Wisconsin may have played the most crucial role of all in the march to the Democratic nomination. I woke up this morning to find the general election campaign underway. Just now on cable I heard (for the first time personally during this election cycle) a GOP strategist warn voters against "handing over the keys to the Democrats" in terms of terrorism and national security. And Bill Clinton's quote this afternoon makes it so tough to walk back from that standard for his wife, the candidate. It gets more interesting every day, as I note the posts get tougher on this blog.

We hope you can join us for the broadcast tonight.

Hi Brian -

A friend and I were discussing the 'Clintons' and she said -
"I don't want either of them or both of them - we've already lived through one Clinton era and look how that turned out - he was impeached and she got a Senate seat in a state where she had never lived.  Enough"

I agree.

PS - Thanks for mentioning and interviewing Joshua Green yesterday during the 1PM hour - oh how I wish Nightly was an hour like the old days on MSNBC when you would close with tomorrow's newspapers.
Um, Joan, closing with tomorrow's newspapers was CNN and Aaron Brown on NewsNight:)

I think Bill Clinton summed up publically what we all knew privately; this is Hillary's last stand. She might still win, but I tend to doubt that the team that has so badly calculated so far is somehow go0ing to acquire flashes of brilliance and pull it out now.  Whatever happens, David Axelrod is going to be solid gold in the political sphere in Blue Country after this.

Note to Hillary's staff: when you're in trouble, refrain from blatant silliness. You make your candidate look bad, and you hem her in with respect to any future sound bite phrases. Now you're going to have to triple check every single thing she says to make sure you don't get caught in your own trap of whining about "plagiarism". Your goal is to make your candidate look good. Y'all blew it on this one.

Atlantis is home safely, and we might blow up a satellite tonight during a total eclipse of the moon.
Fascinating times we live in!

Looking forward to the broadcast!
Yeah can't wait to see what Leno, SNL and the rest do with Bill Clinton saying "It's all on you" It's going to be sad (and a little funny)  after all this time, hype and money spent if the general election ends up being the lowest turn out in history.  It's been fun watching the democrats prove that everything they've claimed about Republicans is true of them though.
Dear frinds!
From our point of view republican power in usa means
for us war in iraq for petrol deposits civil war with
iraqui people in the near east when i've once heard the scope of defths of american solgers and nationalists of iraq i was frighened occasional they can produce military throw to iran wether they have nuclair power or not but certainly political instability and wave of terrorism in the east
what is the east muslim it is not a democracy its a royoume - kingdom or strong military power i so miss the peace for them new history of aggressive wars under line of struggle for democracy by republicans.
Than aggregation of muslim islam power as in turkey
unforunatly world is coming back to his peaceful future by nationalism.

Best regards to Brian Williams
Brian said that Bill Clinton said" if Hillary doesn't win Texas and Ohio she wont be the nominee" - Later a tape of Bill Clinton was shown where he said " if Hillary wins Texas and Ohio she will be the nominee" -Brian's quote was in error- he should have known better.
Hi Brian,
Reading the blog, it is sad to note the hatred these people have.
I am an independant and have watched the newsmedia literally influence this election. The bias is evident. At this crucial time when our country is at war and we are almost in a recession, the media is responsible for letting the country slide into a mess.
Some of the candidates are given a pass
It is great that the young kids are getting involved but I wish they  realize how serious the matter is.It has become a sport and the media are acting like overgrown kids. This is for you all to read I dont care to appear in tje thread time
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Regarding the broadcast. First of all I feel I must comment on the last report by Mr.Savidge on the border fight between Georgia and Tennessee over the State line being moved in order to get water. The survey done by this man named James Camak(I believe) in 1818 doesn't appear to have been correct according to the findings. The line being moved 1.1 miles north into Chattanooga seems very unfair to the people of Tennessee. I think the residents of Tennessee have a right to be upset because as the woman in the report stated that if she wanted to live in Georgia she would have bought a house in Georgia. This drought situation is really serious and no moving a State line is going to solve it. I think the references to football games being played with regards to a settlement of this arguement sounded very silly. The only REAL SOLUTION is RAIN!! That is what every State in this drought situation needs and in the State of Georgia there has been some rain in the recent weeks. More is coming. Eventually the lakes will return to normal, but it will take some time. In the meantime it is not fair to the people of Tennessee to have their State line moved because of the border fight over water. The survey appears to be incorrect in the first place. I hope this is resolved between the States very quickly. On another note the political battle over votes is always hot. I must say it will be nice when the Presidential Race is down to one person from each party. The debates will certainly be interesting. I will look forward to you and Mr.Russert moderating the debate next Tuesday. Also, the lunar eclipse should be nice to see! Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to all!
To: Laurel-I hope you enjoyed the program about the Alfred I du Pont winners! I'm sure it was great. Especially with Richard!! It is not scheduled yet. I hope I see it soon. I'll keep trying! Keep well always!!
Bill Clinton just raised the bar very high for his own wife. If she loses either state the cable news media and bloggers will run with this statement. I can't see how she will "win" in Texas but I think she may pull out a win in Ohio - a state with known voting (tabulation) issues.
Lynn -
Sorry, but I never saw Aaron Brown on CNN.  However,

