Wars, politics, and presidents

Posted: Friday, July 18, 2008 3:40 PM by Barbara Raab

By Ann Curry, NBC News anchor

Which presumptive nominee for President would best handle the wars America is fighting?

This question will inspire even more intense debate after Barack Obama's trip to the war zones in the coming days.

Tonight, Andrea Mitchell, already in Baghdad tonight, reports on the timing and risks and reasons for his trip, and she will include rare interviews from the very men who will debrief Obama: General David Patreaus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker.

(Forgive me for this digression, but honestly, whenever I write Andrea Mitchell's name, I actually pause because my brain wants to write Andrea the Great, as in truth, she is.)

As you might expect, John McCain has some things to say about Obama's trip and some of those things are perhaps surprising, as we will hear from Kelly O'Donnell, on the set with us tonight.

There is also real war news today. President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki have come to a hard-fought agreement on a "time horizon," but not a "timeline," for reducing the number of U.S. troops in Iraq. We will have details on what this means.

Also tonight, stories with stunning pictures, including an especially cool one showing us a rare glimpse of the dark side of the moon. Bet it tickles your brain this Friday evening.

I just look forward to the day when the democrats kill or capture UBL and the war on terror ends. I'm sure cities like New York won't require anymore federal funds for homeland security. Yes they've said that many times. Iraq isn't part of the war on terror, and they will "finish it" by getting the one guy.
How on Earth can Ann Curry think that Andrea Mitchell - written without hesitation - is a great person? She is only a degraded correspondent since Richard Engel became the Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent - a position she had during the late Brokaw days. Is Curry patronizing Mitchell or what? The only great thing is on Mitchell that she is the wife of former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan.

But now to the reason for why write again. As I watched today afternoon the "Morning Joe" vodcast from today morning, my attention fell on the scene when they showed the scene of Elizabeth Hasselback talking about the "N" word. And then came this black commentator of the "Morning Joe" team and said, I quote: "Elizabeth Hasselbeck has a point but she isn't BLACK". And then the survey about favouritism among black voters for John McCain where he got miserable 5 percent. And then John McCain's speech before the NAACP previously, no one cheered for him when he spoke. But when Obama came on stage all wooed and cheered. Here is my point: Are black people in the United States of America become racists instead of the white people?

It's great that Obama doesn't speak at the Brandenburg Gate, as Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did. Advantage Clinton. No he has to speak at Victory Column, a landmark relocated by the Nazis in 1939 to its current location. But as a hopefully forthcoming vision, the Column is a symbol of winning a war successfully. I hope the US will exit Iraq and Afghanistan successfully.

Have a nice broadcast Ann and rethink your position on Andrea Mitchell.
I have a great respect for you which came after years of watching you report. I don't agree with you about Andrea Mitchell but I do respect your opinion of your coworker. As an NBC viewer I make my own judgements on each reporter myself.

Obama is showing leadership that McCain lost with his cooperation and hug he gave Bush. McCain once was a strong leader but gave all that up to be part of the Bush team with a promise that the GOP would back him for President. Obama will do well as he's at lease education and knows the nations of the World and who the Shiites, Sunnies and Kurds are. At lease the soldiers in Iraq have already reported down sizing. Bush knows he's a lam President and is now doing what he can to cover up his crimes and mistakes.

The US can't figure out what foods are good or bad.

Iran leaders have been trading with the US since 2000 and Halliburton has been doing business with Iran since Cheney took office. So why would anyone be surprise at the US sitting in an Iran meeting. The Media has been lied to again.

Good new Patrick Fitzgerald allowed Congress to know Karl Rove was working on him getting fired. But with no Justice System or honest Attorney General nothing will be done about it.

The Foreign Countries are so excited about Obama's visit it's like that of John Fitzgerald Kennedy's visit. Life is funny and I guess God will soon start blessing America after the new President is elected.

The joke of today is the White House is now reporting that China's reduction in gas is causing the reduction in the cost of barrels of oil. If the President of Iran had a headache that would be an excuse to bring higher prices of gas for Oil Companies to get bigger profits.

