ABOUT THIS BLOG

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Anatomy of a rumor

Posted: Thursday, August 28, 2008 4:10 PM by Sam Singal

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

We are at the cathedral of the Denver Broncos -- Invesco Field -- which for tonight only is a Democratic cathedral.

When we arrived here in Denver days ago, the rumor was a "music legend" was going to perform prior to Obama's speech tonight. That quickly morphed into "Bruce Springsteen is playing." I guess people figured: Springsteen's a legend, and he has endorsed Obama. All true. Except: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band never planned on playing here. They put out denials for days...then the rumor was repeated by Maureen Dowd in a New York Times column. Now we've gone to a new defcon level: they have ASKED US to tell everyone they're not coming here, and never planned to. Tonight this crowd (as was previously scheduled) will hear from Sheryl Crow and Stevie Wonder (remember that expression "music legend"?) and John Legend and others. Al Gore will speak, and then Senator Obama will give his acceptance speech -- and then we will briefly fly home, empty dirty laundry from our suitcases, replace it with clean stuff and fly to St. Paul for the GOP convention. All the while, we are watching Gustav and horrified at some of the projections for the path of the storm. I hope I don't need to repeat in this space our concern for, our interest in, or our love for New Orleans. They are on our minds as we head into the night.

Thanks for joining us again tonight. Please join us for our prime time special -- we feel confident we can offer the very best live coverage of Obama's speech.

Hi Brian,

Sad for you that Springsteen won't play tonight as MSNBC has played all day long soundbites of Springsteen songs.

Ann Curry should never ever get an interview with any person. What she did with Beau Biden was an embarrassment. How she looked at him. Also she grabbed him at the arm. A move that no interviewer ever should do. Ann Curry should never ever get a segment of the Nightly News.

Also NBC, don't try to bond rethorical Hurricane Gustav and the GOP convention next week. The only person to blame for Katrina isn't the GOP but that hypocrite Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans. Also when the storm (Gustav) gathers strength, where is that Nagin? Right, at the Democratic Convention in Denver at the microphone of CNN. He should be ousted from office, as he is not on the Gulf Coast preparing for an potential horrendous storm and preparing emergency plans in his own city. And when the storm hits some Aaron Broussard has to cry again on national TV because no one came to help - because Nagin was in Denver instead of in New Orleans.

Tonight - The Saviour - will have his long-awaited air time. As Peggy Noonan in a column in the Wall Street Journal has written, the event remembers me, as a German more of a Nuremberg Rally than as an acceptance speech of a Democratic Party Presidential candidate. And as Obama - the Christ of the Donkeys (symbol of the Democratic Party) - is talking to his 80,000 sheeps down from a podium it is reminding me of Cesar. And as Jesse Jackson once said: "He talking down to black people", now its happens literally.

Also MSNBC try to end your in-fighting between Matthews-Olbermann and Scarborough-Shuster. Tim Russert is bleeding and crying in his grave because of how the news division is going down the drain during the convention.

As a suggestion. NBC News is trying to put more of its news online and enhances its online platform more and more it only would be logical if you provide a permanent live stream of MSNBC also after the elections. You already implement that Newsware and Newsvine stuff into your website, so a live stream would bring a more complete news experience onto the website. Also the financials would profit because you can charge advertiser the double charge for advertising online and on TV simultaneously. Also it benefits foreign viewers who are interested in American news and there are many of people like me who are interested in watching US news. You could provide a serious alternative to CNN.

Please cover the speech of that Obama with as much as possible objectivity that a viewer can expect from NBC News without the in-fighting.

Looking forward to the speech and the broadcast to see tomorrow.
Hi Brian I'm all talked out about my girl Hillary and of course my brother Bill.  I was with some friends today and we agreed that we all where pants suits so as Hillary said we are the Sisterhood of the Traveling pants suits I hope it sticks it has worked for me for over 40 years and counting.

McCain will try to push Obama's speech out of the way all I can say is good luck with that smear.  No word on Cindy McCain's business trip to the Georgia War Zone.

