My thanks to Lester Holt for filling in, and allowing me to be with my family yesterday. After a weekend of family cookouts, the annual Memorial Day parade, and a visit with my Father on the sparkling Jersey shore -- it's back to work here in New York. It was an eventful weekend: a heartbreaker for Danica at Indy, the horrendous weather in the Midwest , and the staggering losses to the entertainment industry, both of which we will mark on the broadcast tonight: Dick Martin, one of our own here at NBC, and the outstanding Sydney Pollack.

The understatement of the weekend was a quote I found on a wire service story on the web: after a Kalitta Air 747 cargo jet (auto racing fans might recognizing the Kalitta name from the world of drag racing -- the air charter firm was indeed founded by racing family patriarch Connie Kalitta) broke in half after a rough landing in Belgium, an official was quoted as saying the aircraft was "very seriously damaged." Broken in half...that would pretty much qualify as "very serious" damage. Anything that can't be repaired with duct tape -- especially on an aircraft -- is pretty serious.

We hope you can join us for our Tuesday night broadcast tonight -- we're back on the job in New York.

As you "surface" after your nice holiday, I have been wondering when and why the news media have not touched on these recent topics related to the high prices of oil:

1: Home heating fuel is now $4.54/gal here in my hometown, well over a dollar higher than last year, and marching ever higher. What will that do to consumer shopping, especially in August (back to school) and the Fall (holiday spending) when folks just need to stay warm.

2. On that same vein, what are folks doing to prepare for keeping warm next winter?

3. The trucking and airline industries gets lots of coverage as they struggle with ever higher fuel costs. Why hasn't the fishing industry getting any coverage? I believe the commercial boats in Montauk are paying a price north of $8000 to fill their tanks. You need to catch a LOT of fish to break even on that cost. This is our food supply at stake here.

I would love to learn more on these topics and how we can adjust and find alternative ways to eat and stay warm during this fuel crisis.
Fact: Obama is Chairman of a Senate oversight committee which oversee's NATO in Afganistan. He has yet to hold a hearing.

Fact: More US Soilders lost lives in Afganistan last year than any other time in the conflict.

Fact: Radical Islamist Warlords in Afganistan are harvesting the biggest Poppy crop this year, than any of the 5 years since the conflict began.

Happy Memorial Day

Good Evening Mr.Williams, Great to see you back this evening! Mr.Holt did his usual fine job filling in for you. I am happy you enjoyed your holiday weekend with your family. Also, I am glad yo visited with your father I hope he is doing well. I thought of you during the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS on Sunday because at one point they introduced some Medal of Honor recipients and I thought to myself I'm sure I read about all these men last year on the different postings here. And of course you being on the board too! It was a very moving and touching concert. Too bad that Danica didn't win the Indy 500, maybe next year. Sad to hear about the passing away of Dick Martin and Sydney Pollack both very talented in their own right. The entertainment world will really miss them. Regarding the Kalitta Air 747 cargo jet I saw the video from MSNBC and that looked horrible. I agree that if something can't be repaired with duck tape it is serious damage. Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all great ladies of this blog!
Be well always!
Brian, any chance you're going to address the generals issue on air?  Or more fully on your blog? Kudos for at least touching on it on your blog, but there's a lot more to this huge story, unreported conflicts of interest for one.

You like to take on the New York Times Styles section for being a little flimsy on the issues.  You don't want others to think the same way about the NBC Nightly News, now do you?

Howard Kurtz and Glenn Greenwald have rightly been on your case on this.  It's not just you of course; most of your counterparts at other networks are equally blameworthy here.   But that's not an excuse.
Too bad about Sydney Pollack and Dick Martin.

My worst nightmare is when Bob Dylan (65) has his turn. Funny that two of his most recent songs are about death ... "When The Deal Goes Down" and "Not Dark Yet, (but it's getting there.")
Please don't change what the NBC News and NSNBC networks do and how you do it. Those complaining now, i.e. The White House and Clinton campaign would very much like to control everything said about them and when it isn't, they complain. No one has attempted to, and been more successful at "managing" the news than this administration - please don't overreact - don't change your format, keep reporting it as it is. Thank you.

