnesota.  I can still hear that gentle language from Grandpa Chris and there are many in Minnesota - Aunts, Uncles, Cousins who 'speak Norse'.  Enjoy your time there in the land of the "Prairie Home Companion".

Joan
Watched the report of Sara Palin, and was really hoping you (your network) wouldn't tke the low road...but you did. Tabloid muck raking is one way to put it. Never heard those kind of comments on Edwards "love child".  And then you in the media wonder why your ratings are dropping.  We're not all dummies that only listen to one news source, and really have no idea what the real truth is!  Get real, or you and the Liberal press will be without an educated audience.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast from the Republican Convention this evening. It will certainly be an eventful night with the speech by Governor Sarah Palin nominated for Vice President of the United States. Now on to the broadcast. The conversation with Richard Haas from the Council of Foreign Affairs in New York (I hope I got that right.) was most interesting because of the three regions he mentioned that are worrisome to him, Pakistan,Iran and Russia. Whoever the next President and Vice President may be come November they will have to deal with these regions and their leaders. As Richard mentioned Pakistan causing the most concern due to their unwillingness to deal with the war on terror. then Iran with its nuclear program and finally Russia with the resurgency. There is alot of work to be done and our next elected leaders need deperately to handle our own country's problems concerning energy, the economy, the fact out military is stretched to the limit and many other issues. It is a mountain of issues, but it can be done effectively and efficiently with the right people in office. Hopefully, soon peace will be the norm.
On the subject of weather all those storms in the Atlantic are really daunting to see lined up. I hope Hanna doesn't cause too much damage to South Carolina and the rest of the East Coast. I'm wondering if our State will receive any rain as a result of it. Maybe or maybe not. Time will tell by the end of the week.
It is good to hear the residents of New Orleans are able to return to their homes. The report by Mr.Potter showed how relieved people looked to be finally home although there was debris and a water pipe burst at least the people themselves were okay.
Finally, I enjoyed the "What Works" segment on the group "Greencare for Troops" who have volunteers who help mow lawns, create beautiful gardens as seen at the home of the young mother and her baby while her husband is deployed in Iraq, and other types of yard work for these military families. It can be too much work for one person to do and these volunteers are showing this is the service they can provide while these brave men and women are fighting for our country. It is wonderful it has grown to 1600 volunteers. What a nice program! Good piece!
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. See you later on tonight. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Anna-I like your suggestion on Richard answering the phone! It would be wonderful!
Stephanie- I am happy you finally have the book! It really touched my heart deeply! And it is extraordinary!
Jackie-Have a wonderful trip to Denver!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Miss You! I hope to see one of your reports soon!
XOXO

Brian,
I have always had respect for you in the past but tonight show really turned me off.  With that
I have just watched my last episode of the NBC Nightly News.  After watching the extreme biased reporting by "Hypocrite" Andrea Mitchell, I realized that she is on a crusade to help elect Obama to the Presidency.  Then on the very next segment John Larson, shows that he is part of the liberal left wing.  It is amazing to me that he could do a report with so many negative adjectives.  It sounded more like a one sided persuasive paper than a news report.

NBC should be ashamed for claiming to be a legitimate news network when airing these stories.  (The News is supposed to report the news without bias!  What ever happened to informing the public?)

Your negativity is going to backfire on you.  You are turning off your core audience.  I really expected more from a major network news source.
Dear Brian and political reporters of NBC and MSNBC;
I believe that one of John McCain's reasons for choosing Gov. Sarah Palen is that she is the anit-Dick Cheney.  Our last two Vice-Presidents were highly involved in the serious issues facing our nation.  (You should come to Wyoming some time and get the everyday Wyomingite's impressions of Dick Cheney--it ain't purty!)  Sarah Palen has neither the experience or the knowledge to be highly involved with much of anything on a national and international level.  And John McCain saying she's the most qualified of his choices because of her knowledge about energy issues?--was that before or after her taking political contributions from VECO?  If you believe women should speak when spoken to, stay in the kitchen, and take care of the children, then vote for McCain/Palen.  He won't let her out of her office.
NBC and their affiliates continue to show their bias by beating the Palin pregnancy story to death. Even Obama said "the kids are off limits", Shame on you.
A cheap shot that cost you my viewership.
DEAR mr, williams:  `I think Al Franken will make a great Senator.  He was fabulous on SNL and it's good that he will bring some humor to those stuffy conservative republicans.   `post script mr. Schulz is a tough guy, I love him.
I received your message, as ususal it was nothing but double talk.  All you at NBC want is positive, you cannot take any critisism.
Thank you Marc Schulz and Carol Willis for your posts as they were awesome and so true. Williams refuses to post mine but, you both said it all. Am thinking all this bias and disrepectful agendas NBC broadcasts on a daily basis will hopefully blow up in their faces. You know, kinda like Dan the man Rather
Sorry to hear the Republicans are attacking the media again but that's what they do whenever somebody questions them. All the McCain camp had to do on this baby thing was release a birth certificate for Trig and put it all to rest. Instead, they trotted out the daughter to create sympathy and a backlash. Now they are trying to stir resentment and make the media stop questioning a lady who has only been asked to fill out a form to be next in line to lead the free world.

