Odd anniversary

Posted: Sunday, July 20, 2008 4:58 PM by Ian Sager

By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

I've been known to wake up and start my day forgetting it's my own birthday. Yet somehow this morning, I woke up at my usual 4:30 a.m., checked the calendar, and knew exactly why this date was important, and why I'll never forget it. What happened on July 20th, 1969 hardly earned a mention in most publications I read today. This, despite the fact that our world hasn't been the same since.

The funny thing is, next year at this time, you will be reading all about it. So why is that so? Because it will be the 40th anniversary, not the 39th. I often ponder our fascination with anniversaries that end in zeros and fives, but accept the fact that in life we need predictable mileposts. I was 10 years old on this day in 1969, and remember sitting glued to the television thinking that there is nothing this country can't accomplish when it sets its collective mind and will to it. That memory serves me well as I report the many challenges our country faces today, because I still believe it.

Many of you by now have probably figured out what event I'm referring to. And at least on this newscast, you won't have to wait until next year to be reminded of the day the world paused and stood in awe.

I hope you'll join me tonight for NBC Nightly News.

Dear Lester,

I assume today is the anniversary of the moon landing.  I have to be honest, the only reason that event was even on my radar is because I read that Buzz Aldrin will be a guest on The Daily Show this week, and concluded that meant the anniversary was near.  My own ignorance is based on the fact that I hadn't even been born yet, when men walked on the moon!  I do, however, remember the date of the release of our hostages in Iran.  I was only a little girl at the time, but that event is burned into my memory - as is the day John Lennon was murdered, and the day John Hinckley tried to assassinate President Reagan.  I guess we don't often remember dates of world events for good reasons, so it's nice that you have a pleasant memory from your childhood - one that so many share with you.  I look forward to the coverage on tonight's broadcast.  Oh, yeah - may I recommend "Walking on the Moon," by The Police, as an accompaniment to your story?  :-)

Happy Sunday!

Lots of love to Lisa, Jackie & Peaches, Stephanie (hope the weather is being kinder to you), Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.  XOXO
Good Evening Mr.Holt, I was very, very young when this big event happened on July 20,1969, when man landed on the moon. When the immortal words were spoken,"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". It was a great milestone in history. I am glad you reminded us of the great event Mr.Holt. Whether it be the 39th or 40th it is a great event anniversary. And you are right that our world hasn't been the same since then. Much happening the the Middle East with Obama's visit continuing in Afghanistan and then on to Iraq and other countries in Europe. I saw Richard's report right away on Weekend Today this morning and it was excellent as always Richard! Another great blue shirt! Anyway, I hope to see him again this evening! Stay Safe Always Richard!! Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Holt! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Celine,Claudia,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
XOXO
Happy Birthday Lester! Thanks for the reminder. How could I forget it was all the talk in the late 60's the Apollo missions and finally the moon landing. Have a great day.
Good Evening Mr.Holt, Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast!! Starting off with his reports is great! Richard'd report from Kabul,Afghanistan showing Senator Obama's meeting at the Presidential Palace with Hamid Karzai ( I hope I spelled his name correctly) and with the US Military was extremely important to him understanding what is happenning in the region. Richard walking through the streets stating that 40 people have been killed over the last few days and the resurgences of the Taliban militants plus the opium dealers have made this region a very dangerous place. There needs to be more areas controlled by the government and not by the militants, but meanwhile the violence increases. It was good Senator Obama spent time with the US Military having breakfast with them and thanking them for their service. Time will tell what will occur in the coming months with that region. Another great report Richard! Stay Safe as Always! Love those great blue shirts!! Always handsome!!
Now Senator Obama will be going to Iraq and meeting woth top Commanders learning how the surge is going in the region. Andrea Mitchell's report showed differences in the Obama's amd McCain's viewpoints on the situation. Prime Mininster Maliki seems to be leaning towards the idea of Obama's 16 month withdrawal of troops, yet many Commanders state that is too risky. It will be interesting to see what happens this week during his visit in Iraq.
On another note the report by Mr.Mullen about China attempting to clean up the air quality seems to be having some good effects. Less cars on the road, construction halted, shutting down of factories might help in making the air more tolerable for everyone and of course for the Olympic athletes.
I liked the video of the baby penguin! Nice to see the penguin swimming with other penguins! So very cute!
Great reminder of the landing on the moon! We have come very far and still have more to go!

Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt! Great to see you Richard!! Always Stay Safe Richard!! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Celine,Claudia,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
XOXO
Now you have told us your age Lester thanks. Well I was mush older then as I was born when the UFO landed in Roswell. Something to think about.  Some much has happen over the pass 62 years of my life I really can't pick one that stood out yet.  I believe life is all about the surprises that happen each day as it allows us to know just how small we are in this Universe.

