Fallen but not forgotten: 'They're at risk as well'

The deaths of 10 French soldiers last week in Afghanistan is a reminder that Americans aren't the only ones fighting and dying in that increasingly violent war.

Our allies from 22 other nations have suffered 24 of the 42 casualties so far this month and 364 of the 944 casualties since the war began in 2001.

"Everyone's got a chance to get attacked," MSNBC military analyst Jack Jacobs said, "and everyone's got a chance to attack the bad guys."

Generally speaking, Col. Jacobs said, the allied troops aren't as good militarily as the Americans, but they're nevertheless pulling their weight.

"The other countries do want to help," he said in a recent interview. "I mean, after all, they're at risk as well from the Taliban and al Qaeda."

Col. Jacobs expects the U.S. will soon begin pulling troops out of Iraq and into Afghanistan, but he doesn't anticipate a similar buildup of allied forces.

"I'd be terribly surprised if there'll be a substantial increase from any of the allied countries," he said. "Our allies' armies are very small and are not rich with counterinsurgency capability. The preponderance of forces will come from the United States."

I asked a soldier receiving a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Iraq if he believes it's a good time to begin transferring U.S. troops from Iraq to Afghanistan.

Solidier Wounded In Iraq Recieves Purple Heart At Walter Reed Hospital"I would think so," Army Sgt. Russell Broughton II, 27, of Monrovia, Ind., said last Friday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was wounded June 8 by an explosion at his forward operating base in Al Jour, Iraq.

"Afghanistan is where the real fight's at," Sgt. Broughton said. "I think the Iraqis are ready to take care of themselves and try to make their own sovereign nation without our aid anymore."

If more troops are sent to Afghanistan, Sgt. Broughton won't be one of them. Married with two children, he plans to leave the Army as soon as his enlistment is up. He's already served three tours in Iraq, and this is the second time he's been wounded.

Hello Dear John,
Mr. Jacob is a very smart military man and his analysis and expectations have been corrects about these two wars. In my opinion this redeployment will not be useful, because the country will sacrifice too many lives and huge funds for nothing. Historically, no one has won a war in Afghanistan, and this was the reason that the Bush administration changed direction toward Iraq, because the administration thought it would be easier: Mission Accomplished. What need to be done in my opinion is to find an efficient way to fight terrorists, namely effective and cheap.  If I knew that way, I would help Mr. Jacob, but a person like him he can think of many  ways by which a few moving  fighters can be allocated (and rotated) to go after the terrorists.  I have heard Senator McCain once said that he knows how to get Bin Laden. If he can get the head of the snake, the rest must be easier. Best Regards.
My heart was saddened to hear of the French casualties and was heartened to hear that Pres. Sarkozy went to see his troops after the incident.  I thought that was a very classy thing for him to do.

Mr. Mouhammed is right; no one has won in Afghanistan, and if you know your history of the region going back a few thousand years, then you will understand that there will never been peace in that region.  However, chase the bad guy we must, and I am grateful for men like Sgt. Broughton who continue to enlist, serve more than one tour, and are willing to give of themselves for ME.  I wish Sgt. Broughton the best once he is able to retire from the military, and God bless his family!
I would hope that Col. Jacobs is not including the British trops in his rather ill phrased remarks that foreign troop aren't as good militarily as their American counterparts in Afghanistan.  Whilst US politicians are quick to remark that the Americans are 'best in everything'I'm afraid that sheer numbers of soldiers on the ground does not equate to superiority in terms of quality or professionalism. No disrespect intended which I assume also applies to Col.Jacobs.
Best wishes and thanks to Sgt. Russell Broughton II for his service to our nation. I hope he enjoys many many happy years with his friends and family after separation from his military service. Well done.
I disagree with the previous poster Mr. Mouhammed. What's the saying??? There is a first time for everything~ in regards to war in Afghanistan. I guess it depends on your perspective of and the definition to victory. There will never be a cheap way to fight terrorism. It will be one of the costliest endevours we have undertaken in monetary terms but more importantly in terms of human loss. This foe is determined, smart, and believes they have right on their side. The next President of the United States will have their work cut out for them! Once more, to all the men and women of our military~ Thank You. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Mr. Williams,
I have a very important issue to talk about here. Barack is NOT 100% black.,.,.why would this be such a historical event? It is overkill, and if you want to get right down to it, a wonderful man , Abraham Lincoln , yes a white man, freed the slaves LONG befor MLK came on the scene. Barack needs too and so does the country, acknowledge his white side as well. Ty Kathy A. Lau