What a difference time makes as Bush might not attend the Republican Convention because he is more concerned about the people in the Gulf Coast and the storm coming called Gustav.  This proves Kanye West's statement was true as 5 days nothing from Bush but now with all the people gone from New Orleans it's time to help those who brought cheap beach front property. Enough said.

See you at 6:30
Hey what do you think about how Obama spends money, on expensive venues and sets.... You think we are in debt now wait and see what he does if he gets in office.  First on his list will be remodel the White House with greek style pillars then new Air-Force 1 that is painted in 24k gold, new limo's and so on...

If your tied of all this you need to take brake and check out ShootTheLiberals.com they have a new game call Freezer Burn where you use specially designed chemically enhanced projectiles which will change mental imbalance in Liberals which prevents them from understanding logic.  IT'S GREAT FUN AND TAKES YOUR MIND OFF HOW MUCH TROUBLE WE REALLY ARE IN.
Mr. Williams,

You all must be getting very hungry out there in Denver with all your meat, red meat, raw meat, and tough meat references. Might I ask "Wheres the beef?". It will be very interesting to see who Senator McCain picks for his VP, but even more interesting to see whether or not Gustav will take his news cycle away from him and the Republican Party.

Looking forward to the big night
I remember a time, and it wasn't that long ago, the networks all took pride in their gavel-to-gavel coverage of both the Dem and GOP conventions.

It's a shame, the convention process, which will determine, in part, how the country will operate nationally and internationally for years to come: Supreme Court justices, current wars, in which form national health insurance will take (it's coming no matter who is in office), energy, taxes and other policies and changes that will affect just about every American, has been reduced to a prime time special.
Brian,

I'm guessing you'll need to invest in some new suitcases soon, as the ones you currently own are probably falling apart.  So when do you actually have the opportunity to see your own house again?  I hope for you that it's sooner rather than later.

I pray for the residents of New Orleans that we don't have a repeat of three years ago.  I just heard a report on a local radio station, that the A.C.E. have publicly stated, "the system in place now in New Orleans is better than it was pre-Katrina."  So I'm thinking to myself, "If it was that good in the first place, the whole Katrina ordeal would have never taken place to begin with."  I hope that all are safe and will make it through unscathed.

Best wishes on what seems to be your never-ending trip.  Weren't you in Tehran only a couple months ago?  Travel is so weird like that.

Be safe.  Hope the thin air in Denver hasn't made your time out there even more stressful.

Speak to you soon.
Dear Brian,

Well, all the Clinton haters can now sit down.  Hillary loaded the bases on Tuesday, and last night, Bill knocked it out of the park.  That man is a master orator.  If there were no term limit, and he ran again, I would pull the lever for him until my arm fell off!  (A fact which completely horrifies all my conservative friends!  And, actually, we haven't "pulled the lever" to vote in my precinct in years.  It's just a figure of speech!  Ha, ha.)

"People the world over have always been more impressed by the power of our example, than by the example of our power."

Indeed.  Bill Clinton may have been unfaithful to his wife, but George Bush has been unfaithful to the Constitution, and to the American people.  Maybe Obama, if elected, can be that man who is faithful to all.

Last night's roll call was the beginning of an emotional evening.  I made it home from work in time to watch the New Mexico delegation yield to Illinois, who in turn yielded to New York.  What a powerful image it was to see that state's delegation march in together, led by Governor David Paterson, Senator Chuck Schumer, Representative Charley Rangel, and my girl Hillary.  I was actually moved to tears - not because history was being made with Senator Obama's nomination, and not because I was disappointed that Hillary was doing the right thing.  I accept the vote of my party, and the vote is for Obama.  No, I was moved by the genuine feeling of camaraderie and affection amongst New York's delegation, and specifically, for Senator Clinton.  I felt their pride in her, and joined them in their sentiments.  It was a terrific moment.

