Kennedy update

Posted: Saturday, May 17, 2008 4:41 PM by Ian Sager

By Lester Holt, NBC News Anchor

A line of reporters, cameras and satellite trucks is gathered in front of the emergency room at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, ready to report any news on the condition of Senator Edward Kennedy. The initial report was that he had suffered symptoms of a stroke, but a spokesman for his office later described it as "a seizure."  Little else, however, was immediately forthcoming. The information vacuum has left a lot of room for discussion about what he may have been stricken by, the causes, severity, and recovery. We will pick up our coverage this evening with Anne Thompson's reporting from Boston. Anne will walk us through exactly what we know while Dr. Nancy Snyderman will join me here in New York to discuss strokes and seizures, as well as the treatment Sen. Kennedy underwent last fall to unblock a major artery in his neck.

During this campaign cycle, Sen. Kennedy has been an active campaigner on behalf of Sen. Barack Obama. Lee Cowan will have more on that, and how all three major presidential candidates reacted to Kennedy's health scare.

We get a new view from the ground in cyclone-stricken Myanmar. NBC's Martin Fletcher managed to get inside the country where he will show us why a distribution bottle neck continues to deprive victims of what they need. Kevin Tibbles will share the story of a man who even though he lost both his legs, is hoping to break new ground on the Olympic running track.

Finally, if you miss tonight's live broadcast, I have some great, and long-awaited news. Starting this evening, a weekend edition of the Nightly News netcast is available. This allows you to watch the entire program here on your computer screen, or even on your iPod. On our Web site, nightly.msnbc.com, you'll find netcast information in the "Special series and related links" section, located just below the video player.

We'll look for you later, wherever you happen to be watching.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Happy Saturday to You!! I want to say that I enjoyed very much the piece on Weekend Today wbout you and your brother. Your brother was a real inspiration to you and does some fine flying in airplanes. Very nice piece!
Looking forward to Mr.Fletcher's report from Myanmar and I really hope those people get the necessary supplies they so desperately need.
Also, I hope Senator Ted Kennedy is going to be okay. Politics aside one always hopes a person will pull through okay.
Finally, It is great news that the entire Weekend Edition of Nightly News can be viewed on Netcast!
Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Holt. After the Preakness Stakes. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Thank you ladies for all your great comments about me going to Richard's lecture and book signing in Atlanta on June 5th! I will give a FULL REPORT TO EVERYONE!
Hi to all great ladies of the blog!
Be Well Always!
Dear Lester,

I'll be curious to hear more about Senator Kennedy's condition.  While a seizure is not necessarily indicative of a grave problem, it is a bit concerning that he has a history of a partially blocked carotid.  That's not something to mess around with.

I am so happy to hear that the weekend version of Nightly News will be available online!  I don't mean to whine, but many of us do wish the broadcast didn't get pre-empted so much.  Of course, we do enjoy watching you, specifically.  You are a real class act!

The signs of late spring are here - the Preakness Stakes will be history in just a little while, the honeysuckle is in bloom, AND I drove past about a billion yard sales during my travels this morning!  Yikes!

I'd like to leave a message for our frequent poster, Anna, in case it doesn't make it into yesterday's blog....

Anna:  I'm sorry that my remarks came off as unappreciative; I only meant to joke with you.  I was marveling at your ability to find all this great information!  You are much more adept than I!  You did inspire me, though, to do my own research, and that was how I was able to find out that Richard Engel is touring only 5 cities.  The source didn't specify which 5 cities, although you have already provided us with 2.  Of course, now I can't remember which website I even saw that on!  Anyway, I'm guessing the other 3 cities are Chicago, New York, and - I'm hoping - D.C.  Who knows?  If he does come to D.C., I hope to see you there!  (If not, I will have to join Celine in New York City.)  I'm sorry I gave you the wrong impression.  I thought you realized I'm a huge RE fan, too.  Keep the information coming!  You rock!  :-)

P.S. - Celine, say "hello" to Keyser Soze!  :-P

Lots of love to Lisa, Jackie, and Stephanie!
Hello, also, to Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt!
XOXO

It's terrific, Lester, that weekend editions of the Nightly News will also be available in podcast form. Here in the East, it will be a way to deal with those pesky preemptions by sports.
Hi Lester.  I beg to differ with what was just reported on the Saturday Evening News at 5:30PM. Ted Kennedy did not run for President when I think he wanted to and was young enough to do so.....simply because Rose Kennedy asked him not to.  She had lost her sons John(Jack) and Robert(Bobby), both to assinations, and Joe Jr. to the war....Teddy, was all she had left.  I know that she asked him to please not run, and everyone felt that way, at that time.  I remember well. People voiced it, openly...that if Teddy ran, they would assinate him, too.   I think he did right not to run.  Looking forward to The Mystery of the Crystal Skulls, tomorrow night on Sci-Fy, Lester. Fascinating subject, huh?
Although I wish senator Kennedy no "ill-will", come on, it was possibly a seizure! My handicapped daughter has 8-10 seizures a day sometimes! Never have we been air lifted to a hospital, nor have we been on the news. I realize that he is a senator, but their are REAL people in this world with similar, if not worse problems!
Anna, I'd posted to last nights blog, and just missed the cut off. I've found one more RE stop, San Francisco
June 11 here is the link:

http://www.marineclub.com/
Surly there will be more East Coast stops. Updates as they come in!

