ABOUT THIS BLOG

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Apologies for a cramped calendar and little time to post. I spent five hours on the set of Sesame Street today. We wrapped filming and the episode will air in August.  I'll post an air date when I know it. Until then, I'll be mum about details... though if Elmo talks, that's something I can't control.

Image: Brian Williams and ElmoRight now we have just broken from our editorial meeting, which morphed into a planning meeting for our Martin Luther King assasination anniversary coverage. We have a group of visiting journalists from Saudi Arabia who I must now go speak to.

About the posts over the past 24-hours, there are two conspiracy theories to knock down: first, that I would ever utter a bad word about our "regulars" -- the folks who make this blog go, and give me energy each day. I love knowing you're reading, and watching, and your loyalty means more to me than you could know. So I can't imagine ever posting a comment which would have been in any way negative. Second: I have no idea which companies make which pharmaceuticals. In my job, I have to know a lot -- and I generally like carrying around a lot of information. The parent companies of pharmaceutical products advertised on Nightly News? Not a chance.

I hope you can all join us for tonight's broadcast. I get to welcome Tom Brokaw back to the Nightly News set, to talk about a project he's justifiably enormously proud of. We'll look for you then.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, You certainly spent a long time filming the Sesame Street episode. I'm sure you had alot of fun with all the puppets. It makes me feel really great to know you appreciate the "regulars" that post comments. I always enjoy reading you Daily Nightly postings and learning something new each day. I appreciate you very much for your hard work and great broadcasts. Especially when Richard is on the broadcast! Looking forward to seeing Mr.Brokaw on the broadcast to speak about his new project. Keep up the wonderful reporting Mr.Williams! Peace to all!

Hi to Laurel, Jackie and Stephanie!! You all are wonderful! Be well!
April Fools!
Maybe Elmo could stop by the Nightly Studio just before the episode airs.  Personally Elmo makes a lot more sense than most politicians do.

The big oil companies were grilled (gas grills of course) by Congress today on their record profits.  Does anyone think these companies are REALLY going to do anything to help the American consumer?  Show of hands?  Hmm not a hand in sight.  In a show of protest truckers staged several protests today regarding the high cost of fuel, in NJ bringing traffic on the NJ Turnpike to a near standstill. (As one who commutes on the NJ Turnpike, thankfully they did mid day).  In other parts of the country similar protests took place.  Personally, I never consider it a good idea to make the Teamsters mad.  The protests though send a loud signal that US commerce is at risk.  And the administration doesn't want to admit that we are in a recession.
Did you find out - Elmo -  does he support an elephant or a donkey?
Hmmm you saying anything bad about regular bloggers sounds like biting the hand that feeds you.  Phew glad that one was cleared up!  :)  That's what happens when I don't get to the blog every day!  Elmo's the best!  He still sits prominently in my very grown up living room.  My mom thought I was kidding when I said I wanted a plush Elmo for my 25th birthday.   So have you inked a deal to let Elmo guest anchor the next time you are away, Brian?

Soooooooooo cool that you got to visit Sesame Street.  It reminds me of a story my mom loves to tell about the Thanksgiving that my dad announced we were having a "big bird" for dinner.  I don't know how old I was, but I wasn't old enough to remember that I pitched a hysterical fit and would not, under any circumstances, allow anyone to eat Big Bird.  Mom says I wasn't convinced he was OK until I saw Sesame Street later that week!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: This blog is not the reason I watch NBC Nightly News, but it is the reason I have so much respect for the work you do.

You're carrying on the fine tradition of Brinkley, Chancellor, and Brokaw. Large shoes to fill, but you fill them well.
He was killed 7 years before my debut, but I still find myself surprised that it really has been 40 years since Dr. King's death.  I wish I had the History Channel in order to see Tom Brokaw's documentary.  Thanks to Dr. King, I grew up in a different world than my parents grew up inside.  It's hard for me to imagine the world that existed prior to his work for equality.  I see racial & ethnic tension, but I'm certain its nothing like it used to be.  We owe him so much.  I will look forward to Nightly News going on the road later this week.

Dying luggage.... not something I want to hear as I prepare for my first flight!  At least I'm not flying through Heathrow!

I missed the story about Vytorin not being as good as marketed.  But I love their ads!  It's got the only Rx commercial I actually like.  I must agree: I'll take the old drugs, thank you very much.  These designer, new cocktails are just being approved too quickly.  Maybe the drug companies and the oil companies are secretly working to ensnare us as a country.  Between the two, we loose so much money!

