Traveler-in-chief

By Ann Curry, NBC News Anchor

I'm starting to wonder if even President Bush's trips to the war region have ever gotten as much play in the media as Barack Obama's.

All weekend, we heard about it as a top story, and now, with the Senator's arrival in Iraq this morning, the story is playing high today. And with interviews with all three network anchors this week, the coverage has long legs, a rarity in news these days.

Public curiosity about this candidate's readiness as Commander-in-Chief, as well as the news he's making along the way, is driving a lot of this attention.

There are memorable images we will show you tonight of Obama and General David Petreaus, one showing both men smiling broadly in a helicopter today, and frankly, it looks campaign-perfect.

This raises a question. After this week is over, will the media feel it had addressed the public's interest in the Obama campaign, with the public's need for balanced reporting of the political process, now four months before the general election?

I hope the public feels so.

On Nightly News tonight, we will have full reports on both Obama and McCain, as the war over the wars intensifies.

Andrea Mitchell will report from Baghdad and Kelly O'Donnell will be in Maine, where McCain appeared with former President Bush today.

We are trying to be not only accurate and informative, but also balanced, so you have the best chance of judging for yourself what these men who could be President are saying.

Sure you are...This raises a question, when did the accurate but balanced begin?
Good Evening Ann, Nice to see you this evening! I always enjoy seeing you on the Today Show! You do a wonderful job in the morning and filling in for Mr.Williams! It has been a much covered visit to the Middle East by Senator Obama. They were certainly very secretive about where he went during the weekend in Afghanistan. Richard did some excellent reporting this weekend! Of course, I enjoyed all his reports! It will be interesting to hear about his visit to Baghdad and his meeting with General Petraeus. General Petraeus really knows how the conditions are in the region and will ultimately effect the decision made about the withdrawal of troops. Looking forward to the broadcast Ann! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Celine,Claudia,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
XOXO
Ann

I love when you are on the Nightly News!! This is a very nice post and you have said it quite well, I believe that you and the other networks are very well balanced. I don't understand how people think networks are biased, but thats just me.

You are right in saying, however, that Obama going over there is being covered like he's already the pres. I really don't know who I will vote for, this will be my 1st time voting, but we will see what happens, I'm waiting for a debate between the 2 men.

Also, I hope you read the posts!!

See you in about 1 hour!
I've never quite figured out how you and Lester (on weekends) manage both Today and NN. An eight hour day it isn't!

Here is my thought. I don't care about "fair and balanced" and not just because it's the promo line for that network we all love to hate. It's that I think it's not attainable. How do you figure fair?
Once a long time ago that meant same amount of minutes. That's no longer the case. Here, on this blog a few months ago, there was a ruckus because of a sound problem on a live feed. Bias yelled the posters. I just disagreed with Brian last week about showing that New Yorker cover.. Unfair I claim to give it more coverage than it would have gotten other wise. See my point.

Neutral, to cover what is newsworthy in both campaigns, without the use of either laudatory or negative adjectives is doable. And think neutral in deciding what stories to play. Harder, but still an attainable goal.

See you in a bit.
@ Michael Bucciferro Amsterdam, NY:  First time voter for president? Vote for the party, not the man. Look at the broader platforms of the parties and vote for their candidate. Takes the emotion out of it, and you'll be able to look at your decision on principle, not personality.
The three networks, just as the Times, are contributing to the Obama campaign illegally and calling it news (or the rejection thereof).
We have a democratic election process.  We do not have laws that state the media can determine the next president and throw its power to assure their will is followed.
It is time for the Feds to crack down on election manipulation of the media.
It would be nice to really see "balanced" coverage between the two candidates and between the two parties on NBC News but frankly I don't ever see it and don't expect to in the future.  Where were the three big news anchors when McCain traveled overseas a few weeks ago?  To me, it looks like NBC, and most of the news media, is in a propaganda like campaign to convice its viewers that Obama is the person that should be president!  Its like an Obama Love Fest.  Now if you don't believe me then look at how NBC Nightly News has reported on Obams in the past: When the Reverend Wright story broke (March 14, 2008), NBC Nightly News quickly glossed over the story and spent the next 5 minutes celebrating Obama's childhood.  To be honest, NBC looks more like the "Obama Biased Channel".
Ann your singing to the choir as we're regular viewers and we know Nightly News with Brian Williams isn't following the White House memos. The tricks of the past are old now and NBC has shown they are the only honest news station.

