Can black journalists cover Obama fairly?

All this week, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm in Chicago for the Unity Convention. Every four years a coalition of four organizations (the national associations of Black, Hispanic, Native American and Asian American journalists) hold a joint convention. This year organizers expect about 10,000 people.

A few days before the convention began, it was announced that Senator Barack Obama will be speaking here on Sunday. Sunday just happens to be the last day of the convention, when most people return home. So a lot of folks who may have wanted to hear the Senator speak will miss it. Others are scrambling to change their travel plans at the last minute. (Senator McCain was invited but declined, citing travel obligations.)

When it comes to Senator Obama, one issue we as Black journalists face is that of a perceived bias in favor of his candidacy. Many African Americans -- journalists and non-journalists, conservatives and liberals alike -- admit that Obama's success inspires great pride.

So I asked a question of some my colleagues here at the convention: Can Black journalists cover Obama in an unbiased way? Here's what some of them said:

Marcus Mabry, Assistant Business Editor, New York Times and author of "Twice As Good: Condoleezza Rice and Her Path to Power":

"Is a Republican journalist unable to cover George W. Bush? Part of being a journalist is being able to put your personal feelings aside to do your job. According to polls, a plurality of White Americans support John McCain. Does that mean no White reporters should cover John McCain?"

Nicole Childers, Executive Producer, NPR News & Notes:

"I think it's definitely a symbolic victory for all African Americans. I do think it requires us to be extra diligent… in making sure that [the coverage] is balanced."

Carole Simpson, former Anchor, ABC News:

"Yes, yes, of course I feel proud of him. I'm happy and I'm proud that someone has been able to do it. I just hope he can back it up.

"You're a reporter and you have to be objective and you have to be fair and you have to tell the good and the bad of who you're covering or you're not doing your job."

Patrick Riley, Pop culture blogger and freelance producer:

"I think it's quite accurate that Blacks are across the board proud of this moment because it is history. So, hands down, I think most journalists are just that: proud as all get-out. I empathize with those journalists that are bound by their objectivity…because I know they just want to scream and holler. I know they do."

What is a "Digital Correspondent"?  What is your job?
Why is this even a question or an issue. DO WHITE PEOPLE REPORT NEWS ON OTHER WHITE PEOPLE FAIRLY? These type of questions prove to the public how people of color are treated with suspicion and discriminated against by white supremacist even if they are just trying to do their jobs.
Not one person answered the question. They must be politicians in the making.
This is an absolutely ridiculous question! Mr. Mabry hit the nail on the head with his answer. It also reveals, to me anyway, that there is a question of whether or not any reporter can put aside personal feelings and objectively report on a subject that they either support or reject. Can an old, conservative, white reporter do an objective story on McCain? When the question is posed like this, can you see how stupid it is to even ask it? Are Black reporters to be held to another standard than others? The better question should be "Can bi-racial reporters cover Obama fairly"? No...that sounds stupid too.
Can white journalists cover Obama fairly should be the question. Why is that when racial matters arise it is assumed that blacks will respond with emotionalism and subjectivity, while whites will respond with reason and objectivity? Documented history and current affairs demonstrate that whites are not always reasonable and objective in their thoughts, words and deeds regarding the lives of black people. Blacks are blamed for being lazy but feared if ambitious, blamed for being failures but resented for our success, blamed for lacking initiative but limited by the glass-ceiling imposed, and blamed for lacking culture but critized for owning institutions such as the church, colleges that foster and preserve our heritage.
I think this article is so stupid and pointless. Does anyone ask a white person if they can cover a white candidate objectively?  This articles just serves to perpetuate the racial divide.  As a woman I would feel no specific sense of additional pride if a women were candidate for president. Shouldn't we be electing the best candidate for the job regardless of political affliation, race, gender etc. Until we do that we aren't going to see any progress
I believe this notion of 'since America (finally!) has a black candidate for president that suddenly black journalists are at risk for subjectivity' is ridiculous.  No one has ever questioned the majority of journalists, who are white, whenever there is a white candidate for president, senate, mayor etc.  If you want to get formal, Obama is half white, so maybe only hispanic, asian, native american and non-white/non-black journalists should be covering the election.  I have grown very tired of the 'since Obama is black' scenario.  I believe it degrades everyone who is questioned and those who question them.  I would like to think that if any journalist had a hard time remaining objective about a particular subject, that they would recuse themselves and allow someone else to do the coverage.
I would've hoped by now that as Americans this type of "sterotyping" would cease.  We're electing a President - not a "white" person or an "African American."  It's this type of journalism that will continue racist attitudes in America.  Let's cover the issues and not the color of someone's skin.
Sorry Jumphigher you are dead wrong. To every black American supporting Senator Obama, the country is electing a black president.  To many many Americans of other races the country is electing a black president.  To journalists, black and white, the country is electing a black president.  Let's not play games.  This is not about substance, it is about a black man being elected president.
it's funny how people answer a seemingly easy question?... they create another question to avoid the issue... there are plenty of them some are running for election & others for reelection... hhmmm politicians in the making
I presume that majority of the WHITE Presidents were interviewed by either a white liberals and conservatives and maybe a few blacks. But, why does the question have to be brought about now that we have a BLACK candidate running for office. There was really no questions as to why white reporter seemingly bash their own or races of candidates, senators, or other government officials. I know that as a black female I would try to report more of a subjective view, and maybe throw in some boosts for Obama but keep them strictly factual. Instead of some TMZ scud point of view… We need to stop worrying about the color of skin and see who is a better candidate for all American people.
It appears that not one reporter answered her question. They danced around the issue rather than answered it.That leads to another conclusion. "Where there is smoke, there is fire!"
Eddie from Yorktown makes an EXCELLENT point.  These are journalists?  Imagine having them working for you, giving them an assignment, and having them return with something other than what was assigned.  :p
I totally agree this is such a stupid topic to talk about. The scrutiny of Obama is so crazy these days. People are talking about is the media biased towards Obama. Yes he has gotten more coverage but most of it is negative in comparison to McCain. Even when it should be something positive, negative questions are always thrown out there with it.

