China was fascinating, and the Games were fantastic -- but nothing beats coming home to the United States.

I said this a few days ago and I'll say it again, because it happened again: while we're tough on the airline industry these days, our experience on United Airlines en route to China and en route home was enough to restore one's faith in the commercial airline business. The usual caveats apply: United was the official carrier of NBC folks for these games, and yes, there was a clear effort to take good care of us. But last night on our last leg home from Chicago (where we cleared customs from Beijing), I've never seen flight attendants work harder to treat all passengers with the same respect and level of service. The same could be said for both of our China flights.

And when we got to O'Hare, we met the incredible ground supervisor Joe Sterkowicz, who made sure all the bags got to where they were supposed to go, and gave us his personal guarantee. He's a great Chicago character. He loves his great city, United Airlines, and the Chicago Bears. He also seems to love what he does, and his customers, because the greeting we received from him, and the level of personal service, were the stuff of a United Airlines commercial. I say: Joe Sterkowicz for CEO.

Everyone we met at the airport mentioned Chicago's Olympic bid, and how badly they want the Games. I'm pulling for them -- what a spectacular event that would be. We were in Chicago just long enough to watch a little local news on our station WMAQ, so I could see all my anchor buddies on the air. Sadly, we also saw the first video of the Spanair crash as well.

Sadly as well, on the broadcast tonight we will remember Ed "Too Tall" Freeman, a Medal of Honor recipient from the battle of the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam, whose death leaves us with just 101 recipients still living. Ed was a classic character -- a chopper pilot in Vietnam who knew no fear -- and so many men are alive today because of him. Pilots will appreciate these numbers: Ed had over 18,000 hours in choppers (1,000 of those just in Vietnam) and over 8,000 in fixed wing. Veterans will understand these numbers: two years in the Navy, 23 years in the Army, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, one Bronze Star, one Purple Heart, and the Medal of Honor. Ed was 80 years old.

Dear Brian,

Great reporting in Beijing by you and the entire NBC team.  The reports about Chinese culture were fascinating, as was the most recent report done by Richard.  I am a big fan of his work.  I've learned more about the Middle East situation from his books and his documentaries, than I have learned taking foreign affairs classes in college.

Are you trying to "pump up" United after their recent announcement they would no longer be serving free meals in coach on their Trans-Atlantic flights?  I personally have never been on any remarkable United flight and only fly them because my company requires me to when I fly to Kuwait.  But at least they are still serving free meals on the flights to Kuwait, so I'm not totally out of luck!

Get some rest before convention time!

Good to have you home Brian and as for your treatment by the Airlines let's hope it wasn't just Show Time at the Apollo. Same oh same oh here in the US since you've been away.I'm at the shore and not getting a tan I don't need it, while I wait for Obama to announce Hillary as his VP. Ok I know you've heard me before but I'm just one of those people who never give up.

Russia is testing their power and it just might work. I was wondering what Russia was up to they have been very quiet for such a long time.

See you at 6:30
Brian, welcome back :)  I hope you and your crew are readjusting to the time zone OK!

Indeed, Chicago is a great city, and I hope, for their sake, that they get their wish. It would be great to see them profiled every day!

Good to know that United is still flying high; for all the troubles in the industry, I know that the people who all of us meet .. the crews, the folks on the ground .. are the people who really make it work as best they can.

I'm looking forward to seeing the broadcast!
Dear Brian,

Welcome back.

I am so upset about the high school shooting in Fountain City (Knoxville) Tennessee.  Central High is my parents' alma mater.  It's a little over two miles from my grandparents' house, where I spent many a summer vacation.  It's a mile from the church in which my parents were married, and a mile from the assisted living facility where my grandmother now lives.  This is not just another high school shooting.  (And how have we reached a point where this is commonplace?)  My sympathy goes out to the victim's family, and to the children who were witness to this horrible, senseless act of violence.  Here's a link to the Knoxville News-Sentinel's online coverage:

http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/aug/21/family-friends-say-victims-tough-exterior-hid-gene/

Lots of love to the regular posters:  Lisa, Jackie, Stephanie, Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.  XOXO
Were your flight crew wearing their anti-CEO wristbands (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-thu-united-wristbands-uauaaug21,0,1516948.story )?