Which brings me to Congress... I don't like the record profits the oil companies are posting any more than the other average Joes and Janes out there, but isn't it the point of a corporation to make money?  I don't have an issue about them making money; I just want to know how they make MORE when we make LESS and have to pay THEM more.

Hey girls!  You know who you are.  Are we ready to change the country with all our savvy insights?
Brian-I'm new at blogging, but certainly not new to NBC news. I continue to view you as a classy newsperson (and person) who cares about the American people you inform. That is worth a lot to me. (Okay, so which was more fun, filming Saturday Night Live or Sesame Street??)
How dare you say "we have not come that far " when refering to race relations on tonights news celebrating MLK!!!  its because of people like you that we cant get past  racial problems!!!!!  do you really think we all are the same as we were in the 60's   ....give me a break!!!   good by nbc hello FOX.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, On to the broadcast. Regarding the report by Kelly O'Donnell about Presidential Republican Candidate Senator John McCain, he is taking advantage of the opportunity to make sure voters know everything about him. A truly nostalgic trip to all those different States which could help him later. It was nice to hear that he admitted to making mistakes and being an "imperfect public servant" which I think many politicians need to acknowledge. Time will tell after the conventions ans come election day. On another note it was really nice to see Mr.Brokaw in the studio speaking about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was truly tragic the assasination of Dr. King and it was very sad to see the footage on the broadcast of the funeral and burial. His son Martin Luther King III is doing some fine work helping people in the communities. I will look forward to Mr.Brokaw's documentary on Sunday. Finally, the report by Mr.Maceda concerning Heathrow Airport and the lost luggage at terminal 5. That seems to be a huge mess and the fact they had to get Federal Express trucks to deliver the lost luggage to the passengers is unbelievable. Even Mr.Maceda lost his luggage, at least they found it after four days. Not good at all, but better late than never. They really need to overhaul that system. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to all!

Hi again to Laurel,Jackie and Stephanie!!
Hi Brian great picture of you and your friend Elmo. Now that picture beats SNL, it's priceless. Just one question I see a strong resemblance between you to there goes that Brian Bond image.

Brian and all if you get a chance watch Verdict on MSNBC it is great. I really liked Keith's show Saturday and even Wal Mart decided to give Mrs. Shank her money back sweet!

Some times it's better not to go back to your high school. McCain was called out by a student who spoke the truth as he was there only for political motivation and photo ops. It is funny to read how McCain is so high in the polls then read he confuses Al Sadr from Maliki makes you wonder.

Brian you have to help Chris Matthews. He thinks only blacks can play basketball with his comment about Obama. Please give him the book on Lawrence Joseph Bird and Yao Ming. Neither are black and both are great. To bad for Mr. Obama as even Bill Clinton can dance better then him but some people like to dream.

I listen to poor Henry Paulson today. It's so sad, as I am ok with Economics but listening to Paulson he truly is over his head and has no idea what to do. Now one suggestion is to call Paul O'Neill in to help as he saw the problem before it began. Watching Paulson is like looking at a football player use a golf ball to play.

Brian those who follow your show know the deal. It's like sitting with you in the living room every evening as a friend. Now the ties do need a little work but we'll talk about that later. You can't please everyone all the time just keep doing what your doing it's great.

See you at 6:30 pm and as always hi to my friends Lisa, Laural and Stephanie
Tom Brokaw with dark hair, I haven't got room to talk I watched the Huntley-Brinkley Report. Stephanie was will keep how old I was to myself you might laugh to much.  I remember people never believed Oswald was alone in killing Kennedy and then Dr. King's death we knew this was not James Earl Ray.  I guess only God knows the truth but you can bet politics had alot to do with it.  I really hope Senator Obama and his wife get to see Mr. Brokaw's special.  Maybe both will understand that Civil Rights had people of all color involved in making it possible for what we have today. Just using Dr. Kings speeches and name doesn't hold a candle to how much Dr. King and other Civil Rights Workers did.  I remember my Dad telling me on June 21, 1964 to say a prayer for the three young man who were killed for helping register Blacks to vote. Our gratitude should go to Michey Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman. As this case open the eyes of all the United States as to what was really happening in the South.  I remember alot from that period in history and sometimes it up sets me when Law Makers spin/eliminate the facts and the people who played a major rule in our history.

I'm lucky I don't have to take pills I really don't trust the drug companies.