Odd thought from a baby boomer, it's hard to realize that the "baby Kennedy" is 76. Here hoping for a speedy recovery, We need him on the trail this fall!
Mr. Holt,

It's about time they started to show the weekend edition of Nightly News. Just because it isn't the weekday, doesn't mean the news stops rolling. I'm glad to know you'll be on the internet if I miss any weekend broadcasts in the future. It's sad to think that today we could have lost a American political icon. I hope Mr. Kennedy has a good recovery and everything goes well.
Good Evening Mr.Holt, Well, the horse named "Big Brown has now won two of the three races in the Triple Crown. I hope he can win the third! It was a good race especially near the end when he just took off down the track. Very good race!
Now on to the broadcast. The report by Mr.Fletcher was sad and disturbing because those people in Myanmar really need aid now. All those without food, water and other necessities are desperate and I hope the government allows aid to come into the country. Some has been allowed, but certainly not enough. A terrible situation and I hope it changes for the better.
Now the report by Mr.Mullen concerning the earthquake in China was very sad to see too. So many villages just wiped out and people anxious to find loved ones in the rubble alive. It must be agonizing for those waiting and also painstaking work for the rescue workers. I hope more people are found alive because everytime someone is found it is a sign of hope. I hope more people are found alive.
I do hope Senator Kennedy recovers because that is a very serious condition. Hopefully, he can return home soon to continue to get well.
Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt! See you on Sunday! Peace to you and to all!

Hi to all great ladies of this blog!
Be Well always!
Hi Laurel:  Don't forget I am a newbie here so I don't want to go around upsetting folks.   Some of you ladies laid claim to Richard way, way before me.   I know my place in the back of the line.  :)(Chuckles)

Like Matt said one day this is a friendly place on the web.  We do have our contrarians that show up and that always causes some concern but for the most part people are friendly and civil here and I appreciate the intelligent discussion and information.   I just freezed some veggies today.  I would have never done that unless I read it here.

Okay, Matt or anyone, how do you submit a NewsVine question?   Also, Matt, how did you know there was a new Vine this week?  I have something on my mind besides ties, Williamsgate, Generalsgate and media bias to ask Brian.  Fingers crossed once I know how to send a question in.  Maybe if we all commit to sending in a question a week we can get Brian to vine more.

I finally found the NewsVine and have a comment for the NBC Cameraperson this week.   Do they provide cocktails at 4:30 PM at NBC Studios?  Wow!   I would think you all would start partying at 7 PM on a Friday night.   That video was all over the place.  I thought I was watching a home made video from my Uncle Ed.   Please Cameraperson would you please put that camera on a tripod next time. :)

Thanks Lester for the broadcast via the web!  Love, love, love it!  I am usually out on Saturday nights and Sunday eating dinner before 60 Minutes.   Sorry I am a real news junkie.

Bests to all even the cameraperson!
I find Lester Holt to be the epitome of good journalism and fair reporting.  I look forward to the reporting he contributes to NBC...My thoughts are, also, with Senator Kennedy...Praying for his recovery, and continued patriotic influence he contributes to our country....Thank you

Hi Lester
I was sorry to hear about Senator Kennedy illness and pray he gets better soon. Now one might say why would he give all his medical information while McCain refuses to give his. Americans never knew how sick late President Reagan was while others ran the White House.

I read about the way the US has been trying to get in Burma and in some ways take over. I really don't blame the Burma Government for not trusting the US. This is an example of what happens when a person isn't trusted. Americans might look at it differently but the World has seen how the Bush Administration has illegally invaded Iraq on false pretences and the lies that are told about Iran.

As Isreal celebrates 60 years peace seems far away. I read that Isreal demands that Iran not have Nuclear Weapons. One could ask why a country that's only 60 years old has Nuclear Weapons with not problem.  I think of the Hatfields and the McCoys as the problem with Isreal/Palestinians.  I know George H. W. Bush wishes his son George W. would not talk so much, as it only brings back the Family secrets. Prescott Bush not only got rich from the Hitler era but also was involved in a plot to assassinate FDR. George H. W. Bush made his riches with oil deals and even fought to stop the Civil Rights Bill from being passed.  Not a Family record to be proud of and sometimes it's better not to bring it up.

Hillary really has some die heart voters who wont quit. I thought I was the only one but I got to meet many woman who also realize she is the best candidate in the pack. No need for the Media to keep pushing up the lie that McCain isn't connected to Bush. There is a fund raiser in Arizona with the two best buddies John McCain/George W. Bush. Yes other then out right lies and flip flop John is getting his instructions from a President who brought down the USA in just 7 years.

