By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

Good afternoon. Brian is traveling today and I'll be sitting in for him tonight. Okay, next time you hear the flight attendant say "in the event of a loss of cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will drop down...", perhaps you'll think of the story we have tonight on a mid-air scare aboard a Qantas Airlines 747. You might also pay closer attention.

Part of the skin of the jumbo jet broke off in flight exposing a pretty good size hole in the side of the plane, and causing the plane to lose pressure. A passenger whipped out a cell phone and captured video of the scene on board, including other passengers wearing their masks. We'll show you some of Image: Damage right side wing of Qantas plane after an emegency in Manilathat and talk a little about the possible cause.

We'll also have some analysis of those stunning home foreclosure numbers that came out today.

Also, we have a wake-up call for empty-nesters, whose ranks I will soon join. It appears a lot of American parents are still paying bills for their adult children.

Thanks for checking the blog. We'll look for you later on Nightly News.

Curious when NBC will report on the story of John Edwards infidelity and rumored love child.  Surely this is sensational enough to be on your news program.  Or are you summarily discounting the story and buring your head in the sand since you don't like the content?  I find it amazing that you continue to be so blatant in what you choose to report and not report, then scratch your heads as to why you lose market share and have your audience find its news from other sources.
I qoute now Bill Clinton: "Gimme a break, I this a fairy tale?". Why after 2 days at the desk, has Brian Williams decided to take off and let this Holt anchor the evening newscast. I know he is the managing editor but 2 days and then again a weekend-break, this a sign of low work moral. Hasn't Holt and Curry substituted enough the last 2 weeks?

Why did you began and ended last night's broadcast with Barack Hussein Obama, as his full name is?

The good thing is that Brian is off tonight is that NBC couldn't get accused of originating the broadcast along the so-called "World Tour of Rock Star Obama". That takes a little liberal bias off the table. So they have only that Mitchell on the ground of the stop of the self-proclaimed healer of the transatlantic alliance in Paris and London.

So because no enourmous facts Obama found on the trip to France and the UK, you could put McCain more into the limelight of tonights broadcast. I guess, he deserves a chance of being in that position, after the huge demystification of Guru Obama.

Bonjour and Bon Soiree from Germany.
Dear Lester,

Remind me never to fly again.  Qantas was supposed to be one of the safest airlines, wasn't it?  Anyway, I look forward to the broadcast.

To Marc in Germany:  I didn't mean to imply that Andrea Mitchell "outranks" Richard Engel.  In fact, if you created an organizational flow chart, they wouldn't be in the same "chain of command," if you will, because they work out of different bureaus, and cover different beats.  I was a bit surprised to see that she is covering so much of Obama's travels, but that is not my judgment to make.  Anyway, not to belabor the point, but someone out there must have been thinking along the same lines, because I found this item today:

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/msnbc/andrea_mitchell_on_the_air_and_on_the_road_90053.asp

All the best to you, Marc!

To Stephanie:  Point taken about "War Journal."  I just had such a visceral reaction to that particular passage.  If you read Celine's comments on the same subject, you will see what I mean.  She explains it much better than I.  (Celine, you so get me.)  It's just that, in my current state of mind, it was more than I had the capacity to absorb.  But, I will go back to it.  Richard is a superb writer.  In fact, if you have never read his first book, "A Fist in the Hornet's Nest," I highly recommend it.  I do agree with you, too, that our dual wars are essentially "friends and family" wars.  It's a shame.  And, regarding the weather up in your part of the country, I saw on the news this morning that Rhode Island had a tornado touch down, and that their yearly average for tornadoes is....zero.  Scary stuff.

Good night to all the regulars, with lots of love.
Great to see you Lester. I hear that Brian is getting an interview with the President of Iran. Can't wait for the broadcast.
Lester, stories like Qantas Airlines makes me glad I am not a frequent flier!

I never quite saw the benefits of leasing a vehicle.  Maybe because I live in such a rural area, I could never fit in a lease.

Did you hear the one about a homeowner in Massachusetts who killed herself in her home on the day it was going on the auction block and the final foreclosure took place.  Unfortunately, it wasn't a story - it really happened, and the poor husband had no idea they were loosing their home.  She never told him.  On the day he discovered his wife dead, he was forced to move.

My mom has helped me out in the recent past as I struggled with unemployment and disability.  My mom is by no means ready for retirement; she spent her prime years staying home to raise us kids and only went back to the workforce 10 years ago.

Uday's cars likely have blood on them.  I'm sure they are impressive and expensive (hey - even I recognize some of those models!) but I'm thinking they should be sold for scrap to help offset the costs of care for all his surviving victims.

Maybe I've not been paying attention to blog posts once I make them, but gracious.... did everyone get their fill in eviscerating NBC on its coverage of Obama?  For those who feel that McCain doesn't get the coverage he should... you weren't watching local coverage this week when he came to Maine.

I have a hard time learning about John McCain.  I've liked him in the past, but the longer he's in the spotlight with no other rivals running, he comes across as whining to me.  He doesn't like this; he doesn't like that.  I don't hear Obama whining like that.  If that was the only information I had on either of them, Obama would get my vote.

Speaking of whining, after your third post yesterday, Mr. Schulz in Germany, you sounded like you're whining.  I am sure that's probably not what you meant, and I normally appreciate your posts.  Just remember that it does take several hours, even a day, for comments to get posted.  I've had that happen to myself. I'm sure that with all the blogs that NBC maintains on MSNBC, they are inundated with posts and, with particular subjects, even more than usual.

