By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

Watching and being around Michael Phelps last night reminded me of covering and interviewing presidents in one fundamental way: the aura of fame, importance and popularity – the palpable feeling of building anticipation — the people positioning themselves along the "route" he's expected to take, the blur of his arrival accompanied by flashes and shouts and the surge of the crowd, and then the total vacuum when he departs a given space...and it’s all over. Yesterday, there was indeed an aura around him, and an excitement – a feeling in the atmospheric bubble wherever he traveled – that was the unmistakable marker of the biggest global celebrity of the times. His entourage was actually rather small, comprised of coach, manager/PR guy, and his family. His height (6-foot-4 inches) helps call attention to his every move. His head — at times eerily backlit by the camera lights — lit his profile wherever he travelled.

His draw is undeniable.  We learned today that nearly 40 million people were watching NBC at 11pm last night.  In an on-air chat with the anchor of WNBC in New York last night, I predicted that the evening might be "the first stay-at-home-and-watch-TV Saturday night in the modern era," and I might have been right.  NBC's broadcast average (over the whole evening) of 31.1 million viewers represented the best Saturday night viewership since the "Golden Girls" spinoff program "Empty Nest" debuted before 31.4 million viewers on Feb. 24, 1990. Michael Phelps was 4 years-old.

All he wanted after yesterday’s race was McDonalds.  Before our interview, a producer asked him for his order.  He initially wanted a cheeseburger, Big Mac and fries. Then I stepped in (having done the research) and told him that the double cheeseburgers here were good, better than in the States. I told him there was no mustard on them, and that the minced onion was kept to a minimum. I could see in his eyes that he realized he was in the company of a fellow aficionado.  He changed his order  – so  excited at the thought of McDonalds for the first time since arriving here in Beijing —  and the interview began.

Portions of our interview will air tonight, with more tomorrow night. We will post the entire thing on our Web site.  Pay special attention to the conversation about his iPod, and how happy and relaxed he is.  Right now, Michael Phelps has the world on a string and history hanging around his neck.

We hope to see you tonight from Beijing.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, WOW! That Michael Phelps is one Great Olympian! It has been SO EXCITING watching him swim and the relays were so AWESOME to watch! He has been a great athlete to interview and really comes across so nice. What an achievement he has made at these games! I am impressed Mr.Williams on your research about McDonald's double cheeseburgers being so good in Beijing. I bet Michael enjoyed the double cheeseburgers! He deserved any kind of food he wanted to eat! You are an expert in so many things Mr.Williams! Good Choice!
I have been watching alot of Olympic coverage and NBC has done a great job at covering the events. The reports on Nightly News have been so informative. Of course I like the reports by Richard the BEST! Richard has done an EXCELLENT job doing reports concerning these Olympics! And Mr.Holt Too!

Dear Mr. Williams,

why did you lied on the last weblog about Mr. Roker's age? According to the IMDB and Wikipedia, Al Roker, weatherman of NBC was born on August 20, 1954. You said he, you latently stated, was 50 years on August 16, 2008. That is mathmatically incorrect. He would be 54 this year, not 50. Even the date was incorrect. That means, either you lied with the age of Mr. Roker, or Mr. Roker gave you a wrong birthday date to celebrate on? How can such a mishap happen on this weblog?

Source of Age of Al Roker:

This Olympics already broke so many records and it was only logically that Michael Phelps would surpass the historic 7-medal mark that Mark Spitz instated at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. That it would take 36 years to beat that records is only once more a plus to the historic sports figure Michael Phelps.

Last nights Saddleback Civil Forum was an interesting event to watch and unfold. It only showed once more that Barack Obama is a pretty calculating politician who hesitates with answering a question. McCain, as I saw it, answered more spontaneously on the questions asked by Rick Warren. As Tom Brokaw stated on the last broadcast of NBC Nightly News on December 2004: "It's not the questions that get us in trouble, ... it's the answers". How rights was that last night.

Why does Mr. Williams has to promote one of the big sponsors of the Olympics - McDonalds - on that blog. That weblog is not a commercial platform, it's a commentary platform. Advertising doesn't belong here. Also, once more a promotion of the iPod is superfluous.