I'm glad they're still chipper, given that it's been less than a year since reports surfaced that the company apparently tricked them out of their pensions (http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2007/10/04/united-taking-a-flier-with-pensions.aspx), and even less time since their employee union took the airline to task for paying investors before reversing their staff paycuts (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7133635.stm ).
Brian,

A huge welcome home!  Glad that you are safe and sound.  Now go home, enjoy your family and get some rest.  Great job and as always...thanks for doing a fantastic series of broadcasts from Beijing.

Speak to you soon.
P.S. - To Elmo from Alabama:  I am in no mood for your "sense of humor."  I, and the rest of the "regulars" on this blog, will continue to send wishes to whomever we want.  It's not hurting you in any way, so I would appreciate you leaving your sarcastic Three Stooges reference out of it.
Thank you, Freeman Family, for sharing Ed with us.
If the Garden State is grinning ear-to-ear, Brian, there is a reason.  Kudos to your fellow New Jerseyan, Captain Christie Rampone, for defying the odds and joining Carla Overbeck and Julie Foudy as Gold Medal-Winning Soccer Leaders.  Monmouth and beyond saw our Red White & Blue shut down the hot Brazilian offense (their 4 goals in the semis were the only goals Germany allowed all tournament) and show that all wounds are healed and smiles abound for the brave goalkeeper Hope Solo.  Congratulations, Pia Sundhage and staff!  Of course we can't confirm, but I bet The Boss and every other famous Jersey product are among those smiling at Rampone's organized leadership.
Keep up the fine work.  Everybody makes mistakes and the best usually admit and correct promptly.  Good luck to you & staff the next two weeks!  Especially and obviously Luke!
Hi Brian,

today was pretty cold day in the world of politics, when Russia announced it would freeze all military operations with NATO. I was a remembrance of the Cold War. I might be only 20, but I was born in the German Democratic Republic - a country no more existing - in 1988, and I know what the Cold War has done to families on the Eastern side of the Iron Curtain. All this situation happened because Georgia illegitemately invaded South Ossetia and commited genocide by killing its own people and trying to be saved from an Russian invasion by Western diplomacy. Thanks Saakashvilli (irony and sarcasm inserted).

Also Brian, what would you think would happen if someone from a television station - lets say NBC - was aboard an airplane and travelled from China to the USA. If they handled the passengers and baggage improperly, wouldn't that be bad publicity, that certainly would be covered by you on television, because you were involved. It's like committing a crime with a police officer aside. You simply won't do it because it would hurt the reputation.

Also as I said the Taleban are based in Pakistan and today showed how much power they can gather there on a territory that - by Pervez Musharraf decree - won't be invaded by the USA when they attacked the munitions factory, killing 63 people. The suicide bombers were Taleban.

Also Rush Limbaugh attacked the proposal of MSNBC in creating a show Rachel Maddow. He said: "A failed left wing radio talk show host with no proven experience in garnering any audience at all, who has more testosterone than "our buddy," Dan Abrams. "He's losing his show to somebody with more testosterone than he has," says Limbaugh. "It's just a shame."
Source: MediaBistro TVNewser.
MSNBC should reconsider wasting talent in not giving Dan Abrams a television and degrading him to a correspondent.
Brian, you should be careful.  There will be much uproar on this blog accussing you (and NBC) of working for United, the city of Chicago, and possibly the airline baggage handlers union!

Looking forward to next week and the convention after that.  Thinking about Tim Russert these days, as I'm sure you are as well.  Do you have any doubt he would know everything there is to know about the dimensions of the stage, square footage of the halls, etc.?  I mean, there might possibly be a connection to something political there, and he wouldn't want to miss it.  And, he WOULDN'T miss it!

I know the team will do a great job, but where is the guy with the white board?
Hey Brian:  WELCOME HOME!  So what's your jet lag like?
No joke - I had to do a double take behind you because I didn't recognize the New York newsroom!

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Freeman's family at this time of loss, as well as to those who love their veterans.  We have lost another gem of an American.

How can you not know how many houses you known?  McCain's inability to answer that question right away is quite telling.  If you own a condo you can live in, you own a dwelling, right?

Poor Florida.  Let's all push in our minds and get Fay to give the rest of the Southeast the rain it desperately needs, but leave just in time to prevent flash flooding.

