Ringing question

By Lester Holt, NBC News Anchor

Good day from New York. Brian is taking the night off and I'll be sitting in tonight.

When my phone rings at 3 a.m., my first thought is, something awful has happened. If I'm lucky, it's just a wrong number. It's safe to assume wrong numbers aren't put through to the President of the United States, and so a middle of the night call to the commander-in-chief can't be good. That's the premise of a new Hillary Clinton ad airing in Texas, that has been getting plenty of airing on the cable news channels today as a point of political discussion.

The ad says, "It's 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. But there's a phone in the White House and it's ringing. Something's happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call."

The camera then shows Hillary Clinton picking up the phone. The spot, and its not-too-subtle implication that Senator Clinton is better qualified to handle a national security crisis, brought a quick response from Barack Obama. Tonight on Nightly News, NBC's Andrea Mitchell will show the ad, Obama's response, and report on the the tightening race in Texas as well as Ohio.

Word that a man found in a Las Vegas hotel today was suffering from ricin poising set off quite a few alarms today. Ricin is an especially deadly poison that is lethal even in tiny amounts, and has no known antidote. While there are a lot of blanks to be filled in on this story, the word from Las Vegas authorities is that this does not appear to be foul play, and there is no apparent connection to terrorism. So what's it all about? Our George Lewis is working the story and will have much more on tonight's newscast.

Erin Burnett from CNBC will stop by this evening to help us put today's Wall Street slide into perspective. The S&P 500 lost 3 percent and the Dow and Nasdaq each shed 2.75 percent.

We'll have those stories, as well as one woman's long held secret that shatters a commonly held assumption about eating disorders, on the Friday edition of NBC Nightly News.

Hey Lester!

Looking forward to seeing you on the Nightly News tonight.  I think it should always be you subbing whenever BriWi is unavailable!
All the best.  Hope everything's alright with Mr. Williams.
No doubt Andrea Mitchell will "report" the story in such a way to show her bias against Hillary Clinton.  I used to have great respect for Ms. Mitchell however the last few months have changed that entirely.  She is blatantly biased against Hillary Clinton and lately does not even try to hide it.  Perhaps she can just wear a Barack Obama pin on her jacket and NBC can use graphics to point arrows to the pin.

I have not yet decided on a candidate to vote for this November.  The biased reporting of all the media makes me wonder if the "giant media heads" didn't gather months ago to script out the entire election process.  More and more in my opinion it is the media who decides, not the voters, who will be the prominent candidates.

While I am on my rant, though I have the highest of respect for Brian Williams, I feel he too has demonstrated a bias in the election process.  But my pet peeve is just why do Brian and Tim Russert have to be "on the ground" for the key primary states?  They sit in a studio whether it is in Ohio or North Dakota (not that they would really go to that one).  It is not as if they are doing the "man on the street" interviews.  I just don't understand it.

Looking forward to your reporting this evening Mr. Holt.  You always bring a warmth and professional demeanor to the broadcast.

Happy Weekend ALL!
That ad is mild compared to the GoreBull Warming one where the little girl is left standing alone on the railroad tracks with a speeding train closing in.
Fear tatics.....THis is so Hillary using the tatics that she speaks against.  Said one thing does another
I've seen the ad, and think it's great!
Since I write in frequently (and complain occasionally) regarding editorial content, I thought it only fair to give praise where praise is due.

The other day, I...

...whined about too much presidential campaign coverage...and the broadcast had less.  The report by John Yang about campaign volunteers was really interesting.  (Although, I can't say I know anyone who can afford to spend $1,000.00 a day of his/her own money on travel, food, and lodging - or anything else, for that matter!)

...whined that I wanted more reports from the Middle East, via Richard Engel...and there he was, reporting from Afghanistan.  I could be wrong, but I don't think he's covered that war before.  It's more interesting to me when he travels the region like that, as opposed to being limited to stand-ups from some hotel in Baghdad.  (There's certainly enough turmoil to cover, in that part of the world!)

