For Rice, no excuse not to exercise

Posted: Tuesday, April 01, 2008 6:00 PM by Sam Singal

By Libby Leist, NBC News State Department producer

Anyone who has ever made "getting fit" a goal knows that the excuses not to work out are endless and that finding the time can be a challenge. But, imagine you are the Secretary of State of the United States.

You wake up every morning to face a punishing schedule of back-to-back meetings, lunches, dinners, speeches, ceremonies and phone calls, not to mention more travel than any other member of the President's cabinet and rarely a day off. Sounds insane, right?

Well, the May issue of Fitness Magazine offers a glimpse of how Condoleezza Rice, our 66th Secretary of State, stays fit -- both mentally and physically -- in order to keep up with the demands of her job.

In a series of photos that will be published by the magazine next week, and made available today to Nightly News and MSNBC.com, a sweaty and determined looking Secretary Rice shows off her toned physique and killer moves.

Rice tells the magazine that she does cardio six days a week, works out with a trainer at least once a week and treats herself to a bagel on the weekends -- (yes, time to feel guilty here).

Rice gets up at 4:30 a.m. every day to work out, including on her diplomatic missions overseas, but she says its not always easy, "I'm not an automaton. I don't wakeup every morning thinking, 'Oh yeah, let's go!' I have to push myself just like anybody else."

Rice has been working on her core muscles with her trainer in order to improve her golf game, the magazine reports.

The full article hits newstands on April 8th. Check out the link to Rice's "No Excuses" workout.

This is definately admirable and requires a lot of motivation and discipline.
Admirable? Yes. But is Condi sitting in traffic, grocery shopping, cooking dinner, mopping floors, and washing and ironing her own clothes on top of her "job"?
Please. You cannot compare this modern day Superwoman with us mere mortals.:)
Yvonne
Las vegas
Go Condi Go!!! All Hail the next VP! John, you listening?
She definitely takes away all the excuses I have for not working out. Her schedule is much more demanding.
Go Condi!!
Let's hope she's more competent at working out than she is at her job.
How much did she pay for the shoes?
How much did she pay for the shoes?
Great,
She's a qualified personal trainer, and a useless national security expert and lousy secretary of state.
Hey there superwoman....keep up Condi
WITH THE MESS THIS COUNTRY IS IN, WHO CARES ABOUT HER WORKOUT SESSIONS. FIX THIS MESS SHE ENCOURAGED MR. PRESIDENT TO CREATE!!!! GET BACK ALL THE MONEY THAT WAS STOLEN FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!!! BY THE WAY, HOW MUCH IS IT COSTING THE AMERICAN PUBLIC TO PAY HER PERSONAL TRAINER????
big deal, so she works out a bit when shes not busy lying for unca bush and cheney.  demanding indeed!
Gets up at 4:30AM? Okay. SERIOUSLY. What time does she go to bed and how many hours sleep a night does she average?
Way to go, Condi!  Of course she's not ironing her own clothes or grocery shopping (I'm assuming here) but she's got a huge job to do and many people to answer to.  If she can make the time to work out then what's our excuses?  She is an inspiration.  Hell, maybe I'll get my butt on the treadmill tomorrow morning and think of her!!!
I have always admired Condoleeza Rice.  After reading this article, that admiration has deepened.
I agree with Yvonne's comment; it's amazing what Condi can pack into her day, BUT she may as well live on another planet as far as comparisons with 'normal people' go.  She also doesn't have kids, and while she may be exhausted at the end of the day, she's not going to be emotionally and physically drained as Mums with young children are.
An empty gym to myself with two different trainers ... plus no husband, no kids, no aging parents ... I think I could handle it! Let's have an article about a woman who has real-life challenges to working out.
So what? She has been a miserable failure at her job, and has been a cheerleader for one of the worst administrations in US history.
That is a news story, not this silliness.
We all would look like stars and Condi if we didn't have other things to do.  Working out is not a number one priority for moms if you have small children.  It must be nice to have all that "free" time when our world is falling apart right now and she is doing nothing about it.
Well, I guess I better take the clothes off of the treadmill and throw away this bacon sandwich and workout. She has just shamed me!
Yeah, but for us stay at home moms who do all the cleaning, laundry, taxi service, cooking and scheduling for the family there IS room in the day to work out, we just have to have that determination.
What a true inspiration! We all have busy lives...but Condi does not make excuses.
Um
I agree with all the working moms, and God forbid we do not work on our "CORE" muscles to improve our GOLF GAME!
man there are some dumb strumpets commenting on this. Condi is a hero.  She is brilliant, and she has done an amazing job as secretary of state. more power to her.  plus, i think she is good looking.