I've been watching Brian for a long, long time and starting in July 1996 he had an evening hour long news show on MSNBC from 9-10PM where he would close with 'tomorrow's newspapers'. I believe his producer was Steve Capus, now the President of NBC.

TELEVISION VIEW:  Connected, Yes, but is it a clear Connection?

"Since it started up two weeks ago, MSNBC, the 24-hour cable-news channel owned by NBC and Microsoft, has been trotting out its stars in an endless series of promos...Brian Williams, who is the anchor of a news program at 9 every night, says, "With our prime-time news hour on MSNBC, you can see all the day's stories on your schedule." .......

Though prime-time news isn't exactly radical (CNN even calls its 8 P.M. program "Prime News"), "The News With Brian Williams" is a savvy mix of the top stories and in-depth features. When Williams covered the breaking story of the TWA explosion just three days after MSNBC started, there were a few technical glitches, but the reporting was as fast and as substantial as you would expect from NBC. On a more typical day, the hour included a report on the rash of fires at black churches. (That report offered a good example of how the Internet can add detail. At the MSNBC site, a data base listed every church fire in recent years, categorized by state, denomination and status of investigation.)"

One Clinton was more than enough.  Here's hoping Obama gets the Democratic nomination.  Besides, where's the logic in nominating someone with a 50% dislike, such seems like a desire to lose to me.
The Georgia-Tennessee border issue was an interesting report.  There seems to be a great deal at stake here besides water, as I see it.  I sure hope they have all the borders right down around the Rio Grande and the people on the Rio Bravo side agree they are right before we put a fence down the middle of the Rio Grande.  Sure would hate to spend all that hard-earned taxpayer money on fences only to find out that we are a mile off, or that we are giving up land to "dead space."
In the segment tonight on Bill Clinton's comment about Hillary needing to win Ohio and Texas, it wasn't his comments that I found most interesting.  As he was speaking, a person in the crowd held up a sign that read "Obama speaks good but HIllary speaks well".  I believe that 'speaks good' was in quotes or underlined.  My husband and I both jumped to pause the broadcast to see if we were reading correctly.  I am an English teacher and spend a good amount of time studying our language but I don't think it takes much to see that sign as a clear racial reference.  I was very surprised that it seemed to go unnoticed on the broadcast.  Is this a common sight on the campaign trail?
Hi Brian
I love reading the comments by bloggers about the Clintons. Strange how when Americans need help like the Katrina Storm who do they all not the President but Bill Clinton. Now were are distrusted around the world thanks to the lies told by the current Administration. As Bill Clinton is loved respected and trusted all over the world, I guess he will be asked to step in and help once again. But this is what America has come to be a country where people hate you then turn and ask for help.  As for Hillary this should prove to woman that as we lose more rights we can remember that the only qualified experienced candidate to run for President was knocked out because she is a woman. I look for the Supreme Court to recognize that woman need to be kept in their place as Rev. Huckabee said and stop this education leadership thing. As we watch other countries with female Presidents, maybe we could ask those countries to help the United States with Woman's Rights.