I do feel bad for the Media Stations who are getting information from the US Propaganda Department. For 6 years the Media has reported that we have to stay in Iraq or the enemy will come to the US. We learned it was all about oil not Freedom/WMD/Mushroom Cloud. McCain and Bush say we will never leave Iraq even when Iraq said for the US to get out. Now we're told with choice words we're pulling out and handing over the job to the Iraq soldiers.  Anne some of the loyal NBC viewers pay attention and remember what's reported. The American people have been played for fools by the Republican Law Makers/some Democrats and the Bush Administration for the pass 7 years.  Obama is scaring them and these crooks are folding up shop. The viewers know the honest  reporters from those who reported for the White House.  I look forward to the new Administration and hopefully allowing the Media to do their jobs and just give the honest facts.

More banks will come to light with problems and our problems just keep coming as it's been 7 years of this crime wave.

I'm proud the Democrats wont sink as low as the Republicans have as they attack Mrs. Obama. Mrs. McCain campaigns for her husband and gets respect from both Parties.

Have a great weekend all
Best to my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and Matt
Here are my two cents for the producers of the Nightly News.  I always watch Brian Williams - If Mr. Williams is on vacation, hiatus, etc. and is replaced by Anne Curry the television does not go on.  I rather get my domestic and international news on the internet and same for the Today Show when Meredith does not appear which is a real sacrifice because I think Matt Lauer is exceptional.  That's it.
The news hasn't even aired yet and NBC is already running another hatchet job for McCain. What reasons will Andrea Mitchell give for Obama going to Iraq? I can bet in advance she'll portray the trip as a phony initiative to try to hide what she insists is his inability to be commander in chief. Of course, when McCain went before the NAACP the other night nobody on NBC said McCain did it to appear as though he doesn't have a problem with the black vote.

I don't suppose there is any chance that Andrea Mitchell will asked the generals if troops might be needed more in Afghanistan? Will she point out that Obama has held this position for 11 months while McCain opposed it. Turns out Obama was right.

Then Kelly O'Donnell will allow McCain free airtime to slander Obama. McCain as always, won't be challenged on any of his assertions, even ones where he flat out lies.

McCain should be asked why he's complaining about Obama going to Iraq when McCain challenged Obama to do so for months, even running a calendar on his website. McCain accuses Obama of refusing to listen to the generals when Obama sticks to his plan, but if Obama has even the slightest change at the request of the generals, McCain slanders Obama as a flip flopper who can't be trusted. Kelly should ask McCain if such a cranky baby as himself is qualified to be commander in chief.

McCain should also be asked if now that Obama turned out to be right on withdrawing troops if McCain will be the one who doesn't listen to the generals.

