It's just too much. Pick up any newspaper, watch any evening newscast, and it's enough to force you to look away: Myanmar, China, (the Democrats), the price of oil, the ants in Texas, the oil pipeline fire in Nigeria, the Polygamists. I could go on. Turn to the sports pages and you'll read about the investigation into whether the juggernaut New England Patriots have been spying on their opponents for years. It has a staggering cumulative effect -- all of it -- which is why I (unaccustomed as I am to quoting myself) started Monday's broadcast with, "It's enough to make you wonder about our world."

Now it has spread to Oreos. Please read this sweeping, Churchillian rant in the U.K. Daily Mirror. The Brits are feeling attacked. This is a gem. It takes a lot to work Churchill and Neville Chamberlain references into our current national dialogue (note to radio talk-show hosts -- you'd be well-advised to bone up on history -- even the Wikipedia version -- before coming on television to discuss it,) but if it was ever gonna happen, this was the week for it.

A great season of SNL comes to an end tomorrow night, hosted by Steve Carell of "The Office." It promises to be a momentous evening, especially given the much-rumored cameo by John McCain. I just might drop by rehearsals... for old time's sake... on my way out of the building tonight. Needless to say: cancel any plans you might have had for Saturday night.

I hope you have a good weekend. We have a great broadcast planned for you tonight.

they fear for their biscuits? they fear the Harry-second-removed(or whatever number)-from the throne generation will forsake all for the Oreo? bugger, already!
Brian you right it's all around us. George W. Bush should never say a word about the Nazi's or the Contra Affair. It will only make Americans know that his GrandFather and Father were up to their necks in the criminal evil activity of the pass. The Bush Family made their Riches with the pass Dictators. Even Dick Cheney recruited Osama Bin Laden.

I must say this even if people don't like it. The Saudis are great poker players and played the US and won. It was so sad to watch a US President beg for the 4th time the Saudis to increase oil. Now we get oil from Iran, Venezuela and Iraq.  Cheney did his begging for extra oil and was turned down and sent home.  China doesn't seem to have a problem making oil deals these days. Bush/Cheney said the US would have cheap oil after the removal of Saddam, didn't happen. This is how History has shown countries down fall as Leaders. Rome comes to mind as it fell because of the same action done by the US Government.

Oh the good old days before 2000 when the American Dream was alive and well plus the World respected the United States as a Great Leader and example to the rest of the World.  Only to see the mighty have fallen in just 7 yeas. We hear Paulson say how great things are and the White House says these are the best years Americans have ever had.  Reality check time. We're in a recession about to go in another Great Depression. The Foreign Investors are buying up the USA. The President aka boy who cried wolf is crying for himself. Americans no longer look for the American Dream but rebate checks just to get by. Law Makers are crooks and stabbing each other in the back. Three candidates for President, 1. can't remember, 2. gives a great speech but not experience and 3. qualified, experienced, strong and could bring the US out of this recession but she's not a man.

I was glad to hear about gays getting equal rights here in California. As an American one would think all Americans were given equal rights. Ellen is going to now have the wedding she always dreamed of. I just can't find myself being prejudice against anybody as God isn't prejudice. Some Christians think differently I guess.

To my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and Matt have a great weekend.

