Feeling fortunate

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

I have ample occasion -- several times daily, in fact -- to count my blessings in life and feel especially lucky that I get to do this for a living. Today, as I often do, I was listening to the FDNY Manhattan scanner on my office computer as I went about my work. I just heard a Batallion Chief ask for some "brief R&R" for his men after a particularly hot and smoky roof fire on the East Side. While I so miss serving in that capacity as a volunteer, I don't miss fires like the one they just fought. And now as I write this, they've been called away to dual alarms on the third and fifth floors of a Manhattan apartment building. No rest for the weary.

Another source of fortunate feelings today was the superb piece in this morning's New York Times by a colleague of ours over at ABC News, documentary producer Michael Bicks. It has to do with life and mortality and the loss of our friend Tim Russert. For us (as I know it is for Mr. Bicks and for many of you), the loss is incredibly fresh and urgent and raw -- like yesterday. That lessons have come from it tells us that Tim has had an impact beyond his life's work. This is about life itself.

We hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, You stated you feel fortunate and count your blessings in life and lucky to do what you do for a living. I think we should all feel that way on many occasions. We as viewers are lucky to have you as the anchor of NBC Nightly News. You always do an extremely fine job on the broadcasts and even add humor when the opportunity presents itself. I myself would not ever tune into any other newscast for the evening news. Keep up the excellent work! Those firefighters are always brave and dedicated to putting out the flames and saving lives. We should honor and thank them always. Looking forward to the broadcast. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Celine,Claudia,Anna and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Claudia- I have not yet found any video of Sunday's "War Zone Diary 2008". I will keep looking.
It was just extraordinary! Just like Richard!!
XOXO
Hi Brian,

Thank you for bringing up Michael Bick's article in today's New York TImes.  All who read this, please take the time to read about heart attack symptoms and take steps to live well.  It seems that Tim Russert is still educating the rest of us.
I think with all the saddness out there in the world it is important to remember that each of us has an important role to play in the world.

I do agree with Matt and what he said the other day the news sometimes is a downer.  Lester had a broadcast over the weekend and he didn't mention gas prices or the economy.  It was good news.  I really do enjoy the NN balance of the Making a Difference segments.

While it is good to be informed, we must not dwell on things we can't not change.  We must work on ourselves, our familes and work in our own communities to make the world a better place.

Please always remember that life is a good and happy journey if we choose to make it that way.

Bests to all!

@ Jackie:  Glad you are having a great summer with your children and enjoyed the 4th at the Mall!   I am sure they take great care of you because you took and continue to take good care of them.  Please thank Peaches for her good service to America for me.
Hi Brian,
Your blog piece today was very moving. Different things happen to me in the course of a day and I remember to be thankful for the life I have and the opportunities that I have been given.
Yesterday my husband managed to get away from work for the day and we went (without the kids!) to Grand Forks, North Dakota. Grand Forks is a 3 hour drive from Winnipeg, straight south on Interstate 29. It is a wonderful town of maybe 50,000 residents. It has a TARGET. My husband enjoys getting all the American products that he misses....Mounds chocolate bars, Chi Chi's Salsa, Wishbone Salad dressing, Prell shampoo, Ultra Brite toothpaste, GOYA rice (which we couldn't find). He says that driving on I-29 is nothing like the New Jersey turnpike (very few cars) but North Dakota seems to keep their Highways in good shape better than Manitoba.Gas was $3.99 a gallon. In Winnipeg it is $1.35 a litre so it was a little cheaper for us.
I enjoyed time in the store BODY & BATH purchasing some oil that when diffused smells like "Georgia in the morning" the sales girl said. I bet Lisa M. from Georgia could help me with that! My husband said, "Well it doesn't smell like New Jersey in the morning".....
I hope you enjoyed your trip to the Jersey shore. My husband's eyes lit up when I said where you were off to last week. He spent every summer there for 39 years until he came up here 10 years ago.
I look forward to your broadcast tonight. Keep on enjoying your summer and the wonderful life you have.
Hello, mr. Williams I am concerned about the antibiotic headline you will speak about tonight: I had an amputation( 3 toes on right foot) done in may 2008 Iam diabetic and I am taking 500mg of levaquin daily.  it only says take with plenty of water, it works, but I do not know if it has ant secondary effects?? I do watch you and chuck every night. I consider it very good information and of course the latest. Thank You very much.
Mr. Williams,

I am surprised you didn't mention the call for a timetable withdrawal of U.S. troops by the Iraqi government in your post today. I think this could have very large implications for the following months in terms of th election. I think it could possibly take away one of Senator Obama's biggest platforms. It seems like things are getting closer and closer to focusing more attention and resources on Afghanistan, as you reported last night. It seems like things are changing these days in the middle east and for the better. Looking forward to tonight.

And ladies, all of us, do google heart attack symtoms woman... they do differ.
Well, Mr. Bernanke had a point that any changes today won't help us today, but it can help us in not allowing it to happen again.  How will The Fed rescue the system when the system falls?

We can't thank our nation's firefighters enough for all they do to protect us from danger - I'm specifically thinking of California, but it also goes along with Brian's comment today.  I personally could not handle the intense heat.  I can't imagine how they keep up their stamina.