SO now, the black media is being scrutinized to another standard just like Obama is. Do we question if Sean Hannity covers Obama fairly or does he have bias towards McCain? NO!! Do we ask this same question of white journalists about covering any other white candidate? NO, not that I can think of since I have been on this earth. It's just nuts how far the media is going to try anything in their power to not have Obama in office.
So I guess the appropriate question is "can journalists who self-identify as 'black' cover 'mixed heritage' Obama fairly?"  As much as society keeps labeling the man black, he's not.  He's of mixed race, and identifies as such.
Why can't we all just be Americans...why do we have to have a prefix to our status as Americans.
I’m just curious, are any of you who commented black?  I’m black and I don’t think it’s a stupid question.  In fact I believe it’s a very thought provoking question. Have any of you heard of Tavis Smiley?  Some time ago he expressed his opinion regarding Obama’s decision to not attend the annual “State of the Black Union” symposium. All of a sudden the once beloved  Smiley was being maligned, criticized, being called a hater, jealous etc, all for simply saying : “"I think it is a miscalculation on his part not to appear and a missed opportunity."  it seems that if you question anything about Obama, and you’re black, you’re branded a traitor, a hater, jealous etc.  So I think it’s a legitimate question on several levels:  does the fact that you’re proud of the historical moment, impede, influence your reporting? If you have questions that may be a little uncomfortable for Obama, do you not address them because you don’t want to be viewed as a hater, a spoiler of his bid for the White House.   Due to the historical nature of his candidacy, it’s not just business as usual. And yes, I often wonder if conservative Republican reporters, as well as liberal Democrats are unbiased in their reporting. I also agree with the poster who commented that not one person actually answered the question.

Black Commenter, Criticizing Obama, Causes Firestorm  (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/02/16/black_commenter_criticizing_ob.html)

Tavis Smiley, the bestselling author of the "Covenant With Black America," is in a world turned upside down. He said he's being "hammered," "barbecued," and is "catching hell" from black Americans for suggesting that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) made a major mistake by declining to speak at the State of the Black Union event that Smiley plans to host next week in New Orleans.