I just came back from vacation and for the first time I didn't watch the evening news or read a newspaper.  Now it's 6:45 and I'm watching the evening news and now I am really depressed about the economy, gas, etc.  I felt great about the weekend at the shore, people were there in droves spending money and the weather cooperated.  Things were bright.  Listening to the news has really brought me down.  Now I wonder how much of what you do and say has a great deal to do with how this country reacts to things.
I saw your report on GM's upcoming Environmental friendly vehicles that they are working on and one thing that was not mentioned was the EV1 Electric Vehicle made by GM that was a Huge success and was taken off the market because it was not popular by the Oil Companies.  The gentlemen that made the battery for the EV1 had made significant improvements to the new battery but GM still took the vehicle off the market.  This may be something you might want to check on.
Just heard your report on people suffering from high gas prices.

$40 for gas for the boat, $85 for gas for the RV and $45 for campgrounds.

Sounds like a person who financed 125% of their home mortgage.

I don't have a boat, I don't have an RV. Where did I go wrong?

Do you really expect anyone to feel sorry for people that can't afford gas for their toys?...Get real!!!

Not to worry though...Barack will solve the problem...yeah, right!

If Barack loses, what's gonna happen to NBC and MSNBC. Ya'all are gonna lose your audience.
Hey Brian --

How about the facts and a balanced report? I am referring to the diving couple you reported on who were lost on the Great Barrier Reef this past weekend. First, they are not married as you stated. Second, the reason Australia suggested the couple pay partly for their rescue was because they sold their story to the British press for around $A500,000 (or more) immediately after their rescue. This is all the more significant in that many rescue services in Australia, and the UK for that matter, reliy upon contributions. Their rescue cost $A400,000. Finally, according to Australian authorities, the sea was calm when they disappeared, and fellow divers claim that the couple deliberately broke safety rules. So please, paint a more accurate picture. Thank you. JJD, Charleston
I suppose I show my age and lack of passion for "classic" Hollywood when I say I've never seen a Sydney Pollack film, and never heard the name "Dick Martin" until today.  At least I recognize Pollack's name!

Brian - thanks for sharing the emails viewers sent int about gas prices.  They were good, particularly about the teenage girls who have the boyfriends pick them up!  My dad would have thoroughly loved that one!  I gassed up my car today.  I've been fortunate that my required driving means I only use  half a tank a week.  I briefly considered trading in my '96 Geo for something larger so the babies could ride with auntie when they are old enough to ask - and naturally, my work with transporting animals would benefit, too.  However, between having a 12 gallon tank that gets 30 MPG, and a pristine body with no rust (a great feat here in snowy Maine!) I decided to keep it.  At least I only paid $37 for 9 gallons of gas today!  Gas was $4.30 when I was in Chicago two weeks ago. Gas hit $4 a gallon in Detroit while I was there; the news stations gave considerable coverage to it, and I wondered if it would get that high before I returned home.  At least most of Maine is still hovering in the $3.90 range!  (I managed to pay $3.849 this afternoon.)

Marilee, my mom's mobile home is heated by kerosene.  She is on automatic delivery and just finished paying off her bill when she got another 100 gallons at $4.37 a gallon.  She wasn't pleased!  Now that you mention it, I haven't even heard local news stories about how gas has affected fishermen.  As lobster is Maine's most well known export, I'm surprised I haven't' heard more.

