ABOUT THIS BLOG

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Here we go again

Chuck Todd, our Political Director, has it about right about tonight: the ground game, while not over, takes on much less importance after tonight, because the number of undeclared superdelegates will exceed the number of available "regular" delegates in the remaining primary states.

Tonight could be a game-changer, and it could be the 6th inning in a long ballgame. We get our first indication at about 5:30 Eastern time, when Sheldon Gawiser briefs us on his read of "first wave" exit polling results (which he puts through his algorithym pro-rating blender) and about which we are sworn to secrecy. It can "educate" but not otherwise affect our coverage in the Nightly News feeds prior to the poll closings. Tonight might go fast. We will be here nonetheless, making sure each time zone gets a new, live and updated feed. Tonight's speeches will be fascinating, depending on the outcome. The morning shows have already booked a "roadblock" -- both Democrats, in separate interviews, on all three broadcast networks. It feels like the height of primary season. I guess, in a way, it is.

I want to thank the great folks, my friends (sitting about 50 yards from me) at MSNBC for helping me put on a great hour earlier today. We did it seat-of-the-pants style; I hadn't written a word, no teleprompter, and just the most basic format -- the best kind of television news there is. The only problem is: while it's huge amounts of fun for the anchor (and, we hope, the guests) it's hell on a control room, where they always need to plan 2 or 3 moves in advance. But they keep having me back...

We've now swung over to work on Nightly News and begin the writing (they insist on it here) for tonight. We have a great broadcast planned, no matter your time zone, and we hope you can join us. Off to work.

All the best with today's and all future broadcasts, Mr. Williams.
Hi Brian -

I saw that great hour and it was the best part of this everlasting 2008 campaign.

I'm calling the noontime MSNBC program
"Politics is Fun" with Brian Williams and his friends.

Will you finally be covering the Pentagon Propaganda story or will the whitewash continue?
Does Brian Williams even know this blog exists?

You will notice that the Brian Williams posts are actually posted by Barbara Raab.

Kind of creepy watching his newscast isn't it after all of these comments are getting posted while he completely ignores them.

What is the point of this blog then?

Radio silence on probably the most important story of his career - the sudden end of his career as a trusted news source.

Yes, the Pentagon Propaganda story is not going away Brian.
Getting a live, updated broadcast is a big deal for many of us in the "4th wave"...  Too bad it can't be done more often.
Please Lord let these primaries decide something.  Please.  We can't take it anymore.  Brian, don't get me wrong, I love you and your MSNBC hour, but I am SICK of this primary season.
What fuddy duddies that they insist on writing the news for the broadcast.  Just don't know how to have fun.

I saw on last night's broadcast that Indiana will release preliminary results prior to all voting having concluded.  Obviously you have to report on it, but personally I think they are wrong, even if it influences one vote (8 votes would have changed Guam).

I do hope that continued focus is placed on Myanmar and the cyclone victims, who continue without relief or aid.  Mrs. Bush given her outspoken views on this government was a very appropriate person to be at the podium yesterday.

The drug bust at San Diego State University is bound to stir many more questions.  The amounts and variety of drugs available for sale were astonishing. The large connection to the campus fraternity community will likely resurrect the questions of whether or not fraternities belong on campus.

And of course there is the divorce/custody trial of NJ's former governor Jim McGreevy.  Thankfully for their little girl the custody hearing is under a gag order.  The divorce proceedings though will provide details that I dare say many of us would rather not know.  How lucky NJ residents are to have had Jim McGreevy as governor.  He did us so proud (NOT)

Good Evening Mr.Williams,Another exciting Tuesday with two primaries in North Carolina and Indiana. Sounds like you had a great hour on the noontime MSNBC program. You and Mr.Russert always are extremely enthusiastic when these Tuesday Primaries arrive. You show you are having a good time! I look forward to tonights broadcast and your coverage of the primary returns. Keep up the excellent work! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all the great ladies of this blog!
Be Well always!
Why is Brian even covering this race, when he's already endorsed the view that Obama is just another embittered black man who lacks the vision of America vouchsafed to privileged white people like John McCain (and Peggy Noonan)?

