Backstage in Berlin

In this line of work, we seldom get to watch an event the way most people watch an event. But we do get some unusual views -- like when we had to talk our way into the motorcade through Berlin today when it became apparent that there was no other way for us to get to the Barack Obama speech venue. Like when we got there and took our place backstage, and then looked out and saw the crowd as Obama saw them -- people virtually as far as the eye could see.

As a German journalist said here this morning: from the looks of things, Obama could be elected President of Germany by upwards of 70 percent -- perhaps even President of Europe. The question becomes: what does this scene we witnessed here today GET Barack Obama?

I asked him that very question as he walked away from the surging ropeline here tonight -- his answer, as he indicated earlier today in our sit-down interview, has to do with a message he wanted to impart to Europe and the wider world. It's a very basic question concerning what we witnessed here today: what does it mean?

To recite the basic facts, here's what we know: upwards of a quarter of a million people (crowd estimates will vary and are hard to come by) turned out in Berlin today to hear a sitting American Senator -- the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party for President and the first African American in that role. In the crowd, we saw people from all over Europe and all over the world, crowding forward to touch the candidate, flowing into this city to see him -- along a grand boulevard where Hitler's army once marched -- to witness this speech.

That's what we know. That's what we saw. The Presidential campaign lies ahead back home -- there's a long way to go -- and nothing that took place here will help the Senator during the combat of a tough domestic campaign. Americans, not Berliners, will decide the outcome. Today Berliners came out in extraordinary numbers to see a famous American in their midst.

When we got back to our makeshift office, I looked out the window to see the crowds streaming back into the city, through the Brandenburg Gate, following the event. Senior Producer Subrata De snapped the moment -- she also shot a few frames at both of our encounters with the Senator today.

We'll see you again from Berlin tonight -- Andrea Mitchell will be with me to assist in the reporting of this day in this city.

And please join me in wishing (as we will on the air tonight) a happy birthday to a friend of mine, and a great American hero. John Finn celebrated his 99th birthday today. John received the very first Medal of Honor that was awarded in World War II. You can read his story here.

I've seen John several times this year, and he still has an enormous amount of energy and a fantastic outlook on life. He's a treasure and a genuine American original. If my plan worked, a letter I sent him before leaving for Europe was among the greetings he opened on the big day -- in it, I expressed my admiration for him -- which I proudly repeat here. Happy Birthday, John.

We hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast.

I enjoyed the Nightly News as always.
I have one concern that may have already  been mentioned. I tried to read the comments before posting  but the level of anger in so many of the posts made me feel reading them was wasted time!..Disturbing vitriol.
My concern: It seemed like Kelly O'Donnell's questions to McCain were given to her by McCain's campaign manager.  I also wonder if by riding on his bus/plane she has become an advocate for him. Each time I see her interviewed she sounds like she is part of the campaign rather than a journalist. It doesn't change anything but it does seem questionable.
Don't let up on the Obama coverage no matter how many complaints you get. Everyone knows the whole country is swinging towards the North East Liberal state of mind. Soon we'll all be standing side by side "united" waiting in line for Hugo Chavez to give us a little heating oil or free gas.
To those of you who think there's some vast media cover-up regarding the two rock bands that played before the speech, I have one word for you:  Denial.  Face it, Obama is immensely popular, both home and abroad.  You people really believe 200,000 gathered for a speech just because it came after two no-name bands?  What next, the chants of "Obama!" and "Yes we can!" really meant "encore!" in German?  These are the same people in denial who thought it was the Decemberists and not Barack who pulled in 50,000 in Oregon.  Guess what, I've seen the Decemberists in concert -- there were less than 200 people there.
Whomever people decide to vote for, it's still just awesome to see that many people in Germany come out to hear Obama-rock concert beforehand or not. It's just nice to see the German people look positively on something American. After all that has happened to our country, this is just a breathe of fresh air and a very hopeful sign. Just sit back and enjoy for five minutes!
As a retired old guy (who's watched all of the TV network news degrade into a sewer over the last 60+ years) I get disgusted with all the hidden agendas of you news media people and your (Williams) pumping up of Obama in this news piece is no exception.  I support Obama, but your arrogant WASP demeanor towards the news acutally degrades his position as a candidate for President.  Let Anne Curry or Lester Holt do the interview next time.
Since McCain seems to only have one recent accomplishment we should nick name him Surge McCain. How many surge decisions will he be called on to make?
Apparently I am not the only one stunned by the fact that a Presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate is on a foreign presidential campaign tour. The fact still remains this is an American Presidential Election, something that is not shared with rest of the world. For "SENATOR" Obama this may go down in history as a ridiculous attempt.
To Brian Williams,
I am a 65 year old life long Democrat from California where we are used to life being colored a little different from some other parts of the Country.  I have watched NBC Nightly News for years but lately find your coverage of the Obama campaign too much and have been changing the channel.  Are you being paid for your campaign coverage?  The Nightly News is nothing more than an ad for Obama.
I find his audacity and conceit overwhelming.  On his trip he seems to act like he is already President.
This is one Democrat who will not be voting for Mr. Obama.
hello Mr. Williams-
thank you for such a quality job on your part sir.