If I get to go to England I'll make sure I go empty handed and come back to the US with a suitcase full of stuff.

I saw the Truckers stop out here in California's news. I really don't blame them this is really high way robbery by the Oil Companies. Look back in 2000 Bush said Iraq would make our oil prices lower, then he was turned down by his friend the Saudi King not once or twice but three times. Then as a last resort Dick Cheney went and asked the Saudi King and he to got a NO.  Your right Brian everyone is effected by the oil prices in one way or another.  But I guess like the Great Depression people that made it learned to live of what they had. I remember my Grandmother talking about left-over soup. I learned very well for my Grandmother and I taught my kids.

Have a great evening from friends Lisa, Laural and Stephanie

Amanda, your post made me smile and want to ask if you too are interested in what will be found when Giants Stadium is demolished? I intended to add about the "gas grills" Congress--read windbags--who "threaten" to take away the oil companies' tax breaks--threaten??!! Why don't they just do it and while they are at it, give the tax break to those who seriously explore alternative energy sources??!! Vetoes can be overruled.

Then I watched Frontline: "Bad Voodoo's War" and I would recommend it to all. It is the story of a California National Guard unit who videotaped their time in Iraq. (Jackie, especially, take note.) If you missed it, you can watch it online at PBS.org--and follow up with the latest videos and blogs.

It follows Frontline's 5 hr. history of "Bush's War" shown last week and now I'm really furious and disgusted with Congress. We all know Bush will not budge on Iraq but Congress could end the war by not funding it.

They do nothing on the economy. They do nothing on Iraq. They do nothing!!! What in the world do they think they are going to run for re-election on? Occupying a different planet than the rest of us?!!

Brian--thanks for updating us on Zimbabwe. We can only hope and pray for the good of the citizens that Mugabe will actually go. However, knowing his history one cannot help but be skeptical. If he goes, I hope Martin Fletcher will be able to get in and report from there. After reading his book, I understand his great sensitivity to Africa and its problems.
Had a meeting tonight, so I watched clips (I really really miss the full "netcast".. I always wonder what I've missed when I just watch the clips.)

I hate to admit this.. I know exactly where I was the evening that Dr King was shot, I was living near Downtown Denver, in an area called Captiol Hill (so called because the state capitol was just down Colfax a couple of blocks.) Just to the north was a neighbor hood called 5 Points, at the time, and for that matter
still today, it was the "black" neighborhood. I clearly remember my father calling and telling me to stay inside my apartment at all costs. Oddly, Denver was one city that never saw race riots, not even that night. At the time I didn't think much of it. In hindsight I suspect, but can't prove it was because of the local leadership in the Black Panthers. One of them later went on to serve on the City Council of Denver during Fredrico Pena's administration.  I point this out to as a way of partly disagreeing with your comment Brian... No one argues  that we have achieved anything like the harmony that Dr King preached at the Mall that famous day, but we have come much further than the white and colored drinking fountians and restrooms I saw as a child visting my Southern grandmother.. at least far enough that a black man can seriously run for President, and a former Black Panther can serve on the City council.

Now, tell us what Elmo is really like!

Jackie, I like the ties.. particularly the striped ones.. see the clip from last Friday answering Newsvine questions that one is really sharp.
Do you ever let Tom Brokaw do the blog?
The drop out map, the housing bubble map, and the over used high gas prices map could all be one in the same. No wonder Liberals rely so heavily on conspiracy theories about Big Oil etc.
Dear Mr. Williams:
Doesn't the nation realise that the oil companies are actually effecting the sale of tires to eighteen wheel truckers? Well, it's happening. Many of them are parking their tractors and their tire gauges say keep the tires you have on for cutting back on mileage from the cost of deisel fuel.
If State Department ran its operation like Sesame Street, and NBC ran its shop like Al Jazeer, then Big Bird would deliver the State Department advisories, and Brian Williams would look quite dashing in long flowing robes... but would we be able to spell, LA LA LA with the same alphabet?  Now, that's cryptic.
Thank you for the excellent rememberance of Martin Luther King tonight! Here was a man who knew his days were numbered and who was truly terrified--but he bravely stayed on his course to change our country forever.

I'm so glad for the commercials--all those drugs we need to buy!  I can rush out to the kitchen to do those dishes and clean up, then run back and catch some more really interesting and meaningful news of the nation and world!
I just walked out on your program.  Your interview of John McCain was the most amateurish I have ever seen on a national news program.  If I was a good lip reader I might have been able to follow it.