Are we supposed to look for fair and balanced election coverage from NBC, after this stunning admission?
I am so disgusted at the beginning of the Election Coverage on MSNBC. Within 15 seconds of the start, Keith Olderman takes a swipe at Hillary Clinton, pulls a laugh from Matthews and goes on as if all is OK. This is not journalism. These 2 should be banned form the set. If they cannot even show the slightest bit of journalistic integrity during a National broadcast, supposedly from 2 respected pundits, then get them off. I have switched to FOX after witnessing this time and again.
What the hell has happened to NBC/MSNBC. I used to watch faithfully, btu since they have shown theyc annot seperate their favourites and continue to belittle Clinton, they do not deserve to be called journalists/reporters or whatever they seem to think they are. To anchor a National show, all the while showing their bias, shows they should not anchor this show. Give it to Brian or Tom. They know how to do that! With salaries over a million a year, these twon should be pulling top ratings in their time slots, and over the last few months, I see why they aren't.
If Matthews wants to pee himself or cry when he hears Obama, let him do it from Obama's bus. And if Olderman has issues with the people of Michigan and Florida actually getting their voices heard, then tell him to visit a crowd in thsoe states and explain why they shouldn't be heard. Before he does, he needs to learn his facts first. I'm sick and tired of MSNBC and have moved on to FOX or CNN for political coverage. And because GE owns this network, I won't be buying any GE products or visiting Universal Studio's anytime soon!
Brian--- It was so obvious the hour was unscripted, and unscripted is the best! You are a cable animal. No one does it better !

Ditto, Joan!

Best to all the regulars!
This will be a very interesting night. I'll be glued to MSNBC.
Take care-
Meanwhile, people keep dying in Iraq.  Pesky, boring, old news -- I know.  Still they're dying.  NBC and many other networks are still refusing to discuss the expose of their practice of using pentagon-indoctrinated ex-generals as "experts" to give falsely positive "spin" on the Iraq debacle.

Got integrity?
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Well,I suppose it will be another close race for delegates this evening. As usual Mr.Russert gave his great analysis of exit poll numbers and I'm sure he will give even more this evening on MSNBC. Regarding the report by Ian Williams on the extremely devastating cyclone that hit Myanmar, I really hope those people can receive help soon. Seeing all the destruction caused by the storm was horrible. I hope the government allows the aid agencies to get supplies of food, medicine and other crucial things into the country. It is a very desperate situation and the people need help ASAP. I hope they receive it soon. The piece about the violinist leaving his 1723yr violin which was on loan to him in the cab and the retired cab driver finding it and returning it to him was great. I am glad the cab driver found it and the violinist treated him and his fellow drivers to a concert. A very nice man the cab driver was to return it to him. A very nice piece! He played beautifully! Finally, the report by Mr.Bazell was interesting about the mind/body connection concerning eating. One does tend to eat comfort food when one is stressed. One has to learn to balance all types of foods to be healthy. I think it was funny when you said Mr.Bazell was last scene with a brownie. I wonder if Mr.Bazell eats comfort food when he is stressed? I'm just kidding! Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. See you later bringing in primary returns! Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Hi to all the great ladies of this blog!
Be well always!
I hesitate to appear shallow, but...
That was thoughtless and just bad news and entertainment judgment to cut into the Oprah Winfrey interview with Barbara Walters on the west coast to report election results, and least one of which was too early to project. I am actively supporting one of the candidates you reported on, plus I am a former broadcast journalist, and I still could have waited another 25 minutes to hear the election results from North Carolina. There was something very disrespectful about it, not just for Oprah and Barbara, but for the viewers. It was arguably the biggest televised interview of the year, so far. If you had to break in to the interview, you should have at least reported on the tens of thousands of people who died, and are dying from the typhoon in Southeast Asia.

Covering the primaries as a sports event instead of asking substantive questions of the candidates:  zero journalism points.

Continued obstinate refusal to address the military propaganda campaign and NBC's culpability.