To all have a great weekend and stay safe.
Mr.Williams,
Any chance of a cameo by you tomorrow night?
Bill Kelly
Good Evening Mr.Williams, There is certainly alot of bad news in the world today with all the storms, high gas prices, pipeline fire, ants swarming in Texas ect... One just wants to say as the title of your posting says, Make it Stop".
But I just read something posted in last night's Daily Nightly post by Anna that made my entire year. Richard, my ultimate favorite journalist as all of you know from my gushing is coming to Atlanta on his book tour! I am so excited!! He is coming to the Carter Center library on Thursday June 5,2008 for a lecture and book signing! Wow! I say to you Anna you are great for finding that out! I might actually get to say hello to him! I certainly hope so! I cannot wait to see him! I just wanted to say how happy I am that he's coming!!
Mr.Williams, I agree with you that with all the bad news it makes one wonder about our world. I hope things do get better as the months progress. Looking forward to the broadcast. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all the great ladies of this blog!
THANK YOU ANNA!! I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE RICHARD!!
Be well always!!
Oreos simply don't go as well with tea as Digestives! They wont sell over here.
Did anyone else catch the story out of Canada about the Tim Horton's employee (kind of like Dunkin Donuts) who was fired for giving a young child a Timbit, like a munchkin.  One Timbit costs all of @16 cents.  Let's see good will for giving a precious child a Timbit, invaluable ---- bad press for firing the employee PRICELESS.  To be fair, the employee has since been offered her job back ONLY AFTER this became a huge media story.

btw....as many know, many of our reality shows are based on British programs, well watch out folks our zany Brits are starting a new reality show called Naked Office where employees are to come in to work for Naked Fridays.  As the article says, this is taking casual Friday too far.

Happy weekend to all!
Chris Mathews thinks the USS Cole happened under President Bush? He might want to check Wikipedia too. That Kevin James guy is annoying, (can't stand screamers) but I guess you couldn't get Michael Medved. I'd put him up against any liberal any day. The format seemed a little off too. Isn't it suppose to be one token half crazed Denny Crane type conservative verses 3 equally loud lying liberals?

There you go again bringing down the wrath of "the party" by including  (the Democrats) in that list. Will you ever learn?

Lewis Black was on Letterman a few weeks ago, and had the best idea I've heard in a few years. He'd just returned from a USO tour and was so impressed with the people in our military he joked we should have a coup. Can we vote for something like that? How about finding 534 more like the wounded vet you profiled last night, and start a 3rd party? I'm really tired of all these people we have now. OK not all, but for the sake of starting completely over I'd go with the "band aid wound party"

Back to listening to a couple of free audiobook files. The operational manual for the democrat party "1984" and what I thought was the founding ideas of the Republican party "The federalist papers"
Valid point, Mr. Williams.  You left out the hopla over the doomed gay marriages in California that'll definitely be overturned by the conservative majority on the US Supreme Court which, raises the issue of why the liberals in California are doing this to themselves.  The liberals oppose divisiveness and turn around and push divisive issue like that which, makes no sense at all that's for sure.  All the best with today's and future broadcasts.
My son, a political science major at UCONN, said he spent an hour researching Neville Chamberlain after viewing the segment in question. If nothing else, it had educational value for those willing to learn from it. Unfortunately, it didn't appear that the radio host learned anything from it.
Dear Brian,

Enjoy SNL.  I can't stay up that late anymore.  It's the old age, I think.  :-)

One need only read this opinion piece from yesterday's Washington Post to understand why Hillary Clinton supporters like me are so disgusted with the media:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/14/AR2008051403090.html

Chris Matthews should supply boxing gloves on his show.  The only time I've ever seen that man calm is when his lovely wife, Kathleen, interviewed him on Hardball, about the release of his latest book.  She totally turned him into mush.

Anna:  I gotta ask - are you Richard Engel's publicist, or what?  How do you find this stuff?  My "research" tells me he is only going on a 5 city tour.  Atlanta, Beverly Hills, three more to go.

Lots of love to Lisa, Jackie, and Stephanie.  XOXO
It's just not enough.  You turn on any network news program and you will not find any stories that call into question the actions of those networks.  Instead you find stories about Oreos and SNL.  Gosh, maybe I should be writing to SNL about the Pentagon Propaganda Generals. Later.
Ms. Rawlings (and Bush) raise some interesting points: Why DID Prescott Bush do business with the Nazis?  Why DID George H. W. Bush as vice president mastermind the Iran-Contra deal?  Maybe Bush wasn't talking about Obama but about his own family.
I must be the only one in the states who doesn't like Oreos. Blech.  Gimme a good digestive any day.

