Images from Myanmar

Posted: Friday, May 09, 2008 4:19 PM by Sam Singal

By Ann Curry, NBC News anchor

Tonight we will see more dramatic images from Myanmar's delta region, hardest hit by last weekend's cyclone, our report from one of the few journalists able to get close.

The images are haunting. Showing the dead, and the survivors, their suffering is palpable. But even they do not even begin to tell the horror of what happened.

The government of Myanmar, which tells us 100,000 people were killed or injured, and that one and a half million are homeless, today is still preventing foreign aid from coming in.

We hear food and supplies from the UN are still in warehouses, as the government, which denied aid workers visas, doesn't have the infrastructure to get the help to the suffering.

People need food and shelter, and are expected to start getting sick and many are orphans.

How long can the world sit and watch, allowing it's hands to be tied?

If Myanmar's government can prevent the world from seeing images like those we are going to show you tonight, the world could well forget.

U.N. has sent aid but don't want them U.S. people there.

What sticks in my mind are the New Orleans people begging for help, getting nothing not even copters dropping food.
Hi Ann,
Speaking of forgetting, I have a comment about something different.
I am very sorry for the people of Myanmar just to let everyone know I do feel the great lose that part of the world has had in recent years.
I was looking at the "This Week in Pictures" and number 11 got my eye. I think that we in this country should give greater reverence to those of our allies that give support in our attempts to resist aggression in other parts of the world. We get many world leaders that criticize us, yet some great support comes from citizens of Canada. Their military stands beside our great military and give the same ultimate sacrifice. I love our country and what it stands for. I love the Canadian citizens for their support of our country and government as shown by the representative photo in your “This Week in Pictures” number 11. I just think we should recognize their efforts more along with the efforts of your troops.

I'm glad you're displaying these images even if the Myanmar government doesn't want you do. That is absolutely the right thing for a news organization to do. But why don't you take this same attitude toward the US government? Why have US TV networks and news channels refused to cover the story about the military analysts working for the pentagon while being presented to the viewers as objective? OK, so you got used, SAY SO! Be as outraged as your viewers.
Hi Ann

Top News is Republicans want to end Mother's Day no surprise with all the disrespect shown by Law Makers, Media Host and bloggers with the bad language used these days. We have lost Values and please do use Christian Religion. The Bible say Honor Mother and Father while US Government and some citizens don't. It broke my heart to hear the words used on TV about Hillary and her daughter. Once a person's mouth would be wasted out with soap, now the FCC doesn't see a problem as long as it's the right woman/child.

As for me I wish all the blogger and my friends Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and even Matt as all the Mothers and those who stepped in a VERY HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY. I  have no grandchildren yet but God let me remember the day my kids were born, how they smells and their first smile.  One blogger said it right all the men who have daughters have let them down and shown Father's no longer protect/support the dreams of their daughters.  I was so lucky my Dad stood up for woman/girls and me. He always say you can be what ever you want if you work hard enough. Sorry to see even as Hillary is the best of the current group she or any woman will be good enough until we hit rock bottom and she will be called on.

I read about the so called race card Hillary is said to have use. Facts that card was first used by Obama and then the Media even the late Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. would have seen that one. Thank goodness God created people of all color as this is just a problem here on earth.  I'm not surprised about the poor treatment Hillary is getting from the Media and Law Makers as I remember when I as a young black child was treated with the same hate, I even saw Black Leaders who sold out for greed even using their own race to get it.

The Burma Government has been attacked on all ends before the cyclone. They watched as the US slips in countries under false words and then take over the resources. Burma would be no different then Iraq or Afghanistan. Evil is always at work and the actions we're shown speaks volumes. As the UN Secretary is Chinese and we know what's up there, it's no surprise for the distrust. Millions of people need help but fear has over come help. Burma watched the United States Government sit back for 5 days and watch American citizens die and those who begged for help while our US Law Makers did nothing. If a President wont help his own people what makes anyone think he cares about others. The faces of those dying shown I TV will haunt me for the rest of my life and I pray God can forgive those who refuse to help.

Again I wish all bloggers, NBS Staff and specially my friends Lisa, Laura, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and Matt too a very happy Mother's Day.
Brian, just wanted to let you know I am beyond agitated that you all allow stories like this one "Depressed teens more likely to try pot
Report: Depression-marijuana combo can also increase chance of addiction" into your news.

This is nothing short of outright lies.  They have no proof (the actual studies done around the world prove everything the Drug Czar says wrong).

How could you release outright LIES.  This kind of news is nothing short of have 30 rock moved to the oval office press room.  I thought we were beyond this "Reefer Madness".  Could we try objective reporting that tries to do at least some fact checking?