Don't get me started on vaccinations.  It's one of my soap boxes.  We don't protect our children from them; we try to kill our children by blowing out their immune systems as soon as they are born.  I'd vaccinate my kids... but not at birth.  My best friend hasn't vaccinated her toddler yet; they are waiting for her to get older before they do it.  She's done lots of research and quite frankly, listening to her talk to a CDC surveyor on the phone last week, she had more information than the caller did.  The surveyor couldn't respond to most of my friend's concerns and didn't have most of the information from the CDC that my friend collected.  I smell a rat here!

Another soap box of mine... bankruptcy legislation.  This economic climate just goes to show that the majority of filers aren't trying to get out of their bills; they are genuinely suffering.

The story on the Spanair crash reminds me of descriptions coming from Flight 93 of that fateful day.   My heart goes out to the Spaniards and those who are grieving losses from this disaster.

This football lover mourns Gene Upshaw, too.  I don't recall watching him play, but any football great is tops in my book, specially if to him its all about love of the game.

Happy Thursday to everyone!  Hard to comprehend that August is almost over!
Hello Dear Brian,
Senator McCain knows how many houses he has. He also knows their market values. However, we do not know his property taxes, but some will bring us the amount very soon. The Senator knows how many wars we will have to fight when he becomes our president. He also knows how many soldiers he needs for these wars. This is why he wants to bring the draft again. The Senator seems to be an essential member of the leisure class. He will always defend the interest of his class. If you take a serious look at what he has been stating, the beneficiaries of his policies will be the military industrial complex and oil corporations.  The rest of us will be the losers. This is why his economist thinks our problems are mental, but seven homes are not mental, My Friends. At any rate, let us keep drilling more to find some elitists and war mongers such as Senator McCain! Best Regards.
Jason - I believe NBC has hired Luke Russert - let's hope he has his Dad's whiteboard.

Joan
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Great to have you back in New York! WELCOME HOME MR.WILLIAMS!! Nice to see you back in New York safe and sound! Good to know you had such a wonderful flight and everything was handled so well. Now on to the broadcast! The report from Mr.Sanders concerning Tropical Storm Fay certainly showed how this storm just sits in one place and pours more and more rain down on Florida. I really hope all the residents can return to their homes soon. Seeing all the homes surrounded by water and the roads being impassable did not appear the water is going anywhere. It would be nice if some of that rain made it to the northern part of Georgia especially over Lake Lanier. Our State could use the moisture of a tropical system to fill up the lake according to the local weatherman on the NBC affiliate.
On another note the violence in Pakistan is horrible and after Musharraf resigned recently. Too many lives lost to the suicide bombers. I really wish there were no more people that caused these incidents because innocent people are always caught in the middle.

The report concerning the Spanair crash in Madrid showed how the families and friends of the victims are in trauma, disbelief and angry over the sudden crash and all those children lost is so very sad and heartbreaking. I feel so very sorry for all the families who lost loved ones.
So very sad the passing of Ed "Too Tall" Freeman a Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam war. He saved many lives while being a chopper pilot and was a true hero. We honor him and all the living 101 Medal of Honor recipients. A great group of men.
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Welcome Home!
Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Look forward to more of your reports! Always great reporting! And Handsome!
XOXO
Dear Brian and the rest of NBC,
I am so sad that the network just can't keep up.  I just turned on the nightly news, hoping to hear an update on the death threat letters received by John McCain's office in Denver.  When you said, well the real news is about John McCain, I sat down to listen.  Imagine my surprise when I heard that the critical story was that Sen. Obama believes it is critical for the public to know that Sen. McCain may not know exactly how many rental properties he has.  Where are your investigative reporters?  There is no reason  not to have had this story on the Nightly News!  Thanks for great reporting from Bejing!
Brian, you just said "bay zhing"!  What happened to "bay jing"?
Dear Brian:

Loved your coverage of the games, as I admire your coverage of everything!  Look forward to you covering the Winter Games 2010 in Vancouver!
Hey Brian,

So glad you made it back safe and sound.  It's always nice to get home.  I'm like Laurel, I couldn't believe the breaking news today, I saw in online at work about the school shooting in Knoxville TN - one dead I think it said.  How frightening, and then to read that they knew each other and it was not some random thing.  It's really sad when you're kids are not even safe in school.  Do we need metal detectors at all schools now?  How sad a commentary on our society and I can't help but think this is related to our Pro NRA society.  They don't have these handgun related deaths anywear near as much in Great Britain.  Laurel, so sorry to hear that it hits so close to home for you.  My folks are from Kentucky, so we've always had a big rivalry with Tenn. - Go Big Blue!  but at times like this, those things are forgotten.