I've been meaning to ask about the house band in the convention hall.  Whoever they are, Brian, you should have THEM on your iPod!  They are fantastic, and I have really enjoyed the song selections - Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" to close out the evening?  Maybe tonight they'll play a little Kool & the Gang.  Great music is never cliche.  They should install a dance floor and a disco ball!

And, seriously, if you add to your iPod rotation sometime soon, perhaps you should consider Michael Buble's "Home."  :-)

All the best to you!

Lots of love to the regular posters:  Lisa, Jackie, Stephanie (33 until Monday, right?), Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.  XOXO
Thanks for clearing it up!  The rumor mill was running at full speed over at BTX  ;)
Brian,
Can you challange Obama and McCain to run a positve campaign rather than the old get over on the other guy.  Why not make all kinds of history. Imagine then next president elected on his integrity and honesty!!!
I have been a dedicated reader of the Portland (ME) Press Herald since I was in grade school.  It was the Evening Express (RIP 1991) that got me so hooked on news and politics.  My mom wonders where I got the news bug since neither of my parents cared that much about it!  The Mexico City Earthquake of '85 was my first big news event that I remember paying attention to and I collected all the stories I could find of that story for weeks...then came the Challenger disaster.  You know, I'm still clipping news stories even as my (grumble grumble 34th) birthday is on Monday.  I will be devastated if we loose it.  I've been biting my nails for months now that we won't loose it.  I can't afford my subscription b/c I've got serious cash flow issues these days.... so Brian, if you're going to support my favorite daily newspaper, maybe that will be enough?  :)  I can only hope!

Something else I will not miss: tonight's historic convention end.  I got a call from the Maine Democratic Party this evening and was asked if I'd watch.  I had to reply: "how could I NOT watch tonight?"  This is such a big, big night for our country, no matter what side of the else you sit.  It was destined to be a historic night, and I am sure it won't disappoint.  It's just up to Senator Obama to impress me enough with his speech that he sways my vote.

God please save the Gulf Coast.  My dad used to joke that California would fall into the ocean... however if Gustav hits it, it just might be Florida and Louisiana that fall off first.  My thoughts and prayers will be with all its residents this weekend for safety and protection.

Is it really Labor Day Weekend this weekend?  How can it be - we hardly had a summer up here!  *sigh*  Happy Thursday to the regulars.... I hope all of you have long weekends coming up!
This last convention day looks like Woodstock, Lollapalooza or Live Aid but only in a stadium, and not like a political convention where there are serious issues at stake. There is music, preachers and speeches. Just like in the old days. Give me a break. Does the United States of America needs a main-event rock star Barack Obama, or as he is know today as Barackus Obamaximus?

Certainly not.
I have followed your coverage mainly because of Brokaw/Williams. But since Tuesday night I have switched more often to our PBS station as they are actually covering the convention events rather than merely having their correspondents talk each other to death. Oberman and Matthews and "friends" seem to love to hear themselves talk. Count me out.
I am really surprised a mean nothing football game is on NBC instead of the DNC Convention.  What in the world were you guys thinking about.  I love the Nighly News and Brian but CNN has it right tonight.

I have viewed the first page of Mr. Obama speach
and would like to send for him and his campaign a little picture.

Best wishes
Helen
Obama never mentioned Martin Luther King by name. He only said: "A preacher from Georgia" but not "Martin Luther King". It's obvious he wanted to hide his African-American heritage in this speech.

Also he had over-emotionalized and dramatized his speech. Today in a world with so much problems emotions should never interfere with Realpolitik, a politician should be objective and factual even in the most desperate hour. A rethorical question: Will he cry on national television when there's a crisis?

Also the speech was a tirade against George W. Bush, a presidency that is not on the ballot in November. It's John McCain vs Barack Obama in November. Obama should get over the fact that he will never step in the ring with GWB in his entire life in terms of a presidential campaign.

Also that show, reminds me of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. It showed a large propaganda show by a Democratic Party with a Lollapalooza feeling with fireworks, pop singers and anthems.

As journalists in advance set the bar on a low expectation they sure will tell that this speech was the most historical speech in the history of Barack Obama.