Maybe running stories like this are an FCC requirement now.  I am extremely disappointed.
It is kind of like New Orleans and Katrina. In that case too there was a corrupt inept local government that prevented Bush from sending federal troops in to help. See Posse Comitatus Act. Of course that law wasn't violated when Clinton used tanks on Waco, but that's the selective outrage world we live in thanks to democrats. The so called "hearings" in congress were sad enough with activist comparing the stadium to gitmo. I can't imagine how bad they would have been if the 82nd had been sent in. Oh out the democrats would have demanded impeachment.
Good Evening Ann, Nice to see you on a Friday Nightly News broadcast. The report by Mr.Connery from Myanmar was truly devastating and horrible to view some pictures. Those people are in a desperate situation and need help now. The outbreak of hunger and disease is going to be extremely great if these people don't receive the supplies to survive. The more I hear of this situation the more I don't understand why the generals won't allow their people to get help. They need the experts to treat all of them and give them food and other supplies. I really hope it turns for the better for them very, very soon.
On another note the plans for Jenna Bush's wedding this Saturday appear to be all set to go. All those attendants in those spring color dresses is going to make pretty pictures. She will look beautiful and so will First Lady Laura Bush. I'm sure the wedding will be great. I wish the happy couple all the best.

Those baby ducks along with their mother were so cute being scooted towards the grass by the secret service agent. I'm happy he was there to help them to safety. Not something that is part of of job, but he was great to make sure they were okay.
Finally, I enjoyed the "Making a Difference" segment this evening. Mr.Davis is providing fine futures through the scholarships to all those colleges. Everyone needs to understand people and things around the world and this is really helping in that effort. Nice piece!
Thank you for the broadcast Anne! Have a great weekend! Happy Mothers Day! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Happy Mothers Day to all moms!
Hi to all great ladies of this blog!
Be well always!
Hi Ann; good to see you on the broadcast tonight.  The stories and photos from Burma are devastating just to see and hear; I cannot imagine being on the ground.  I am not feeling creative on  the words to describe the government there; however, the ones coming to mind are not fit to spit out in public.  I was feeling guilty just waiting for my small, meager supper to heat up.

I mean no offense to any person (particularly Jackie) but I am so tired of the race issue in reference to politics.  I don't vote my color (which is my mom's pale French white - I wasn't blessed with the olive skin color of my Italian dad) and it befuddles me that anyone could.  I mean, color is innate.  It simply is.  I'm probably very simple with this subject, but I vote what's important for me.  I don't consider that to be because I'm white, or because I'm a French/Italian American.  I am simply an American who happens to be from French Canadian and Italian parents.  Obama's color and Hillary's lack of color has nothing to do with how I view their politics.  Why do we have to make it so complex?

The tornado footage was quite dramatic.  Thanks for sharing them.  I'm grateful I wasn't there!

Congratulations to Jenna and Henry!

Aaaaaaaaaaw the ducks!  I'm glad to see they weren't arrested for getting past White House security!  Thanks for that great story.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mom posters - and to Ann and the other mothers on the NBC staff.  I'm not a mom, but I will enjoy the day with my mom, my sister, and sister-in-law.  My sis & s-i-l are having their first Mom's Days, so it will be a noisy and fun affair!
Hi ann,  I read almost all of Jackie's posts, and I agree Hillary is getting poor treatment from the media.  Also those little baby ducks that live on the White House grounds are adorable.  We have alot of baby ducks swimming on the lake where we live this time of the year also.  It was a nice surprise to see you again on Nightly News tonight.
I would love to see an "In Depth" on Hemp for bio-fuel, building materials and paper. Not to mention feeding the world with the most nutritious seed next to soybeans.

This would of course take guts, and a real honest look at truly becoming a green society. Judging by the Drug Czar propaganda that hit the front page today, and all of the drug company advertisements, I won't hold my breath.
The footage from Myanmar is blinding forces people to push for change there. Hopefully those images will. If we as Americans were shown uncensored footage from the Middle East with American faces, the war would have end sooner.

Happy Mothers Day to you Ann and all the mothers that have sons and daughters serving our country and those mothers who have lost children in the war. Maybe soon the administration will allow us to see all aspects and effects of the war it will bring a swift and peaceful end to it.
Jackie Lisa Stephanie Laural, Anna Celine, and all the rest of the lady bloggers especially Ann Curry (Matt you count to, but this is a Mother's Day Message Don't forget to call yours btw)

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. Or at least this blog

Seriously the best of wishes to each of you, no matter if  you have immediate children or not. Many years ago I belonged, briefly, to a  religious order who's motto was " To be, insofar as it lies within her,a mother to all God's Childern"
It's not a bad way to live a life. All of you exemplify that every day on this blog. I'm glad I found you all.