Continued refusal to disclose conflicts of interest by those who produce, create and deliver "news"

Continued refusal to grant Glenn Greenwald an interview about the above.

Continued failure to produce journalism,to act with  integrity and honesty.

Continued failure to serve the public interest and to keep the public trust.

NBC: A national disgrace
In the land of equality, isn't it a shame to have the so
called super-delegates?
Here We (Don't) Go Again

Brian--I realized you are completely avoiding this story so I feel the need to keep you informed.

Senator John Kerry unveiled a campaign today to get the GAO to investigate the Pentagon Propaganda story--you know, the one that you pretend does not exist and that you, as managing editor, were not a part of.

Here is what Media Matters reported on May 1:

Continuing their silence, the major broadcast networks and cable news networks all reportedly declined to discuss the April 20 New York Times front-page article on the hidden ties between media military analysts and the Pentagon on the record with NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik. Further, according to a search* of transcripts available in the Nexis database, the broadcast networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- still had not reported on the revelations in the Times story on any of their news programs through May 1.

I guess we understand at least one of your motivations for stone cold denial through your smirky silence: there could be a subpoena in your future. Oh what a day.

Final point--as you know but have trouble dealing with, you are owned by GE, which is one of the companies profiting most from this five-year war. GE is a classic war-mongering company. And you and your broadcast help them carry out their war-mongering on countries of no threat to us, killing millions of people.

Are you proud of that? Will you tell your children that you helped to cheerlead this nation into a war, even cooperating with the Pentagon in a propaganda campaign aimed at the American people?

What a dad! What an American! Fascism means freedom--and lots of money for Brian.

You da man!

I will NO longer watch NBC or MSNBC... You are drooling over Obama. I can't even watch Keith and Chris - where is journalistic integrity? Why can't you report the news? I have switched to CNN and Fox. And I never thought I would say Fox is fair. But MSNBC is the worst! You all are shameless.
Mr. Williams,

I was wondering if my school was going to make it on the national news tonight, but I was surprised (I didn't think it would). I went to highschool and college with Jenny Poliakoff (the girl who die of an overdose, and who was the reason the whole investigation started), and she was a good friend of mine. I am so glad that something was finally done about this problem. If thats what it would have taken to keep my friend and so many other college students alive, I think the world would still have many more bright individuals still with us today.  I was sad to hear that a girl in one of my classes knew one of the students who got arrested, and actually knew he was doing cocaine.  It was on your birthday Mr. Williams last year that Jenny died, and this past weekend there was a "walk" for her favorite charity for children with special needs, which raised over $100,000. The site is Jennyswalk.com for anyone interested. I am saddened about what happened, but glad that something has finally been done about it. I think these kinds of investigations should be going on every 6 months or so around big campus's like mine. There are way too many people at SDSU to get a firm grasp on the drug issue and to be able to crack down on it, but at least some progress was made. I was definitely surprised at seeing my school on your broadcast as I assumed there had been even bigger numbers at some other school in recent history, but I guess not. I was glad to see that people still have not forgotten about my friend and that her passing was not for nothing.
A joyful broadcast in the last 5 minutes tonight.  Wow!   It was so refreshing to learn of the honest cab driver and the return of the violin.  Thanks too for the mind and body segment tonight on mindful eating!

With regards to our dear Richard, FYI for everyone there is an excerpt of his new book on line.

Here's the link and a remarkable read thus far.

Lisa, the "Grand Poobah" title is on you now so I am expecting a big invite to the first private book signing in NYC compliments of NBC!
Hi Brian
Myanmar remind me of Katrina and Rita storms. Mrs. Bush's comments
The First Lady heaped particularly harsh criticisms on the Burmese government for not adequately warning residents about the incoming storm:

That was so stupid after the World watched Americans die on TV during Katrina. Even when the White House did nothing for 5 days other Countries quickly wanted to help as the President refused. I don't blame the Burmese for not wanting the US in their country as like others the US only brings corrupt and chaos.