Jon, a white guy from texas.
Indeed she has been at the core of the most miserable administrations ever. look at all the hinchmen that have had to resign under pressure. With Bush holding on to them for dear life to the last moment.
Does Condoleezza Rice keep a journal. From occasional stories of Miss Rice from the day she lost one of her closest friends to a heinous hate crime in elementry school to Secretary State occassionally touching keys on a grand piano, She seems to have kept a journal?
Please, I do the same.  So to millions of other women. I have been working out for 35 years in addition to all my other responsiblities. I don't love it but I do it.  Its just vanity.  If looking fat and flabby was considered beautiful, we'd all be sitting around watching tv and not giving a damn about being fit and "healthy".
It is a sad (but nonetheless accurate) commentary on this society when certain people are so predisposed to dislike everything about everybody who might not be in complete agreement with them.  So what?  Take the story for what it is.  A very busy, high-profile person, forget her politics.  Her example COULD be encouraging, even to you, if you didn't have your own hate in the way.  This isn't about what she is or is not accomplishing to miraculously cure all the worlds ills single-handed.  It's about her determination to take care of herself, to be responsible for her own health and well being.  Distort it all you like.  If you were not poisoned, even you might be able to find something good. But then, you really don't want to do that, do you?
Stop smoking and exercise the body and the mind; a must to stay healthy and wise. Condi Rice is showing a fine example for men and women of all ages.
True, most of us woman have so much to deal with that she does not but I would not want to walk in her shoes either.  Condi for President!
No, she may not have a kids or a husband but I would say her level of mental exhaustion at the end of the day is more than comparable to what "normal" people go through.  She has an extremely demanding job.  Should that not be taken in to consideration?
She doesn't go to a gym though. She has one in her house or she goes to the White House Gym. She sits in no lines, has no traffic problems, and has no little kids to pic up from school. Like ALL things from this administration, lies, lies, lies.
When you go around the world insisting that the US doesn't torture, all the while the VP has initiated an unprecedented American campaign of torture of detainees, you have to work off all that mendacity somehow.

Clear conscience, Condie?