The public needs to know what what's up with Sarah Palin and the NBC reports on the troopergatge investigation and problems with the librarian aired tonight were nicely done. But we have at least 200 negative stories about her on the net. Please check out as many as you can and don't be intimidated by the GOP.

One that is currently up is that Sarah Palin attended a Church service two weeks ago and an anti-Semetic sermon was given. The media spent a whole month on Obama's pastor and McCain ripped Obama up and down. The GOP is planning a massive TV ad campaign to bring up Reverend Wright again closer to the election. It would be astonishly hypocritical of the GOP to complain if the press looks into the service at Palin's church.

NBC on the web reports Palin had a meeting with top AIPAC officials in her hotel room. Are the sermon and the meeting related?

PS: There's a transcript of the Sermon on the web. E-mail me if you want a link.
Obviously, Brian, you and the rest of the NBC new staff are Obama supporters and will do all that you can to ensure his election. I always thought the news should be presented in an unbiased manner--NBC does not do that--just heard John Larson's reporting from Wasilla--what a hatchet job. Could he find no one  who had a favorable comment? More about her record and less nit picking and pleeze, no more pregnancy stories. Maybe a few comments about her accomplishments, i.e.cancelling the bridge to nowhere, would be appreciated andwhat about her taxing of the gas companies.
@ Normand from NYC:

Just wondering if T Boone Pickens is running all his ads on NN in NYC!   He is advertising wind and natural gas every night here.   It's better than Viagra and restless leg syndrome!
Can you believe that today McCain apologized for the "media intrusion" into Palin's personal life. It's typical of the GOP party line -- when all else fails, attack the media.  McCain screwed up, the GOP pros know it, and now all inquires into this complete unknown, unqualified, 1 year governor's career and family life are off limits?! She chose to have an infant with Down Sydrome -- that was her and only her own choice.  OK, now raise the infant and provide the baby with special needs; no,instead she thinks she's qualified to be VP, even though she knows NOTHING about national affairs. Hey Sarah, raise your family properly.  You already complicated your 16 yr. old daughter's life by preaching abstinance instead of providing sex education in her home schooling. Then you lied about not supporting the Bridge to Nowhere and the millions of dollars in earmarks you obtained for Alaska.  If Sarah Palin preaches about family values and the need for honesty in government, why should ANYONE listen? Family values, indeed.
dear brian, david gregory, andreas mitchell and all the others on convention watch -- thank you for doing an outstanding job.  I just heard that Palin is going to bash the media -- pls do not let go of your journalistic nose to get the story.  Telling the truth about what a candidate has said, or done, is not an attack of the media left -- it is responsible journalism.

This election is all about what is best for America - and credentials count, as do prior statements and ideology.  There is a separation of church and state for a reason  -- and at NO TIME should we be sending soldiers to war to do god's tasks.  If that doesn't scare voters, what will -- someone's personal definition of God is not what this country was founded for -- freedom of religion is a basic tenet, and that means not having to accept a fringe definition
A lot of media energy seems to focus on fluff, but little on issues.  The northeastern Ivy League senators were determined not to give Hillary a place with the good ole BOYS.  Now, does anybody think they will leave a trick up their sleeves with Mrs. Palin in the race?

Is it germain that Biden has more TERMS in the Senate than Obama has YEARS?