I am sure that someone will complain about the sound byte from the Obama family interview, but I thought it was cute.  The girls are so sweet and I hope they needle their dad but good!  *smile*  I certainly wouldn't want to grow up in the White House aka fish bowl!

I would just about loose my sanity if I didn't have the daily newspaper to hold in my hand.  I don't read it every day the day it comes out, but I do read it.  I feel like I've lost friends when I hear that cuts are going on at the news desks around the country. The newspaper was central in my growing up; I would stand by the box to collect the evening paper from the delivery man.  My mom wondered where I'd come from since neither of my parents were that fascinated with the news.

I'd ride my bike if I still had it...it was stolen a few years ago b/c I had to chain it outside.  No sense in getting another one since I'd have to store that outside, too.  Since I have bad feet - thanks to genetics - bike riding is a much better choice of exercise for me.  I used to bike 10 miles a day when I was a kid to get to town and back.  I don't imagine I could get across the street now!

Glad you're having a good vacation, Jackie!  I agree: no matter who we elect this year (Nader, anyone?  LOL) is just going to disappoint us again.  Should we put our hopes up?

Hello to the rest of our regular cast!  I'm wilting in the heat up here; I hope you're all staying cool!
Brian,
How fortunate for Michael Bicks that he had the presence of mind to think of Tim Russert, it likely saved his life.  Thanks for making us all aware of his story, we can all learn a valuable lesson from his experience.

Thanks for bringing Chuck Todd to your studio tonight to help us all learn a little more about election tactics and strategy.  I can only imagine how interesting the coming months of the campaign will be.

I especially enjoyed seeing last night's story on Dara Torres on your broadcast. Her achievements have long been known among followers of swimming, it's great the rest of the world can now appreciate her amazing accomplishments.  I hope she swims her way to a medal in Beijing.

Have a great week!
Dear Brian,
I am a great admirer and a big fan of the Nightly News Broadcast. I am an avid Triathlete and two time Ironman finisher so I loved the story last night about Portland and the increasing number of people communting to work by bike. I looked forward tonight to the story about the health benefits of cycling but I was horrified that NBC showed the nation a charming, lovely Senior enjoying the benefits of cycling WITHOUT WEARING A HELMET. That is exactly the wrong message to send to our fellow countrymen about riding a bike. In a triathlon if you checked your gearing prior to the race and weren't wearing a helmet, you would be disqualified. If you left the transition area without your helmet strap buckled you would be disqualified. Showing somebody riding a bike without a helmet would be like showing someone on a treadmill smoking a cigarette. You are a great journalist, so please correct this very bad image shown this evening.

Thanks for all you do,
I just watched the July 8th NN.  The story about the positive aspects of riding a bicycle included an 82 year old lady from Florida.  The final clip of her showed her running a stop sign.  Another segment should include bike safety and obeying the rules of the road and the problem with mixing bikes and autos and trucks.
My first post to this site, but I am a long time viewer of the NBC Nightly News, and fondly remember watching The News at 9 With Brian Williams on MSNBC.  Thanks, Brian, for bringing attention to the piece in today's NY Times----I'm sure Tim Russert's untimely death will inspire many to pay closer attention to heart health symptoms.  I loved the story about the benefits of biking, but YIKES!!! Mrs. Adkins was riding without a helmet!!!!!! I also found the story Paper Cuts particularly interesting. I live outside Charlotte, NC and am heartbroken at how much the quality of the local paper, The Charlotte Observer, has decreased in the four years I have been here. It's bordering on pathetic. I identified with the person in the piece who said there was just something about holding the newspaper in her hands, as much as I enjoy reading news online, I still just have to have my morning paper!  Best to all for an enjoyable rest of the week, and I am keeping all those affected by the CA wildfires in my thoughts.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast as usual this evening. First of all the medical report by Mr.Bazell concerning breast cancer and the differences in the disease due to age was very informative. Every woman should always be checked and it is extremely important to take care of oneself. Early detection is key to getting the proper treatment. I did not realize though the younger the age the more aggressive the disease. It shows one really needs to be knowledgeable about the disease and get the best treatment.
On another note the report by Mr.Lewis on the wildfires in California showed that without cooperation from the weather it will be difficult for the firefighters to gain the upper hand. It is really great that all the other States are sending help to fight the flames. Terrible for those who lost homes I hope these people will be able to rebuild. Hopefully, the weather will improve quickly. Now even though I love to read the NBC News and MSNBC News on the internet and watch on television, I do enjoy reading the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in the morning. The report by Mr.Taibbi about the newspapers and the cutbacks of staff was sad because so many people do read their morning paper. It is still nice to read it along with a hot cup of coffee. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. We are fortunate to have you at NBC Nightly News as the anchor! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Celine,Claudia,Anna and Matt!
Jackie-Glad to know you had a great Fourth of July on the Mall! Sounds like a wonderful time with your family! Thank Peaches from me too for her good service to our country!
Be Well Always!
XOXO
Ok, so we all know I support Obama, let's get that bias out front. I was curious enough about the McCain ad to check out the whole thing on his web site. I wonder if whoever produced that, thinking they were appealing to baby boomers, realizes that it was more than condescending to those of us who opposed that war? Believe it or not, we weren't all hippies who believed in free love!

