Fallen but not forgotten: Helping the wounded

Army Sgt. Michael Minard, 26, of Grand Junction, Colo., was on his third tour in Iraq when tragedy struck.

"1 October we were out on a recon just a couple clicks north of Sadr City in Baghdad and on the way we got hit by a [roadside bomb]," he said. "It tore through our Stryker and stripped my legs apart."

Sgt. Minard lost both of his legs. He's been recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for the past five months.

I first met him on Feb. 14 during a tour of the hospital's new outpatient clinic. He praised the care he's received at Walter Reed.

"It's been really good," he told me. "I've had no problems. Everything's been amazing, actually."

I saw him again on March 4. He was one of three patients receiving Purple Hearts. I asked if he and his family needed anything.

"No, we can take care of ourselves pretty good," he said. "Just continue taking care of the soldiers overseas. Send them care packages. They need all the support they can get."

Sgt. Minard's wife, Lynda, recently gave birth to their second daughter, Brooke. She joins 4-year-old Kayla. I asked about his future.

"Basically, I'm taking one step at a time right now," he said. "All the goals that I did have, they've all changed, obviously. I know I want to go to school. I need to get a college degree if I'm going to get anywhere."

Sgt. Minard recently learned he has received a full scholarship to Colorado Technical University.

I love the tribute to the fallen soldiers, but there are 3 photos on the left side I could not see, they are off the page. Can this be fixed? Can the link to help at WRAMC be on this site too?
Michael is among many of our heroes that have come home injured. We were once a country that honored our brave soldiers now we hear lip service.  Even viewers don't want to see the horror or the death/injured troops as one blogger said it's to hard to see and hear.  Yet our Law Makers are still sending our soldiers back to the Iraq Civil War for 4 or 5 tours.  Americans have gotten lazy and we're paying the price.  Most want to blame Bush/Cheney for this mess I say every American is responsible for what happens to the United States of America.
SPC Kirby,
In response to your questions, the latest casualties are on page 4 of 4. The photos you see on the left side are on page 3 of 4. Just go back a page to read them, and keep going back to read about all of the casualties from this year. As for helping the wounded at Walter Reed, simply go to www.wramc.army.mil and click on "donate" in the bottom right of your screen.

Sgt Minard is my brother in la and is an amazing and outstanding hero as every who serves in this war
Can anyone tell me about the program on NBC about a week ago regarding former Marines who are now home and learning about the movie production industry? Brian Williams related the story about a family who sold their home in order to underwrite this particular production company/school.  My son is a Marine who is currenly on active duty but has been diagnosed with a health problem who is interested in learning more about this film production school. Thanks!
I wanted to thank everyone for the comments Sgt Minard is my brother in law and he is recovering so well soon he and his family will hopefully leave Walter Reed and begin a new family thanks for the warm and kind words