J
She has been much better at an exercising routine than she has been as Secretary of State.
I AM NOT INTERESTED IN KNOWING HER PHYSICAL FITNESS.
SHE IS IN PREVILEGED CLASS WITH NO HUSBAND, NO KIDS, NO COOKING OR GOING TO GROCERY OR BALANCING FAMILY BUDGET WITH LIMITED INCOME. I KNOW SHE FAILED AS A SECRETARY OF STATE MISERABLY. SHE MISGUIDED HER BOSS IN DIPLOMACY AND FOREIGN POLICY. TELL ME ONE SUCCESSFUL STORY THAT CONDI DID AS OUR SECRETARY OF STATE. I REST MY CASE
Well, I agree with every woman who commited on Condi, and they are right to a certain degree. She may not have a husband, kids, or even do her own shopping, cleaning or cooking, but the woman does incredible things we should all hope one day our daughters can see and maybe know that they too can make significant decisions in running a country, being important or deciding if they want the things we judge her on.
condi has done an exlent job with the hand she was delt.be it fitness or state, she is the best.she is my # 1choice for vip.john &condi, they could not lose...
Her administration and job have nothing to do with fitness.  Our nation is overweight.  The thesis statement here is that we need to get healthy.  Just because you have kids doesn't mean you shouldn't workout.  Let's all just get healthy!!
It's funny how people automatically look for excuses like "she doesn't have kids" or "she doesn't have to wait in line" so they feel better about how lazy and out of shape they are. She is no more or less busy than anyone else, and plenty of women who work full time and have kids and hobbies still make the time to stay in shape. Look in a mirror.
Why all the hate? We may not like her politics but give the woman credit for doing what all of us need to do children, husband or not. Taking care of ourselves! Those of you writing the hate mail are probably sitting around eating bagels and chips and wishing you had the energy this woman has. Get over yourselves
All those whinning moms..they made a choice to be moms..just as Condi made choices in her life...i reared 6 kids over the the past 46 years, enven tho difficult I reap the rewards now, hugs, kisses, love, and awesome grandchildren...I doubt if Condi gets hugs, kisses from your counterpart statesmen on
mother's day..she is a wonderful inspiration for the"working girl"!
Please, everyone, just take it as a story of a woman who pushes herself to work out and stay fit despite a busy schedule. Leave her job out of it. More women...no, more PEOPLE, should be inspired by this to get up and work out and leave the couch behind.
I don't think the point her was to compare her to an everyday person. She's not!!! There have been numerous articles published about how presidents past and present get out and jog miles a day. Whether they're working out or attending a meeting there is still secret service being paid for and there are still world issues--they're not going anywhere. The point is that just because you have a heightened status it doesn't mean you don't attain to reach personal goals. And like many other women (and men) she has to push herself daily to stay healthy. she doesn't hoovercraft to and from meetings. I'm sure she's been stuck in D.C. traffic at least once or twice. I can't believe how easy it is for people to just be incredibly critical of everything a person does. You don't have to agree with her politics, but at least understand that she's human and has goals and desires and as busy of a person as she is she makes an effort to achieve them. For some people this article may be especially motivating. I surely can't drag my self out of bed at 0430 to lift weights. I commend anyone with that type of dedication to anything.
give me a break! who cares! This administration has been a joke and so is condi! i get a workout just trying to keep food on the table! Personel trainer on who"s money this time! Give it up Condi! You should be ashamed to work for this administration!
chris u are so rite self motivation goes a long ppl my mum has 6 kids and works and she finds time to exercise (not much else tho) so if she can any one can condi has her faults but at least shes not lazy like most women i kno
Why do people keep talking about traffic they deal with. People, especially the "moms with no time," do you realize how much traffic there really is in DC? Do you think she just morphs from home to the State Department?
4:30 AM To Work Out!! Way to Go Condy.I Barely Can nGe Up At 6:00 AM To get To work
4:30 AM To Work Out!! Way to Go Condi.I Barely Can nGe Up At 6:00 AM To get To work
I think Condi is admirable and a wonderfully fine example to follow! Classy woman! I support her all the way. So many like to degrade with little knowledge of what is truth.(I agree comparing her to "normal" women with families is flimsy excuses to ease ones own guilt!) I am 52 and have experienced both stay home mom and high stress work invironment. Taking care of our kids(a great honor!), "waiting" in line (oh that's hard!) and taking care of home is important.(whether we physically do it or hire it done is irrelevant since to pay someone else means working to pay them!) Her "family" to worry about is the whole country...even those who degrade her....now THATS stressful! Lighten up on her! It is admirable that she MAKES time to care for herself. We all must MAKE time for the things that are important to us and taking care of ourselves is part of it. If we don't care for ourselves we have little to give others. Whether or not you feel she does her job to your liking is not the issue. It is so easy to criticize others and ignor our own faults.  Atta girl Condi!!!!!
Ms. Rice, keep up the 4:30 am. workouts! I admire the woman; she's got a lot of education and experience to hold the position she does.  I also admire her for working the schedule she does to try to make the world a better place.  She cannot be faulted for the world's like of peace...come on people.  You think you could do better?
All you losers who mock Condi are probably fat and lazy. Stop blaming your kids or your loser husbands for your lot in life. PLenty of career women, who CHOSE to have kids and be married, also find time to stay healthy and look good! Get over your own BS! And I'm a Democrat.