Have a happy weekend everyone!  I will look forward to Brian's interview on Monday with Pres. Ahmadinejad. I certain hope I spelt his name correctly....
Good Evening Mr.Holt, Great to see you this evening filling in for Mr.Williams. First of all the report by Mr.Colt concerning the extravagant and expensive cars once owned by Uday Hussein showed how this horrible person wanted to show off all the luxuries he certainly did not deserve at all. There were alot of nice models mentioned, but somehow just the thought of him owning them makes one sick. That would be some museum if the cars were put on display because they are expensive and well known automakers. A tyrant of a person who will not be missed from all the death and destruction he, his brother and father once caused.
On another note the Qantas plane incident looked might scary with that huge hole in the side of the plane. Seeing the masks come down is not a good thing due to losing cabin pressure, yet everyone remained calm and the crew did an amazing job landing the plane safely in Manila. Most importantly nobody was hurt.
I enjoyed the "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.Taibbi about John Rich who reported for NBC during the Korean War. He really caputured what happened on the ground with the troops and just hearing his voice makes one picture in ones mind what he was witnessing. So many memories and experiences in the photographs because these are still moments and can describe so much. So much has changed due to technology and the information is instant to the viewers. It takes one to another time. Good piece.
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt! See you on the weekend! Looking forward to Mr.Williams broadcast from Tehran on Monday. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Celine,Claudia,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Hugs to you Laurel!
Stay Safe Always Richard!! Maybe I'll see you next week reporting on Nightly News! I really hope so!
XOXO
I'd like to see how all those people who say Obama is getting unfair advantage from the media could explain why NBC did not cover Obama's press conference in France today, except for showing a glimpse to set up a McCain attack on it. NBC found time to, yet again, to run 2 minutes of McCain smear jobs on Obama without any analysis or meaningful response from the Obama campaign. They were mostly the same attacks aired nightly and were not at all newsworthy. Is the pressure out there too much for NBC? We were told all this week Obama would be followed around by adoring journalists. I sure haven't seen it. He didn't get covered at all tonight.

McCain is getting away with stunts that would have destroyed any other campaign. Today, McCain progressed to conceding that we may be able to withdraw from Iraq in the 16 month timeline Obama suggested. McCain started out calling for 100 years in Iraq. Now he's down to 16 months. I remember when just because Obama used the word "refine" in an answer the media went on uproar with stories about Obama flip flopping on the war. John McCain claimed Obama has switched to McCain's position on Iraq. Now McCain has gone all the way down to Obama's position with a caveat and the media says nothing.

It doesn't help the situation that NBC feeds the myth that Obama is getting a better shake then he deserves. NBC declared that the election is a "referendum on Obama."  What that really means is no scrutiny for McCain at all.
Lester I respect the parents who are helping their children as for me my children are caring for me.

I'm glad to hear the bar is set so high for Obama as he tries to be President. For the pass to elections the bar was set so low anyone could have been President. McCain is only to step over the bar as it's on the flood. Makes since that Americans look more closely at a minority candidate or a female candidate. As we've seen Bush didn't have to met any qualifications and when problems were brought up they were covered up. The World has seen just what America means when we say Democracy and Equal Rights. We saw thousands listen to Obama, as Republicans did the best they could to be little his success. I look for the voting machines to be fixed again and Americans denied the right to vote to make sure McCain steals the election like Bush did twice.  This is a true test for the United States as to how far we have moved from our prejudice pass.  We've shown that Woman have no voice even with Hillary winning more votes then all the Republican and Democrat candidates. Bush has allowed the World to see just how much we have fallen and without a fair election they will see how far backwards we have gone.

A friend from Arizona said the State wants McCain out as Senator. Now this should be interesting as McCain is running for President and his State doesn't want him as Senator. The fake polls showing McCain a head in four States is so funny. As most Americans are suffering don't look for those millions of voter to want to stay the Bush/McCain course. If that happens they will lose their jobs and homes. Once Bush brought down the Middle Class Americans that did it for the Republican Party.

I can't wait to see Brian's interview with the Iran President. The Middle East has so much history I would love to visit Iran and Egypt.  I learned so much when Peaches took me to Canada. I saw first hand what it's like to not have to deal with race. I hope Americans can finally just deal with Americans as Americans and not by race or religion. Heaven should be interesting as God isn't prejudice so people are all equal.

I have dear friends on this blog who don't have color their just loving people and I love commenting to.
Thank you Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and Matt plus all the other bloggers on this site.

Have a grea weekend all
Dear Lester,

I LOVED Ned Colt's report on car enthusiasts in Iraq!  It just goes to show, boys will be boys, no matter the setting - raging war be damned.  I, for one, am happy conditions are secure enough for them to indulge their passion!  My "motorhead" boyfriend would fit right in!

Also, thank you for sharing Mr. Rich's images of The Forgotten War.  My father was a Korean War veteran, but he rarely spoke about his service.  A few years ago, I found one of his shipmates online.  It was a very moving and rewarding experience.

So, Mick Jagger is celebrating a birthday.  After all the living on the edge he's done over the years, that's a feat in itself!  God bless him!  My favorite Stones song could pass for an anthem of the times:  "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

Cheers.
Do we have any news about what caused the plane to lose that section yet? Isn't it kind of odd for a new plane to have a problem like this??
