The former secret

That the British press -- that any media -- kept the secret of Prince Harry's location in Afghanistan (for 10 weeks) is these days quite remarkable. As I write this, with the proverbial cat out of the bag -- and the Prince exposed -- the British military is apparently mulling over pulling him out. The fear is that any Taliban unit knowingly stationed near a British outpost could randomly shell, mortar and fire on the Brits in hopes of scoring a random and fatal shot, resulting in tragedy. The shame of it is that Prince Harry wants only to serve and fight, and for that he deserves thanks and praise. He also wants to be left alone. At least he had 10 weeks of infantry anonymity, even if it must now come to an end.

In this line of work, we often know more than we can say. When, early on in the Iraq war, retired General Wayne Downing walked me into a Tactical Operations Center in the desert and showed me the electronic wall map displaying the entire U.S. war plan and the real-time location of all American fighting units, he didn't need to tell me that I was not to speak of it elsewhere. Ditto when we learn of the President's plans to travel to a war zone, or of protection plans for the President or candidates for office. It's a simple equation we apply, which balances the right to know... the NEED to know... with the value of American lives. Thankfully, common sense prevails more often than not.

We'll cover the story of Prince Harry tonight, and we'll also look at the economy and politics, and the auto business.

I must say I was thrilled -- overwhelmed -- to see the robust response to our remembrance of William F. Buckley last night. The truth is, time was running short yesterday afternoon, I was being called to the studio, and I had yet to write the WFB remembrance for the broadcast. But I was determined to tell the peanut butter story for our blog readers, and I'm glad I soldiered through. I thank you all for reading it. I'm glad that it seems to have touched a lot of hearts, and I thank all of you for writing, as always.

We hope to see you on the broadcast tonight, and thanks for watching.

Now that the story has leaked of Prince Harry being in Afghanistan no doubt the media will over hype, analyze beyond in depth and literally beat the story to a death.  Rational people can only hope that in so doing the media does not contribute to a tragic result for the prince.

It certainly should not be the top story of the evening.  The Illinois mall explosion, President Bush continuing to live in denial that the US economy is in a recession (Mr. President, wishing does not make it so) or the completely unexpected FBI perjury probe of Roger Clemens and countless other stories should be told before the Prince Harry story.  Let's try and keep him safe as long as possible.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, I must say it is remarkable the British Press kept it a secret that Prince Harry was in Afghanistan for ten weeks. He really wanted to serve his country and he did so bravely. It is too bad it has to come to an end, but his safety would be in jeopardy. What retired  General Wayne Downing showed you in the Tactical Operations Center is very interesting, yet not something you would explain to the general public. It always should be on a need to know basis. One has to use common sense. Again, I enjoyed the peanut butter story last evening. There is someone I know that eats peanut butter right out of the jar with a spoon. They might like the "Red Wing" brand! Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to all!

To:Laurel- I hope your day has been good today!
Be well!
I was so disappointed when I got up this morning and heard about Prince Harry serving on the front lines.

I wish the media had kept their mouths shut until Harry returned home.  His eagerness to serve should have been respected and the idiotic "journalists" who broke the story should be ashamed.  Besides sinking to a new low, they have also endangered Harry and all of his fellow soldiers.

As a fellow fan of peanut butter, I LOVED the story you told last night.  I have to ask though:  how was the pb that WFB sent to you?  I've never had that brand and I must know if it's worth finding.
Hello Mr. Brian!

You are sure i do not know exactly whether you hold war in Afganistan or not and where are situated your troops. The matter is that all europe including even ukraine joins NATO and locate missiles on their territories and i see we rest alone with our weapons
if we come over NATO one day there will not be any visual enermy to fight against in the world. I believe that people can engage themselves to fights natural deseases as lack of water food calm.

Best regards Mr. Williams.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, I am always happy to see Richard on the broadcast! I just had mentioned I missed seeing him and there he was this evening! Always wonderful to have him reporting! Now on to the broadcast. Richard's report from the frontlines in Afghanistan certainly showed how difficult it is for the US troops to capture these fighters. The nightime footage of the troops separating the women and children while speaking to the men and taking their photographs seemed very intense because the situation is so very fragile. Seeing the Tora Bora snow covered mountains brings to mind the fact that Bin Laden either was there or is still hiding. One never knows for sure. I must say it was nice to see Richard speaking with the Commander Dan McNeil (No Relation) in that he must use every resource possible and as Richard was told 4 border crossings are not patrolled. It seems the troops will be in that region for a long time. Stay safe as always Richard!! God Bless all of them who so bravely serve our country. The report by Mr.Taibbi concerning Prince Harry fighting in Afghanistan for ten weeks and it was kept a secret exhibits how dangerous the region can be for the Prince or any soldier. When Prince Harry spoke about the fighters popping their heads out then disappearing it sounded very scary. He knows that his presence has to be extremely guarded because it can put his men in even more danger. I hope that with the release of this information it does not cause him or his men any harm. The series titled "Where they Stand" and the subject of the War in Iraq really brings to mind the difference in how the candidates view this conflict. This has gone on for almost five years and these troops are stretched to their utmost limit. Logistically, it will take a while for all the troops to be withdrawn. One cannot be totally sure what would happen after our troops left the region. Hopefully, these people would be able to live in a peaceful and stable country. But it will take time. In the meantime the candidates continue to give their solutions. Peace will be the victor. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Great report Richard!! Always stay safe Richard!! Peace to all!

