Battle damage

By Lester Holt, NBC News Anchor

Hello from New York.  On this evening’s broadcast, we are going to look at the hand-wringing going on among some influential Democrats over just where the protracted contest between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will leave the party when all is said and done. Hillary Clinton had a new challenge for Obama today, while Obama nursed his tired body from some late night basketball and worked on re-casting his image. Ron Allen and Lee Cowan are covering the candidates for us, and will update us on the battle for Indiana.

We'll also double-team the economy tonight with Mike Taibbi focusing on the stimulus checks many Americans are about to receive and why many citizens will not be using them as intended. CNBC's Trish Regan will offer a report on the things many air travelers used to take for granted, like getting a window or aisle seat, that are now raising the cost of flying.

NBC's Lisa Myers will show us the chilling video messages left behind by one of the bombers who struck the London subway system in 2005. She will also have information on why British anti-terror officials believe the risk of another attack there is growing.

On this final day of our special Green Week coverage, I will take you on an extraordinary journey inside one of Alaska's shrinking glaciers. Experts recently warned that many glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, potentially putting millions of people at risk. I hope you can join us this evening for the Nightly News.

The Reform Party has been making the same case ever since then.  It was true then and its TRUE TODAY.

"The Giant Sucking Sound?" American jobs are being lost to offshore outsourcing.  Unfair trade is hurting American small businesses.  Fraud, Waste, and Abuse of your tax dollars are going to pet projects, agencies, and contributors. Commonly known as pork; These public works or corporate welfare are for pet industries of BOTH political parties. They BOTH do it because they are unaccountable. The Republicans rely on it for THEIR power, and YOU get the bill.  They serve their contributors; not you. They tax you in an incomprehensible tax system, then waste your money.  Meanwhile, they ignore the National DEBT and Deficit ; Currently approaching $7 trillion up from $4 trillion in 1992. Small Business is the engine of this country; Government should not hurt them by oppressive arbitrary regulation. Social Security MUST change or it will die of bankruptcy.Medicare too.  Huge expenses of Government are hidden off-budget. The Democrats and Republicans offer only gimmicks not solutions.  And they both tax you unmercifully. Elections are too long and cost too much.  The citizens can make them stop, but, they must be heard; not driven away from the process by personal attacks, sloganeering politics, balloons, and bumper stickers instead of addressing people's daily concerns. Government at the City, County, State, and Federal level  all need a wake up call.

They are sucking out your livelihood for their patrons the Lobbyists.

Only YOU can wake them up!

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Nice to see you on Daily Nightly this evening. The election process seems to be endless. I really hope the race for the Democratic nominee gets decided soon. I'm beginning to believe it is going to last until the final primary. With regards to the stimulus checks being sent out to Americans I think some people might spend the money, but many will use the money for necessary bills or to pay for the high price of food and gasoline. On another note the rise in air travel costs makes one just want to take the train. The hassle of flying makes travelling by plane very frustrating. I hope things start moving in a positive direction soon. Anyway, looking forward to the broadcast this evening Mr.Holt. Peace to you and to all!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!
Be well always!
Happy Saturday!
Hi, Lester!  Always good to see you!

I am so tired of the "hand-wringing" going on within the Democratic party.  If they implode before November, it will be their own fault.  What is the big deal about Hillary Clinton remaining in the race?  How can anyone ask the first viable female presidential candidate to step aside, when her opponent is not exactly racking up landslide victories?  If the shoe were on the other foot, would the party be asking Senator Obama to drop out?  I seriously doubt it.  Let Hillary run.  Seat the Florida and Michigan delegates.  Stop disenfranchising voters.  Get your act together.  And kick ass in November.  Jeez.  I'm almost embarrassed to be a registered Democrat.  The world is going to hell in a handbasket, and our politicians are behaving like children in a sandbox....  And if I see Howard Dean's Snidely Whiplash face (minus the moustache) on TV one more time, I'm going to disconnect the cable!

On that note, have a great evening!

P.S. - My love to Lisa, Jackie, and Stephanie.  And to ladytechie, congratulations on braving the "age listed" club.  It's kind of liberating, isn't it?  Ha, ha.  :-)
Hilliary's elitist attack on Sen. Obama has bothered me
for some time and tonight on Nightly News it suddendly
came to me why.  Someone picked on him for his suit,
saying he looked like he was on the magazine G Q.
The way I see it, Sen. Obama is inspired by the
American Dream, which is a good thing and is not therefore elitist.

The stimulus check will really help me.  I want
to buy another pair of bifocal contact lenses, which
are wonderful.  Ten years ago, you were doing good
to read a luncheon menu  Now you can read
"War and Peace" if you want. No books with big
print for me.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Great broadcast this evening! The report by Lisa Myers concerning the video left by one of the suicide bombers from the London attacks was chilling indeed. Hearing him speak to his daughter about how he has to do this for the future shows how determined these men are to commit these violent attacks. I hope for the day when these groups no longer exist in the world because too many innocent victims pay the ultimate price. The report concerning the high cost of flying makes one want to stay home. The rising fuel costs for the airlines aren't helping the situation, but for the traveler it is a real headache. On another note your report about the glaciers melting at a rapid rate was very interesting and shows how climate change is dramatically affecting the earth. It was impressive to see you walk amid the huge chunks of ice because it is melting as you speak. The report of 2o" a year is alarming statistics. Someone I know went to Alaska last year and showed me video of ice breaking off and it was truly incredible how much is melting away. Hopefully, man can do something to hinder the fast rate of melting. Time will tell. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to you and to all!