Fact is we are getting thrown out of Iraq by the Iraqis and NBC is already trying to cover that up with this blog.  "Not a timetable." Its not. Its a polite (so far) eviction.
When NBC news staff signs on as groupies for Obama in this trip to Iraq, do they have to do all that being a groupie entails?  Are you all embarrassed to be so visually biased?  Are you all now aware of why the nightly news is going the way of dinosaurs?
In watching the piece about Senator McCain's reaction to the upcoming Obama trip my wife and I were struck by the choice to rebroadcast portions of McCain's negative ad attacking Obama's record on foreign policy as part of the story.  Incorporating this footage into the story lends credibility to the attack ad and gives it an appearance of news rather than advertising.  NBC News should hold itself to a higher standard and avoid incorporating such advertisements into its stories whenever possible, as blurring the boundaries only serves to undercut the show's credibility and give the appearance of bias.
Good Evening Ann, A great broadcast this evening! Of course it is always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast! Nice Blue Shirt Richard! Always Handsome! My favorite person to begin the broadcast! Richard reporting from Kabul,Afghanistan speaking about the agreement between President Bush Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki seemed like a good news and bad news type of agreement. The "Time Horizon" Richard spoke about doesn't really set a date for total withdrawal of US Troops, but an end to the combat phase. It would be good of their were no more need for combat troops and just the support troops, although as Richard stated they could be in the region for years. At least a framework is being made and this could lead to a better and safer region for the Iraqi people. Significant progress in a very tumultuous region . Time will tell. Great reporting Richard! Stay Extra Safe in Kabul!! The report by Andrea Mitchell from Baghdad and her speaking with General Petraeus showed how the Commanders really know best what the conditions are like in the region. I understood that alot depends on the mission, conditions, the enemy and other variables as General Petraeus stated. There is much risk in pulling out too fast, but the troops have been there for a very long time. The increased number of troops has made a great difference in the amount of violence which makes the civilians feel safer. Hopefully, it will continue in a positive direction toward peace. One must take each day at a time.
The report from Patty Culhane about women on the front lines was a good piece. Seeing as how there are more women suicide bombers it is an advantage to have women at the checkpoints. The Iraqi women seem to give them respect and the children like them. They are doing an excellent job and exhibiting a good future for women in the military. Good job!
On the note of the talks with Iran on their nuclear program, I certainly hope the talks end on a positive note with no use of these weapons. This region needs no more conflicts.
It will be interesting next week to see how Senator Obama's trip to the Middle East and other European Nations goes. I'm sure Mr.Williams will have great reports from the region. Of course I hope Richard will be on too! Yeah!
Thank you for the great broadcast Ann! Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Great report Richard!! Stay Extra Safe Richard! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Celine,Claudia,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
XOXO
The general impression I get from the media is that the surge in Iraq has been "succesful." Is there any chance that NBC News could deal with the following questions? First, how much of the reduction of violence in Iraq is due to internal Iraq politics and decisions made by different Iraqi factions and not because of the increase in U.S. troops? Second, would the situation in Afghanistan be less violent today if some (all?) the surge troops had been sent there? I suspect that we can't know the answers to these questions (for example, some forces hostle to the Iraqi regime might have made the decision to reduce their violence because of the increase in U.S. troops, or it might be because of internal factors, or it might be due to a combination of both factors), but any guesses?
Ann Curry....
Well Ann, what can i say?
You are brilliant!!! Great broadcast to all! :) lol
Ann I am such a fan of yours and I dream of one day having the privelage of speaking to you.  I am a 15 year old boy dreaming of one day working as a news anchor at NBC News, nationally.  You are one of my idols because I think you are brilliant!!! I would love to meet you one day! :) Thanks Ann for the inspiration....also what nice words about Andrea Mitchell...She too is a great icon of mine who I would one day love to meet as well :)
Dear Ann:  The dark side of the moon was my favorite part of the newscast this evening.  Bush's Time Horizon can be anytime within 1 year and 100 years, as his fellow republican John Mccain has said in his speeches.  I think our only hope of getting out of Iraq is if Obama becomes president.  And also the man who forgave the person who killed his son is absolutely amazing.  I myself can not even fathom forgiving a person who murderd someone I loved.  My first instinst would be to kill him with my bare hands.  "Whether or not I could really do it, I don't know, But I would want to. Thank you for your excellent newscast.  It is always a pleasure to see you on Nightly News.
I am been an avid NBC watcher but with Brian Williams going with Obama upsets me to the end.   I have found NBC and MSNBC being far left radicals and especially Democrats.  Why is he going again, he was there last month.  I am going a list of people to stop watching NBC and will watch FOX where they are not biased!! Shame on NBC!!!!!!
Lisa:  Thanks for your Cliff Notes of the broadcast each night.  I am not always home by the start time and really enjoy your notes and the webcast later in the evening.

Just a few questions for thought. Is anyone shocked that Obama has $72 million in the bank and he is still begging for donations?   According to his site, the Republican National Committee has $100 million on hand.

Plus all the free air time given to them by the networks and cable.   My God you have to be in coma to not know who is running for President!

Is anyone else just slightly wondering where all the funds are coming from and where all the funds are going?   Does anyone know if foreign governments are funding these campaigns?   What happens to the funds they don't spend?

Does anyone think Brian will show up with Obama next week as part of his official delegation?

Weekend bests to all!