Radio Host Says Tavis Smiley May Have Left Show Over Obama Flak
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/04/12/radio-host-says-tavis-smiley-may-have-left-show-over-obama-flak/
Joyner said he thinks Smiley is tired of getting flak for criticizing Obama.“We’re so emotional about this Barack Obama candidacy,” Joyner said on his Dallas-based show. “If you don’t say anything for Barack Obama, you’re considered to be a hater.”
Smiley criticized Obama for not attending an annual “State of the Black Union” symposium Smiley held in February. Sen. Hillary Clinton was the only presidential candidate who accepted Smiley’s invitation.
As a white person who spent several years in my youth as the only white person on an all black baseball team i strongly believe a good black or good white reporter could do a good job reporting on Obama.  The ublic perceptions would be all over the place though.
It is disgusting that this subject would even come up.  White reporters have been reporting on white candidates for years. No one has ever questioned thair sense of fairness or objectivity.  Why is Sen. Obama subjected to such scrutiny?  Its' a shame that, after all these years, African-Americans are still looked at with suspicion.
This article was written by a black female reporter who interviewed other black reporters. Yet, most of the comments from readers are white-bashing tirades, as if this entire question was another way for whitey to get at the bruthas and sistahs, despite conclusive evidence to the contrary: A black woman wrote the flippin article!!!

As a white man, I refuse to feel guilty over my gender or my race. We have accomplished much to much, even with our shortcomings. Deal with it.

As for about 92% of blacks voting for Obama nationwide in the primaries, well, draw your own conclusions.
Why does everyone have to play this racism card.  I am a minority (Hispanic) and I'll tell you up front.  If I were a reporter and if Obama was Martinez I would be proud and I think I would have trouble being objective.  We are breaking into a new frontier. This is the first time that we have a legitimate person of minority background running for President. How can you not be proud and somewhat prejudical towards him???? And by the way this is a Black Woman asking Black Reporters the question.  Are you calling her an OREO????
It is an honest question that takes into account human nature.  All of the idealism aside, think about it honestly.  Until everyone is the same color, it will always be an issue.  I agree that everyone dodged the question with rhetoric, just as all the comments are filled with idealistic bitterness or just plain bigotry.
I think they have forgotten that Obama is both black and white.
The question had never occurred to me (a retired, white newspaper journalist). "Can" black journalists cover Obama in an unbiased way? Of course! As with other journalists of every ethnic, religious and political stripe, the vast majority of professional journalists -- if not every single one -- take pride in working to the required standards of the job.
White people who support McCain don't take a special PRIDE in McCain just because he is white.

The problem of setting up the "Obama Narrative" as a "historic moment in American history for African Americans" is this: what if McCain wins?

If McCain wins, no matter how good his ideas, no matter how deep his experience, no matter how empty Obama's promises are, too many people are going to attribute it to "racism".  There will be all sorts of conspiracy theories, etc.

Honestly, since I don't particularly like McCain or Obama, I hope Obama wins.  Maybe then people can stop making dubious complaints about racism and asking for special privileges (e.g. affirmative action, et al).

When it has been proven that in America, the land of opportunity, a black person can become president just like a white person, then minority special interest groups should stop making the case for taking billions of dollars in welfare programs.
Yes, they can.  However, compairing a white journalist being able to cover McCain fairly is not an equal question.  Obama enjoys 95% + support from the Black community...where McCain has less than 50% of white voters.
What an absurd question! If white reporters can cover white politicians fairly (as good ones have been doing in the US for some 240 years), why can't black journalists cover a black presidential candidate fairly? In any event, from what I've read and seen this campaign season, if anything black reporters and columnists seem to be tougher on Barack Obama than they have on the white candidates.
Unfortunately, race is playing a rather large part in this election.  Let's be honest...if white people were voting for McCain in the same percentages that black people are voting for Obama, what would the headlines be?  We have come a long way, but the color of one's skin still matters as much or more than the content of their character.  Both races are guilty. Until the racial bias ceases entirely, this subject will continue to divide us.
Please note that this question was posed by a black journalist.  The article would be receiving much more criticism if it were written by a white journalist.  Sorry folks, racial bias still exists.
I was struck by something Fuzzy Q. Jones said above.  I will never understand how black churches can be viewed to foster or preserve the heritage of black Americans.  He must be referring in large part to Christian churches and thus he is referring to the religion of the white slave owners.  Therefore the heritage being preserved is perverse and not a true or logical heritage of the decedents of the slaves.  You can't claim that black churches have adopted a different Christianity - they countenance the same 2 bibles as white Christians...you can only admit that Christianity is something that is sold to people by being selectively perverted to support virtually any human activity, any cause, fear or frailty.  Thus has it been for 2,000 years and thus will Christianity always be.
When will this country become color blind?  It should only matter if the person can do the job.
I think there are some black and white anchors
NOT covering the Obama story fairly, and now
I am disillusioned.  I thought we were past it,
but obviously not. I always took people as they
come, but I was naive, and hopefully, as a result,
I am more discerning about people.