Today I watched the "Meet the Press" video podcast. David Gregory did an excellent job and he would be a good moderator of that show after the interim moderator, Tom Brokaw, leaves the show after the Presidential elections in November. He was pretty on Condoleezza Rice.
Dear Brian,

No offense to Michael Phelps, but Jason Lezak is my new hero.  Hooray for thirtysomethings!  Woo hoo!

And, in that vein, Stephanie:  Girl, EMBRACE turning 34!  I can't wait for my birthday:  I am so over being 37!  I just want to finish this year out, and start a new one!  I guess most people use New Year's Day as the jumping off point for a fresh start, but I always use my birthday.  (The two dates are pretty close together, anyway.)  Besides, it's not the counting of the years I mind; it's the AGING.  :-)  Hope your cat is feeling better.

Lots of love and happy Sunday to NBC, and to all the regular posters:  Lisa, Jackie, Stephanie, Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.  XOXO

P.S. - There was a resolution, of sorts, to the issue of airlines charging members of our military for their baggage.  Thanks to Hillary Rodham Clinton, among others.

Your interview was excellent.  Just to be able to talk with that amazing fella that has done something that no one else has done.. The drive that he has is beyond anything I have seen in my years of watching the Olympics.. I watched Mark Spitz and that was a wonder but seeing Michael was beyond. Comes from being ridiculed and picked on because of what he seemed to people to a person no one will ever forget.  I wonder where those other people are now? You are our top evening reporter for World News in Dallas Tx. How lucky you have been to be there with all that excitement...
Thank you so much for being who you are..
May I have a moment to vent.....................

I have been staying up night after night to watch Phelps and that sleek swim.   I have been dragging myself out of bed with 6 hours of sleep each night.  I have been salivating to know what is on his IPOD.   I even revolved my wonderful dinner around this 6:30 PM interview and low and behold no NBC NN in my neck of the woods!  Ug...I get so frustrated with this NBC broadcast during sports season!  Okay,  I got that off my chest!

Stephanie, all the kids were talking about at Sunday school at my church was Phelps.   Most of them had stayed up late.   We covered the lesson and then talked about staying fit, having goals and living a good life.   Phelps has become a real legend for adults and children.

Bests to all including Mama Phelps!   I hope the webcast goes up quick tonight!
Why does Brian wear a tie here and not in China at the Olympics?
Mr. Williams,

I heard you say that Bruce Springsteen mentioned news of Michael Phelps's 7th medal victory and dedicated Born in the USA to him at his concert on Jacksonville, Fl. I was at that concert and I can absolutely tell you that Born in the USA was not played at the concert (I can provide you with an official set list if you wish.) I'm also pretty sure he didn't mention Phelps, though I may have missed that had he done it quick enough.

I would appreciate if you would acknowledge receiving this and making a correction on air. I am huge fan of yours, but an even bigger one of Bruce's. Your inaccuracy really bothers me.

Thanks,

Jim
Where did the information that Bruce Springsteen announced Michael Phelps had tied Mark Spitz record & played "Born in the USA" in Jacksonville, FL come from?  We were at that concert & that never occured.  Bruce Springsteen never made any announcement ... and he never played "Born in the USA".
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Great broadcast from Beijing! First of all the interview with Michael Phelps was great because he is so nice to listen to about all his winnings. Such a monumental achievement winning 8 Gold medals! The relays were so exciting and his teammates did a marvelous job in their legs of the races. It was amazing to see the fans at the Ravens game staying and cheering Michael on to his win. Michael certainly made the swimming events exciting! Congratulations Michael!
On another swimming note the report by Amy Robach about Dara Torres was another inspirational piece about a woman who achieved two Silver Medals at these games in swimming. I agree with her there should be no age limit on ones dreams. Congratulations Dara!
The piece by Mr.Holt about the chinese student now a Harvard graduate who participated in the uprising in Tiananmen Square was sad to hear. He is passionate about reforming China and I hope he can return to his parents. His parents are coming to an age where they may not be able to travel and I really hope their son can return to them soon.
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. You have done a wonderful job broadcasting from Beijing! All of the NBC reporters and crew have done a terrific job!
Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Safe and Well Richard! Excellent reporting from Beijing!
XOXO
Brian,

Fantastic interview with Michael Phelps.  Congratulations to him.  His mother must be the proudest woman on Earth right now.  And what a privilege for you to be able to talk to him.