With Brian Williams and the other 2 network anchors going with Obama, how in the world can you look into the cameras every night and say that you are fairly reporting news.  It seems to me that your bias toward Obama is very obvious.  That's too bad as I thought you were more neutral and fair.
"Andrea the Great"? Please, Ann! You seem like such a sycophant when you say things like that. You're supposed to be a journalist, not a member of the mutual admiration society with your colleagues. This illustrates perfectly how so-called journalists have become an insider clique that pals around with the very people you're supposed to be reporting objectively and truthfully about. But, I guess when you're all members of the millionaire's club, and completely detached from us little people, you watch out for each other, and reporting things like the facts have to take a back seat to mutual admiration and praise for how wonderful you all are.
Mrs. Curry,

I am looking forward to you taking over for the next few days, as well as Mr. Williams reporting on Senator Obamas trip overseas. I don't watch the Today Show so I only come across you and your work on Nightly News, and I'm a big fan. I'm sure you are just as interested/excited as I am to see what kinds of comments Senator Obama will make regarding conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and our standing with the rest of Europe. I enjoyed the broadcast tonight, and am looking forward to you filling in, even if it may be temporarily. "Thank you, and goodnight"
The networks sending their anchors on this Obama trip looks like little lap dogs following their master.  No joke, this looks bad.  It's news and everybody has to be there to report to keep the ratings up.  I just hope and pray everybody gets back home safe and sound.
For years I was an avid viewer of the news with Tom Brokaw.  When Brian took over, I stayed with it until I began to see their left bias.  Now that you have made the decision (along with 2 other major networks) to send him along with Obama overseas and did not do the same for the "other" candidate running for President, I will no longer watch any of your news.  I want fair coverage and complete coversage and you have just proven you are incapable of providing the same.
Ann,

It's interesting to me that you are tempted to call Andrea "Andrea the great" because I'm writing about Andrea's appalling lack of journalistic objectivity.  Maybe she simply believes too much of her own press but she started her story about Barack Obama's overseas trip with something to the effect of "Barack Obama is taking this trip abroad because voters don't see him as commander in chief material"  Really?  Was that the Obama's stated reason for the trip because I'd love to see where he said that?  Or is his Andrea's opinion?  Or McCain's opinion?  Or are they one and the same?  Her report went downhill from there..negative, negative, negative.  Kelly O'Donnell then talked about the McCain campaign's hoping for media "scraps" while Obama is covered abroad and played about 30 seconds of his new Obama attack ad.  I just wonder if either of your reporters can get through a newscast without reporting the days stories through the McCain Campaign viewpoint.  It would be a nice change of pace. If you don't think you have a love affair going with McCain, then please read this article.  It's called "Loving John McCain" and it was written with people like Andrea Mitchell and Kelly O'Donnell in mind:  http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080707/alterman

I for one am happy that ABC, CBS and NBC have decided to send their anchors on the trip with Obama.

I know for years people have been saying these networks have been biased on the liberal side.  While I have always given these three networks the benefit of the doubt I believe with this decision you have removed all doubt about whom you support in this election and removed any doubt about your liberal bent.  This display of crass arrogance and open rooting fro one candidate is to say the least appalling.  I certainly did not see your anchors on the trips the McCain has taken.

You must think that the American people are very stupid to not see your blatant display of favoritism.

While I have not yet decided who I will vote for in November,  I can say that one decision I have made today is to stop watching any news from any of these networks and any of your programming.

I am sure you have either given or been provided the spin that this is a risk for Obama since he could mess up and you would be there covering it.  We all know that you would only cover up any mistake and only report it if you were forced to.

I have yet to see you report on the legislation that Obama wants to pass to solve global hunger by sending over 800 Billion of our tax dollars to the UN, which has been proven to be a corrupt organization, to solve this problem.  Hell the UN won’t even tale steps to end the violence in Darfur.

Your news organizations are a sham and a front for the liberal and progressive movements that will end up destroying America and you with it.

You should be ashamed but since you have no conscience I doubt that will ever happen.

Enjoy your news and programming without me.  I will be trying to get advertisers to stop spending their dollars with you as well.

Dale Probasco
The whining on here is ridiculous. Maybe Obama gets more media coverage because he's more interesting than McCain. Even some guy on Fox News admitted that. McCain sounded and looked like he was about to fall asleep at the wheel during an interview with Matt Lauer a few weeks ago. Not exactly a fascinating person on TV.
After reading many of these whining and nasty posts, the only thing I can think of is they are republican Bush and McSame lovers; And they are very angry that Obama is beating McSame in the polls.  Don't blame Ann or Brian Williams--They are fair and excellent journalists--Blame McSame for being an incompetent candidate.
