Too much sadness lately. I received word at home last night that Hamilton Jordan had died.

My wife and I had dinner with Hamilton and his family a few months ago in Georgia. He was carrying his ever-present oxygen tanks that evening, without complaint. He matter-of-factly ran through his most recent medical procedures, surgeries and treatments and talked only about his family and the future. He was the personification of bravery in the face of illness. His bestselling book, No Such Thing As A Bad Day, survives him as a monument to courage and positive thinking.

Image: Former Chief of Staff of President Jimmy Carter Hamilton Jordan In journalism, we no longer say things like "cancer victim" -- a phrase that was still in active use just a few years ago. Instead, we try to talk about those "living with cancer." Hamilton Jordan truly lived WITH cancer -- and taught everyone around him how to do the same. In life, he was devoted to his family--and to Jimmy Carter.

While his surname is quite common, his preferred pronunciation was not. Introducing himself in Washington, he was known to tell a first-time acquaintance, "My friends call me Jerd'n."

Some resented the forced customization, and when he became a public figure, not all television anchors of the day went along. Hamilton played a big role in then-Governor Jimmy Carter's amazing victory in 1976. At 34, he was the youngest White House Chief of Staff in American history. He was brash, impatient, intense, irreverent and obsessed with his boss's Presidency. He was a political animal, from a political family -- who was moved to enter the trade after watching Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. march through his native Georgia.

Hamilton died at home last night at the age of 63. He suffered from mesothelioma. He leaves his lovely wife Dorothy and their three beautiful children. He also leaves behind Camp Sunshine and Camp Kudzu, summer camps for children with cancer and juvenile diabetes. Hamilton's legacy will be with us for ages to come. It's Hamilton we will miss.

We hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast.

Speak to us of bravery when you do a Pentagon generals story.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, How very sad the passing of Hamilton Jordan at the far too early age 63. He lived with the terrible disease of cancer, but kept a positive attitude. I like the title of his book, "No Such Thing as a Bad Day". It was nice you and your wife were able to have dinner with him in Georgia and from his coversation he was aiming towards the future. The two camps named Camp Sunshine and Camp Kudzu will really help many, many children. He left a great legacy behind him. Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all great ladies of this blog!
Be well always!
Brian sorry to hear about your friend's passing.

Anne Thank you for your kind words what's funny is I haven't changed at all I'm still who I've always been young and old. Your picture is correct just add gray hair under the cap. I love life and people and your right I have kids that make me smile everyday. Now if only these kids would get married and give me grand kids to play with, maybe I'd stop bother them so much.

Hillary is carrying on the great woman before her. Senator Obama knows how matter qualified Hillary is as he knows how smart his wife is.  Only a man who has self confidence in himself isn't in fear of a smart woman.  As the Media continues to use curse words against Hillary it fuels woman empowerment. Weak men fear woman because they know the woman is smarter.  I'm glad my son's respect woman and admire smart wise woman. I think it's how a man is raised that makes the difference. My Dad always told me how great I was and that I could be what ever I wanted and he backed up that lip service. I passed it on to my kids. I laughed when my younger son said he had researched the candidates and said Hillary was better qualified. Ya that's my boy! Yes he does admire Obama but his vote went to my girl Hillary. It will be interesting to see how Senator Obama reacts when the Fox News/CNN/GOP reporters start calling Mrs. Obama curse words. It's so easy for people to sit back and say/do nothing when a woman is called such horrible names but what happens when it happen to their wife, Mother, daughter, sister or Aunt.  Obama told the GOP to lay off his wife which we know they wont. Mrs. Obama is from the South Side of Chicago not Kenilworth or Winnetka and she's not a Jackie Kennedy or Nancy Reagan.  If Obama is nominated the US will see a totally different First Lady, you might want to rent the movie Waiting to Exhale to see how black woman really are. I'm sure Mrs. Obama will make her mark as other First Ladies before her.

See you at 6;30pm
Good Evening Mr.Williams, First I will say it was much better weather this evening with much more sun. Although many people in Georgia are cleaning up from tornadoes and I hope the can recover quickly. Now on to the broadcast. The report about the cost of checking a bag onto an airplane was frustrating to hear. One certainly doesn't get anything on the flight and the extra price makes one consider taking the bus or train to travel anywhere. Hearing the price per barrel of oil is $133.00 is simply astonishing and seeing the price at the gas station is disturbing. Everyday it seems it rises and the airlines are paying a tremendously high price for jet fuel. It was interesting to hear the man from Chevron attempt to answer a question about profit from congress. I really do hope for everyone the price comes down because this seems to be getting out of control. I do hope things get better soon.
On another note the report by Mr.Mullen about the children affected by the earthquake was so very sad and heartwrenching. Those poor children are in such a terrible situation with not knowing where family members are located to those who are without parents is just tragic. The teachers are really trying hard to counsel these children and help them deal with the circumstances, but it is so very hard and it will take a very long time. Regarding Senator Kennedy, it is good that he left the hospital and was back home. Nice to see him out on the boat sailing along the water. It will be a very tough road, but he is a fighter and I hope he continues to enjoy a long life. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to you and to all!
PS-I think I'll consider the train for my next trip!