Have missed catching up with all of you lately.  Football Practice season has begun - every night from 6 - 8  and so my life is not my own nowadays and I've even been missing the National News! Horrors!  But I do go back and look at parts of it online and read the notes from Lisa McNeil and feel like I saw it:-)  Anyways, off to the beach next week, way down in NC to Holden Beach - for the last week of summer! Can't wait...But I will miss you guys then too:-)  No computer there....oh well, I will have my Nightly news fix there.  Bye for now~
Anna-- We did our job:  wooed the kids into science, taught them well and rigorously. Many won Science Fair medals, went to college as science majors, many on scholarship, however upon college graduation they entered that street of dreams across the river. $$$
What can I say? Frustrating...

Stephanie-- Just make sure your friend gets her child vaccinated against measles. Damn near killed me. I got it as an unwanted present at my 4th birthday party. Last birthday party I ever had! And I'm not kidding--I almost died.

Take care all--

P.S. Welcome back Brian!
Hey Brian! Great job reporting in Beijing by you, and the entire NBC team. I truly enjoyed all the moments of these games and took in every moment of NBC Nightly News these past two weeks. I loved learning about the Chinese culture, (especially your walk through "Old China") and seeing the interviews with our USA Stars. Great job to all of you and I can not wait for the Winter Games in 2010.

It must be great for all of you to return home. I feel that the rest of the world is amazing and great to see. And even though the United States has its share of tough times and difficult choices, there is truly nothing like coming back to a land where you do not have to worry about gymnastic camps at 3, and being silenced during events. After all, that is what makes our country great.

I feel terrible about what has happened in Madrid, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families in this difficult time.

I look forward to more Nightly News as we turn away from a great world event, to the future of our country in this election.

Thanks Brian for delivering us a remarkable experience. Welcome Home!

P.S Great way to end the night taking a look at NYC in all its glory.
Hi Brian,
You sounded so very happy to be home.....if only for a short while. Denver and St. Paul will be minor compared to your flights to China and Europe/Iran. It will be a facinating time as well for you.

Just a couple of comments .... When you were telling Michael Phelps how good the double cheeseburger is in Beijing, because it didn't have mustard on it, I had to laugh because my husband doesn't like mustard on his burgers either and yet he loves it on hotdogs. He says "that's where it belongs" :) It must be a New Jersey "thing"
I am pleased that my fellow Canadians treated you well at Canada House. Have you worn your Canada T-Shirt yet? Maybe you should pack it for an up-coming trip and really confuse everyone.
I was at the hospital a few days ago with with my mom. As I walked throught the emergency area, on one of my trips outside, someone asked the security guard if the TV channel could be changed to the Olympics. The guard got up and changed the channel. Martha Stewart was gone and the Olympics were on. We weren't in Syracuse! That made me smile in what had been a tough week of spending day after day in a hospital room with my mom. Thanks Brian for informing us,enlightening us and keeping a smile on our faces.
I'm sure that I speak for many people who just never get around to telling you this.

Oil went up $6 a barrel yesterday.

Freddie and Fannie needs another 200 billion.

Russia wants it's territories back under her control.

Food prices are soaring along with all the other essentials.

We are consuming God knows what when we eat that high priced food.

Health Insurance has moved to the luxury list.

We are still spending money on foreign aid while we are begging other countries to float us a loan because we are broke.

Our legislative body created all these domestic problems.  Then they just set around and complain and point fingers.

I think I will spend a little time in my clothes closet with the door shut.

I think I will grab the "Adventures of Tom Sawyer" on the way and turn the light on so my electric bill will be higher next month.