I have watched NBC Nightly News for years but I'm going to change networks because I feel that your reporting of the presidential campaign is biased, no actually I have reliazed the truth of this.  It's so evident that you are broadcasting news that supports only one of the candidates (this includes Republicans and Democrats).  I am retired educator.  This is disheartening to me because of the influence your news broadcast has on our society.  This is my first e-mail to you and probably my last, but how I wish you would be honest about the campaign.
Hi Brian your welcome for the comments yesterday on Mr. Buckley he was a great part of America. No I will not send a gift but I will spread the word to my friends to watch your show if they want the only fair/balanced news today.

I know Diana would be proud of Harry as he is doing a great job. Now I'm sure it brings pride to the English people as he has shown he's a real man. Not like some men who have their Fathers get them out of serving because their scared. Or like other American leaders with 5 sons who call serving the US by only campaigning for their Father.

Good to hear President Bush say there's no problem with the high gas and food prices. That tells just how much he knows and cares about the American people.

Roger Clemens is safe from prosecution as he has George H.W. Bush who will make sure not charges are filed.

I read about Lewis changing his endorsement. Brian I was always told you know who your real friends are when your at your lowest, and this is a great example to Hillary and Bill Clinton. But Lewis was always jealous of Dr. King anyway so I guess he thinks this is his chance to get in the History books.

Brian I read to much of the law cases today. I now see how Siegelman who is innocent was found guilty by a corrupt Judge. Also the Federal Government vs. Jean Palfrey is another one of Cheney's selective false charges. I found the root of the dismissal it's the Fruit of the Poisonous Tree Doctrine. Yes she was charged with Prostitution and Rico Act. No prostitution is found but Rico Acts wasn't approved by then Attorney General or Deputy AG which is required by Law. Looks like another case that was filed by fake charges. So many more will come as this Justice System has been run by the Vice President's office for 7 years. At lease we have former AG Gonzales and Deputy McNulty under oath saying they didn't know what they sign or approved.

Brian, please tell Tim Russert that Hillary gets her campaign funding from people like me ask he asked that question. Also I noticed your report that she raised 35 Million dollars in February.  Ask Tim to ask McCain that question and see what his answer is.  Speaking of McCain if he is elected President he will be the first President of the United States who isn't a natural born US citizen. Leaves way for the Governor of California to be President and any other foreign person who gets a US citizenship. Now Hillary and Obama aren't the only History making cases these year.
Mr Williams,
I think it would be wise to report your stories a little more factually.  It was NOT the Drudge Report that let the "cat out of the bag", the story was broken by a German newspaper and an Australian magazine.  Drudge may have been the one to expose the story in America, but he was NOT the one who initially broke it to the world.  It's time for the mainstream media to exhibit a little responsible journalism and report the entire story instead of taking the opportunity to make a thinly veiled strike at a conservative media outlet.
my dad is wanting some book he says you wrote about a war.  can you send me the name of the book?  thanks
I say: shame on the Drudge Report for spilling the beans on Prince Harry.  I agree that it is commendable that Harry wants to fight; we all know he could easily get out of it if he wanted to do so.  I also think its commendable that he got to spend 10 weeks in Afghanistan while most journalists stayed quiet.

As usual, Richard Engel provided a stellar report from Afghanistan, made all the more "serious" by night vision.  While Tora Tora might be remote, its snow-topped mountains are gorgeous!  They view reminded me of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire.

With my siblings having babies, auntie is now in the market for a larger vehicle.  I can promise the Big Three that I will not be purchasing any of their cars. My dad was the only one who loved Ford. My brother has two Subarus; one for him & one for the wife.  One sister just bought a Mazda van; the other one bought a Honda Element last year.  I have owned a Subaru and two Toyotas, and I plan to keep it that way... by getting another Subaru.  I am feeling sad that after 9 years I will be saying goodbye to my Corrola (it's 12 years old & still a babe with 158k miles) and it still purrs very well.  It's just crowded and I need to get rid of the manual transmission.  As I refuse to purchase a brand new car, I will not be seeing the "new quality" of the Big Three for many years to come. I would not have been able to hang onto my car for 9 years had it been anything other than Japanese.