Senator Obama isn't qualified for the top job. But he and his wife did a great job at using Dr. King, Jackie Kennedy and any other trick to get the people to give him their vote.  Mrs. Obama is not anything like Jackie Kennedy. It's all talk with no action.
I told my friend Obama give Hope, Change and no plan which can't buy you a cup of coffee.  But Karl Rove used Religion and fixed voting machines to get Bush in office so Obama's tricks might get him to be the Democratic candidate.  Now if that happens McCain will be the next President of the United States. Even now people are beginning to see through the Obama smoke and mirrors. I guess Obama hopes the American people will be the same as they were in the pass two Presidential Elections, they is believe anything as the candidate stands for nothing.

Looks like President Bush's poll numbers are 19 per cent, if the down fall continues in economy, death of troops and so much more he might leave office with a poll number of zero.

I guess the FDA hires people who don't know their job.  I read about the lives lost because they didn't know the plant that was used would kill. I told you before Brian, US medication would kill you. I did notice how well a country like Cuba does with treating their people. Even Canada doesn't have the problems or expense we do when it come to Health Care. But our Law Makers say we have the best Health Care, reality is Americans are dying from US medication.
I loved the man's accent who closed the show, on the story about the water rights and property line being moved, when he said ~ All of this would become Georgia~  only in the good ole South is this made into 2 syllables:-)
I agree. THe news media has made a mockery of this election in the most powerful time. They are not afraid to be sexist, but heaven forbid they are racist. And heaven forbid they comment on Michelle Obama's lack of class. Which proves even more she is NOT ready to be a first lady or even a lady. First time she is proud? What about when slavery was abolished? Wasn't she proud then? Then maybe she should go back in time and live then. Cause clearly she wants to take us back a million years.

I am saddened that I have to jump party lines. It is shame that the media and Obama have divided this party this way.

The media is obviously on Obama's payroll. He pays lobbyists. He could be a terrorist. And yet, he is going to get the nomination.

I guess McCain will be our next president. Maybe then Michelle Obama will learn to shut her yap.

I doubt NBC posts this. They seem to only post things in favor of Obama.
Can you imagine how tough the Democrats, who've opposed almost every anti-terror thing Bush has produced, wouldn't be on terrorism?  Let me finish by saying that one Clinton was one Clinton too many so, here's hoping Obama gets the Democratic nomination.
Okay Joan, thanks for the trip down memory lane!  Good reporting Joan!  You are a news junkie!
Dear NBC News,

Tonight, it happened. I knew it was coming, and tonight, the tidal wave swept me away.

Yes, I've got a crush on Kelly O'Donnell.

I see that John McCain will be in Indy on Friday... should I bring roses?

xo
I second your hour proposal Joan. Brian did a great show on MSNBC/CNBC. I miss it terribly.

Lynn--I think Brian started the newspapers at the end of the broadcast before Aaron Brown did. Each man did the newspapers a bit differently.

Mr. Williams-
I came across an interesting article while I was reading Gregory Mankiw's blog today. It is about the Finance Minister of British Columbia introducing an escalating carbon tax on most fossil fuels, to promote and encourage the idea of "going green". The revenue from the carbon tax is estimated to reach almost 2 billion, and will go back to the tax payers through personal income tax and business tax cuts.  People will also get a one time check of $100, to help people "think green" in terms of projects around the house, and so forth.  I've also heard Barack Obama, and I'm sure other candidates and politicians, talking about creating "green collar jobs" (Which I guess is what happens when you mix the colors blue and white together). I found it so interesting that the color "Green" is so entrenched in our political process now. I'll be waiting for the next "Green" segment you all do next.
Mr. McCain’s presidential campaign issued the following statement Wednesday night:
“It is a shame that The New York Times has lowered its standards to engage in a hit-and-run smear campaign."