One step I've chosen to take in fighting higher prices everywhere is to become a passionate supporter of the local farmers' stands.  I stopped by as a "once in a lifetime" event and discovered, to my amazement, that diary products (eggs & milk especially) were actually less at the local stand 5 miles away than at the supermarket chain's cooler 2 miles away.  The meat costs more, but I get more poultry for my money, it tastes so much better, its fresh, with minimal pesticides plus antibiotic free.  They've got loads of fresh produce that I can't get at the grocery store, like local, seasonal delicacies such as fiddle heads.   Because there is no junk to purchase there, I'm actually spending less - the money I am spending is on healthy, good foods and supporting my neighbors.  My blood sugars are leveling out and I'm sure my cholesterol is going down, too.  I can't wait to see what my next blood draw has to say!  If other readers haven't checked out that option, I strongly recommend that you do.  I've come to look forward to the trip every week!

So Brian, Charlie, and Katie are going to be on the same couch tomorrow morning?  I must now go and set my alarm clock to make sure I don't miss such an event!  Seriously, though: if the cause is so great that it puts the competitiveness of the networks aside, then I should sit up and pay attention!

Hello everyone, particularly Lisa, Jackie, Anna, Laurel, Claudia, Celine, and Matt!  It also occurs to me that as we say hello to the regulars, we don't always say hello to the NBC team that keeps the blog running!  So hello & good evening to all of you, too.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another fine broadcast this evening. First of all the report by Mr.Quintanilla concerning the economy certainly looked bleak with rising costs in everything and the struggle for small businesses to make a profit. People are pulling back on what they spend and the large department stores are really offering deep discounts for their merchandise to try to boost their sales. There is one particular store that seems to send mailers every week to their card holders and it certainly can fill the mailbox. I just hope this economy starts to get better for everyone because it is effecting everyones finances. The report by Mr.Costello from the GM test track was interesting, but it is going to take a long time before these cars will be available for the public. Technology such as this takes time meanwhile we are hurting at the gas pumps. Also, interesting to hear you read all those e-mails from viewers about how they cut back on their holiday plans. Between food prices and gas prices soaring it can be difficult to make plans. This summer is going to be tough on everyone and especially families whose children are home for the summer. I really hope things get better. Finally, I am looking forward to seeing you along with Mr.Gibson and Katie Couric on the Today Show. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. See you tomorrow morning on the Today Show! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all great ladies of this blog!
Be well always!
i just saw the broadcast about people and there "holiday" weekend that they couldnt go on!!! thats so sad that it has all come down to going camping and away for a holiday when what is memorial day all about????  its not about taking a trip or getting in your fancy boat, going swiming, etc.  its about all the men and women that have lost there lives for all of us to be FREE IN THE LAND WE LIVE IN!!! maybe i am wrong but, its a sad day when we all think of the "holiday" as a time for fun and sun,and the big party.
Why was the phrase "and straight man Dan Rowan" used when describing the death of Dick Martin? Was he anything other than? Was Dick Martin homosexual? I found this wording odd as someone who had no clue who Dick Martin was. Just wondering.
Welcome back Brian and Staff

now to business.  I am a consumer and I have no confidence in the Law Makers or the White House. We're in a recession if you don't believe check your bills and gas prices.

Good to see the President is using taxpayers money for John McCain's fund raiser. Let's face the facts the GOP is going broke so they have to get the money from some where. I'm not surprised at the conduct as the taxpayers have been robbed by the White House since 2000.  At lease the Democrats get their campaign money from citizen who want to give.

Brian I finally learned how Delegates and Super Delegates work. Now I wish Howard Dead has announced that the Super Delegates choose the nominee not the voters. It's a big waste of time and money.  I guess they say you've never to old to learn. I have voted since I was 18 years old, when the USA followed the Constitution. Howard Dead should speak up and let us know things changed. Dean could have told Hillary don't bother to enter the race as they had already picked a candidate that would follow Senior Law Makers orders.  I guess Bill Clinton was the last honest elected President under the Law of the US Constitution.  At lease it's good to know how it works now.