Also there was again a over-exploitation of Obama's family. Also after 9 months of primaries and 4 days of convention Obama still needs to air an introductory video and still needs to cite his life during his speech. Is it a sign that he can't sell his life to the American people.

Also as hypocritical as usual he said the campaign wasn't about him (Obama). He always said: "I have a funny name (Barack or Barry) and (Obama) wouldn't fit". "I worked in inner-cities at the South-Side of Chicago." For the fuller extent the campaign was 1,000,000% about Barack Obama and not about the voters of the United States of America. The whole campaign was personality tour of a previously unknown Senator from Illinois.
Please let somebody else, besides Keith Olberman, anchor your political coverage. I like his show, and he's good in that setting. But he's so gushingly partisan that it doesn't serve you well. I despise Fox News, but found them to be more fair and objective tonight than MSNBC.

You've got a stable of superb reporters--yourself, Brokaw, Gregory, Todd, Mitchell. Please don't let Olberman (who loves, LOVES to hear hmself wax poetic) ruin it for you.
Why doesn't truth travel as fast as a rumour? It brings back memories of that party game from childhood we called "telephone" where a story begins and is whispered from one person to another and after everyone heard the story it is said aloud and is Never how the original story was stated.
On to more serious matters...It was encouraging to see this past weeks Democratic convention and the hope and vitality out there in the nation. I hope the Republican convention in the coming week can produce an equal amount of energy for it will make for an energetic campaign season!
Prayers go out to the millions in the path of Hurricane Gustav. Watching this event with a great deal of concern for all in its path!
Brian, thanks for toughing out the week during an obvious, painful time for you missing your Brother.  Seattle misses Tim too.  Keep the faith.
What is wrong with Tom Brokaw? His analysis and comparison is scary. He needs to retire along with McCain. Out with the aged-rich white/racist minded sad Americans who use their power in Politics and News to hurt and keep people back.
Please put Brian in a booth as the background noise was so annoying last night..I thought NBC had learned from being at the hotel during the MLK anniversary a few months ago.

Thank you
Okay... so speakng of rumor, I heard an EXTREMELY odd comment while at the Doctor's office and I wonder if it is a rumor or truth.  Does anyone ever wonder why when Obama is introduced, they do not announce his full name, such as "John FITZGERALD Kennedy, or George WALKER Bush"? I nearly fell out of my chair when the name "Barack HUSSEIN Obama was then mentioned.  If true, do you think after 9/11, Irag and Afganistan, that our country is prepared to elect a leader with the name "HUSSEIN" in it? It would be interesting to see how America might react if indeed this was a fact, and he was introduced as "OUR NEXT GREAT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA....  BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA". Hmmmm...  Personally, I happen to like Obama, but that name sure gives me the creeps. Hopefully it is a rumor, and nothing more!
What is this Gamaliel Foundation thing?
Brian,I have a question of you,do you ever feel like your in the air more than on the ground? I just watched Obamas acceptance speech and I must tell you I thought I saw a glimer of camalot in the distance.Maybe not camalot, but maybe the roundtable or shivalry.I think I saw excalibur removed from the stone. The shell game the republicans are playing with their VP nomination. Obviously a diversion to try to slow down the jugernaught that Obama launched last night.Morning Joe is really the only one and probably Fox is playing the game.I've watched the democratic drama unfold with the Clintons, that was fun and then to pull 84,000 people to mile high at 80$ to park a car,Obamas smart,he'll give them all 20$ rebates for making the creshendo something like a Beatles 2nd awncor.Michele Obama has looked very Jackie O lately.Today I took a framed photo of JFK that My mom bought in 1960 to Obama headquarters to hang on the wall,i'ts the oldest political artifact that I own.Even the bottom corner says color by Fabian Auerbach. After seeing the speech I'm even happier I gave up that treasure. In closing,G-D protect the people of the gulf coast,I don't think I could stomack another Katrina catastrophy.Thank you msnbc political crew & Brian for the sleep deprivation.
I posted a plea for better convention coverage last night, deploring the fact that neither NBC nor a single broadcast company was providing full coverage to television viewers who lack access to cable.               I asked Brian Williams to work with his colleagues at NBC and in other broadcast companies to restore convention coverage to its historic place in television news, and to spearhead an indepth effort to improve television news. We the people need a deeper grasp of the issues at stake, not the back-biting snipes of grossly overpaid demagogues who appeal to the baser instincts of Joe six-pack.
Brian, thanks for your thoughtful handling of the convention.