Did I say thanks for the peanut butter story last night?  It reminded me of President Reagan's love affair with jelly beans. Always enjoy hearing your "behind the scene stories" but even more, appreciate the restraint to not report on things (such as the U.S. war plan) and the other things we do not see.
Brian:  I am a devoted listener and fan of yours.  Like you, I spent some quality time in Connecticut in your high school rival town of Darien.  I won't say how old I am but Artis Gilmore played on New Canaans' basketball team when I was in school.
NBC's practice of re-airing stories shown on your show on TODAY, or MSNBC is disturbing to me.  It's another version of corporate greed.  Why should I have to slog through more and more commercials to see stories previously viewed.  By the way, the drug ads, are getting funnier and funnier.  I expect to see a parady any week on SNL.  In many cases the legal info on possible side effects are worse than the ailment.
Brian:  Great job on the debate the other night! Please give Tim Russet a big hand shake for me and a big pat on the back.
Mr. Williams, you neglected to tell your American audience that the media agreed not to report Harry's deployment in exchange for getting regular pictures, video and text of his day-to-day activities once the planned four-month assignment was completed.  The media calls this shivery, but regular people call it bribery or big media standard operating procedures.
Shame on Matt Drudge, the Australians, the Germans, whomever!  Their behavior would be considered treasonous, if they were reporting it about their own countrymen.  (CNN's Michael Ware had some pretty choice comments for them on Anderson Cooper 360 last night; however, they were in his native "Australianese," and were therefore unintelligible!)  And, yes, Princess Diana would surely be proud of her son, as all soldiers' mothers must be.

P.S. - Yes, thank you, Lisa, my day Thursday was a definite improvement on Wednesday!
Hi Brian; am disturbed to see major reports of red state republicans voting in the democratic primary with the intention of voting republican again this fall. What is wrong with our democracy that this is not discouraged by the media in the strongest terms. Steering elections...the swift boat episodes ...and the "Hussein denials" look to make this the most illicit election in our history at a time we need to be together as a country. Are we seeing the end of our democracy because of the devious..win at any cost..Carl Roves of this world. Please speak out on this issue, have always respected you forthright and honest evening news.TLC,Dayton,Ohio
I could have waited several months to read about Harry having been to the war. News media is a Monster and uncaring, interested only in their newspaper drama. They didn't care that a young man was doing  his part, working along side his fellow soldiers. Yes as always to get the Story in print they would endanger his life and the lives of his fellow soldiers. It is an old story isn't it? The public is not that unfeeling.I admire that young man and hold the newspaper people in scorn, AGAIN.
You're right!  That is remarkable that the press could keep that big a secret for that long, Mr. Williams.  Wow!
Brian, While it is commendable for you to have seen the war plans for Iraq and not divulged this information to the public, I feel it was very irresponsible of Gen. Downing to have shown them to you in the first place. Given the fact you have now shared this "tidbit" of information with the world via the web, you have made a target of all noncombative reporters who could very well be targeted by the enemy to try to gain tactical information. In the future, your journalistic integrety should not allow you to see such sensitive information not only for your saftey but the safety of the troops.
Princes belong in their palaces, safely tucked away.
If they venture out, it should be strictly incognito,
known only to their tight inner circle.

Generals, inviting journalists to war-rooms, should be cashiered, pronto.
In fact, they should not be even able to do so.

Presidents in denial, take their country down.
The very thing we are witnessing now re the USA.

Individually, I (66 yrs of age) owe the USA my life for nuking Japan,
saving millions in the process - something that is not often mentioned in articles about the subject.

That is why it gives me (and I suppose many others) a heartburn to see what the present Administration
does and omits to do.
I'd wish America(n people) so much better...

The coming election, November this year, will be a watershed. God bless...

Ray.
Shame on the producers of The Drudge Report!

Exposing troops to additional danger just to get a story out first, how low can you get?

I am in favor of a boycott of the Washington Post.