Oh yes, welcome home Brian.    lolololol
Dear Brian,
I was fairly shocked and disappointed that you chose to report on the death of a sports star rather than Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones -- in an election year, especially, when the quality of our nation's leadership merits prime time attention.
It doesn't matter how many houses McCain's family owns. He doesn't preach class warfare like the true "dividers" in this country. Besides Cindy is only worth 100 million dollars. That's less than the "better off now than they were 8 years ago" Clintons. At least her family provided a useful service to America.  I'll bet Tom Coburn would make the social conservatives &  fiscal conservatives happy. Plus he's a Statesman. Something that's in short supply in this sorry 9% approval rating democrat controlled congress.
Bravo to NBC on reporting from Beijing and covering the Olympics. The NBC Nightly News changed how I viewed China. What a fascinating country. The Olympics were great but each night, the high point was watching Brian Williams deliver the  stories with interest and his touch of humor. Let's see if the Democratic Convention can be as interesting and educational. That is a tall order.
Disappointed in Nightly's coverage on Wednesday of tropical storm Fay.  Ann/producer gave it about 15 seconds and then Ann came out of the video saying it is raining in Beijing too.  People in Florida are suffering and it was hardling a mention.  Was insulted by the rain comment in Beijing.  An evening shower is nothing compared to 20 inches of rain and flooding.  For shame!
@Bill - I don't think the comparison was intentional or that Ann Curry intended to be flip, though the juxtaposition was certainly unfortunate.  The rainfall in Beijing was degrading the audio quality on the outdoor set of the broadcast to the point that the producers probably felt it required mentioning after each commercial break, lest people start adjusting their sets and calling in with complaints.

I have friends who produce for network news, and believe it or not, people call and email to complain when a war correspondent's hair is out of place - sad, but true.  I agree with your point that the comment didn't come off well, on the air, though - which is unfortunate.  I hope you and yours are holding up in Florida.  It's been terrible to hear about all the destruction Fay has caused.
The chinese government is not our friend. They torture and rape their citizens for believing in  a religion they deem unacceptable on a daily basis. This NOT just about the atheletes. There is much more at stake here. And when we ignore the atrocity's being committed so we can participate in the olympics we are condoning them!

President Bush is apparently good friends with the chinese presidents family, his friendships with other world leaders family's are just as disturbing, Putin, and tha Saudi royals. It's disturbing because it seems he's friends with the ruling family's of all the countries which we are enemies with.

If I didn't know better I'd say he's one of our enemies.

The day after 9/11 after Osama BinLaden helped to plan and orchistrate the most infamous terrorist attack on U.S. soil Bush pardoned the parents of the son responsible.
Out of loyalty to the ruling family of a country whos idiology and philosophy is in direct conflict with our own constitution.

The BinLadens son helped mass murder 3000 of our people and he let them go instead of detaining them. Any other parents of a son responsible for that would have been detained and arrested and kept. But they were allowed to go free.

George W Bush is not our friend, he does not care about America, only about profiting from its demise.

Hes friends with all our enemies because he is one of them.

Who's he gonna start a friendship with next?
The president of North Koreas family?

Had we boycotted the olympics the world would have followed.
Its a disgrace!
Shame shame shame on you .... why weren't you doing any reporting about what China is doing to its people and the mistreatment and imprisonments taking place. SOMEONE needs to be speaking up for the people that aren't allowed to and get jailed and drop out of sight if they try to speak out!!!!!!!
Coverage was way too one-sided.
I work for United Airlines at O'Hare and if I were to tell you that we were not advised to take exceptional care of our NBC and the US Olympic Team, I'd be lying.  However, as an employee I can tell you that the employees of United DO truly care about their customers and love what they do.  Every day we try to do our very best for the customers while dealing with being short staffed, using equipment that is outdated and/or in ill repair.  With wages that have taken a beating and self esteem that has taken a beating as well, the employees of United are trying to do what they love while fighting all of these issues.  Air travel is not perfect by any means, often times it isn't close to being predictable.  Our job is to make the bumps in the road (or air) as gentle as possible.  If any of you travel through O'Hare, whether you are an athlete, celebrity or media personality you will be treated as a valued customer.
I do not work for United Airlines, but Joe probably needs to be the CEO and could probably do a better job. I live in Chicago and know how the United employees have for years given concession after concession just to keep their jobs only to see their salaries and benefits shrink long before other sectors to felt the crunch. I'm glad employees contnue to provide such great services while their CEO received huuuuge bonus for doing his job.  Yes, you did get preferential treatment from Joe.
Also, your staff looked like kids in a candy store in China and forgot about all of the governmental abuses.
Very disappointed that such an established figure such as yourself, one who honestly can command respect, did not do more to bring about the truth with human rights and China. You have, unlike hundreds of millions of people, the ears of so many. You should use your platform to bring about change, not ignore the truth.