Yesterday the news reported that the US and the Pentagon were building Disneyland and a Rich Resort in Bagdad's safe Green Zone. Yes taxpayers will be funding this and Iraq can get visitors from all over the world. While the Iraq people suffer, the US and Iraq Government get rich.  I noticed no one asked the Iraq people as we are taking control of Iraq.

The cab driver was a refreshing story. Honesty is still in some people. We hear so much of corrupt, greed, dishonesty and the deaths of our soldiers it is good to hear something nice for a change.

Ok I turned down the sound with the election report. It's getting to much now, I just keep my faith with girlfriend Hill.  I did hear Mr. Russert say Hillary can't win with the numbers.  Brian I was raised to believe with hard work, honesty and faith anything can happen. If people thought of giving up Ben Franklin wouldn't have found electricity nor would Abraham Lincoln been President.  A woman dreamed of going to the Moon, it happen, if she had listen to Tim Russert it wouldn't have happen.  With the help of God and faith in yourself anything is possible, at least that's what I told my children.

Brian in 1970 Huntley-Brinkley Report was on air, and you with faith and hard work are 2008 NBC Nightly News Anchor dreams and faith work your the example so don't sell Hillary short. 1947 Meet the Press with host Martha Rountree yes 3 years before Tim Russert was born. He forgets how he got his dream with hard work and faith in himself.  People seem to forget how they got were they are and say others can't.  What would have happen if you and Tim were told you couldn't do what your doing now?

the Best to Lisa, Laural, Stephanie, Claudia and Matt
Well Brian,
The Democratic Race didn't start out this way but unfortunately it is ending this way.
Blacks voting for Black.
Whites voting for White.
I'm sitting here quietly and watching the turn of events.
I'm getting the feeling he doesn't look at the blog. But what can you expect - he's on the dying edge of journalism. When all the great anchors have retired or been struck off, he remains, a sop to Boomers who remember the days of newsmen with integrity and courage. Not to mention the work ethic and journalist ethics to actually check who their sources are. He doesn't break stories - none of the networks do. Instead he regurgitates them as pap for the masses. He listens to Rush Limbaugh and praises Peggy Noonan - because that's what will make his bosses happy. It's understandable, it's rational, but what a melancholy end to a great tradition.
Still no courage or integrity from Brian Williams and NBC.  They still refuse to address the ex-generals and the propaganda story.  How dare you call yourself a journalist, Brian.  You are nothing more than a corporate stooge.  Your silence on this breathtaking story of media manipulation and acquiescence is absolutely astounding.  I will begin listing your sponsors tonight so that we may begin contacting them about your role in this deception.  You are a coward, Brian Williams.  And worse yet, a traitor to the American people.
When will Brian admit that the integrity of his expert guest is not the only factor in good journalism.  Whether his expert guest has a financial or political interest in the issue at stake can also affect the guest's judgment.  This clearly does not disqualify the guest but it does make it incumbent on Brian to make the potential or apparent conflict of interest explicit.  Brian doesn't seem to realize that our country was taken to war on bad and perhaps fraudulent intelligence with the complicity of main stream media and now there's more to the story.  Let's see is Brian will cover it:

Pentagon FOIA  -  The Pentagon has released all the documents it gave to the New York Times regarding the military analyst media machine story.
Just woke up to hear the news and read MSNBC site.
I'm proud of Hillary but something struck me as strange.

You have a great special on Tim Russert and his Dad. His Dad seem so proud and even showed some of his personal history.  I wondered if Tim's Dad would have told him to quit, as I read Tim's comments on the web.
Meet the Press" host takes the view that the Democratic race is over.
It's so easy for some to fight for their dream while crushing others. Hillary earned the right to run and be respected, just as Tim has done. I say what goes ago comes around, as one day Tim will have the door shut his his face as he reaches for his dream.  Many before him set in the Meet the Press seat and you can be sure someone will replace him maybe before he's ready. Ask Tim to remember do unto others as you would have others do unto you, he can find that in the bible.
On a brighter note for Wednesday, to the Mary J Blige fans on the blog, Mary J will be rocking on Friday morning in NYC on the NBC Plaza!   Tune in or set your TIVO's.