The shocker this weekend was Chicago gas prices are higher then those out here in California.  I also noticed how the Media says we get oil from Iran also. Now the Saudi have the US right were they planned to have us. Any oil you want all you have to do is pay for it. Don't look for President Chavez to help after the way the US treated him.  I watched Russia, India, China and other countries make oil deals for their citizens while the US Government was stealing, lying and committing crimes all over the world and in America. No wonder we're broke not one has been working for the best interest of the American people.

Have a great evening all and a special XOXO to my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anna and Matt

I'm so happy that the weekend edition is now avaliable online! I hate how sports takes presedent over the news, but understand it.

Thanks and keep up the great work NBC
I enjoyed your news today. I regularly watched your news over CS channel/
I am thrilled the Nightly News is Online; i just
watched it as I missed NBC Nightly News  because I was with my daughter and and her friends on Saturday.
I am very impressed with the back-up plan, Mr. Holt.

Lesley, my daughter, warned me, "Don't talk
politics, Mom."  and so I was on my best behavior
but a friend of her's was not.  "I just had a
call from Bill CLinton (recording) and I would
loved to have said "I would not have taken the call"
but I bit my tongue.  Anyway, the Kentucky Primary
is on Tuesday and I hope the people of Kentucky do
not join Clinton's bandwagon on the day its wheels fall off.

Well, ladies, I'm bummed.  Maybe the RE book tour won't stop in my area, after all.  Anyway, I found the website that indicated it was only a 5 city tour.  It's called libraryjournal.com.  Here's the blurb:

Engel, Richard. War Journal. S. & S. Jun. 2008. 320p. ISBN 978-1-4165-6304-4. $28.
From NBC News journalist Engel, who’s outlasted all other TV journalists in Iraq. With a five-city tour.

So, Atlanta, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, and counting.  Woe is me.

XOXO
Laurel and Bloggers:

Chicago --- June 2008

http://www.chicagotribune.com/about/custom/events/printersrow/chi-printersrowauthors-htmlstory,0,2085018.htmlstory

Okay, I will dish.  I have been trying to plan a summer vacation and have a credit on Southwest that I have use by June 30.

Most of my traveling friends and family are broke this year (RE down, stock market down and food and gas up, up) and the other half are scared to death to spend any money.  They are feeling gas at $5 per gallon and they are holding on to those Yankee dollars so tight they may have a coronary in the process.

So I thought what the heck shall a girl do for a summer weekend.  I'll go on vacation somewhere to a book signing and check out the city.  I travel to DC and NYC all the time so going by June 30 is no problem.   Meanwhile I am just Googling away trying to match cities to Southwest Airlines routes.

Laurel, don't despair yet.   Keep checking www.interbridge.com.    At this site you can find out if your favorite news man in doing Colbert or the Daily Show.   Then just keep trying to get Colbert or Daily Show tickets.  I have been to both before and the shows are a blast.   Sometimes you get day of tickets if you camp out early enough.  Many of the authors will autograph books outside the back doors or after the show.   Most all are very, very nice.  I have had two authors that I will never buy again.

Now I might be wrong on this one but I am feeling Richard on Kurtz and Charlie Rose again and for some, some reason I am feeling him on Larry King.   That might be a long shot because they have 2 reporters in Iraq right now.

Keep searching ladies!  Bests to all!

Happy Sunday, everyone!  I'm writing in this space, since there is no Sunday blog, as yet.

Anna & Claudia:  Thanks for the additional info!

Celine:  For your "Verbal Kint" fix, Kevin Spacey will be appearing on the following programs:

Monday, May 19th - David Letterman
Wednesday, May 21st - Live with Regis & Kelly
Thursday, May 22nd - Conan O'Brien

He is promoting his new film on HBO, "Recount," which tells the story of the 2000 presidential election - specifically the resolution of the Florida voting debacle.  Should be good.  Unfortunately, I no longer get HBO.  Long story.  :-)

Btw, I slept through SNL last night.  Was it good?

All:  Tavis Smiley will interview Governor Mike Huckabee on Monday, May 19th.  Should be lots to talk about!  Sorry I missed Meet the Press this morning!  Tavis's other guest is Donna Summer!  What a strange combination!  Ha, ha.

Good night to my friends Lisa, Jackie, and Stephanie, Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt.
XOXO
As a Cuban-American and a faithful viewer of NBC Nighly News, I was very much disappointed with your closing report Sunday night about the Cuban circus.
Is NBC trying to cultivate empathy with the American public for a regime wich has impoverished their people and their ethos. Do you find favor with your sponsors for this effort? Why don't you show how Cubans prefer to rish drowning at sea rather than continue with the cruel deprivation imposed by the dictators of a failed socio-economic system; or, that food and medicines are taken from the people to provide for foreign tourists?
My mother had brain cancer. Had the same treatment. She was dead in 3 months after having her seizure. He will be dead before election day.