...whined that I wanted to see more of the superb Jim Maceda...and there he was, reporting from Russia.  It is so important to cover that region, as we are literally watching the beginnings of a second Cold War unfolding.  The progress made under Gorbachev and Yeltsin is gradually being chipped away.

...whined that I wanted to see more of the no-less-superb Ned Colt...and, well, at least he has been on Today and MSNBC, reporting about Prince Harry's deployment to Afghanistan.  Maybe he will be on tonight's broadcast.

You get the point.  And I do, too.  I realize a great deal of thought goes into deciding how to cover a news day, and I'm sure it's difficult when you only have half an hour.  I just appreciate a little variety every now and then.

So, THANK YOU!

P.S. - Lisa M. - Thanks for your kind words.  I'm sure we do have more in common than just our mutual admiration for A Certain Someone!  (Although, I sense from your postings that you're a way nicer person than I am!)  In addition to reading the blogs of Mr. Williams and Mr. Holt, I enjoy seeing what you, Stephanie, Jackie, and Joan have to say.  I think you're a great group of women with differing viewpoints, and that's what makes it so interesting.  And, of course, it's always nice to feel "heard."  Be well, always!
Good Evening Mr.Holt, Nice to see you this evening filling in for Mr.Williams. He deserves a night off from Nightly News. Now on to the broadcast. The report by Dawna Friesen concerning Prince Harry returning to Britain after a ten week duty in Afghanistan showed how dangerous it can be for someone of his position to fight in that region and not be recognized. He really wanted to serve his country and he did so and I'm sure he understands why he had to leave because it would pose a real threat to himself and his men if he stayed fighting. There are far too many terror groups in the region and they would probably look for him aggresively. I think it is wise that he returned to Britain. On another note the report by Mr.Brokaw about the young voters being extremely energized about the Presidential Candidates was interesting. The students at the University of Texas seemed excited and passionate in their support of their candidate.  It is good the young people are involved in the election process this year. They should continue to be excited every time our country goes through this process. The job of being President of the United States is daunting and requires the person to make some extremely difficult decisions. Dealing with domestic issues as well as meeting with foreign leaders over problems in other nations. It certainly will not be easy for anyone elected. Hopefully, after the person is in office the young people follow the progress of the new President and continue to broaden their minds over matters of our nation in the world. Democracy at work. Finally, the "Making a Difference" segment was very nice about the high school band and how the director of  the band has made such a positive impact on the students. It is great they are going to Beijing,China for the Olympics this year. Nice piece! Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to all!
We couldn't help but notice the obvious pro-slant towards Obama in Tom Brokaw's piece tonight.
Hilliary needs to get a grip.  Desperate
people call for desperate measures, something
like that.

It was a nice surprise to see you filling
in for Brian Williams this evening.

Tom Brokaw was in Lousville years ago, promoting his brilliant book, "The Greatest Generation" and
I stood in line for an autograph.  Hawley-Cooke,
no longer in business, sponsored the event downtown..
Good day Lester!
tomorrow we choose prsident

with cold winds and wetty weather

Hi Lester,
see your reports again but please invite Brian
As much as we don't know about Barack...I find this to be a good ad.  Will he really not put his hand over his heart when the national anthem is played? Is he a muslim? His wife for the first time is proud to be an American?  I tell you I pray that Hillary is the nominee; however, if she is not, knowing what the IRAQ war has done in my own family circle, I would want to vote democratic; however, I have a real problem not knowing "who" Barack really is and "what" he represents.
My fear is that it took so long for her to pick up the phone. It probably would have gone to voicemail. At least Obame picked up quicker.
Mr. Holt, the report on credit cards was
informative.  I opened an account at Stein-Mart
in Louisville at Christmas and when the statement came, inronically, it was billed to General
Electric where both my husband and I were
employeed at one time, and, of course, the
parent-company of NBC.