Now to Obama's visit. McCain said he would stay in Iraq for 100 years now Obama and Iraq say different. It's not Obama's fault the White House leaked the information. We can see some reporter spinning this story and still it remains the same. When given a choice Obama gets it hands down as McCain is all over the place and talks like we're in 1940's. In a way Obama does bring the John Kennedy show. Remember how Jackie Kennedy took the hearts of the World. We have had such a bad relationship with the World for 7 years as the President has lied and illegally invaded Iraq. Americans remember the WMD, Iraq Freedom or Mushroom Cloud lies that have been told in the pass.
McCain has made mistakes and continues to make mistakes about everything as his supporters and the media correct it. Even former President Bush can't help McCain. Now the funny thing is McCain blaming Obama for the high gas prices. Who's the President?
General Petraeus will do what ever a Commander-in-Chief says to keep his job. Notice when other Generals spoke up they were fired.

Ann the War Criminals that was arrested, now will that happen to the other President who committed War Crimes in Iraq. Any President who allows torture and kidnapping of innocent men/women/children and keeping them in Gitmo should be charged by the United Nations for those crimes. The Attorney General is just following the orders of the Bush/Cheney policy of Crimes Against Humanity.

Ann please point out that two other Senators are with Obama and he's not by himself on this tour. Senator Hagel deserves a shout out for his hard work too.

Best to Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and Matt
You must remember that the media, including and especially NBC and MSNBC, is giving Obama the "big push" ... you'd think he was already president. It's the opposite of "fair and balanced" ... call it "unfair and biased."
Good Evening Ann, Great broadcast this evening! First of all the report by Andrea Mitchell concerning Senator Obama's trip to Baghdad. Hearing the dinner with General Petraeus was forthright and animated means it must have been an interesting discussion. Senator Omama is speaking of a timetable of withdrawal of US troops in 16 months whereas General Petraeus is more skeptical and even though violence is down dramatically still wants to review conditions on the ground before agreeing to any timetable. There has been great progress made with the Iraqi Army, Iraqi Police with the great help of the US troops, but it still isn't totally secure. The people are worried about the consequences when the US troops finally leave the region because chaos could be the outcome. Hopefully, the progress will continue in a postitive direction and peace will be the norm in the region. Time will tell. On another note I enjoyed the In Depth piece by Mr.Bazell from Iceland and how through the people knowing their past relatives can help to determine genes for diseases. The woman featured in the report really has a rich knowledge of her family which provides alot of information. Seems like the people in the country are really eager to participate in the program and that is really good. I hope it helps in the long run. Finally, the piece about the CEO of Marriott and the blog proves how this idea if sending comments to corporation executives is so very influential.  Hearing from customers of the hotel and their experiences can help make the service better. I certainly have enjoyed tremendously blogging on the Daily Nightly and World Blog because I realized that all of you at NBC really appreciate the responses. That makes me feel really good! You are all wonderful reporters and do fine reporting! Especially, my favorite Richard!!
And there are some wonderful ladies on this blog which I have the privilege of blogging along with every night! You are all terrific ladies!! I love all the support!! Thank you for the broadcast Ann! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Celine,Claudia,Anna and Matt!
Anna-I'm very happy you enjoy my Cliff Notes of the broadcast! Thank You!
You ladies are the BEST! And of course the BEST GUY Matt!
Be Well always!
XOXO
Dear Ann:  It was a nice surprise to see you again this Monday on Nightly News.  I hope Brian is OK, and his father is not ill.  I haven't heard anything about his father being sick, but it is unusual for Brian to take time off.  He is a serious workaholic.  The story about the tractor trailer drivers was very scary, considering how fast they drive for such a huge vehicle.  They should have to be in perfect health before they can get a license; For their own safety as wellas everyone elses.  Also I think you are always very fair and balanced in your reporting.  And as you said people can judge for themselves; And just looking at Bush's approval ratings shows they are not judging the republican adminstration VERY WELL, to say the least.  Hope to see you again tomorrow, thank you for your excellent broadcast.
Do you really believe that the public isn't suspicious about all three network senior anchors traveling and "reporting" on the Obama trip. Will the same group be spending time with Senator McCain?
The news coverage of Iraq drifted far from the reality of what is actually going on. Before we can get a handle on the current situation an important truth must be established.

We have no right to impose our will on the sovereign nation of Iraq.

If the Iraqis no longer welcome us, we have to leave. It doesn't matter if George Bush or his surrogate General Patraeus or John McCain want to call leaving a bad idea. Its not their call.