Today's news of Gov. Palin now takes the spotlight off of Denver, as was planned.

I'm from Idaho and have been very involved in birthing the Progressive Conservative movement in this state. With Gov. Palin's connection to Idaho (U of I grad)and her amazing ability to capture the new movement of conservatives, she actually becomes a bit of a poster girl for the Progressive Conservative movement.

Thanks for your coverage of the D's time. I look forward to your time in the Twin Cities. My blog is www.DennisMansfield.com. come visit.

Brian,
I TURNED ON THE TV AND THOUGHT JOHN MC CAIN WAS ON STAGE WITH TINA FEY...NOT JUST BECAUSE SHE LOOKED LIKE A CHARACTER TINA WOULD DO BUT WHAT WAS COMING OUT OF HER MOUTH WAS COMEDIC...OMG!!! This is when we really miss getting a Russert interview going...keep up the legacy, we love you and can't wait to see you on SNL and hope they are SO on this one...maybe she is trying to look like Tina as a brand?!?
what happened to the discussion of Sen McCains choice for VP?  Funny how you regurgitate hour after hour of positive attitude for the Democrats and nothing at all for the Republicans.  I thought as a news anchor your job was to be nuetral and cover both sides equally.  You aren't close.
Great week for the Democrats!  Last night his acceptance speech moving, awe inspiring, and historic.  It gave me chills to see this happening in my lifetime!  Yet, I can not help but think and to ask myself the question that I know has run through people's minds this political season. Which is, What would Tim think?  What would Tim say about this?  I truly do miss his perspective, his insight, and his humor! It was so good to see Luke talk with Matt this week.  Hope he and Maureen are doing well.

OBAMA/BIDEN ALL THE WAY!!!

Marc Schulz, Delitzsch, Germany

If American television and polictics bother you so much... turn the channel and watch your own news.
Hey Brian, how do you feel about O'reillys' comment  tonight! Personally I think he was right on. You and Brokaw both have ben shills for Obamma and O'reilly is the only one who has the b--ls to call you on it.Thank God that there is at least one  network that still believes in telling the truth about what is happening in this country instead in of parroting the liberal Democratic line. More power to the truth!

Jack Pollard

Dewey - If you are looking for gavel-to-gavel coverage, tune in CSPAN.  They are still providing it - and of course no commercials or streamers across the screen.
It would be nice if NBC could remain in a neutral setting instead of slamming how many homes someone may have and then try to add to McCain's tally where the homes are nearly all owned by his wife....now you want to go after his vice presidential pick who happens to have 5 children and run that as part of your breaking news. No wonder all three of the original networks are diminishing today much like the major newspapers in this country. People don't like the way you slant the news and refuse to be fair in the presentation of the daily news. We don't need your opinions.....we all have those......Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw......you are both grown men and it is time to start acting like you have your own pair of testicles. You should both be ashamed of the level to where NBC has plummeted to. You are both responsible for it as well.
Brokaw,Williams and Olbermann. The past, present and future of NBC News. Simply can't wait for Olbermann to kick you out of the chair. Gee will the coward Olbermann even have the balls to interview a Republican? My guess is he will find some lame excuse and not even show up.
Brian
Very disappointed re: the way NBC and MSNBC bias reporting during the primary and now the presidential race.
If NBC/MSNBC is for Obama, then work on his election team. I expect fair reporting on both candidates/parties, disgraceful journalism. I'm no longer watching your stations and I have been a long time viewer