Bruce: Thanks for the facts I really haven't had time to keep up with Obama's record as a Freshman Senator. As for the Oversight Committee that Obama heads. My daughter got back from Afghanistan and the poppy production is bigger then ever this year. Things are going well as Cheney has ordered. Don't ask about the wasted US tax dollars you'd be in shock. So Obama was the right choice as the GOP knew he wouldn't do anything and let the plan of corruption stay the course.  Oh the sales of Afghanistan cocaine is real high in Europe this year so thanks to Obama's oversight things look good for drug users and sales.  Obama lost me when he brought a 1.6 million dollar home with a convicted criminal friend and called it a misstep. Then when he lied to the Illinois citizens with a contract with big business per the request of the White House.  Talk about great speak maker but will back stab you will smiling in your face.  Oh the Media finally said Hillary was ahead in Puerto Rico, that old line of I'm black too didn't work this time. Obama should have done his homework as one of the most famous Puerto Ricans isn't Ricky Martin but Roberto Clemente, which Hillary and Bill and the rest of the baby boomers know. Roberto Clemente was a Puerto Rican baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates and yes nice looking. He was a Baseball Hero and died to young in a plane crash.

Brian I'll see you at our special time 6;30pm

Best to my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and Matt
That electric car sure looked like it was going slow!  How fast do those things move?  lol!  I don't think I would have the patience to drive one of those, but it might come to that, some day in the future.
Gas (premium grade) hit $4.08 here, regular is $ 3.89. The poster above is right to be concerned with winter fuel, it's going to affect air conditioning this summer here, the major electrical supplier just got permission to tack on a fuel surcharge to our bills.

I survived the 70's, the worst of it hit just as I was starting my family, we'll survive this, but 3.00 or 3.50 gas will be the norm. Lower the speed limit, wear sweaters, lower your thermostat, I remember all those   strategies. Frankly, at the end of it we all felt like we'd been taken for a ride. I am donning a tin hat here, but many of us felt that the gas companies had pulled a fast one on us. Now I'm not saying that the same thing is happening now, but record profits, and oil exec's earning millions does make one go "hum...

On another report, as the grandmother of 3, I hope in this rush to end childhood obesity we don't fail to take family builds into consideration. 2 of my grandkids are siblings. one as lean and petite as she could be (she will be the one all the other girls will hate in high school) her sister is as stockily built as her Dad, and his Dad before him. Both are normal and healthy, I'd hate to see either labeled because they don't hit right at the middle of a chart.

Lisa 8 days
In the segment you aired on Tuesday about childhood obesity, you displayed a line chart showing results of obesity surveys for different years.  Unfortunately, this chart was deeply flawed.  The horizontal axis on the chart had a smaller distance between the marks labeled 1980 and 1994 (a 14 year span) than between the marks labeled 1994 and 2002 (a 8 year span). Because of this, comparing the lines between the two time spans is impossible.  The chart is misleading and should not have been aired.
Laughing and crying. Laugh-in's joke board changed TV humor forever, and while I usually cry at the movies it's not normally during the opening credits. Sydney Pollack had me in tears with his opening views of the African savannah--he made me want to go back so bad! Both men will be terribly missed.

Hey everyone--I've got THE book and am about to curl up and spend the evening with Richard! See you all in a few days when I finish!!

Laurel-- You are not alone in your NOLA request. I've been on it too, but through other channels.

Take care all and happy reading as the books come in!
I have many concerns about the direction that GM and other automobile manufactures are heading toward.  The one direction in particular is the hydrogen fuel cell concept that appears to be the first step forward toward making a full transition to the electric car.  Beware of false prophets, when hydrogen fuel becomes widely available we will see that the science behind micro climate change was not thought through far enough ahead.  It stands to reason that when you produce the same amounts of “byproduct” whether carbon dioxide or water vapor you will have adverse ramifications.   High moisture vapor along with the additional moisture being introduced into the atmosphere from Global Warming will make large and small communities unbearable.  We will have more health problems rising from the heavy moist air and extreme high.  In addition to this our structures will loose there life expectancy from deterioration, there will be moisture every where.  Winter will be even worse.  To add an ending to this complex problem, I must say that the Oil Companies are should be deemed terrorist, the stock holders are terrorist as well.  As defined by the enacted law any action that is focus against the destruction of our economy falls in the category of terrorist intent.  Call out the Coast Guard and stop all oil in porting from entering the country and lets get down to self preservation, cant hurt any more that it does now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
on the news on Tuesday the 27th, NBC discussed some of the responses people emailed in about how fuel prices affected their Memorial Day plans.