This was unprofessional and it should be considered a treasonous act against U.S. troops and the British military. Heads should roll!
BREAKING NEWS!!!  BREAKING NEWS!!!
Kandahar, Afghanistan, Feb 29, 2008
IT HAS BEEN REVEALED that the person thought to be PRINCE HARRY serving with the British Army in Afghanistan is actually AN IMPERSONATOR and ACTOR named Reginal Quimby-Jones....!!!  PRINCE HARRY is serving in the war on poverty in Cros-de-Cannes, France at the RED LIOBN PUB there with barmaids Ingrid, Lilly and Anastasia....WAY TO GO HARRY!!!!
Man, you just got to love this guy! But don't tell anyone...MI5 or MI6 (I forget which number :( ... will kick your ass.
Swisspeas
VOTE FOR MCCAIN...!!! DOWN WITH HILARY AND OBAMA...WE DON;T WANT MEAN WOMEN OR ISLAMIC LAP DOGS IN THE WHITE HOUSE...KEEP IT HONORABLE!!! GOD BLESS THE USA!!!
It is good to see the elite up in arms.  If some rich kid falls for his country, it is no different from a poor kid.  He is a person of honor for fighting for his country.  I am glad the leaders of England sent him over there instead of him driving a bus or getting drunk all the time.
Dear Brian,
I think the report about Prince Harry was carefully calculated so that the finding of where he is would be reason enough to get him off the front lines.  Whatever time served there was enough.  He did more than Dubwa.  He did more that Clinton.  I think he has been forgiven for the Nazi armband incident.

That said, I saw the last few moments of your time with John Stewart on his show and am enduring a replay so i can see the whole thing.  I am glad you stood up to him as well as you did. I hated him on the Oscars.  I don't really like him but I realize you go where you're asked.  Guess my 55 years is showing.
It is ashamed that The British Military let the cat out of the bag. They should have just kept quiet and let Prince Harry serve as a soldier.
Now the world knows where he is including the evil people.
Prince Harry might be willing to lay down his life for his country, but he knows it wouldn't be right for others to be bombed and killed because the enemy wants to kill an English prince. Maybe the British military can pull that unit out of their current location and move it elsewhere, IF THE MEDIA WILL KEEP THE SECRET this time.

Hi Brian: I was very happy to hear that Prince Harry had a chance to serve our country and show he was human just like all of us. I am very proud to see he atleast got a start at it. I was so proud of him. Shame news had to ruin his chance and ours to see him accomplish what he set out to do: SERVE HIS COUNTRY He still get's my respect!!! Heads should roll over this leak as it has also exposed our troops at risk!!!
all i have to say is prince williams has alot of  spunk and is quite a man in my books to show he can fight for our rights and for his troops, but he is a prince and that will follow him to the grave so hopefully he can get out asap so he can enjoy the rest of his years and his fellow troop members also.
I was a regular reader of Drudge, until now.  I will NEVER pull up his page again.  The "outing" of Prince Harry was indefensible, and the Royals should be furious, and rightfully so.  Prince Harry is certainly terribly dissapointed.  Look for more clashes with the press in the future, and I won't blame him one bit.
Unlike the Duke of Windsor's 'service' during WWII this young prince chose the hard road. I am surprised at the theatre of his service for, annonymously or not, he was certainly placed in harm's way, and I question the wisdom of the British military for bowing to this. I would be surprised if any of his subjects would have objected to his having had a non-combat M.O.S.
I also say shame on the media outlet who leaked the news about Prince being on the front lines. It not only put him in harms way but the troops with him. I agree that is should be considered a treasonous act.
The "outing" of Prince Harry's location in Afghanistan put both him and the soldiers he served with in jeopardy.  It was a violation of British National Security and yet no one at NBC calls the AMERICAN blogger to task for violating the agreement the British Military brokered with the press ... including mainline American press.  Yes, the Drudge report was not the first.  But, it was the most public and provocative.  Shame on the American media for giving one of their own a pass on something that puts soliders lives at risk.
I think is a crying shame that people that are suppose to keep things quiet are found to be flawed. It is such an admirable trait for Prince Harry to both want to and be able to server his country and the cause of freedom around the world. I agree that his mother would be proud. I believe that too often there is too  much info available to the media and I despise Drudge for leaking this information. I think he should be prosecuted if anything should happen to the young prince should anything happen to him as a repercussion of the ill advised Drudge.
Dear Brian,
I hear that the media blew Harry's cover. It is interesting that the source has never been identified. It appears that the media takes care of their own. If it were somebody other than the media you guys would be all over it.
The prince choose the right things to do for his people and the world, may god bless you harry and don't forget we have my prayer all the time
and all soldier on frontline, life it's immported for everyone but who knows, only JAH'S know, well done HARRY you're my hero .
There's a very good reason Prince Harry is so interested in war... in numerous quatrains Nostradamus speaks of "Redbeard" who saves England from the dark headed enemy during the great war to come. Look for Prince Harry to grow a beard in the years to come. The Taliban will never get him because the future of England  rests on his shoulders.
Dear Brian: I have just moved, to not have any TV hooked up yet. Yeah, for E-mails and the Net.. I can read and see some of the news herein.