That's the problem most conservatives have with McCain.  It is a shame that McCain thinks The New York Times HAD TO lower its standards to engage in a hit-and-run smear campaign.
People are saying the New York Times has lowered it's standards and engaged in a smear campaign
against John McCain. There's nothing new here. The Times has been doing this "National Enquirer" routine
for years now. It's just not a credible newspaper.
Well I guess Hilary keeps saying that "at the end of the day...the PRESIDENT makes the decisions" in regard to the influence Bill will have on her. We all know darn well that Bill is going to have a profound influence on his wife. Don't kid yourself if you don't think that there's going to be a lot of pillow talk about what she wants to do and Bill is going to put his impeached President hat on and give her the ole' "I've been the President and you should do this" thing. And if she doesn't take his advise? So what happens when your spouse gives you advise and you don't take it? Could get very noisy on the third floor of 1600 Penn. Ave! Nope.. don't want to vote for a dual presidency!
Thank You Sally in LA.  I believe you have hit the nail on the head.
The media can not wait to pick a darling then tear them down. ie Hillary Clinton.  Now Obama's the MAN.  Where are the ideas, the plans?  I have heard about hope, but my question is where is the plan.  Way are the Senator's ideas on Health Care, Education, the Economy.  Where are the plans?????  I went to the MAN's web site and the only thing there on the issues are words.  If Mr. Obama wins my party's nomination, we are not going to be talking about Reagan Democrates were talking McCain Democrates.
I am sick of the media critizing the the so called  negative tone the candidates are expressing.  What are they supposed to do.  If they don't point out the differences between each other, what choice do the voters have?  The media is making a moutain out of a molehill, for ratings I presume. Let the candidates express their view points and then report them honestly.  I, of course,  don't like personal attacks or lying, but so far I have seen none of this so fat
David - if you go to http://www.barackobama.com/index.php, and go to the top toolbar and click on "issues", there is a menu of topics listed. Select one, and then scroll down the page to find the specifics on his proposals.

Joan and Celine - I'm impressed!  I can barely remember who was anchoring 5 years ago let alone the actual segments they did. Interesting to hear that NBC did that segment before CNN.

Carol - I agree with you to a point; they do need to tell us where they differ on issues and how they would approch problems if we're going to determine who we think is the better candidate. But I also agree that attacking people for trivia (like quoting someone else's speeches, campaign financing, etc.) is just bad behavior. There is nothing substantive there at all, IMO. If they truly stick to issues, I'd buy into what they are doing.
To:Lynn G.
Thankyou for the web address.  I have already been there before I just don't see it.  I heard Bill Clinton make a speech in Chesapeake, Va where he outlined his wife's plans.  I had been talking with the woman beside me before the speech and she said to me "It is as if he heard us talking early on these issues"  I laughed and said the Button I bought was bugged.  I am sorry I just can't support Senator Obama
Why do you and the rest of the media not comment or investigate these stories like the one by Ben Smith in Politico about Obama and the Weathermen or his relationship with James Zogby, or the artticle in WorldNetDaily or actually in Newsweek.
Everyone wants to know how he draws crowds. he's probably paving the way for the anti-christ. Has anybody bothered asking him how he intends to pay for these 4000.00 tax credits for 4 yrs. for each college student? Please, you guys just let him slide. The Republicans nnnnand Independents are voting for Obama where they can so he'll win the nomination because they are afraid of Hillary Clinton as is the news media.
Who is Obama?  Where did Obama come from? What has Obama really done for this country?
Is he the Pied Piper of Hamelin and we know what happen to the rats ( could this be the movie stars and the ignorant) and the children (could this be all the young college students). Is he the Messiah like I have seen him refereed to on some TV program’s    (The View).

I want to know is it true that Obama want put his hand over his heart when we say the Pledge or when the US National Anthem is played and that he will not be sworn in with his hand on the Bible but instead on the Quran?  We know this is a fact that Obama’s wife isn’t proud of America although she wealthy, was able to attend college and law school and is able to practice free religions