And Richard, since we've been accused of "almost maternal concern" for you, how about a quick post this weekend, just to let us know you're OK?
Hi Ann, Loved your broadcast tonite, but I don't see how these military junta people can live with themselves!  It is so awful to see and know that we can't help do anything to help them, except pray for them.  I hope they get some relief soon, but it just makes no sense, why would they turn away help when their people are suffering so much?   On another note, I have to say that I am very disappointed in Hillary's comments & emphasises  on White Americans - why is she doing this?  It sounds awful and like she thinks that way?  I sure wouldn't tell people that - you shouldn't characterize people that way, by the color of their skins, I thought we were past that. It's like racial voter profiling ~ pull that person over and make them vote for Hillary.  What does she mean when she says - he won't get the nomination, (even thou he has the votes)  it sounds like a threat to me....she's scary!
Ann,

I hope Myanmar's military government will allow aid in from somewhere, even though I guess they're not Buddhists.

I was sorry to hear about your dad, and I empathize with your loss.

I would also say happy birthday Tim Russert, but my dry erase board got a different result (?), and Happy Teach Week all of you  :)
The present American administration has caused a lot of distrusts to many nations. Myanmar is one example of a destitution is better colonization.
Mrs. Curry,

I always enjoy seeing you on the broadcast, and in any forum for that matter. It felt like you could have done the entire broadcast on the situation in Myanmar, even without the ability for more coverage. It was amazing that someone was able to get it and capture on camera how bad it really was. I cant imagine what kind of aftermath this will lead to between the Myanmar government, its people, and the UN. Its sad to think that this kind of thing can happen between people and their government officials after so many years of many powerful natural disasters in other places, though I cant remember the last one that was on this grand of a scale. On a brighter note, hope everyone has a fine mothers day. My Mothers Day affairs are in order.
Claudia-- Thank you for your kind and thoughtful post. And have a lovely Mother's Day yourself!

My best to all the "regulars".
Take care all---

No Nightly News on the East Coast again, because of the golf tournament?  Well, poop!  (Maybe it'll get rained out?)

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms who post here, and especially to my friend, Jackie!  I am not a mother, unless you count my calico, Cleopatra!

Lots of love to Lisa, Jackie, and Stephanie.  XOXO
Hello to Celine, Claudia, Anna, and Matt!
Dear Mrs. Curry,

Indeed, how long can the world sit and watch, allowing its hands to be tied? How did our own disaster in New Orleans unfold again? Oh and how about our own government’s mishandling of the entire affair? What’s not debatable here is the fact that Myanmar was and is continuing to be a unfolding tragedy magnified by the ineptitude of a decrepit regime, which your network has focused very little attention on. Let’s not forget that Aung San Suu Kyi is still under house arrest, but not because our government has been so effective at getting her charges dropped. I resist the urge of hurling invectives at your lack of journalistic credibility. Rather, how about you speak strong at meetings to have your network cover the NYT story that exposed the TV/Pentagon propaganda? I forget that you were also involved in the shameful exploitation of the American people. How about a recent appearance in congress by Philippe Sands to discuss the decision by our government, at the highest echelons of power, to use torture to supposedly extract useful information from terrorists. To all those idiots out there beaming with glee that I have supposedly exposed myself to ridicule for saying that torture doesn’t work, please read accounts by JOHN MCCAIN about his time in Vietnam and realize that he also signed confessions, which indicate one thing – TORTURE IS WRONG! When is your network going to take the high road? I forgot, people that believe something erroneously are driven to squelch dissention, because it opens the possibility that they might be wrong and held liable.

Sincerely,
k
Lester is resting his fingers this weekend.

Laural anyone who helps and loves a child should be celebrated on this Mother's Day even if you have a cat to love and care for. smile

Yes it is a very special Day and I hope all of the bloggers that Life means Mother without her none of us been be here.  As for my the kids did great and the shocker was I got an airline ticket to visit back East on my vacation. Yes once a year I do the Mommy thing and check up on the grown kids just to make sure their doing what I taught them, well also for some hugs and kisses.  I wanted a train ticket now I hope Jetblue doesn't cancel my fight. I know Brian would laugh as he knows I hate flying. But it was a gift of love and who am I to complain.

See everyone Monday and again Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia, Anne and you too Matt and all of the bloggers on this site have a Happy Mother's Day!!!
The situation in Myanmar is tragic.  Speaking of tragedies...I wonder if NBC is ever going to admit that they used military analysts hand-picked by the Pentagon to sell to the American people the Iraq war?   Here's a scoop, the Senate is going to hold a hearing on it!  Good luck!
How long can the world sit and watch, allowing it's hands to be tied?

it's = it is
its = its
I want to direct this to Ann Curry.  Ann, I've been watching you since your first appearance on "Good Morning America," To see you "mature" into your current positions is a joy for me.  You have become a magnamous and savvy reporter, handling every venue with astounding professionality.  Your empathy and understanding of different stories and their consequences is amazing.  I am a senior and a "news junkie" and I am usually clued to the tv whenever you are on. Everything about you speaks volumes as to your ability to get it done!  Your appearance is smart and goes well with your overall demeanor.  Thank you so much for the excellent job you do and please keep up the good work.  Your Biggest Fan
with hugs, PPatricia Williamson