I agree with Sen. McCain that Obama is acting as if he is
already President of the United States.  This
"as-if" technique is juvanile and worries me.
Sen. McCain has my vote because he will continue
the foreign policy of Pres. Bush who is the
greatest president in modern history and worthy
of another term.  Gee, I may write in his name.

Phyllis Kunz
It disgusts me that this is a legitimate item for discussion on a major media sight. I have never said "well that reporter covering Bush is biased because he is white and so is Bush." What a disgusting article.
"S" The question wasen't asked by a white person. DUH
This a very valid question. After all, has not black society,in its friction dominated interaction with white
society, not set the stage for distrust and bias? Look at the street scene where bloodshed dominates discourse.
Look at the obvious bias of black witnesses in judging
their own in law cases. More exposure of these (biases)
will, hopefully, bring some light into the gray area.
Are any reporters really telling the whole truth? Does anyone?  Do reporters with a personal liberal bias tend to see and report events to favor a liberal view while reporters who have a personal conservative bias see and report the same events to favor their personal bias.  Do news organizations get reports from many points of view and work to minimize the bias or just rely on one reporter and flavor the story to ensure the report has commercial appeal?
Doesn't anyone find it odd that black journalists overwhelmingly write articles in shameless blatent support of Obama??!!  How many are critical of him and ask the real tough questions? You won't see every white reporter supporting McCain... some do, some don't. The point isn't to say that black journalists are racist - that is not the case.  The point is that they are simply letting their emotions manifest themselves in their writing.  But regardless, it is definitely NOT objective reporting.  The media has had a definite bias towards Obama since day 1. Not only does he get more press, but the press that he gets is always much more positively spun. This is a fact. I am not that easily brainwashed by these huge media corporations - I think on my own and will not let them shove Obama down my throat! If you are fine with a rich executive at some big media conglamorate brainwashing you into voting for a candidate so he can have an "in" into the White House... then you are the one who will have to live with your own lack of decency!!!
The comments that say the question is pointless do not understand a few things.  First of all, the fact that the question is being asked is an effect of the there being a viable candidate who is also a black man in America.  That is one important point to the question.  Secondly, the question *should* be asked because it point out specifically to white reporters that they probably cover whites and blacks differently.  I'm sure most white reporters don't believe that they do, but black people see different coverage so often it is latent and blatant. . . Lastly, let's not forget that the case has been made that Obama has actually benefitted from the coverage he has been getting.
I distrust black and white liberal "journalist" equally I don't care who they are reporting on.
Who are you again? You're ridiculous and so is your question.
I must say, I'm on both sides of the fence on this question.  As I write my response, I'm having difficulty just referring to people by their skin color.

As a white woman, part of me wants to know why would a black covering a black candidate be any different than a white covering a white candidate?

Then I remember that I am part of a minority: women.  My gender, in years past, has been considered an inferior gender, in not so many words.  So did anyone ask this question when Sen. Clinton was running?  Can a  woman objectively cover a woman presidential candidate?  I know women of different colors who supported - and didn't - support her candidacy (I didn't either).