Be strong, Brits, resist the Oreo!
Never thought I'd say this... Tonight I LOVE Chris Matthews. You all know what ROTFLMAO means I hope!

Lisa, For heavens sake, when you get to meet Richard be sure and mention the blog, he only knows you by name after all. It'll be primary day here, I won't get home til late, so I  expect a full report. Give him 2 hugs too, yours ,and one for the rest of us. I'm almost as excited for you as you are!

Brian, a story request please, there is an excellent article on the front page of MSNBC today on the growing plight of those who depend on food stamps. What it fails to mention, and most people don't know, is that Food stamp funding is part of the Farm bill. The very same one that is at risk of veto. Never mind "millionaire" farmers, food stamps, school lunches, and several other "safety net" food programs are at covered under this bill.

Just in case there's no Weekend Nightly you all have a great weekend. It has finally warmed up here somewhere west of New Jersey, I'm going hiking!
"Partioned Personal Work Spaces"!??!?!  Hilarious.
I loved the shots of you giving the deadpan looks
from your own cubicle.

As a former 'prairie dog' now working happily from
home..thanks!
Hi Lisa:

Glad you are excited about Richard's tour in Atlanta!

Hi Laurel:

Sorry for the shameless promotion of Richard.  I didn't mean to offend anyone.  Just thought everyone would like to know. I just like his style.   I am not working for him as his publicist nor am I related to him.

I think he is a super great reporter. He has made a huge personal sacrifice to live and work abroad to deliver the unvarnished truth.   Plus I love books and read about a book at week.  I have 100's of autographed first edition books.  It is a natural fit for me.   I know how the publishers work.

I will not post any more engagements.  I don't want people to feel uncomfortable.   I just thought oh well, we have Matt and Jackie in CA and Lisa in Atlanta they may want to swing over and see him.

I just Googled Richard Engel & Book Tour & Richard Engel & 2008.    Wikipedia listed the Beverly Hills tour and then I was thinking about Atanta and I just hit good luck.   I had no idea he was only doing 5 engagements.  You had more information than me.

P.S. Thanks for the uplifting "Making a Difference Story tonight."

Bests to all!
Your story on the 40th birthday of the office cubicle reminded me of a visit from a colleague in 1999.  I had a modest sized office in Atlanta which was large enough for a conference table.  He was born in India during the time of the British Empire and educated in England.  He spent his whole life in academia and was still teaching at a university in Miami.  The size of offices are very important in the academic world and, when he saw mine, he remarked "Your office is worthy of a man of your stature".  I couldn't help but thinking that a man of your stature deserves an office rather than a "module".
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another fine broadcast this evening. The report from Ian Williams concerning the earthquake recovery in China shows how many people were effected by this awful quake. Seeing the massive devastation is so very sad and hearing the amount of homeless and killed is heartwrenching. One wouldn't know where to begin to start clearing away debris, but the soldiers are trying to make progress each day. It is good that some supplies will be delivered this weekend for the people, but it will take a very long time for the recovery. I do hope more survivors are found. I will say that Ian has done a fine job reporting on this quake all week and hopefully there will be good news to report of more people found alive.
On another note the report by Mr.Taibbi about the GI bill headed to the Senate hopefully will get passed. These soldiers have sacrificed so much in their tours of duty they should receive benefits for education. I agree with the statement that it should match the original because the sacrifices have not changed. God Bless all our brave servicemen and women.
The anniversary of the cubicle is somewhat humorous especially when you said the employees are like "prairie dogs" when they poke their heads up from the desks. Seeing you at your desk working diligently was nice Mr.Williams. Somehow I thought you had a large corner office looking out over New York City. You deserve one! Anyway, all those hardworking NBC News employees all gathering information for the news was nice to see!
Finally, the "Making a Difference" segment was truly nice this evening. All those airline employees working on those quilts for children in the medical center was very heartwarming. It was really great to see all those quilts lining the arena. What a wonderful project and all done with love. Great piece! Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Hope you have a wonderful weekend! By the way I enjoyed seeing you on with Conan! I will try to watch SNL! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
All have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you so much Anna!
Be well always all the great ladies of this blog!
Another thought: If this were 75 years ago Bush, like his grandfather and Henry Ford among others, would be supporting the fascists as important allies in the crusade against the godless communists who wanted to take away their property.  Appeasement? Support is the more appropriate word!
The liberals oppose divisiveness? You really aren't paying attention Jamie.  That's been a pattern for the last 2 or 3 elections. Maybe more? A Governor, a mayor, a judge does something like that just before an election. Then they get to paint all republicans as homophobes even though democrats vote against it too. As "hopeless" as things are suppose to be for Republicans I say we go out with a laugh. Back it and then turn around and paint Obama and Hillary as homophobes for not backing gay marriage. We've already seen another old Liberal stereotype of Republicans shattered. Turns out there are racist and sexist in democrat ranks oh my. Matter of fact they've damaged America's reputation around the world so bad a special U.N. human rights investigator will visit the United States this month to probe racism, an issue that has forced its way into the race to secure the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. tsk tsk tsk
Claudia: Thanks for the tips on flying it's been a long while for me. But I am ready with my earphone, Brian Williams NBC hat, Vote Hillary shirt and light luggage. Yes I'm traveling light so I can shop with the kids money. I'll let you know when I leave for my vacation.