We've been told our intervention in Iraq is a benevolent mission. Once we are no longer welcome in Iraq our presence becomes an occupation. By pressuring the Iraqis to allow us to stay we are crossing the line from peacemaking to imperialism.

Bush's demands are far beyond what is necessary to hold the peace until the Iraqis can handle the job themselves.  Bush demands that Americans have the power arrest anybody they want in Iraq and don't have to give the slightest account to the Iraqis. Meanwhile, Iraqis aren't allowed to arrest US troops or contractors or diplomatic personnel under any circumstances. Bush demands the right to use Iraqi territory to attack Iran without any permission from the Iraqis. Bush refuses to specify how many troops the US will station in Iraq, where they'll be stationed or whether there will be permanent bases or how many. Only after the Iraqis pressured Bush with an endorsement of Obama's withdrawal plan did Bush even in the vaguest terms say when or if we will leave. "Horizon" Bush says. Imagine applying for a car loan and informing the lender that the amount or time of the payments can't be specified but they are "on the horizon."  McCain says we'll be in Iraq for 100 years. All of this has nothing to do with preventing a blood bath. This is a naked takeover of Iraq.

The public is largely unaware that we control Iraq's money too. Bush is still using the impoundment provisions of the previous UN sanctions against Saddam Hussein to quarantine $50 billion of Iraq's oil revenues in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. There are $20 billion in back civil judgements against the Iraqi funds for wrongs during the Saddam era. Plaintiffs have been unable to collect because Bush protects the money with an executive order. Americans have threatened Iraq that if they don't bow to Bush's demands Bush will lift the executive order and the Iraqis will lose $20 billion of their own money. This isn't about helping an ally. This is about bullying a weak country into submission.

We pretend Bush never said the most frightening he's said about the war on terror because it sounds too insane to believe. Bush defines the war on terror as a 100 year battle that will install regime change all across the Muslim world. Bush said that if we bring Democracy to these countries then 100 years from now the great-great grandchildren of the current inhabitants will be so greatful for democracy that they'll forget all about how we bombed their theocracy loving great-great grandparents and the Muslims of the future will no longer wish to bomb us.  That's Bush's plan.  When looked at in light of our departure in Iraq from benevolent intervention into imposed occupation one must recognize that Bush's plans sound far more like global plots than crazy solutions to terrorism.

Little notice has been paid to Bush's pressure on Iraq. We must recognize the line we are crossing.

INFORMED!!!  Doesn't "Traverer-in-Chief"  imply next president.  NBC FOX mirror image.
Hi All:

Lisa, thanks again for the Nightly Cliff Notes.  I have to confess that the first video I look for in the evening is from Mr. Blue Shirt.     Richard must do a load of blue laundry every week.  Have you ever noticed how the lead story seems to be from Richard nearly every night?

Laurel, please keep me posted on good articles with links this week.  I am turning over the Google torch to you!

Jackie, glad you and Peaches are having so much fun together.  Have you made Junior's yet?

Stephanie, happy soon to be birthday.

Stephanie and Claudia, the thing that irks me about the breast self-exam is that the test is free.  Everyone should do it to try to stay healthy.   Yes, I do miss it sometimes but I am a regular.   I just think there are too many women in America with little or no funds for a mammogram.   My digital mammogram  was $185 last month.   Okay, enough already, I will shut up about NBC and the mammogram segment.

I am off for vacation at 4 AM in the morning and heading to St. John.  I am leaving my laptop and all things electronic behind for some good R & R, kayaking and snorkeling.   It is one of my most favorite places on the planet.

Bests to all!

One more thing, Miss Anna is too tired.

Phyllis, this one is for you!   From your comments yesterday.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/07/21/email.snoop.ap/index.html