I continue to be concerned about our country, and the War in Iraq... Evil exists.  It is very difficult to ream it out wherever it lurks. At least we are trying to do so there, with a plan and partners.

As for Prince Harry... I am certain the world knew he had chosen to be a real soldier. Betraying him, and helping the enemy was wrong.. Why couldn't whomever have just told the story, "He is in Iraq or ? fighting on a front line.."  That's all we needed to know, to further admire him.  He has lifted the image of his mother, and his family to new heights. Praises be.

And praises to all the men and women who believe fighting for right is important to do! They are all in my prayers always. They are our knights in shinning armor!

Thank you for keeping Class in journalism, Sir..
Blessings to you!

My other comment is to the readers and listeners: What else would you like President Bush to say of the ecomony?  "Well, I must report to y'all that the economy stinks!  Hord your dollars, except to buy gas and shop Walmart!"  Guess what? Then we would see a sinking ship in the horizon, and our economy would be in the gutter.  Only three things are going to spur the economy: 1. Knowing whomever the presidential candidates are truly going to be.
2. Somehow the leaders and generals of the Iraqi War showing to the world that there is real progress being made to route out and defeat the Talaban...3. For the American people to go about their business as usual, buying, spending, investing and not being fearful of the future...

We are not yet in a depression, but we sure as Hell could be if we believe we are... And I'm a Realtor on vacation.. because what can I sell but foreclosures?
I'm waiting for the thaw, and Spring to come around the world.. It is going to be a GREAT Year in 2008, if we let it be!

My hat is off to Hillary, whether she wins or loses.. What an incredible achievement she has accomplished being the first woman ever in our country to ligitimately seek the presidency.. I'd like to see her win for that reason only, and I'm a Republican!

Buckley was a man with brains and style, not to be forgotten because he was a THINKER...and a doer.

I eat crunchy peanut butter out of the jar, and I'm allergic to peanuts. However, they are a great source of protein, and a yummy snack even for dieters...

Carry on!
First of all let me just state that in the far past Kings use to fight side by side with their soldiers, they did not fear death or capture because it was an honor to be fighting with their country men!  You people who say he needs to be taken back to the castle and to safety are truly ignorant! Come on people get real! He is a person...yes he has the title of prince....at the same time he is JUST A PERSON. Let the guy live his life the way he wants to. Just because he comes from royal blood does not mean he should not be able to live the way he wants! And who are you all to judge. If you wanted to do something with your life and then were told that you could not...such as fight for your country, or be a doctor you would do everything in your power to make it happen...because you are human and just want to be happy. The ignorance and blind siding of titles yet pokes its ugly head up again! You people need to worry about yourselves!
just,i dont like muslim to be the next president of the USA.mrs.clinton its ok as long shes a christian and a known woman, but barak obama man a scarry name not english not fit to call american pres.why i care im a filipino canadian anyway, but im pro west same as my father who serves the american during second world war while jap, invade the philippines.
Gee's you would of thought Prince Harry was a commando or something,  Lets face it Prince Harry was there for publicity, making his daddy proud.  I never heard of anyone doing so little and getting such respect. England you should be ashamed of yourselfs. Oh and by the way don't any of you have straight teeth. So much for socialized medicine.
Semper Fi
Australianese??
You mean like how Britons and Americans are unintelligible at times?
Most royalty in history earned their honor fighting on the battle field. Why can't Harry? Oh, that's right....today's youth is entitled to honor...they no longer need to earn it. Kudos Harry for serving your country although you could have gotten out of it!!! You are a man of honor!
As with any Leak(ed) sensitive information as in the leak of purported CIA agents, Troop movements,Military Data, Prince Harry's post, rises to espionage by said culprit(s)-punishable by Life Imprisonment or Death.

As a American Citizen, who respects the need(s) for secrecy.  I view those that violate their oath/pledge to keep secret, that which needs to be kept secret-a violation of the Public-Entity trust, that has been placed on them, and MUST subject those apprehended for said violation to be Vigorously Prosecuted to the Fullest Extent of The Law!!!

Only by and with ferreting out those that have violated issues of Trust, can we as a society ever hope to retain Our Nation's preeminent Status/Position in The World...
Mr. Williams, I suggest the next time you wish to sing the praises of Senator McCain's military as you did last night, please also include that this former POW now votes for torture bills, says it is okay to torture and we may be doing it for the next 100 year war. Thank you. Back in 2000 I would have respected John McCain's history in Vietnam but not today!!!