Again, Lots of Love to Laurel, Jackie and Stephanie!
Be Well Always!

Hi Lester,
Thank goodness this Democratic race will be over soon. I believe Hillary needs a decisive victory from Obama in order to drop out of the race to save face. She obviously cannot leave after a decisive victory of her own in PA even if she cannot win the nomination.
As to any suggestions of counting the ILLEGITIMATE elections of Michigan and Florida, lets just make up any rules we want and call it the nominating process. Yes, it's that ridiculous. You can't hold illegitimate elections based on broken party rules that the candidates don't participate in and say, "hey look here, I won, I won." Oh, by the way, back in January Hillary said, they should not count. Good of her to be on the right side of the rules back then and decide she can be a DNC rule-breaker/party-destroyer now. She's finished after Indiana/NC gives Obama the crushing blow she needs to save face in her bowing out of the race.
Dear Robert in Norwich, CT:

Apparently, I have offended you, and need to clarify my point.  I think it was idiotic for the Democratic leadership in both Florida and Michigan to schedule their primaries "too early," therefore nullifying all votes cast.  But, do you think it is fair to the voters in those states to be disenfranchised?  If that had happened in Maryland, I would be livid.  Therefore, I think Howard Dean, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama should get together and figure out a fair way to seat those delegates.  Otherwise, those same voters may just stay home in November - or vote for McCain.

By the way, perhaps you should reread this blog's paragraph on etiquette, which is as follows:

I think obama should debate hilliary ,I belive also obama needs to explain why he is runing for president of united states but can not put his hand on his heart during the pledge ? Don't bully hilliary out of the race when women have waited so long to get there , at least she belives in the american dream truth justice and liberity for all.
just curious... Why doesn't the 'Weekend Nightly News' broadcast from the same set the weekday broadcast is from?
I have been tuning to NBC news since "takes a licking and keeps on ticking" John Cameron Swayze. True, I was young, but I remember those Timex promos he did with the boat motor in the tank of water.

For all these years I keep tuning in so that I can have a digest of the days top stories. And now, after Ron Allen's report, I see that I, as a 55 year old white male 5-figure-income inhabitant of a blue collar state do not have a need to continue supporting Barak Obama.

After all, as Mr. Allen said near the close of his piece about the hand-wringing, Barak Obama has "an inability to connect" with the likes of people like me.

I guess I must have been wrong in supporting him, since (though they are "just words") having "an inability" to connect certainly means he is totally incapable of such connection (inability and incapability being close enough to synonyms).

It also means Barak may as well go on vacation instead of continuing his futile efforts to make such connections, since it has now been pronounced on the leading national news program that all such effort is wasted, correct?

Seriously. Perhaps Ron Allen has spent just a little too much time on the Clinton trail. He, like most of the mainstream media, is starting to gobble-up Clinton  talking points and spit them out undigested as though they are real.

But then, this whole thing of forming ideas and opinions into language and sharing those meaning packets are "just words," correct? At least, so I have learned from the Clintons, so perhaps I stand correct in supporting Obama after all.

It's just too bad that he now has to campaign against programs like yours as well, where rumors of his (political) death are now being pronounced as "news."

Thank you.
There seems to be a faction with the moto:
      Hillary, anybody but!

Also, a faction that believes:
      Obama, no matter what!

Together they have propelled a man that is less well known, has much less executive experience, is not as good an orator, has less quality in his judgement, & is not held in as high asteem as OPRAH!

We have this exciting & reveling Nomination-Election thanks to the DNP underestimating just how unhappy many voters are with politicans & the way they have contrived to controll our government.  Also, Howard Dean is once again way over his head in the political arena.

Why is there a NATIONAL NOMINATION-ELECTION anyway?!

Those organized as a political club, or "Party" should hold a convention, without any tax payer money, to hammer out issues, adopt a platform & select candidates to send before the people for the Nov. election, with each State determining how, & when, to select electors to send to the Electorial College to elect the Pres. & VP.

STATES' RIGHTS ABOVE clubs, "Parties", or any organization!

Why do citizens put up with such a waste of tax payer resources on a national NOMINATION-election for "Parties" that contrive & scheme to hand-pick candidates by setting "rules" that allow a few States to vote early & REQUIRING the majority of States to vote after candidates, not "Party" approved, have been Filtered Out in this evil discrimination?

Fla. & Mich. have the same RIGHTS as any other State in the Constitution, etc. & any scheme or trick must not stand!!  That applies to all parties, esp. political!

Respectfully,
Billy Bob, Florida