All I heard was a bunch of people whining about how they couldn't eat steak or ribs!  God forbid, they had to eat homemade hamburgers!  Oh no!  That's terrible, such sacrifices!

We are so spoiled in this country.  And so lucky.  Europeans are paying twice the price for fuel and have for many years.

So finally we are actually adjusting our lifestyles to fit the rising cost of living.  It's about time we cut back on consumption of all types.  But it IS going to hurt at first.

In the end, we will be better off for it.  Tighten your belts folks, make a budget and stick to it.  We have no choice.
Are the NBC news producers and editors smarter than a fifth grader?  I don't think so.  On tonight's broadcast, an on-screen statement by John McCain (via the AP) spelled the word "surrender" as "surrrender".  Now that summer is almost here, why not hire some fifth graders as editors and proofreaders for your newscast and website?  They couldn't do much worse than the people you are currently using in that capacity.
Shark-INFESTED waters?  How about shark-INHABITED waters.  The harrowing experience endured by rescued divers Neely and Dalton in Australia's Great Barrier Reef certainly could have ended differently.  However the use of the term "infested" (always used by the media) suggests an unusually high density of these declining top predators.  This wasn't the case here, and rarely ever is.  Accuracy matters in while reporting the news, as do the word used to report it.  Sharks are in trouble world-wide - there's a story.
I watched the news tonight and listened to comments from viewers who are scaling back plans for their holiday weekends and summer vacations.  The trouble our economy is in today has much to do with the banking industry's invention of easy credit that made it possible for people of every income level to live beyond their means.  Since it looks like Americans will now be living a more conservative 1950s style lifestyle, perhaps I can offer the advice my parents gave to me in that decade and ever since:  Don't spend money you don't (already) have, and, Save some money for a rainy day.  At my BBQ this weekend we'll be serving ribs - they were on sale today and cheaper than home made hamburgers.
I am wondering why the other giants of our economy are not putting any pressure at all on the oil industry.  The auto industry, The trucking and shipping companies, etc.  The price of gas/oil is affecting all of us.  I think maybe it is because it really does not have that big an affect on them.  They have enough to get through this.  Other wise they would be fighting back hard.  It's obvious the oil companies could care less about education, family values, etc. because they continue to make it harder and harder for us to survive.  Bush could care less as he continues to pour billions into Iraq and ignore the crisis at home.
We will survive.
Dear Mr. Williams:
I heard you express regret at the passings of Dick Martin and Sydney Pollack.  Yes, many have heard of them.  However, virtually all Americans have eaten french fries which were previously frozen, and the man who made this possible died, at the age of 99, this past weekend.  His name is J.R. Simplot and in 2006 he ranked #80 on Forbes list of the richest Americans.  He wasn't an entertainment figure, so I guess he doesn't merit a notice! We shouldn't have just Pablum for the news; sometimes we need a morsel to chew. How about getting your news department to dig a mite deeper into the happenings of this highly varied and interesting world.
MR Williams
WeLcome Back from your holiday.  I must give you credit as one of the most respectful anchormen on TV today.  You leave out your own personality when asking questions and just ask the questions that need to be asked not like some of your conterparts on meet the press, who expose there own beliefs so far that they shou7dl run for office instead of trying to be a newsman and report the news.  I found the way that some of your reporters especially one who you have on nightly yourself who were involved with the debated went so far as to badger the candidates and not let them get an answer in.  When that so called reporter comes on now NBC loses me as a viewer as lomg as he is own because I want to hear the news reported not pushed in my face. I am talking about one Tim Russert. I will never watch another program he is on as he is so anti Clinton and he in not a reporter any more he reports on what he wants you to hear. so I do not want to hear hoim thanks let him figure out my questions please.