Bests to all and please do not snoop on co-worker's email or give your company passwords to anyone!  Looks like it is a federal offense.
There is no accurate and balanced on network news. Brian Williams has joined Katie in becoming Obama's press secretaries. Thus as NEWS anchors they have become irrelevent. Perhaps you could serve the public and do some investigative news on important issues relevent to the public issue not those personal interests of the few governing NBC news. The biggest issue this country faces is a self serving congress that only seeks it's own preservation. There is no oversight on Congress and no real reporting on what is going on there. Why not look at 3 items:
1. The revisions to the Glass Steagel Act in 1999 that is the real cause of the housing and banking crisis. Perhaps you could read it and talk to some really intellegent financail folks and discover (and perhaps report what you find).
2. The fuel crisis in this country started in 1974, that is a fact. Legislagtion has been passed to prevent drilling, and reasonable people form even doing alternative energy projects economically. The one consistant factor in this time .... CONGRESS... who is the first to point fingers at the current administration ( and there have been many of both parties) ... Congress ! Now it is a current crisis and all you can do is point fingers at people to serve your own agenda. What if we had not passed the laws in congress to prevent drilling, all the legislation lobbied for be environmental groups (FERC, etc) that prevent the development of green energy, etc... Why do you not look at this and report the truth for a change. Too much work or does not serve your agenda.
3. The Farm Bill just passed by congress over the Presidents veto. Have you read it. I have. Full of pork and subsidies. Passed by this congress. Got any questions as to why food costs are going higher? Gee could higher fuel costs have anything to do with it (see above) and how about the wrongheaded policy to subsidize corn farmers to convert to ethanol that has no impact on fuel usage or prices. Ask credible scientists. See what you find out. I wonder who voted for all these policies.

One consistant factor is congress. Perhaps you couls actually look into this and report the news. Then maybe you might see viewers return. The TRUTH is the basis of news and considerably attractive to the American people. By the way they know it when they see it. Right now they do not see it. certainly not form network news as you push your own agenda. Why not do your job abd serve the American people as the constitution envisioned the free press?

This is not a left or right issue. The self important congress has been creasting these issues since 1974. It cuts across both parties. But alas, this would be NEWS. I doubt you will hear the call for a return to real news and the truth. So perhaps you should stay irrelevent and pass into the sunset for whatever your personal motivation.

This probably does not pass the test for printing here. Apparantly not many do. Oh well, the free press only applies to you... for now.
Your audacity of hope is unfounded: one would have to have an IQ of 80 to believe that you are expending vast reserves of effort to ensure a "balanced" report, which is why I get my news elsewhere.
I have always preferred NBC News until now.  I still watch you guys for now but then I have to go to CNN to hear the "Whole Story".

You have not said anything about the NYT and their lastest unbiased reporting.

I am begining to wonder about you guys up there on the North Eastern Seaboard.  Seems as though when you and MSNBC moved in together you became one.

You know what I'm talking about.
The way you guys are covering Ba-rock Star Obama, you would think he is already president.  Can you please talk about the fact that he is now going to try and take credit for pulling us out of Iraq when that wouldn't have been possible without the surge that he didn't support.
It's hard to imagine why anyone would think a one party city like New York would put out biased news reports in favor of Obama. BTW shouldn't Obama and the democrats be giving us a timetable for Afghanistan?
I am a long, long time viewer of the Nightly News, and a big fan of Brian Williams as well as Ann Curry.

However, I am very discouraged by the coverage of the McCain-Obama campaigns.  On one hand, Nora O'Donnell covers Senator McCain's day in an upbeat, positive fashion.  On the other, Andrea Mitchell feels the need to find critical elements to site in her coverage of Obama's events.  This seems to repeat itself nightly.

For the first time in a long time, I am also watching CBS News with Katie Curric.  If I find a fairer balance, I will switch, however reluctantly.

Please!
I agree that Obama is getting a lot more press coverage than McCain.
Balanced??? Are you kidding? Any pretense of "reporting" is long gone, with all three anchors tagging along like puppies, reporting breathlessly ever move Obama makes. MSNBC has become an arm of the DNC, as has all three of the "mainstream" networks.
Your 24/7 coverage of Obama is totally out of control and totally bias reporting. I have a feeling it is going to back-fire and the American people are already realizing it. Holt referred to BO as making a tour of duty in the Middle East. Wrong, the American Military are on a tour of duty and doing a great job  protecting this country. BO has condemned the military since day one and is now trying to take credit for any good the American Military has done, with all his past suggestions. He ,Durbin, Reid,Clinton and all the other Libs, including NBC, have been dissing the Military and Pres. Bush every chance you get. BO is not the President and you continue to make it seem he is. Your bias,Lib, reporting is doing more damage to America and the up-coming election. Probably more then you realize
I think it is disgusting that over the weekend Lester Holt referred to Obabma's trip as his "tour of duty". This insults all the brave service men and women past and present.
Ms. Curry,

I came away from Monday's newscast with a very bad taste regarding the so-called "liberal media".  This was exacerbated by the NY Times "Opinionator" column attacking the press's love affair with Obama...