David: History can't be changed even if we choose to lie. The present and the future can change if we learn from out mistakes.  Many well known Families got Rich on the hardships of others. Prescott Bush make millions with the Nazi's and George H. W. Bush continued with oil as he even made friends with Saudi Arabia. Now you might not remember the 60's but Daddy Bush was against the Civil Rights Bill. So history of how far people have gone and what they have done and can't take back. What's truly sad is how much damage George W. Bush had done in 7 years.
Rev. Wright spoke of factual American history we can't change, but Rev. Huckabee's comments about Senator Obama would lead to a sick person completing his so call joke.  I hope George W. Bush doesn't keep bringing up topics that will open up the terrible things the Bush Family would like to not answer to. When JFK was assinatated I learned that Prescott Bush was part of the group that plotted to kill President FDR. History isn't always pretty.

have a great weekend all
Dear Brian,  that nasty comment Huckabee made about Obama was despicable.  That noise sounded like a gunshot, and then Huckabee said Obama fell off the chair.  I have always said Huckabee is an evil man who hides behind the cloak of religion.  I am not a big fan of Obama, but Huckabee's remark was disgusting and evil.  Also to Jackie, I am a big fan of yours, Your blog was so true and meaningful.  Especially your comments about the three candidates.  1. can't remember 2. gives a great speech but is not experienced & 3. qualified, experienced, strong and could bring this country out of this recession, but she is not a man.  And I also agree that we are in a recession and about to go into another Great Depression.
Hello, Brian.  Why is everyone saying Mr. Williams?  Well, anyway, Brian, after reading your post titled Make It Stop, I have even more high regard for you.  Not sure what the Oreo thing in the UK is about, but, hope it is not some new threat to one's health since I do like Oreos.
Would like to comment on some of the serious points, but like you, it turns my tummy south and is not good for our health.  To dwell on negatives.  For instance, I too, heard the references to Prescott Bush and the Hitler regime or dictator of Germany, back in 2004 during the 04 pres. campaign.  Couldn't tell if it was propaganda or not.  But the idea is just too difficult to retain in the brain for very long.  When thinking of where we are today.
Brian,

The comments by Mike Huckabee give us a glimpse of the real man. Americans were intelligent to eliminate him from the process early.