We here in the suburbs of Baltimore can't wait for him to return home.

See you Monday night on the broadcast.
Dear Mr. Williams,
Can you tell Michael Phelps to say "YOU'RE WELCOME" when someone say thank you? He seems to be "LOST IN WORDS" everytime he has to say something. I know he got a lot of pression going on, and I understand, but you're welcome, no problem, thank you etc...only makes him look better instead of arrogant.
Thank You,
Anna
Great job this evening Mr. Williams!  Michael Phelps is a pretty amazing guy and what an accomplishment he has done but I was curious if you have seen michaelphelpsfacts.com?  It is a pretty funny, clean, and great site about Mr. Phelps.  For instance did you know Scientists recently discovered the cause for warmer sea temperature and melting icebergs happens every time Michael Phelps gets in the water?  Let me know what you think.

Peace
Michael Phelps has stated that he will be taking a little time off from
swim training.  He misses his bull dog.  He wants to get back to Baltimore.  Wow, this guy is too good to be true.  Actually, he is just a guy who allowed himself to dream the big dream and for him it has come true.  How cool is that?  Thank you again for covering the Olympics in such a grand fashion.  I hope that you learned some stuff
along the way.  Thanks to you and Matt Lauer for covering all things Phelps.
NBC certainly slighted the other members of the relay team at the awards ceremony when Michael received his 8th gold medal.  Don't get me wrong, I'm proud and excited for Michael, but it took the whole relay team to help get him there, and the camera should have shown the other memebers of the team as well during the anthem. Their family and friends would probably have liked to see them on the podium as well as Michael.  I know I would have liked to.  We'll be seeing a lot more of Michael, but I feel the others were wronged.

I think that NBC has made fine stooges for the Communists. In fact - the Chinese that control the Media - are admiring the "Effort" Brian.
Let me make sure I've got this straight.  Several weeks before the Olympics began, NBC complained bitterly (both on the air and off) about internet censorship by the Chinese government.  Certain web searches by reporters in China (like "Free Tibet" or "Falun Gong") yielded a response of "results unavailable".  Well, wouldn't you know it, NBC refused to print a comment I posted on yesterday's Daily Nightly message board.  My comment was related to Nightly News, contained no profanity and attacked no one.  But they wouldn't print it.  I guess when the Chinese government does this, it's called "censorship".  But when NBC does it, it's called "screening".  I call it hypocrisy.  I thought NBC had gotten past their censorship phase.  Apparently not.

On Sunday's "newscast", NBC devoted almost 12 minutes to stories about Michael Phelps and Dara Torres.  When you factor out the commercials, that's half the broadcast.  Meanwhile, that night they devoted only 2:40 to Hurricane Fay, two scant minutes to the presidential race and a mere 30 seconds to the conflict in Georgia.  Where are NBC's priorities?  I think we all know the answer to that.  Clearly, it is NBC's intent to use Nightly News as a 30-minute commercial to promote their Olympic coverage.  When did NBC News become a wholly-owned subsidiary of NBC Sports?

Which makes me wonder:  When the President of NBC News (or the Executive Producer of Nightly News) informed Brian Williams that for these two weeks, Nightly News would be devoting 90% of its air time to Olympic-related stories, did Brian even offer a protest?  Did he at least try to make a case for reporting all the national and world news even if it meant bumping some Olympic coverage?  I doubt it.  I mean, let's face it--on any given night, Nightly News devotes only about half its broadcast to actual news.  In an Olympic cycle, hardly any real news gets reported.  And that's a shame.