Maybe David Gregory will be doing his thing again with Matt and Al!

For all of you angrily posting about the ex-generals...

Brian Williams hasn't been "silent" on this issue. He made a lengthy post last week. Here's the link:
http://dailynightly.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/29/958477.aspx
Despite GE's best efforts to stop the will of the people even Rev Wright couldn't stop us!!  Thank God for Barack Obama... Long live the United States of America.  Down with the corporate criminals like you and your friends on the Board of General Electric.  May your war profits seal your place in Hell.
Matt, I was saddened to learn that it was a friend of yours who touched off the drug investigation, and rather proud of you to learn that you've made some good come out of it.

David, from Arlington Tx, I realize that I'm wasting my time, that you don't bother to check back or read any posts under yours, since you are only interested in making your attacks, as though somehow name calling
is going to get you a response. It irks me nonetheless. Your latest post does nothing to further your stance, and indeed has actually done the opposite, if your hope was to convince people that true malfeasance happened. Argue the issue man! Once again I argue that even without disclaimers    of Pentagon briefings or membership on any committees it was apparent that military men would support military action. And to all those who somehow feel that the words of someone "anti-war" appearing on any form of media would have changed the course of this war, well, magical thinking has it's place I quess. This was a war that the current administration wanted, and got. Blame them.
Thanks for not reporting on the pentagon generals regurgitating the party line on the Iraq war.  After all you being a millionaire cedes you the insight to know what is best for all of we the great unwashed.  Who needs a first amendment when we have corporate millionaires deciding that war isn't important enough to warrant coverage.  Trust me I know better than everyone.
When I saw Tim Russert with his trusty little white board and markers, I knew to pay attention.  If he says Hillary is dead, Hillary is dead.  She may not know it in her heart yet, but Russert's usually right on the money.
Yes, Rob, we all read Brian's casual dismissal of this outrageous scandal. We all read his protestations that he didn't do anything wrong and how the Generals are really good guys who would never do anything wrong.

Maybe that's good enough for you, but I've got 3 sons off fighting in these insane wars. War profiteers and propagandists (like Brian Williams) are treasonous.
So Bri Is this you talking or is it the Pentagon or some other propaganda agency?  Why should we believe anything you say?  Are you just hair and a suit?
Thanks Rob.  We are still asking Bri to respond as that puff piece you reference basically says nothing.  I'm guessing you drink the kool aid or are Bri's sock puppet.

So Bri what about propaganda?  Is your network ever going to fess up to this in prime time?  I've stopped watching so I guess I really shouldn't care.
Brian- I am getting married in August and my fiance tapes every one of your nightly shows so that he doesn't miss them. We watch them together after work while eating dinner. I was never one to watch the news before I met him but now I can't think of going through a day without staying updated thanks to you. My fiance, Kurt, and I always say how incredibly sad it would be if you ever decided to retire. Anyhow, Kurt comments on your ties EVERY NIGHT, absolutely loves them. This may be too much to ask, but would it be possible for you to send one to me so that I can give it to him as a wedding present? He would be so happy and it would be quite special. Thank you for considering my request, and we'll see you tonight!
your coverup of the nyt story about the pentagon military analyst program is shameful. have you investigated the documents released by the pentagon on their web site? your continued silence is immoral.as a citizen who seeks the truth about his government, i will look elsewhere for my news.
Brian, The rant that Keith Olderman made last night about Hillary was uncalled for and insulting to the Amercian people. It was hate in the purist form. He was as bad as Wright or Sharpton. He owes Hillary an apology big time. And for Matthews to laugh was as mean They both show their true colors. Just use their positions to spread hate. We don't need that kind of journalism. I thought journalism was suppose to be fair not malicious. Can they say that they have never made a misstatement,or something that turned out something that was taken the wrong way. I doubt it. It shows how utterly malicious they both are. Hateful, hateful I wonder how he would like if someone would make a laundry list of his human mistakes. And there is no doubt that he has not forgiven hillary for his laundry list of what he thinks are her errors.
