Making a difference on the magic bus

Many school bus rides offer a mix of sleeping students, others horsing around and, perhaps, a few with their heads in books.

In tonight’s "Making a Difference" report we'll introduce you to the kids who ride Bus No. 46 in the small, impoverished town of Grapevine, Ark., an hour south of Little Rock. They’re quickly becoming math and science wizards during their long trek to and from campus on what they call the "magic" school bus.

They’re part of a experimental program called Aspirnauts (aspire, seek, achieve) that connects them to advanced online courses through donated laptops, connected to the Web while on the move. Younger students are engaged with high-tech podcasts through video iPods.

The experimental program was started by Vanderbilt University medical scientist Billy Hudson, who was looking for a unique way to give back to his village, as he refers to his hometown. One day he tagged along for the bus ride - upwards of an hour and a half each way - and realized a lot of time was not being utilized.

"I said, ‘Wait a minute. There has to be a better way’," Hudson says.

As soon as the kids plop themselves down on the padded brown seats, they reach for their laptop or iPod.

The results of this immersion are paying off in high test scores. Several of the students, some still in middle school, have taken college admissions tests as a benchmark and have scored as well as graduating seniors.

Hudson says he’s hopeful the program can be replicated in other rural communities around the country. His wife, Julie, a doctor, manages the day-to-day operations and fundraising, and is awaiting a response to a $2 million federal grant that seeks to expand the program for other students in Grapevine who ride the bus to school.

Great idea. Does the bus manage to maintain a continuous Internet link throughout a 1-hour drive through rural Arkansas? If so, I'm surprised and wonder how it does it.
I am a nurse in Minnesota. I saw this story and was interested in more information about this program. Is there any way I can find out more? Does this program have a web site?
Genius!  Bless you Drs. Hudson!  My daughter endured daily 3 hours school bus rides for six years.  Although your program comes 3 years too late for her, I am sure there are many parents who will be willing to work with you and very much appreciate your solution to this 'rural' problem.
What a wonderful idea, this is an idea that could literally change the world one student at a time.
I think that Mr. Hudson has hit on a wonderful, fantastic idea that NEED'S to be replicated all over this country, with a stipulation from all student's and parent's that would be blessed by this program that if this opportunity is afforded them all parties involved will agree that the participating families will guarantee that EVERY effort will be made by all parties,CHILDREN AND PARENT'S AND TEACHER'S alike that an appropiate grade average for that student will be maintained in order to be a part of this wonderful chance to integrate into the computerized world in which we live and to also learn instead of just wasting valuable time to and from school everyday.Thank you Mr. Hudson for a truly fantastic idea,COME ON U.S.A. LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
This seems like a perfect solution for some of our rural school districts in Nevada where bus rides are from 1-2 hrs. We have hired tutors for the bus ride home but too many times tutors aren't available.  Has Mr. Hudson thought of contacting  Program Directors of 21st Century Community Learning Centers Afterschool Programs throughout the country to ask if this project would fit into their programs? I'd love to talk to him about it!
Wow, I would like to know how the 'magic bus' works as well.  And can I donate the XO I got in the G1G1 program to this project or to one closer to my community?
I was so pleased to hear that someone has given eager minds a way to flourish.  I have a new Ipod that I would love to donate.  Please tell me where I can send it for the Magic Bus program.
Many thanks...Janet
For those interested in more information on the Aspirnaut Initiative (as it is called), please visit its website at http://www.aspirnaut.org/.  Along with an overview on the program, you can download the program proposal and if you wish donate to the program.  Dr. Billy Hudson's email address is the contact link at the bottom of the page.
Thank you, NBC, for telling this incredibly inspirational story.  I hope you will return to this story to show how one courageous act of a teacher/coach rippled into quantum waves of change in thousands of lives.

Robert Theus intervened when he heard Billy Hudson was going to drop out of school to escape his abusive father.  Alice Sloan provided the jobs that helped the rest of Billy's family to escape.

Billy's sister Ann Kincl taught gifted students.

Dr. Hudson became a professor and world-class scientist who made a difference for families suffering from hereditary diabetic kidney disease.  And, he's gone back to Grapevine to help other kids like him.  Wow!
Thank you Ron Mott and NBC news for bringing this fantastic story to the nation.  Too often the good things being done go unnoticed.  Kudos to NBC for  enlightening us.  Blessings on the good doctors for their diligent work in making the Aspirnaut Initiative happen.
TWO THINGS CAME TOGETHER HERE AT THE SAME TIME, THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN MUCH IN THIS COUNTRY.  THERE WAS AN UNDER-USED RESOURCE.  THERE WAS A PERSON WHO FOUND THE SOLUTION AND ACTED.  THAT IS ONE.  A GROUP OF RURAL KIDS WHO SAW THE SOLUTION AND HAD THE COURAGE TO ACT, EVEN THOUGH MOST OF AMERICA GAVE UP ON ARK. LONG AGO.  KNOWLEDGE DOESN'T STOP AT THE STATE LINE OR THE CITY LIMITS.  THEY WILL MAKE FINE EMPLOYEES FOR ANY BUSINESS THAT HAS THE COURAGE TO LOCATE NEAR BY.
It is indeed a wonderful idea and reflects Mr. Hudson's creativity.  However, I have to caution the potential risk of getting astigmatism.  Perhaps eye doctors can comment on this issue.
Wow!  Great idea!  And this report was very inspirational.  Thanks.
Wonderful story because of wonderful people.  Thanks, Billy and Julie, this part of the family couldn't be prouder.  NBC needs congrats as well for focusing on a working solution to a woeful need.  Hopefully, the story and reporter Ron Mott will stir up more support to spread the solution.
Great job!  Loved the story.  Looks like a fun bus to spend a couple of hours.  The children seem so proud.Kudos to you!
What fortunate kids..News of this came to my through Dr. Hudson's cousin in Texas...as a retired teacher I do appreciate the extra attention for kids...It really does take the Village to educate our young people.