It was a wonderful surprise to see you fill in
for Mr. Williams on Friday night.  I know you
do from time to time but on Thursday he did
his usual signoff about Friday night, so it
was totally unexpected and as always a thrill
to see you present The Nightly News.
Dear Lester Holt:

I loved the story done in Russia by the correspondant for Nightly News. Although, I had not met this woman the Russian interpreter mentioned. Nwandi Lawson works for Georgia Public Television and I once called about who is permitted to enter Georgia Public Broadcasting. I didn't have much luck in the fall of 2005. I do not know whether I will in the future I had not attempted to find out.

Although, I do sent Ms. Lawson messages and I try to remind her that where ever she lives and what she applies to go to and from home; I don't know where it is. Maybe their are birds that chirp in her neighborhood. I am not looking for it!
Another Clinton for President? What a drag. New York sells it's Senate seats. I hope she got a kick out of her time there but be the next President? That's just a little to juvenile for me. Hillary sleep in your own bed tonight.
It's 3 a.m., and the phone rings in the White House. Tony Rezko (post pardon) picks up the phone. "It's a national emergency. Rod and Patti both need a pardon as wel1" Whom would you trust? "I'm Barack Obama, and as soon as I can figure out whether Al Qaeda is Iraq or not, I will approve this message."
Lester I heard about Harry and I know Diana would be proud of her son. The UK has a great leader in Harry and William.  Harry could have gotten out of serving or even got deferments but he chose to stand up and be a man. It's always an honor when your country is in need that a real man stands up and serves.

Living in California it's always a question. But with the problems around the World Hillary is right. I thought of how the people must have felt in Iraq when they went to bed only to hear bombs and screams. It was sad we made the mistakes and bombed areas with woman and children.  But like Iraq they didn't know until it was to late, with the direction our Leaders are going it is something to think about. As John McCain says he will bomb Iran I'm sure Iran will do what it takes to protect their people, just as the US would if we were attacked. If Obama is chosen as President he will surely get John Kerry to take care of these problems.  Hillary is ready to take charge but Americans don't seem ready to pick a qualified President this time.  I guess we can look forward to 2012 for a President to get things cleaned up.  I know future generations of woman will realize America doesn't elect woman as Presidents do don't bother to apply not matter how qualified you are.
On your report last Sunday about older women (44) having
the same problems about eating as young women, I
cannot resist this comment. In this morning's
Louisville Courier Journal there was an an article
and picture of Lauren Hutton who is now 64  44 should
look so good.  Looking forward to seeing your program
this evening.Mr. Holt
Dear Lester Holt:
There is a glitch in my computer and it is my third
attempt.  Hopefully, third time is charm.
I especially enjoyed your show last Sunday about
older women (44) have eating habits of young women.
There was an article and picture of Lauren Hutton,
who is now 64, in this morning's Louisville
Courier-Journal and 44 should look so good.  I fess
up to eating a bowl of ice cream at midnight and it
soothes the stomach almost as good as a tummy rub.
I look forward to see your program, as always, this
evening.  Of all of them, you are the best.
I think that when  Hillary Clinton uses these type of fear adds on television and radio, She should think of our children who are the ones who really are the ones they fear the most. This just goes to show us what she really cares about. I wouldn't let her answer my phone at three in the morning!
Help expose Obama the BIG ZERO by sending the link to all... See all the Obama family lies and manipulations.

www.obamatruth.org

and

www.stop-obama.org
why does it take six rings for a so call commander in chief to answer the phone. She knows it is the most important phone in America, it's not her house phone debating whether to or not to answer the phone wondering if its a call from Bill at one of his womens house. Was she only asking the white and latino people who they think should answer the phone i did not see any black people or any other race of people in the add. If she wins then what does that make Bill. If she is the choice for democrats my vote will go to McCain for she is no match for John McCain
