About last night

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

It's now clear the television audience was sizable last night. It was quite an event we witnessed, and afterward we flew home overnight -- basically a laundry and re-fueling stop -- and then it's off to St. Paul after one broadcast in New York. We'll be in Minnesota until next Thursday night, when we leave for Los Angeles for the Stand Up To Cancer live special. With 67 days to go until we pick a new President, it's going to be like this for a while.

It got even more interesting today with Sen. McCain's pick of Gov. Sarah Palin... nicely setting up the excitement over the gathering in St. Paul.

So please join us from New York tonight, and then we'll see you from another great American City.

As I indicated previously, you did not show up for the republicans.  NBC Universal has truly become DNC TV

Dear Mr. Williams:

Often I find myself chasing glaringly missing omissions from the national broadcast news. Nevertheless, I am happy to say I always watch your program as well as the News Hour on PBS. Is it my imagination or do certain stories get buried purposefully? I haven't heard a single mention of Monegan, Stambaugh, or Emmons in regards to Palin anywhere. You could scoop every network! Is it because she's relatively new on the scene, a woman, a republican or all the above? Try Google news, I'm finding it's a great source of information. B/t/w: Did NBC really have to send every reporter they have to New Orleans? Well, hope you dry off and have a nice warm meal. Cheers, a dedicated viewer - Armando

Under investigation for ethics violation. Read news report: Palin hires attorney for public safety controversy
by Steve Quinn
The Associated Press
Monday, Sept. 1, 2008

JUNEAU, Alaska -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the GOP vice presidential candidate, has hired a private practice attorney to defend her and members of her staff in the investigation into the firing of her public safety commissioner.

The state Legislature is investigating whether Palin fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan after he refused to fire a state trooper who had divorced Palin's sister.

Anchorage attorney Thomas V. Van Flein has requested a copy of all witness statements and documentary evidence from the Legislature's investigator, Stephen Branchflower.

Sen. Hollis French, an Anchorage Democrat, responded on behalf of Branchflower, saying he instructed Branchflower not to comply with the request.

In July, a legislative oversight committee approved $100,000 for an investigation into whether Palin abused her power in firing Monegan.
Brian:

You appear to be a person who is very concerned about use of our language. Please consider an observation about "cement" and "concrete." Last night, while reporting from New Orleans, you were on a ladder at a floodwall and referred to the wall as being made of "cement." The correct term is "concrete." Cement is one component of concrete, along with sand, gravel, and water.

Misuse of "cement" is rampant in the popular press. Perhaps you can "lead the way" in correcting the situation.

I enjoy your show.

Stuart
Brian - you are such a good reporter - how could you possibly ask such a DUMB question "do you think people will think you hollered WOLF in evacuating everyone - the next time a hurricane is approaching".  Why not compliment and praise the mayor and those involved for doing such a good job.  NBC would have been the 1st to say what a bad job they did if Gustave would have materialized and did a lot of damage and they didn't  evacuate everyone.  Please "think before you speak" you usually do - but sorely missed the boat this time.
As a woman and a mother....WHY do all the "talking heads" insist on focusing on the Palin daughters pregnancy as a qualifier for her mother?  NO ONE EVER asked Jeb Bush if he spent enough time at home or as a dad when his daughter was in a drug rehab program?  This morning (8-8:30 am Eastern time) all 3 major networks and CNN were rehashing the same thing, the Palin announcement and if she'd been vetted.  It appears to me the only ones who didn't vet her enough were the newscasters and now they are in disbelief that McCain "scooped" 'em.
I used to trust NBC News, not anymore.  First of all, you have far more favorable coverage of Obama than McCain.  Go back and check it.

Secondly, MSNBC's Countdown is not journalism.  How can you sit there and tolerate the "news" (opinion)that you are putting out.

Just read the comments you get, nothing about the programming, just people expressing their political opinion.
When you broadcast Pres. Bush's recorded speech, you did not broadcast the response of the crowd, leaving periods of silence coming across the TV, as if there was no response to his speech, when all the time the crowds were cheering his comments. This is prejudicial, a sad reflection of your support of the Democrat Party, and you disrespect for our President and the Republican Party. This is an insult to every Republican in our country.
Mr. Williams and NBC crew - I'm writing to let you know that my 19 y/o college student daughter, husband and myself were watching your station last night.  We were surprised to see "America's Got Talent" presented instead of the GOP Convention. This, while the President was making his speech, no less. (You mentioned it was the "fault" of the GOP not knowing what YOU planned to do - what?!) We watched your channel during the the Dem's convention and caught all the speeches - uninterrupted.  We were so disappointed first by the mocking way the President's speech was presented and then only to see you interrupt Fred Thompson with Tom Brokaw and your bantering.  Needless to say, we switched channels.
Also, so you know - While many Americans are still exploring our knowledge of Gov. Palin, the one thing that should not be tolerated is the sexist line of questioning and inuendo that is being played out on both her family and her qualifications.  I was exceedingly proud to see our First Lady defend this position and hopefully, more Women of stature will do the same.
HI Brian,
I have a few questions for Candidate Palin.
I find it interesting that the Republicans respond to any questions about her having 5 children including an infant with special needs with no one asks Barak Obama that question. But this is after all the US and we still live with society's expectations of family life. I honestly wonder how will she manage a job as VP and take adequate care of her children.  This is a valid question.
#2. If she is not in with Big Oil. Why has she sued the Federal Government to get the Polar Bear off The Endangered Species List?  That is what is stopping the drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge.
#3. Where is her experience in foreign policy matters? Senator McCain is not a young man. I am very afraid that if Candidate Palin becomes president we will be be in trouble. Being Mayor of a city the size of Wasilla, Ak and then being Gov. for a year and a half is NO experience.
#4 Why did she back out of her campaign promise to build the bridge in Anchorage?
#5 Why did she refuse to sign the referendum to stop the killing of wolves from helicopters after she said she would?
If she wants my vote, she needs to answer these questions.  She owes American that.
Brian,
Sarah Palin is a bright and engaging woman who can deliver a scripted speech well and appeal to the conservative base of the Republican party.  Unfortunately, I do not believe that she will have much appeal to the Independent voters who will determine this election and are looking for someone who can unite the country.  It appears that the Republicans have decided to use her as their attack dog instead of the maverick outsider.  I admire her but I am not impressed.  She can forget attracting any Hillary Clinton voters - she is no Hillary Clinton by any stretch of the imagination.  I say this as a 65 yr old white woman.