Lots of Love to Laurel, Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all great  ladies of this blog!
Be well always!
Hamilton Jordan was not a good Chief of Staff, and Carter's presidency suffered for it. I don't know if he was in over his head, or too green at the time, but I won't beat up on a dead man. I'm glad to see that he did so many positive things -- as President Carter has -- in later years. And thank you NBC & MSNBC for focusing more on the true heroes in Iraq & Afghanistan, the Specialists, Corporals & even junior officers who LIVE in harm's way. No other network gives them the recognition they earn on a daily basis. Fair and balanced does not mean ignoring the war or the soldiers. Keep up the good work.
What a tremendously great man Hamilton Jordan was.  I'll never forget his appearances on Imus, and especially his loyalty to Imus during the Rutgers storm last year.
Brian, after listening to your economist on what people will do because of rising gas prices, i.e., $6 by the end of summer, I had to comment on how he is so out of touch with the majority of American citizens. Their are many, and I repeat many, what use to be middle class American that never did go to the mall or drive outside of their normal daily drive to work because they could NOT afford it. They are now in the low income class. Anyone that was been barely making it a year ago, has been stretching it and now it's at the point to go without. It's called looking for the deals on the street, check Craigs List for the best buy, black market fuel and sell off whatever you don't need.

I shut down my trucking company in January because of rising fuel prices, damn expensive insurance and undependable drivers. My last piece of equipment got repo'd today because I couldn't sell it, couldn't make the payments and couldn't torch it or run it off a cliff like other truckers are doing that can no longer make it. This country is run by TRUCKS, TRAINS AND FUEL. Every frinkin thing we touch has a fuel cost attached to it. It's not a question of if the system will break, it's a matter of when.
I still will NOT vote for Obama - regardless. I don't care for his arrogance against women and his wife is awful. I am ashamed that NBC has pushed this so hard .I am a liberal woman that will not be swayed by the media bias against Hillary.

Obama SHOULD not steal the nomination. He is a disgrace to my country.
Brian ...

Thanks so much for so thoroughly and so thoughtfully answering my question last week on NewsVine.  I'm sure that having an "assortment" of people -- each of whom have a different point of view, which also represents all the different points of view of Nightly's viewers -- giving their input about the order in which the evening's stories are shown, ensures that the broadcasts don't become stale.

How sad to hear of Mr. "Jerd'n's" passing ... may he rest in peace.  His legacy, both through his camps and through his inspiration to others who are also suffering from the effects of cancer, will follow him for many, many years to come.

I am praying that Senator Kennedy will overcome his brain cancer and recover quickly, and beat the odds of the diagnosis of this form of brain cancer.
Brian the gas is high because the lobbyist made sure the Law Makers that make the decisions got stock. Look the excuses are getting old and repeated. The Media reported how China and Russia were making oil deals while the White House was busy committing crimes in the US and around the World. Now gas prices 4 dollars, in China gas is 1.54 dollars per gallon and in Russia it's 1.45 dollar per gallon. Now since China has more people driving you know why the US gas to so high. Many White House staff, President, Vice President, all Department Heads in current Administration, Law Makers, Judges, DOJ lawyers and even Supreme Court Justices are milking the American people. And the lies just keep on coming. If we had an honest Government that worked for the American people this wouldn't be happening.

I submitted my comment on Maria's post. It was nice to see her parents.

I heard the comment about Airline flights and the cost going up. At my age I'm in no hurry to get any where. Every business in the US is pushing up their prices some for not reason at all but it works.

Brian with a corrupt Government and Law Makers it's no surprise we will have the second Great Depression. I remember when the United States elected Leaders with experience and qualifications now it's who can win the favor of the month award.

It looks like the Democratic Party has already fixed the race. Senior Law Makers have made sure they will get Obama in so Kerry and finally be President. I was surprised at Pelosi but we'll remember her when it come to her re-election. Look for alot of Senior Democrat Law Makers will not be re appointed. Pelosi see Bush/Cheney commit more impeachable crimes then ever before in the history of this country yet all she says is we should pray. McCain is reliving his Military life over 41 years ago in hopes he will look like a soldier. If only he could remember this is 2008, maybe Senator Lieberman could remind him.
I will never be told who to vote for as I will never disrespect those who died for me to vote and have a choice.  I'm just not in picking a candidate because he/she is my race, I'm met some shady people in my race so looks like I might be sitting this election out. This will be the first time I haven't voted for President since turning 18, oh so many years it's been.

always the best to my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Anne and Matt
Brian,
I'm sure Hamilton would be ashamed of your cowardice at not reporting about the pentagon propaganda general scandal that you help perpetuate and won't even acknowledge.
You are a coward.
Brian: I watched all broadcasts including yours on the Senator Kennedy's brain tumor. I was amazed at the omission of an alternate "CRUEABLE" treatment. Not just prolonging his life but the chance to cure the cancer. Please refer to John Kanzius invention as mentioned on 60 minutes. I know this cure has not gone to clinical trials but they have realized a 100% cure rate on lab rats with no side effects. If I had terminal cancer and was given the option to prolong my life for a few years or skip clinical trial and try this breakthrough treatment, I would elect for the later
Dear Brian,

I remember Mr. Jordan as a tower of a man, by far the most impressive, if not the most interesting, in the cast of characters that was the Carter Administration.

