Keeping our council

Time is short today as I'm just back from the Council on Foreign Relations, where after a brief lunch I moderated a lecture/interview/q&a session with my fellow members with our featured speaker, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the Republic of Korea. I had the unusual experience today of informing the Secretary General of a bombing in India that had been reported in the few minutes it took him to travel from the U.N. to the Council. Word arrived via my Blackberry, and he was obviously disturbed to hear it, especially the component of today's bombings that apparently involved remote-control detonators activated by motorcyclists driving by.

Tonight we'll be updating Nightly News -- no matter where you live, no matter where you watch us -- to reflect the results from West Virginia. Politico has a good viewers guide to tonight's Primary.

Yesterday in this space I told the story of Picher, Oklahoma. Tonight, our own Don Teague, at my request, has traveled there -- and will deliver the television version of that same story. And Rehema Ellis will end our broadcast tonight with a story about one family's service that you will want to see.

Forget WV.  The result is as close to a foregone conclusion as these things get.  Hillary is immensely more popular than Obama there.

The race to watch tonight is the Mississippi special election for the House.  It's a heavily red district (it went 62-37 for Bush in 2004), but surprisingly it's looking like a real race.  The R's lost the two special elections so far (both in pretty red districts), so who knows it's not impossible it happen a third time.  Either way (the trend continues or the R's staunch the bleeding) it's an interesting story.

Will be nice to see Don Teague's segment, I think we collectively wanted to hug that soldier.

Hoping that the coverage of the West Virginia primary is fair and balanced.  In my opinion, many people especially in the media, seem to have forgotten that Senator Clinton has the right to continue her campaign right up and into the nominating convention if she so choses.  Any person who meets the requirements to be a candidate has that right and it should not be diminished because others find her campaign at this point to be an inconvenience.  Given the number of surprises that have occurred throughout the presidential campaign season, anything is still possible.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Certainly terrible to learn about the bombing in India. And it must have been unusual for you to inform the Secretary General. Too much violence in these regions. I hope for the days of peace. Looking forward to Mr.Teague's report this evening from Pitcher,Oklahoma. With regards to another Tuesday of primary coverage this time in West Virginia, it has been a long election process and I am really looking forward to when we can finally vote in November. I agree with Amanda in that as she says, "anything is still possible." Time will tell as the months progress. Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all great ladies of this blog!
Be well always!
With all the terrible disasters that have happened over the past couple of days/weeks I am really upset that the canidates are not mentioning more about what is going on in the world.   Foreign policy and aid are becoming more important.   The war in Iraq is an important agenda item, but also is the role the new President will play in helping other countries in need.  How we help people abroad and here at home are what matters.  Is Hillary on the same page as her husband was when he was in the white house?  How will Obama be perceived outside the US?  Will McCain act quickly in an natural disaster?  I guess only time will tell?
I write this before the broadcast, so I don't know if you'll be covering this issue.  I just watched a piece on the local news about gas prices and whether we should be threatening the Saudis to produce more oil.  It really is way beyond time we got smart about energy policy.  If we had gotten serious about alternative fuels back in the 70's, we'd be in much better shape now.  I filled up this morning (the second time in three days) as the attendant was jumping the price of regular from $3.85 to $3.99 per gallon. I  can't imagine what it will be next week.
Hi Brian
It's early but I'm watching the results for my girl Hill. I do respect the other candidates I just picked the one most qualified without color, popularity or Party.

Brian many bloggers over the pass 7 years have questioned the lack of fair/balanced reporting. Yes we know the truth comes out but now the Pentagon Propaganda Department let the cat out of the bag. Check this out:
Media quoted ‘military analysts’ over 4,500 times since 2002.
Yes I know you explained how you pick the evening news that is reported. But this information will help you understand why people don't trust news anymore. Your doing the right thing by saying where this information comes from so viewers don't think it's NBC. This Administration has been so corrupt more crimes will soon come to light.  Keep Kelly giving honest facts about McCain, I know Andrea is on a Republican mission so I don't look for her to be fair/balanced. That should help the NBC Executives know why your show has the top rating as you have taken steps to make sure your not part of the propaganda Media news.

I finally realized why you look so comfortable with Obama during interviews.  Both of you have the same social style which is Amiable, as Hillary is a Driver.  I'm amiable and my daughter is a driver and it is so funny when we discuss and issues.