I have no doubt that blacks are excited and energized by seeing a fellow black in such an exalted position.  I know that, while I do not support Sen. Clinton's positions, I was excited & energized by her historic run.  Therefore, I don't see that this particular question is entirely relevant.  I think the larger area of bias is with parties, not colors.  I am must more likely to consider a candidate based on party affiliation rather than color.  Should I choose to vote for Obama, he would also not be the first black I have voted for in my voting past.
Though it would appear that Blacks are voting for Obama because of his "race", one has to take into account the percentages of Blacks that identify themselves as democrat.  That being the case, it is entirely reasonable that Obama would have overwhelming support among the Black community.  With regards to McCane receiving 50% of the white vote, it is primarily due to whites being members of a variety of political parties.  However, white political party membership is generally divided between repubicans and democrats.  Once you get beyond the superficialities of the voting demographics, you will see that is just a matter of political affiliation.

For those who think there has been "whitey bashing", nothing could be further from the truth.  Answering the question with "does anyone question the objectivity of a white journalist covering white candidates?" is not bashing white people, it is highlighting the ridiculousness of the topic question.
As I read through the many comments I struggle with the idea that we have come along way. Racism will always exists because there are people that believe in always wanting the upper hand. A man who happens to be BLack is running for President. I am proud of that fact, God made each of us equal. One day we all will have to give account of our own actions here on earth. Believe it or not. The reporters will do a good job for they know that they also are being watched.
the falsehood of the breakdown between race is a lie!
the real battle is between the rich & poor! the news is only 50% accurate 100% of the time at best.soon as
y'all figure where the real problem is & stop being devided and controlled by the rich, then we can weed
out the problem!
Well if Journalist just did their job regardless of color there should be no problem. Ok we know we still have problems but if Journalist would just look at the person as gray it shouldn't be a problem.
Lets first understand that all of us are bias in some way or another. I could understand that a Black repor ter would be proud and, maybe unknowinly be biased in his reporting. We all crazy if we don't accept the fact that we all, with few exceptions, report with rose colored glasses. The media is full of unabashed liberals and conservatives who proudly admit to it. Our real problem is when we have "reporters" who are so biased and try to pass themselves off as unbiased. Take for instance Keith Olberman on MSNBC. As inteligent a person that he is, he can not present a balanced story on the news, but he cann't admidt to his bias. On the other hand is Joe Scarbourgh, a conservative reporter with an attempt to present both sides of a discussion. This election has lost a great deal with the passing of Tim Russert and I can only hope that we, as consumers of broadcast journalizam, will demand more from those who stand on some soap box and try to "give us the facts".
The juxtaposing of the question by Mabry is not logical.  A white journalist covering a white candidate would not be covering the first white candidate in history, or a candidate with 90+% support from the white community.

The fact is that most black people see this as "our shot" and any black who is not an Obama cheerleader is demonized as an "Uncle Tom" (a silly term to use as a pejorative, btw, since Uncle Tom was the clear hero of the book) or "sell-out" or whatever.

I think the answer to the question is yes for most black journalists, but that doesn't mean it isn't a fair question.

Think of it this way: suppose a white guy was running for the city coucil seat for Harlem, and polls showed he had about 50/50 support among blacks but 90+% support from whites.  Wouldn't it make you a little suspicious of the motives of a white reporter who lived in Harlem and wrote about the candidate?

Like I said, I have faith that most reporters try to be objective, at least to the extent that any human being can divide their personal experiences from their job, but this is a fair question.  Lots of white people are asking themselves this already, so it is better that it comes from a black reporter.  To ignore the issue would only make it more valid.
All of the comments I have read seem to be self-serving. I just wish there was no need in anyones heart to have to  comment about someone that will be n the limelight long enough for EVERY ONE to make an unbiased judgement about Mr. Obama .
As a white person I also think it is a stupid question, but for a different reason. First of all there is no such thing as unbiased news or news network anywhere. So every reporter (white or black or anything else) has a network bias in addition to a personal bias. In fact I think a network bias is a lot more damaging than a personal bias, since it brainwashes large segments of our population. So what if black reporters are biased. There are many other ethnic, religious, economic, political, business, geographical groups that are as biased. Why isn't anyone complaining about those biases.
( jumphigher ) Got it right, this is for all of us and we need to be putting away our personal feelings.
black and white, we need to start working together for a common good and quit blaming.
Can a black reporter be impartial and stick to facts when they have so much invested in the outcome ? what do you think ?