If anyone can come up with any answers to why mister Obama  has no interest in this let me know thank you.
and again
Happy Memorial Day, and I hope you and your family enjoyed your days off.

I am a diabled construction carpenter who gave part of the the Volunteered on 911 till New years 2002, now I am disabled, cannot work I hope this country elects someone that will look after people like myself and all the returning veterens that cannot work or anyon who cannot work due to the trauma or accident of 911.  Remember its not about Obama, Clinton, McCain, or the out going George Bush, Its about ourselves.  and how we can do best for ourselves and who can do best for us.  We all need health benefits we all need gas we all need food , we all need a roof over our heads, and we all need a strong military to protect us.  So do the right thing, get rid ofd the ones who are there for themselves and lets get people who are there for us, and if they aren't we have every 4 years to get rid of them!!!!!!

Thanks again
Brian
Hey Brian,

Tuesday night you said you were gonna be on the what you called "CBS This Morning" show. Well, I need to correct you, its actually called "The Early SHow".
Just thought we (the crew at WTSP) needed to give ya the business and correct you since we here are at a CBS affilate.
We love you and always think you do a great job!
Best,

Brian--You are such a fine writer and I have never written but to tell you what an excellent job you do.  However, the old English teacher in me can't let this one by--never capitalize father when using after a personal pronoun.  Father is always capitalized when standing alone--  Yesterday, Father ate an apple. Never :  Yesterday, my Father ate an apple.  I know you pride yourself in your writing and work, as you should, and want to "get it right."  Just a little lesson there.  You keep at it, fella!
I can't wait to see you with Charlie and Katie on the Today show on my podcast later today.  Looking forward to it, Brian!  And thanks for the news as always!
"White House used propaganda to sell invasion of Iraq, former spokesman McClellan writes in memoir." - MSNBC Homepag

Does this mean that NBC's role in this propaganda campaign will now be newsworthy?

I think it will be better for you to be proactive then get shamed into covering military analysts by another network.

Good Luck!
Wow, even a White House PR Flack has the integrity to come out against the Bush administration's use of propaganda to sell the Iraq War, but, NBC News refuses to report the story.  As David Bromwich, the reporter who broke the story 'Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon's Hidden Hand' said, "The cavalier attitude of the networks is astonishing. No system but despotism can survive when so many high up do such things without embarrassment."

How could any sophisticated "political propaganda campaign" include Scott McClellan, and be led by the great communicator President Bush?
That sounds like something that would only make sense to the conspiracy theory followers of the left's Joseph Gerbles (Keith Olbermann.
Dear Brian,

I am compelled to write regarding the e-mails you read from folks who were complaining that they had to make do with burgers rather than enjoy steak over the Memorial Day weekend due to this economy.  Looking at the folks in the midwest who are dealing with tornadoes, the people in China recovering from a devastating earthquake, and the people in Myanmar just trying to survive day to day, it's my opinion that the folks eating the burgers seem to be the lucky ones.  I know too well how gas prices, food prices, etc. are affecting everyone.  Last year I left my job to strike out on my own as a photographer and writer.  Call it baby boomer's folly if you will.  I am heavily dependent on the tourists who come to Maine each year to purchase one of my photographs to take home to remind them of the beauty that is Maine.  I don't know how this season will turn out, but I remain optimistic.  I don't have to make a fortune; I just hope to make enough to keep pursuing my passion.  So for those who had to make do with burgers this weekend, sometimes it's hard for us - myself included at times - to see we still have rather than what we don't have.
Brian,
I am a regular viewer of the Nightly News and I must say that I am very disappointed that the latest price of gas seems to be the top story each and every day on both the local and national news. There are so many more important problems in this country that you can talk about each night.