I have been a secondhand shopper in Houston for 30 years. Your newscaster, Ms. Shamlian, is favorie around town. I was glad to see her on your news program.  Did she move to New York? Is she still married? That's personal,I know, but I am still single.  If she did move, what a loss for Texas.

You are NBC's finest.

PAUL
Laurel--  Stay up or record SNL! Bill Kelly stole my thought in his post above. I think our anchor is hinting about a possible cameo. Or he knows it's a really, really good show! I vote for the former!

You also stole a thought--but I didn't have time to post last night after reading that WP article. For readers, it is about misogyny and really is a must read. Thanks for the link.

Instead of boxing gloves, Chris Matthews should supply laptops that run Google--so guests can check their facts before they open their mouths. Did that exchange remind you of recent events here?!!

And again, we think alike--re: Richard--I was thinking where DOES Anna get her info?!! Anna??!! I'm looking for NYC--I can get over there. And Lisa, you really have to tell us all about it when you go see Richard!!

So what is it they say about "great minds", Laurel?!

Best to the "usual suspects"--who now know my all time favorite movie!

Good weekend all. You too Brian!
Thank you for your Friday story about the strong market for second-hand merchandise.  Meanwhile, you did not even mention the continued suffering being endured by the people of Myanmar.  But at least we now know all about used clothing and furniture.  Keep up the good work.  (Interestingly, in Brian's blog, he says that if you "watch any evening newscast", you'll hear about Myanmar.  I guess he meant any newscast but his.)

On your Thursday broadcast, John Yang reported on President Bush's statements ridiculing Barack Obama for saying that he would consider meeting with the president of Iran.  Then we were told about Senator Joseph Biden's response to Bush, which included what Brian had described as "a word we can't use on this broadcast".  That word was shown on screen as "B******T".  A few months ago, you reported on the perjury trial and extramarital affair of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.  In that story, you showed text messages sent between Kilpatrick and his chief-of-staff (and girlfriend) Christine Beatty.  Among the text messages you showed was one that clearly contained the same four-letter word that you replaced with asterisks on today's broadcast.  So why was it acceptable to show that word in the Kilpatrick story, but not acceptable in the Bush/Obama/Biden story?  This isn't a rhetorical question--I would really like someone from NBC to address this point.  (I won't hold my breath, though.)
Hi Brian
As always superb newscasting, keep up the good work.
NOW to the important stuff!
Any decent Brit (and I like to think I am one!) does not read 'The Mirror'. Also I live in the south of England and we have been lucky to be able to buy Oreo's for years. Since my first visit stateside I fell in love with Oreo's, Hershey, and a lot more!
Believe me at least your country knows how to eat! Most of our food is ****!
My only problem with buying Oreo's here is the price they command!
To finish can I please ask "May we have some of your CHEAP Gas here?" Our gallon is roughly $10, does that cheer you up?
Fantastic Nightly News
Mike Lyall
Brian,
When are you going to fully report and disclose your role as Donald Rumsfeld's schill-you know- when you gave your military analyst general "friends" air time to propagandize the American people?  You are a full participant in this by not asking the difficult questions which is a complete and utter abdication of your responsibilities as a "journalist".  Now you are making it worse by ignoring the fiasco as if it is just going to go away.  Brian,  please show some dignity and some class and report this story to the American people...remember them?  When this chapter of history is written you will be a footnote of how not to conduct yourself as a "journalist".
Still haven't watched Nightly Farce since this came out - All I see is a person too weak and arrogant to accept responsibility for their actions.  Sad indeed Brian.  IT IS ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU WONDER ABOUT OUR WORLD!
I am addressing my comments to Anna, who posts here regularly....