It seems to me that, again, the Republican machine is trying to manipulate the press into bending backwards to avoid any seeming left-wing bias.  Perhaps I am taking last night's broadcast out of context, but let me describe what I saw:

1.  Obama goes to Iraq.  Maliki agrees with his timetable as do many Iraqis.  But Petraeus disagrees.  Most of the report is about how safe it is in Iraq, and very little about Obama or his positions.

2. McCain campaign: His advisors say he's already got C-I-C credentials, so turns to economy in an "All-American setting".  McCain says he "will end this dependence on foreign oil"  Then clip from the Today Show interview, saying "Actually I have far more experience on the economy than Senator Obama."  Then you showed the new McCain commercial claiming that Obama's support of the offshore drilling ban is causing high prices.  Cut to McCain and Former President Bush, where McCain credits the surge for Obama's safety in Iraq: "I put everything on the line for it."  The report switched gears to the NY Times editorial question, ending with the "It was standard procedure to suggest revisions and that it had published at least 7 of his previous editorials." This report ended with a statement by McCain that troops could be home in 2 years, and winning wars brings troops home.

Now let me point out several important items that the average viewer would have missed:

1.  Each claim on the McCain side shown in commercials, quotes and clips was presented without any supporting facts or contradictions.  (It is not uncommon for any claim by Obama to be followed by a refuting McCain spokesman.)  So these claims were put up on the news without context or alternative, and thereby appear to be "facts".

2.  The Today Show clip showed McCain sounding strong, and failed to show another of his major gaffes during that same interview, speaking of the (non-existent) Iraq-Pakistan border.  If this were not his pattern, I would forgive this mistake, but he so regularly makes mistakes regarding the sides in Iraq that I fear he may not really be in command of the facts, but just parroting pro-military propaganda.

3.  How could you have shown the commercial accusing Obama of high gas prices without comment, and then show President GHW Bush without mentioning that he was the person who ordered the offshore drilling ban, not Obama.

4.  Finally, now that he (and Maliki and President Bush) are speaking of a "time horizon" and the pressing need to pay attention to Afghanistan, how can you not want to directly compare that to what Obama has been saying for a year?

I don't want the news to just throw millions of facts at me.  It is your job as journalists to PROVIDE CONTEXT!  Show me the contradiction between Obama's problems with NAFTA and his more global, free-trade viewpoint.  Contrast McCain's desire to drill with his history of environmental concern, and with Bush Sr's original order.

I work with lots of data, and part of my job is to try and understand what the data tell me, and then present my findings to my employers.  Your job is similar, to organize the facts so that we recognize the patterns.

Equal time is not just allowing each side to make their false claims and then nay-say the other's claims.  Equal time means giving equal time to "responsible" statements, and presenting the facts either supporting or contradicting those claims.

Where is the context?

Hopefully last night's show was an anomaly and will help us make sense of the nonsense, not just contribute to it.

                        -Dan
Then, Mr Hann, they will have to close down Rupert Murdock's FOX Fair and Balanced BS Network, The WSJ, NEW York Post and the rest of the so-called news you probably listen to.  Some of us like to hear other opinions, not just yours.
This comment censored from Variety shows what many persons like myself, who once trusted the MSM tells the story Ann so aptly touches upon but does not address.  CBS in this comment means ABC, BBC, CBS, CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, PBS, NPR, NY Times et al/most others:

The final result of CBS's self-possessed buffoonery of keeping Katie Couric on, is that the smartest, least lemming-like Americans are walking quietly away from CBS's so-called' television news' altogether. She's mere eye candy who sweetly blathers.  Who cares, except those w/o a life.

As for Couric and the other 'network anchors' going w/Obama to Iraq; their bedtime antics w/Obama display their journalistic perversion, notwithstandling their excuses.  Michelle won't be too jealous, at least for awhile.

Far more useful ways to spend our valuable time on earth are: washing the car, helping the wife and kids, drinking some water, anything not flat-lining in front of CBS TV 'news' propa-pablum.
Anna,

Thanks for the information.   I really do appreciate
it.

Phyllis
MBW, California: Thanks for the help. I honstly don't know who I will vote for. Thanks!!