It may not be germain that Oprah and Giuliani each have more executive experience than all four candidates added together, but it gives one pause.
Without Oprah and over 95% of voting blacks early support, Obama would have been watching from the sidelines.  Yet one should not suggest that action was based on race.

Democrats and their pundits agonise over a 17 yr. old making a mistake, but are quick to glaze over Obama's many questionable judgements.  One might think their teenagers put aside independant thought and were just super--right Ms. Walters?

To Washington-ites, political pundits, and those that are for Obama no matter what:
Obama was raised by his white family in Hawaii, attended Harvard Law School and has more in common with George Bush than Oprah, much less Al's and Jesse's people.  Of all the early serious presidential candidates, Obama is the least qualified.  Maybe by being Avis (or Budget) he will try harder and live up to the needs of the people.

This election process has shown me the contrived, controlled, nature of today's Washington politics, and I question the value of the two party system.

Obama revised a Kerry line...I first voted against FL's votes counting before I voted for them to count.
What a guy!  He had the election locked up first and now want FL to vote for him in the general election.

Billy Bob, Florida where we can once again vote..for the MAN!
I sent you an e-mail about the Palin story out of Alaska and alleged misuse of her authority as governor related to former brother-in-law. I am a registered independant after being a republican since Nixon. Can,t stand bush and what he has done to the presidency and his abuse of the constitution. Palin will and her supporters will have to understand that she will be scrutinized like any other male or female canidate and the gloves come of and she doesn,t get a pass just because she's a women. Can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.
Brian,

I appreciate your civilized politeness shown in your words here.  This is such a positive change from the overt hatred shown on so much of the highly biased MSM.  Brian, you seem at this time unwilling to show the viciousness, the rest of the media people feel so strongly that they can't help themselves, belying their civilized fronts, afforded so many wealthy, priviledged Americans today.
I am wondering why you are not doing more coverage of the Police State antics being done by the local law enforcement to the protesters, including some of your own fellow journalists.

Read this blog for more info:

No, it's not my blog and if you think the person has an agenda, read it.  It's not about Repubs or Democrats, it's about Americans getting their civil rights violated.

Brian-
Evn though I'm pretty liberal I loved your line on the Daily Show the other day when you called Stewart's show a "liberal salon".  Good come back
As a viet nam vet I just want to clearup one thing. John Mccain for all his good assets is not a hero. An ex pow, a veteran of a war yes, but a hero no! If he is a hero what do we call the fire fighters and police officers and other military people who risk their lives to save people. What Sen. McCAin did was his job he just got caught.
Whatever happened to neutral reporting?  Brian you are obviously so biased, you should get out of news and do work straight for obama.  Just can't appreciate a lady that has accomplished more than her opponent.  Get a life and report the news, don't do your editorializing.
I love it when you smack Jon Stewart around. It's hilarious.
Its very obvious you are a Democrat which is toally wrong for a network newscaster. I guess you to connected with our beautiful liberal celebrities.
Brian:

Thanks for interjecting a note of reality into the slobber fest over Palin tonight. Why such surprise she can read from a teleprompter? She was a sportscaster and has hopefully also given speeches before. Talk about setting the bar low. Course, they did have to spell New-Clear so she would say it right.

It sounded like now that she gave a speech, game and questions over. Huh, they haven't even started-this woman hasn't even been interviewed, given a press conference or in any way made herself available in a non-scrited event-and we're supposed to say, OK, you can be leader of the free world.

PLEASE, PLEASE, the media needs to do it's job and question this woman, whoever she is-this former beauty queen, sportscaster, small town mayor who asked people to pray for a pipeline and who wants to deny families the "choice" she brags about her daughter making. From the little I've read there's a lot there-don't let the phony sexism charges stop you.
Dear Mr. Williams,

I just finished watching the Republican Convention and your comments solidify just what Mrs. Palin was talking about.  A very powerful left wing, bias media.  You are it.  I could see and feel your contempt and bias toward her. I must say though I liked it because you were viably upset with her Home run performance. Did you confirm the truthfulness of the blogg you quoted?  I will bet not.  Its something against conservative people and that is enough for you.  I have been a silent conservative and not very interested in this election.  After watching her speech and listening to your comments, I am pledging a lot of money again to the republican party.  I just hate the unfair treatment you and the other main 3 media channels dole out night after night.
Way to go, Brian, for reading on the air (MSNBC) tonight this excerpt from the excellent Time Swampland blog piece written by Joe Klein concerning the Republican attacks on the media:

"There is a tendency in the media to kick ourselves, cringe and withdraw, when we are criticized. But I hope my colleagues stand strong in this case: it is important for the public to know that Palin raised taxes as governor, supported the Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it, pursued pork-barrel projects as mayor, tried to ban books at the local library and thinks the war in Iraq is "a task from God." The attempts by the McCain campaign to bully us into not reporting such things are not only stupidly aggressive, but unprofessional in the extreme."