If the intent of the Obama piece was to make him look like a typical Dad, it succeeded. The girls are well spoken for their age. I was amused at the complaint about the suitcase, that's pretty typical too.

One last note on Mike Tiabbi's piece. Kudo's to who ever did the graphics! Really cool for a news program.
Reminded me, as I"m sure it was intended to do, of every 1930's or 40's detective movie I ever caught on late night television.

Regulars, Dinner party at my house tomorrow night for the new Obama staffers in town, it's at my house so if I disappear for a day or two that's why. Back soon
Hi All:

Here's the link to Richard's broadcast from Sunday on MSNBC.   They are challenging to find on the site.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17725245/

Note to NBC/MSNBC cyber-folks:  Can Richard just get his own page for his videos and posts?  They would be so much easier to find.
Hi Brian,

Loved the piece on Barrack Obama's family tonite, his kids are so cute!  They seem really down to earth too.  Also, loved the biking piece at the end of the show, that little old lady was a trip~  she really gets around, but where was her helmet?  LOL!

I look forward to your broadcast tonight. Keep on enjoying your summer and the wonderful life you have.
Please read the email I sent to the MSNBC website about my friend who died on June 25th after she fell off her bike just riding in her neighborhood.  She was 61 and was NOT wearing a helmet!  Please inform your viewers of the dangers of this!!!!!
I loved the piece on Obama's family too, good job Maria!

I read a piece on the AP today which didn't make the evening news, and I am confused about why. It seems like BIG news - to me at least. Iraq's national security adviser Mouwaffak al-Rubaie requested that a time table for U.S. troop withdrawal be part of any security deal with the United States.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080709/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has also asked for that. And Iraq's equivalent of congress also sent a written request to our Congress, asking for the same thing in the recent past.

As far as I can remember, none of that information appeared on the evening news. I don't understand why that isn't considered important news information.
I was watching Nightly News tonight and really enjoyed the piece interviewing the Obamas. However the clip of McCain's newest t.v. ad was disturbing, especially the comment during the ad that John McCain was experiencing a different love, "A love of country". Implying that those hippies (first part of ad)didn't care about country. I am old enough to know better! Thousands where beaten by police protesting the war. Tell the men and women at Kent State that were mowed down by our own soldiers that they didn't love their country. This attempt by McCain to rewrite history will backfire.
After the painful week that was the passing of Mr. Russert, the heartfelt service, and all of the remeberences by everyone on ALL networks, I was just thinking how sad it is that once the burial is complete, we tend to move on with life. How appropriate it is to keep this discussion of Tim alive. He is missed by us all. I feel that all of us out here in America want to keep Tim with us . A suggestion if I may, It would be great to see a special on NBC of Tim's "Greatest Hits"
Brian -

I'd like to add my thanks to you for having the piece of the Obama children on Nightly last night.

How refreshing to see children of famous parents who are being brought up in a normal way. Barack, Michelle, their Grandmother and all others who are involved in raising these girls are doing something right.

What a difference from Chelsea Clinton.

Joan

Mr. Williams:  I have watched NBC News for many years.  By the way, I, too, feel I have lost a personal friend and a valued advisor in Tim Russert.  However, to my point.  I watched Tuesday's broadcast which included an "Access Hollywood" interview of the Obama family.  It seems that every time I turn on television, broadcasters are giving Obama free air time for appearances and things that do not, in anyone's book, count as newsworthy.  Last night was a prime example.  Will John McCain ever be given equal time on your network and other networks?  I do not watch the evening news to be entertained by reports best left to "Entertainment Tonight".  Thank you.
Psychiatrists have detected the first case of "climate change delusion" OK we have "victims" and a disease. Line up the lawyers and file some class action lawsuits against anyone who has lied to the public about global warming. Let's redistribute some wealth!!! Yee Haw!!!
Brian I watch your show. On tuesday night you spoke with a gentleman about levaquin. He said it was being recalled by the FDA.I took this drug three times in the span of 3 months.Getting worse each time .I was hospitalized for 7 days with kidney failure .After seeing your show i tried in vein to contact the fda. when i did they deny that the drug was being recalled  .Who do i believe .I dont know who to contact.Maybe you or someone can get some answers
thank you

Brian Williams this letter is long overdue, Thank you Thank you Brian for being concerned about people, I am from New Orleans and as we say down there "THAT BOY MAMA RAISED HIM RIGHT" keep up the good work and God bless you, My deepest condolences to the NBC Family in the loss of Lil Russ "BIG  Russ's son. and please don't let people forget about David Bloom.
Dear Brian Williams,
You are the only American news anchor that I have trusted and have been faithful in tuning in every night at 6:00 PM on KING5 in Seattle, WA.  However, I am deeply disturbed that you made no metion about "Rove ignores subpoena, refuses to testify before Congress".
If you do not explain this on your next newscast, I will never watch NBC News again.

I'm shocked, I thought I could trust you in keeping America honest, and telling the truth.