The best to my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and Matt

See you at 6:30 pm
Brian,

This is my third attempt since last Friday to post a message acceptable to the censors of your blog.
How will your viewers become informed about your role in this pentagon planned "Psy Op", if you do not disclose information about your role in it and you censor feedback about it on your blog?

You have refused to broadcast to your viewers the revelation about NBC nightly news allowing two retired US generals who invested in and served on the boards of defense contractors, and received pentagon briefings exclusive to TV network consultants who agreed to "carry water" for the pentagon's tilt on invasion of Iraq and war operations.

Media Matters covers this story thoroughly, today:
http://mediamatters.org/items/200805130001?f=h_top#

"Media Matters for America today exclusively released an accounting of the analysts identified in the Times exposé and their more than 4,500 appearances and quotations on ABC, ABC News Now, CBS, CBS Radio Network, NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, CNN Headline News, Fox News, and NPR. The release documents just how far and wide the Pentagon program reached"
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Regarding the broadcast. The report from Ian Williams from China showing the utter devastation caused by the earthquake was so very sad. Especially hearing about all the young children and teenagers hurt or killed. Seeing the parents of schoolchildren trapped under the rubble of the school was heartwrenching. There is always a glimmer of hope when a person is rescued from the rubble and I really hope more are found alive. So many people lost and so much destruction. It is going to take a long time to rebuild many of the structures that crumbled. With all the heavy rain falling it makes the rescues more difficult, but I hope more people can be found alive and well. Time is so very precious in this situation. On another region it is good some flights of supplies are getting into Myanmar, but much, much more is needed. Hopefully, all the water from the US Navy ship will reach the people desperate for clean water to survive.
The report by Mr.Teague from Picher,Oklahoma was very sad because the town cannot really be rebuilt although I wish it could thrive again for those who have lived in the town for so long. All the neighborhoods destroyed by the tornado was terrible to see because mother nature can cause so much havoc in a very short time. I hope the residents can rebuild somewhere else and continue to thrive in their lives.
Finally, the piece by Rehema Ellis about the mother and son in the National Guard both going off to the Middle East to serve in the wars was very inspirational and shows such honor and pride for ones country within a family. The son grew up around the armories so it was already in him to serve on day. Hearing she is getting married and all three are serving is very honorable. I hope they all remain safe while in the region and come home safe and well. Very nice piece!  Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Will see you later regarding primary coverage. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all great ladies of this blog!
Be Well Always!
Brian,
I regularly watch Nightly News. Today (5/13) I have watched your report on the Bomb blasts in India. The news as usual was fair and impartial but what stuck me is the map of India shown in the news. India was shown with its state of 'Jammu and Kashmir' (JK) completely cut-off. This is the first time I have ever seen such a map, even the map of India that is listed on CIA's web site has this state [https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/in.html].
This may sound like a simple error but it is something every person of Indian origin takes very seriously and I am one among them. A reputed news organization such as NBC must take into consideration the emotions of people of other nationalities and should not make such blatant mistakes. Just because some militant organizations are fighting for Independence in this state, the others do not have to show it as a separate entity, for example as everyone knows Tibet is claimed by Tibetans, will NBC show a Map of China without Tibet when it reports on the Earthquake in China? There are many other countries that have some form of disputes with their borders, but news organizations should take a pragmatic approach and not be frayed by wrong reporting.

I really hope that NBC makes a correction and reports this in the next news broadcast in the Nightly News. For now I will take this news as a honest mistake on NBC part - probably because this map was picked up from a lazy reporter's virus infested computer. And I will keep watching your lively reporting and I hope
their wont be any more such mistakes in the future.
Why can't we just tell the Burmese junta that their behavior towards the cyclone victims is not acceptable and burst into the affected area with helicopters and deliver food and water on our own? The EU + the UN tells them in no uncertain words they must allow aid, yet the military leaders appear lacksidaisical. We should just go.
Mr. Williams,