Obama seems to be holding his own with his trip. That leak is helpful and let's see how well he does on the rest of the tour. Soldiers that email me from Iraq hope he visits their area. As for what I would say to John McCain " be careful what you wish for or recommend". McCain visited the Middle East with hundreds of soldiers protecting him as he brought rugs, then we heard of the hundreds of soldiers dying and the bombs in the Green Zone. Yes he thought it was funny to tell Obama he would visit Iraq with him and that Obama never went over seas. Now look what happen. Lester please point out that Republican Senator Hagel is with Obama as he can give his view of the situation. Working together is the answer.

We also need new honest Military Leaders that work for the best interest of the soldiers and not the White House. General Petraeus is following the orders of the White House and at lease the Military families and soldiers know it. Because a person holds a title doesn't mean he/she is speaking the truth. McCain and others make Petraeus is much more then he really is. When the total truth comes out we will see all the Generals were the same following the direction of the White House's interest not our soldiers.

Henry Paulson is all over the place he's so confused with the Economic problems. At lease he's being seen for what he doesn't know. This is what happens when a person is appointed to a job their clearly not qualified for as the American people suffer. Let's hope when Obama gets in office he picks Warren Buffet to clean up the problems and mistakes as we know he is over qualified for the job.

Have a great Sunday all
Best to my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and Matt
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mullen is much closer to Obama's positions than NBC portrays. Mullen has been saying that its likely we will be able to continue a draw down of troops in Iraq. Mullen also says troops should be transferred from Iraq to Afghanistan. That's a position Obama favors but McCain opposes. Mullen's warnings about possible condition changes on the ground  have always been part of Obama's policy.

Richard gave great reports about conditions in Afghanistan. McCain's refusal to go along with General Mullen and recognize the dire situation deserve to be reported.

Bush and McCain are trying to keep us in Iraq longer than the Iraqis want. What right do they have? It doesn't matter what generals have to say if the Iraqis want us out.

Lester,
Thanks for remembering man's greatest scientific achievement, ever.   Why it has so little importance today to so many baffles me.
  Great Job !
Wow!  I am glad the Moderator around here is so kind.  Who knew that Op-Ed pieces where rejected!!  I thought they were like a blog and if they had space for you and you agreed to appropriate language you were in.

Bests to All!
Shame on me - I totally forgot about this anniversary.  Usually I remember!  Unfortunately, I arrived on the scene five years too later, so I have no memory of such a stellar event.  It was a stupendous event that should be repeated as long as we as a global community need to treasure, respect, and protect.  In so many ways I'm grateful we've not made it back there, as we've proven that we can't treat the world in a good way, so we have no business going further than our own sky.
I enjoy David Gregory's news broadcasts.

My curosity - How tall is David Gregory?
It is not my intent to contradict you, but the
world changed in 1979 and it is documented and
I agree based on personal experience. Saddam
came into power in 1979: then the revolution in
Iran.  I could go on and on but I do not want
to monopolize your Blogg. I really enjoyed your
story, however, and that was an exciting event. I
rmember it well.  My husband and I were newlyweds.
Have a nice day, Mr. Holt.

Mr. Holt, I bought a book late this afternoon
entitled "1996"  I would not have given the book
a second glance if it had not been for your Blogg
on 1969.  Picking up a book like this is not a
coincidence with me.  Anyway, in skimming through
it I relate to Gloria Naylor.  I also have another
book by her "Stigmata".  So everything is copecetic,
Mr. Holt. In both cases, in tranposing the numbers
and turning the 6 upside down with the nines you
get "666" An Omen, perhaps or my imagination is
running away with me, or I need to swear off politics
and get back to writing.  Have a nice evening.

Another odd Anniversary. Annapolis, Md. in the late 1600's  Would that be 1696 or 1699?

I was reading a book this morning and found this old
newspaper clipping 6-7-01 entitled
AMERICA IS OUR REPARATION BY AN AFRICAN AMERICAN
NORMAN A. LOCKMAN (LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL)

FINAL PARAGRAPH

MORE BLACK AMERICANS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE SWEAT
AND BLOOD OF THEIR SLAVE ANCESTORS ALREADY MAKE THEM
MAJOR STAKEHOLDES IN AMERICA.  THEY EARNED AMERICA
FOR US.  THAT'S WHY WE LAUGH WHEN IDIOTS (OFTEN
RATHER RECENT ARRIVALS) TELL US TO LEAVE IT IF WE
DON'T LIKE IT.

AMERICA IS OUR REPARATION!!!

ANNAOLIS, MD.  HMMM!  THAT'S INTERESTING.

Mr. Holt, I remember sending you an email about
666 being positive and that it related to 666 gold
of King Solomon.  I just had a thought or ephipany!!!
Maybe all that gold is in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

That was a heartbreaking story about the young man
from China not being allowed back in China.  He
was a young man in the demonstration, after all
and it should not be held against him.  So sad,
Mr. Holt, that he is in exile.