The pronunciation of his name is not unique to those who grew up on the Coastal Plains of Georgia and Alabama. The last name of the legendary Auburn football coach, Ralph "Shug" Jordan was also pronounced "Jerd'n". Ask any rabid Aburn grad where they want to be on a Starday afternoon in the fall and they will tell you... Jerd'n-Hare Stadium!
Sorry for anyones passing, but let`s not forget how those clowns in the Carter administration wrecked our economy, and couldn`t rescue our hostages from from Iran. Some of us are old enough to remember that.
Brian....

I read with great sadness the passing of Hamilton Jordan....your comments were touching and showed his great courage fighting the many battles he had to wage.

The first time I met Hamilton, President Carter had just been elected and he was the youngest Chief-of-Staff in White House history and I happened to be the youngest Chief-of-Staff for a Governor at that time.  Our state, Utah, while electing my boss, a Democratic Governor, had the distinction of giving President Carter the worst thumping of any state in the nation.  Needless to say we weren't carrying a lot of big sticks at the time!

The Governor and I were in Washington for the Inaguration, and so just a few days after we had a meeting at the White House--things as you can imagine were in a bit of an upheavel. I can remember fondly that freezing cold day, the Governor and I being at the White House gate as the Chairman of the Democatic Party was trying to get in at the same time.  He was refused entry as no one knew his name and he was on no list and to our amazement we were wisked in ahead of him despite out states poor showing and him sputtering away!

Our meeting with Hamilton was cordial and fun as he breezed in alone, no tie on, sleeves rolled up and a cup of coffee in a styrofoam cup---nothing pretentious about him as he sat on an empty desk.  "Hi I am Hamilton" he said "what can I do to help"  I am sure he was well aware that there wasn't much the most red of Republican states could do to help him, but yet, he was honest, sincere and in the end over the years, a great assistance to us in many ways.

Politics, unfortunately, today is about posturing, saying anything to win, mean spirited elections, egos, lack of moral compasses and so it was fun and an honor to serve at a time when there was some honestly, openness and directness around in the political world.  Hamilton represented that.

I will miss a true fighter and someone who brought some humility to his position at the White House in constrast to many of those before and too many after.  Hamilton thanks for the memories from one of those who admired all that you achieved and gave back.
When are you going to address the propaganda that you foisted on the American public through your use of defense contractor paid 'experts'?  You will explain one way or another.  You can come clean with your viewers now or let them see you squirm in front of a congressional committie.  We will get the truth out of you, Mr. Williams.  Even GE cannot stop a determined American public.  Your refusal to address this issue has cost you every bit of credibility you ever had.  One way or another, Mr.Williams, one way or another.
Brian, The news of your friend Hamilton Jordan's death saddened me.  I do remember him from the Carter Admin.
I want to get his best seller: No Such Thing as a Bad Day, for a close friend with constant backpain, and I will read it too.
See you on the evening news....
I recall those days of '76 when Ham Jerd'n made us so proud to be Georgians.  As you said, he was brash, he was irreverent and he could be sooooo funny.  My mom just adored him. I lost my mother to multiple myeloma 27 years ago.  She, too, was 63 years old.  But what an inspiration Mr. Jordan still is to thousands--to prove that today one can live for 22 years with such severe diagnoses is, in itself, miraculous.  My prayers go out to his family and friends.
As a fellow Georgian, I want to say
that was a fine tribute. Classy.
I'm new at this commenting by blog. As a 74 year old I do well on the computer. I watch Brian Williams nearly every night and very much enjoy his manner of presentation. I can't imagine that none of the living press has heard President Roosevelt's address when in dire economic times, warned that "what we must fear most is fear itself ". I know my quote is not accurate but his message was. What good are any of the networks or other media doing for the nation and it's people by continually telling us how bad it is? How about doing what you can to improve attitude and help us recover from this recession! There have been repeated hard times in the past and tough, optimistic attitudes have always succeeded in turning the cycle around. Why doesn't the media attempt to help. Maybe I'll feel better if I quit listening and watching !!!
As a recent cancer survivor I found the story especially touching, I haven't read the book but I plan on it. When you have such a terrible disease you have no choice but to be positive.

I've read thru the comments about the fuel costs. I've recently returned to work and I work 45 miles away. I can't switch jobs due to insurance issues. I'll never get another policy to cover me I think, or at least anything cancer related if God forbid it should come back. I've actually have had to forego my medications to cover my transportation costs. It doesn't seem right. I am now the working poor. These oil companies are fleecing America. I can't believe we live in a country where this is allowed to happen. I think the main problem is most of our countries leaders are in bed with the oil companies. I think their excuses are BS!!!!!!!
Brian,
I hope your new reports on fighting cancer will include information on alternative treatments for cancer.  I put my husband on treatments recommended in the book Cancer Free by Bill Henderson and he is now in remission from prostate cancer which had spread to the bone.