Dear Anna,

I'm sorry that my remarks came off as unappreciative; I only meant to joke with you.  I was marveling at your ability to find all this great information!  You are much more adept than I!  You did inspire me, though, to do my own research, and that was how I was able to find that Richard Engel is going on only a 5 city tour.  The source didn't specify which 5 cities, although you have already provided us with 2.  Of course, now I can't remember which website I even saw that on!  Anyway, I'm guessing the other 3 cities are Chicago, New York, and - I'm hoping - D.C.  If he does come to D.C., I hope to see you there!  (If not, I will have to join Celine in New York City.)  I'm sorry I gave you the wrong impression.  I thought you realized I'm a huge RE fan, too.  Keep the information coming!  You rock!  :-)

Laurel

P.S. - Celine, say "hello" to Keyser Soze!  :-P
@ Matt and Jackie:

I hope you all were not over at the Church festival this weekend.  I can't believe what the world is coming to these days.

@ Jackie:

I am not sure if you are allowed to wear political shirt in air anymore. You may wish to check with the carrier.   I have seen a few situations where shirts have had to be taken off in the bathroom and reversed inside out in order to fly.   Disney World does this all the time around the world.   Any
t-shirt with a message is subject to censorship at the parks and by the airlines.   Good luck with the Hillary shirt just be prepared to cover it up at the airport.  Sorry!

Bests!
Anna, post away, I think Laurel was just amazed, as I was, that you came up with the info so quick. I have to admit, I thought of him as that nice young man who reported from Iraqi until i got so active on this blog.
Then I happen to note that Web Only piece where he went back to the hotel where he'd been on the first day That was when I joined the fan club. What an amazing piece of work that video was!!
I did find one more, in San Francisco June 11
http://www.marineclub.com/  is the link for it.
So where are the other 2?
Hey there Brian,
I like your presentation as an anchor. Thanks for what you bring to professional news media.
I must say that I am moving on from msnbc.com after a few months of receiving my daily news here. The reason is that I have had several of my comments, especially in the First Read section, not posted. I moved here from CNN before coming here for the very same reason after having a nice email exchange with an executive producer encouraging me that they have problems with their ticker but they were working on it. Frankly, I do not have time to be wasting my time responding thoughtfully to a particular article and then not have it posted. For this to happen once in a while is forgivable but to have it happen frequently causes me to move on. I will be getting my daily news stories from washingtonpost.com from here on out. I will still tune in from time to time to see your telecast but online is my main source for news.
Thanks and God bless you!
Brian-
If only your mind was big as your head. You and NBC are the biggest bunch of wimps, you have been a silent witness to the worst 7 plus years in American history and you only know how to keep on spouting the Bush/McCain lies and act as a casual observer to the destruction of our Constitution. It would appear that the only one with any guts is Keith Olberman at MSNBC. You are one sorry excuse for a journalist.
Brian when you finally are forced to come before congress (under oath) lets hope you tell the truth about your generals/businessmen and there campaign to deceive the American people.
Mr. Williams.  First, how about looking at the glass as half full.  Yes there are some bad things going on, but there are also a lot of good things going on.  Second, having watched Richard Engel's interview with George Bush on 5/18, I plead with you to keep this guy pigeon-holed on assignment.  It was obvious that he's not cut out for one on one interviews.  His timing and delivery were way off and George Bush ate him alive.  No more one-on-one interviews for Richard Engel, please!
I havae tried to contact Brian Williams for the best and most important news story he has ever covered and can not get in contact. I'm sick of all the bad news and hand wringing and the TV news casters failing to give time to stories that could really make a difference. TV has such great potential yet it is seldom used. Part of it is perhaps no guts. I'll be happy to put you on a story that can make a real difference. Contact me. James Miller.
You have been saying for months; Clinton has lost.  Clinton's last stand; but, she keeps winning.

Obama don't need or want the blue collar vote, the women's vote, the hispanics vote; how do you think he will be elected.
Dear Brian, Last year the King of Saudi Arabia said it as did the the CEO of Exxon, oil companies nor OPEC set oil prices, WALL Street does it. Stop the Wall steet speculating/terrorism and fuel/oil will fall to where they need to be. Re-regulate the industry. Thoughts?