Bla bla, liberal media bias, yada yada, managing editor, friends with popes, etc, bla bla... Military analysts on NBC ? No words ? Too bad you're full of talking points, when the nation needs a long hard look at itself and its politicians. Barry Goldwater believed in politicians being honest and truthful. What happens when our media can't even look at its own dishonest behaviour (pentagon marching orders). For the love of Democracy (and our supremely well-written constitution), when someone has done wrong (Rumsfeld, Gonzalez, Cheney, Bush, Feith, Rice, et al), they really shouldn't be used as an expert anymore. William Kristol, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc - please go back to what they said about executive powers during the Clinton years and contrast this with the current president and his cabinet. Partisanship ? As a member of the press, you shouldn't be trying to get into those black-tie events, you should be growing a set like Helen Thomas and asking tough questions. On the anniversary of the 5th year our country has languished in Iraq (with no detailed description of what *winning* means in concrete terms - do you care to do your job here ?), Charlie Rose had Ali Fadhil and Sinan Antoon on his show. They were both in Iraq prior to our arrival and during the random shelling of the city (smart bombs ? when's the last time you shook hands with a smart bomb ? There is no such thing, considering you were embedded with the military, you were unable to go verify the location of our smart bombs or at the very least speak with the families of the newly deceased) and they re-iterated the reality in Iraq - Leave ! It's not a matter of patriotism or the war on terror - it's a failed policy that our leader refuses to confront ! Uneblieveable ! You are terrible journalists, the whole lot of you - I have to tip toe on broken glass to get through your blog, as it has the National Enquirer kind of feel. Let's face it, whether Obama or Hillary wins won't hide the fact that the Republicans are divided and the multiple interests within it have hijacked the party from the true conservatives - fiscal responsibility, personal liberties and ... wait for it... not torturing ? Zing ! Crony journalists, the whole crew. If only GE wasn't manufacturing bombs, along with making stories about false WMD's. It's Mr. Zing to you now.

Mr. Williams - please do your job.
Mr Williams - news reports now state that on December 12, 2006, you attended a lunch meeting with Donald Rumsfeld and the cadre of "military analysts" who were part of a secret Pentagon program to promote the Iraq War.

At this meeting, Rumsfeld and many of the "analysts" reportedly bemoaned declining public support for both the war and Mr. Rumsfeld.  Mr. Rumsfeld reportedly expressed a sentiment that a new terrorist attack could supply a needed "corrective" to this sentiment.

Is this correct?  Were you at the meeting?  When will you discuss the secret Pentagon program, and its influence on your reporting?
Brian, did you see the report yesterday that showed that military analysts from the Pentagon propaganda program have appeared on NBC, CNBC, and MSNBC over 1,000 times?  That is worthy of comment, not your continuing denials.
Why hasn"t the immigration raid on the country's largest kosher meat plant in Postville IA been on the news?  Over 300 people were arrested and incarerated?
Ann Ernst  Dubuque, IA
al75,

Where can that report for the Pentagon meeting with Brian Williams be found?

Bad as things are, it does seem unlikely that Rumsfeld would be quite so unguarded, even with proven allies like Brian in the corporate media.

Can you reference a story?
I  can't imagine what it will be next week.
This is getting embarrassing, Brian.  You have at hand the story of how the U.S. government organized a propaganda campaign to sell the American public on a disastrous $3 trillion war, and you don't find this story and your place in it newsworthy, even in the face of 8000 pages of incriminating documents which are available to anyone with time to go through them.

What has to happen, before this item becomes "news" at NBC?  Does Paris Hilton have to attend the Congressional hearings?   Or would we need Britney as well?  Or would bare breasts be enough to jump start it?

Maybe it's a "given" in the NBC executives suites that the company absolutely must support a low tax and anti-regulation Republican administration in its foreign adventures.  And even more so when the parent company, GE, is a military contractor and does lots of business with Uncle Sam.

The question is, how do you manage to look in the mirror every morning?
In the news on NBC from May 13th showed a completely wrong map of India without the state of Kashmir. This is a wrong representation and must be immidiately corrected. Please do not use such wrong information and maps in the future.
Brian, I can't believe you're still working in news!  I guess Colbert isn't as powerful as he once thought:

http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=168451
Brian just take a couple cheap shots at some conservative icons or ideas and you'll be back safe in the club. These people don't really care about things like rendering people to the middle east for torture, military adventurism without congressional or UN approval, bombing civilians, no bid contracts to Halliburton, giving away billions to big evil oil. Clinton did all these things and they defended him. Come on Brian cave into the thought police.
Dear Mr. Williams,

I have always held you in high regard, but recently have been pretty disgusted with the way NBC has been so biased to Senator Hillary Clinton.  It is disgusting to think that we live in american and you and the rest of the idiots over there are trying to shove Barack Hussein Obama down our throats.  Your interview with Barrack Hussein Obama was the weak, as was Mr. Moyers interview.  I will not be watching NBC anymore.