ever since i can remember, you are a very respectful person and a true proffesional in your field.

at the very least.

sincerely-

now i am fourty.

my father was chief of police of tehran in the year 1978. he was an honest and god fearing man. he past away when i was eighteen. he must have been the best father in the world. i only remember wonderful memories. i would like to go to iran to visit his grave, and the place that i still remember and call,
mother land. though this the usa is my country.

if obama wins i believe things will be safe.
if mccain wins i believe the opposite.
I find it funny and ironic how loudly the rightwingers on this comment section are screaming about "unfair" and lopsided coverage of Obama by Brian Williams and NBC. Hey folks, with all the whining and accusing you and the McCain camp have been doing about this, we've seen ALL the media scramble to balance out their coverage, AND, they're giving McCain a free pass on all of his gaffes and idiotic statements, like non-existent borders, reversed timelines, etc, while parsing every utterance by Obama. CBS even edited McCain's revision of history out of their interview! Talk about a bias!
So quit your whining! Obama is warmly embraced by world leaders and draws a quarter million Europeans to a speech while McCain fumbles in the cheese aisle and acts pathetic at a German restaurant. Why would you complain and disparage the media for covering an-- if nothing more-- huge and unprecedented series of events? IT'S THEIR JOB! That McCain is a doddering and boring old politician and isn't very newsworthy is NOT the fault of the media!
Mr.Williams:
The non stop images of your awe struck expression and fawning over Sen. Obama, even to your 'me too' suit and tie wardrobe not only reinforces the appearance of presumptuousness on the part of the candidate (he is still a candidate isn't he, or did I fall asleep and miss the election?) but also demeans the honorable profession of journalism. There was a time when the pillars of the estate reported the news rather than orchestrated it.
There is no journalistic credibility to the contrived 'reality show' tour by you and your collegues of the other networks all looking like teenage girls in the front row of a rock concert.
I was just thinking, Barack Obama has this attitude to please everyone, he creates excitment, he may be a world leader someday, he could be the Anti Christ, bring in world leaders, well liked, no experance in leading the USA. BUT COULD BRING THE WORLD TO AN END.
First Senator Obama is criticized by Senator McCain for not visiting Iraq and then he is criticized for visiting.  He is now criticized for being greeted a a 'rock star'.  I guess it's "just politics".  I was so very proud to see the American flags in Germany, of the reception Senator Obama received during his entire trip.  He inspires hope in all who really listen and open their hearts and minds to the possibility of what his presidency would do for America and the world.  Change is good, hope is in the air, finally!
I am very disiappointed in you @ NBC. It is very clear who you all support in the political campaign. You give 80% on Obama and maybe 20 % to McCaine. I think you should give 50--50. It could be why Obama has a lead in the poles. How can you support a man who does not honor the USA flag and for what it stands? You should check into if he is a citizen of the USA Surely this would open eyes!!!!!!! This surely would make a high rated popular news story. My research shows Obama is not realy a citizen of the USA!!!!
I got to this page originally by typing in "McCaine".  Why is it that CNN and MSNBC redirect those who are looking for information on John McCaine to Obama?  Recently when searching MSNBC for information on McCaine I was directed to a page where there were 2 McCaine articles and all the rest were Obama or the Democrats.