But without a doubt, the most shameless display of hubris was on last Wednesday's Nightly News.  On that broadcast, NBC actually had the nerve to air a story about Olympic commercials!  Obviously, NBC ran that story as a giveback to their best advertisers so they could have a little extra air time without paying for it.  You know, like when a bartender gives a customer a round on the house.  That "story" was just an excuse to splash the Visa and Coke logos across our TV screens.  But that's nothing new.  Nightly News has a history of airing favorable stories as a way of thanking regular advertisers for their business (and as a way of attracting new advertisers).  Who could forget the night last November when Nightly News broadcast from a Chrysler plant in Detroit?  That broadcast amounted to a 30-minute infomercial for Chrysler products.  And--what a coincidence--three months later, Chrysler sponsored an entire Nightly News broadcast.  I guess NBC scratched Chrysler's back pretty good, because Chrysler sure scratched NBC's back.  And then there are the recent stories Nightly News aired in which they attempt to legitimize Restless Leg Syndrome (some doctors claim it is not a real medical comdition).  NBC airs these RLS stories as a favor to their pals (and frequent sponsors) at GlaxoSmithKline, who manufacture Requip--a product that treats RLS.  More back scratching.  So Wednesday's "news story" about Olympic commercials came as no surprise to regular Nightly News viewers.

I can't wait to see what stories Nightly News has in store for us this coming week.  Maybe they'll air a story about the way they air stories about the Olympics.  And how about a "Making A Difference"  segment devoted to Rowdy Gaines?  And why not have Brian read the news while wearing a Nike visor and swigging from a bottle of Coke?  He can pay for those items with his Visa gold card.
Why wasn't my entry published this time? Was it hypercritical to NBC News and or Al Roker? We are in a society of freedom of speech, remember NBC News? Don't do cherry-picking on this blog!
Brian----We were at the Springsteen concert and THIS NEVER HAPPENED.  Hard to know what to believe on NBC News anymore. Many errors on the news show followed by apologies on the blog site.  Please explain.
Jim Ficcaros
Brian I just listen to the interview with Michael, Michael was calm and you were very excited Brian. Michael has beaten Spitz's record but Michael also showed a young man can reach the gold even being raised by a single parent.

I'm on the road but watching the Olympics as I go. I'm going to the Harlem Festival today. I watched the show yesterday in Atlantic City. Yes while your in China I'm all over the place, but I make sure I get to see you at 6:30

Got to see more picture of the President and First Lady at the Olympics. I rest my case, without comment as the photo's speak for themselves.

Laurel thanks for the information about my girl Hillary. I'm glad she's still taking care of business.

Best to my friends Lisa, Laurel, Stephanie, Claudia, Celine, Anne and Matt

ps Don't worry I'll be in NYC next weekend and Peaches and I are going to Juniors.
Dear Brian Williams, On Friday August 15th, you interviewed a woman who is an Olympic Intern, I think, who's name is, Lang Binggrue? Who has a unique way of learning English. She said that she does this by watching you on the NBC evening news. You also noted that she plays an instrument,(that I do not know the name of;) but that she also has a CD available. What I would like to know is, what information can you give me about her and her CD? I could not find anything about this on your Blog, or the web. So I called and asked at NBC'S Transcripts what they might know about this, and so, that is how I learned her name, and then what I saw on your August 15th interview. So again, what ever information that you can give, is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jim Lott PS...Enjoy Beijing and the Olympics!
Thank you.thank you thank you for the excellent coverage of the olympics. I have enjoyed every minute that I have gotten to watch and I am so proud of Michael Phelps. He is the epitomy of what a real olympian  is. He has represented the US well.
Where did you get that info on Springsteen honoring Phelps with Born in the USA?  Someone told me that he reworded his most famous song for Phelps and played Born to Swim,  but I had enough sense not to believe it.
I hate to use this as a platform but I am so upset, I had to. So I've been waiting for watch the two Mexicans compete in the women's 10M diving. I know this will sound insane and crazy BUT the entire time NBC did not show either Mexicans dive. They placed 4th and 5th yet they were not shown at all. Keep in mind other countries like Italy, Australia, Japan who placed much lower were still shown. I can't understand why NBC would completely ignore the Mexicans only. I really don't understand. I mean literally ignored their dives. At one point one of them was in 2nd place but I had no idea cause I didn't get a chance to see them dive. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?