Boo hoo to the people whose e-mails you read on-air last night complaining about how high gas prices ruined their Memorial Day. Isn't it a shame they had to eat hamburger instead of ribs?

Americans should be grateful for what they have. Look at the millions of people who are homeless from the earthquake in China.

Instead of talking about the rising price of gas can you please educate your audience each night on what they can do to reduce their consumption of oil? Before we run out of it completely? What are they going to do when we have to ration gas? Better learn to conserve now.

To Stephanie:  Welcome Back to the news and blogging!

To Celine:    I am too reading from my leatherbound complete collection of Jane Austen!  Emma would be my personal favorite.  I would love to do a tour too!  Sounds like fun, fun, fun!    That reminds me my passport is expired.

Wednesday bests to all!
I enjoy watching your brocast of the nightly news. I have realy enjoyed watching trading places. I wish I could trade places with my parents but they are both gone. Please keep showing things like that. Look forward to seeing you tonight.
"Complicit enablers" states McClellan, President Bush's former point man. Here is the guy dishing it out to the American public, now free from retribution telling it like it is. Expressing his amazement that the American media establishment was so easily manipulated. There it is, in ink. Not only is our government nearly completely corrupt from top to bottom but the metastasizing disease has enveloped the last pillar of freedom, Free speech. How you all, self titled, American journalism patriots can collect those checks and sleep at night, I do not understand and will never comprehend.
Does everyone really have a price. Can America be bought and sold? This is how Brian honors the fallen that have given the most precious gift one can give.
Wont work Brian, no matter how many staged ceremonies, not doing something/anything to get back to the truth, you are soiling on the graves of those gone, those permanently injured, and those killing and being killed right now. Why has Iraq and Afghanistan fallen off the radar. Why is msm allowing itself to be controlled? This is what we are trying to bring to the world? Corruption and complete and total corporate control. How much money is enough? How much will it take for, you, to keep your mouth shut. Whatever your price is, is it worth all the lives? Is it worth standing silently, as a country, our country so many have sacrificed to build, crumble to dust?
If America collapses tomorrow, will the monies protect you and your family if its worthless paper?
How much paper buy's your conscious?
I saw your shameful performance on the Today Show this morning, shouting down your colleague Katie Couric as she made the plainly obvious claim that the media failed to properly scrutinize the Bush rationale for war. You are consistent, if nothing else.

The Iraq war has now gone on for longer than World War II. You, Katie and Charlie chose to devote three minutes to your first-ever attempt to revisit your actions and responsibilities before the war began. Three minutes.

I find it hard to believe that this doesn't weigh on your conscience any more than you let on. It should weigh quite a bit.
To Darick in Topeka
Guess I will be showing my age here, but "straight man" is an old phrase in comedy.  When 2 comedians were working together one was usually known as the straight man meaning that he would come across as serious and earnest in effect trying not to be funny which would make him all the funnier.  The straight man would not get the jokes told by the other comedian making the whole thing funnier.  If you have ever seen the Abbot & Costello "who's on first" bit, it is a classic example of a straight man
You should be ashamed of your interview with Tom Brokaw where he explains that it wasn't his fault for not questioning George Bush's propaganda leading to the Irag War.  There was no mention of the UN weapons inspectors who reported more than once that they couldn't find evidence of mass destruction.  There was no mention that claims of purchases of Uranium from Nigeria was refuted by Joseph Wilson in an article in the New York Times.  Yes there was sufficient evidence before the war that President Bush was lying about the reasons to go to war.  You, Brokaw and so many other journalists went along with Bush.  I hold you partly responsible for the war, the deaths and the low opinion of the U.S. by countries around the world.  It is the duty of journalists to question authority, question the evidence.  And tonight you and Brokaw claimed that "in that environment" you couldn't tell that Bush was telling lies.  I would like an apology from Brokaw, you and other journalists for your lapse in the responsible questioning expected of and required by journalists in this important time before the war.