You know, I know that their schedules are very bussy, but I wish the blog posters would respond to the posts.
I have always been a fan of Ann Curry and Brian Williams.  I felt that they have attempted to be reports of the news--not makers of it.  However, I am very dismayed at the unprecedented attention that NBC along with the other major networks are giving one presidential candidate--the most liberal in many years--in comparison to the other candidate.  The three networks have already seen the loss of viewership due to cable.  Americans aren't stupid.  They can see through this bias and I predict that your viewership will continue to dwindle.
I don't understand why none of the reporters reference the change in strategy that accompanied the "surge" which is what made it effective.  The increase in soldiers alone would not have brought about the decrease in violence - it was the new way the troops were deployed!
I am disgusted at the unbalanced “news coverage” and embarrassing media circus that Senator Obama is creating, with your help I might add.  I have three active duty children who have served in Afghanistan over the past 18 months, and two of them are still there.   The mere thought of an inexperienced Commander-in-Chief  leading my children in this day and time in particular, is simply unconscionable.  Your VERY UNBALANCED coverage and lack of air time to Senator McCain is wrong and disgusting.   I will no longer watch your news programs.  Lester Holt, you need to learn the correct usage of the term "tour of duty."  You should be ashamed.
I have just finished watching 7 different news stories about McCain activities today and Obama's travels and experiences.  I was impressed with the traveler's pose and style as reported on by all the programs I reviewed today. Once again I was baffled by the McCain responses and see him as a follower not a leader - and a person who is very confused - especially in his responses - I think Kelly O'Donnell is very astute to be able to figure out what he is attempting to say and interpret it for us.
My favorite story of the whole day was your reporting on Iceland's genetic link information and the possible future it holds for all of us. Wow, now I know where my free time research will take me tomorrow.
Thank you for your information sharing and professional reporting.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned Brian Williams' whereabouts? There' been so much talk about the 3 anchors following Obama overseas but WHERE IS BRIAN WILLIAMS?
TOUR OF DUTY?!  NBC Nightly News Referred to Obama's trip to the Middle East as a "Tour of Duty".  Will they award him a purple heart in order to be on par with McCain?
Having reread all of the comments here, including my own, I must say that it is obvious that many of your viewers are seeing what they want to see, myself included.

Perhaps, without regard to his qualifications, Obama is running a better campaign, like Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984, where well-controlled events always appeared to show him in a good light.  And Obama himself is sufficiently careful and in control to minimize obvious gaffes.  (Keep in mind that, as a black man trying to appeal to white voters, his mistakes would be magnified, so he has learned to think before speaking.)  Maybe, it is not that the press is enamored of Obama, but that the excitement among his supporters, especially the young, is part of the story, along with the residual resentment of some disappointed Hillary supporters.  Finally, in a visual medium, we know that looking good is very important.

And perhaps McCain's campaign is less well run, putting him in less flattering situations and he is a less natural speech giver.  Maybe his natural tendency to speak off the cuff, without regard to previous statements and inconsistencies, brings negative consequences.  Unlike Obama, he hasn't had to be careful about what he said, born to be an navy officer never working in the private sector, and choosing to be a Senate gadfly.  Like President Bush, it seems that he doesn't always think before speaking.  And among Republicans, the story is that McCain doesn't generate the same level of excitement, even among his own supporters, and that ennui, along with the burden of Bush's negative ratings, is part of the story.  And, obviously, the camera is less enamored of him than Obama.

Some of these differences may matter in a president, and maybe some of them don't.  I find myself shocked and dismayed to be defending the network news coverage, but given the anger on both sides, I can't help but conclude that they are not showing favoritism.

I still think that TV news needs to add more context.  That valuable commodity seems to appear only on Sunday mornings, with the late Tim Russert, Tom Brokaw, Bob Schieffer, and occasionally with George Stephanopoulos.  It is sad to say that context is most often associated with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show.  (Comedy or Tragedy?)
NBC has thrown its professionalism down the toilet and flushed.  NBC Has thrown its integrity in the sewer.  NBC has thrown its independence, its objectivity, its fairness, its judgment, whatever, out the window in order to be close to The Messiah, Lord Obama; in order to get a Democrat in the White House. You've lost another viewer.
NBC news is the pits. It has been for a long time. Obviously everyone has their opinions about Obamas trip being so heavily covered by the so called "top" news anchors. These anchors and stations long ago declared themselves as part of the left wing liberal media. It is a shame that the news slants left or right instead of just reporting the facts.  Most Americans can make up their own mind if given the facts. It is when the talking heads present their opinions as facts that make having intelligent discussions about important topics impossible.

If you want fair and balanced...watch Fox. It's the closest thing there is.
Anna, thanks again for the information.  This
morning there was an article about it and I typed
my comments with no names mentioned. I feel
violated, but I felt a lot better after I wrote
about it.  Phyllis