Brian,
Thank you for reading Joe Klein's piece about what Sarah Palin really did in Alaska - raised taxes, tried to ban books in the library, supported the bridge to nowhere, etc.  That helped to balance all of the distortions and hype about her record as Mayor and Governor.
Dear Brian,

After watching the convention coverage this evening, especially after Palin's speech, I couldn't help but feel like something was missing. And then I realized what it was: Tim. His excitement and enthusiasm for nights like this along with his big smile are truly missed.
Dear Mr. Williams,

I was coasting channels after tonight's Gov. Sarah Palin's speech at the RNC and I happened to come across your comments seating next to Tom Brokaw and I quote: "it was just another night in St. Paul".  You probably won't read this yourself.  I've worked in the Media since 1991 and I know anchors have no time to go through their mail.  But to whomever is reading this on your behalf, and since I'm entitled to my own opinion as well, please tell Mr. Williams that tonight was not just another night in St. Paul.  I am a journalist too and although I don't earn a seven or eight figure salary as Mr. Williams does, I had worked for the best outlets in the nation and I have brains. Tonight, Mr. Williams, we witnessed history.  Your comment insulted me as a woman, as a journalist, as a minority and yes, as a Daughter of the American Revolution.   Don’t complain when people in this country look at our Media with no respect after comments like the one you made tonight.

Sincerely,

Natalie French

To Brian Williams and the producers of MSNBC,
As a young American who will vote in the 2008 election, I look to the media as one source to see the candidates of who I will vote for. I started this of course as undecided and very open minded. I have watched various news programs. In doing this, I keep noticing how MSNBC (who before this I loved to watch) is very biased all the way around.  I watch your programs to see the news as the facts. I dont watch it to see Obama TV or McCain for that matter. I am still undecided, but will not continue to watch your network or promote any shows on this network.  I will actually ask people to not watch this network at all, via emails, mouth, my local newspaper, and local television.  Small ways I know, but it will eventually make an impact.  It is not appealing to watch Brian Williams(obviously for a large paycheck) and others to do what the producers want.(One of the "others" was some unknown black journalist at the RNC who said a delegate should restrain himself after he yelled for joy on McCains nomination, the most unprofessional behavior on tv I have seen). You are kidding yourself if you think the Amercian people are going to take to this network where people are reporting their view instead of the facts.  America is not stupid. Thanks for the opportunity to email my opinion and I hope this goes way beyond Brian Williams. To Brian: I used to watch you on NBC with great admiration as Americas spokesman. Not anymore, your a sell out and not doing the occupation you went to college for.  Did you mean political science?  Go back to Journalism 101 and regroup.
Thank you
The Undecided American Voter who will no longer watch or promote this network

Brian and all of NBC,
I am very much aware of our Constitutional Amendments, however Pat Buchanan evokes an embarrassment for my country I have never felt.
The scam being perpetrated on the people of American and their constitution is truly epoch. I cannot express enough alarming concern for the dispiriting turmoil ongoing in America. As our nation slips further into insolventcy the real issue driving the acrimony will become clear.  Blaming the media is an old saw. So much is not being told, confusion is the mantra, the single greatest casualty in America has been the truth.  Brian stand up and continue to tell it best you know how.  Truths have been dimissed and marginalized for too long. Soon enough they will become self evident. I haven't had a drink for many years but I think one may be appropriate right about now.

with much sincerity,

It's so wonderful to hear people acknowledge and praise what Minnesotans (OK, OK, I admit it: transplanted Iowan) love to talk about day after day: the weather and Minnesota Nice.

Thanks for all your coverage during this election season.

(And I am required, as a Saint Paul-ite, to thank you for not confusing us with Minneapolis, our dear, fraternal twin. :)
