Babies that bark

As you can see in my piece Babies That Bark, pet parents are childless pet owners who tend to treat their animals like children. You know the type: they arrange play dates for their dogs, refer to themselves as "Mommy" to the cat, and dress up their puppies. I know pet parents pretty well. Reluctantly I'll admit that I am one. Here are my "kids":

The thing is, you never start out with the intention of becoming a pet parent. As one man I met at a dog birthday party told me, "We're not like crazy dog people or anything." But there he was, at a dog birthday party! It's a change that sneaks up on you. You get an animal, think it's cute, then you kind of start to like it and the next thing you know you're madly in love with a fur ball and breaking out the credit card at Petco. Anything to see them smile (and yes, they do smile).

Both of my babies are rescue animals. They're the greatest little friends I could have hoped for. The good news is there are tons more out there like them, just waiting for a home. Hope, the sweet Chihuahua I used in my piece, is up for adoption.

You can find her and lots of other homeless animals at www.animalhaven.org. C'mon, we pet parents are looking for a few good people to fill the ranks!

Personally, I can't wait to become mommy to a rescued/pound puppy.  One of the main reasons I plan to move this year is to be in a pet friendly apt/home so I can finally have a dog.  My cousin has a gorgeous handicapped Newfoundland who is most definitely her "baby" and she wouldn't have it any other way.

Yesterday I was quite bothered to see the cutest German Sheppard (yes they can be cute) tied up at a parking meter outside my gym.  Being a dog person I had to stop and say hello to him.  Barely petted him and he was on his back wanting a good ol belly rub.  A couple coming out of the gym started to "give me a piece of their mind" about leaving my dog like that.  Whoa, hold on, not my dog, wouldn't do that.  Turns out the dog was there when they had gone into the gym over 90 minutes ealier.  Hate to say he was still there when I left well over an hour later.  Granted it was a mild day, but still it just was not right to leave a dog on cold cement for more than 3 hours with basically nowhere to move around.

My baby will never be treated like that, well once I get him or her later this year.
I am the "pet grandmother" of Mara's two "children" Benjamin, the cat and Sasha, the dog. I love them both, but fortunately, I have three "real" grandchildren, so Mara's two "kids" will not be pampered to the extent in the clip. However, I have grown to love both of them, although I am not by nature an "animal lover."
Can't wait to see the story.  I'm a mama to 2 cats and beta fish, for now.  Have been a mama to guinea pigs, and I also open my home to foster rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters, and maybe more that need come extra TLC while at the shelter.  Unless you're possessed by the same spirit, there is no explaining it to non-animal lovers and supporters.  My family doesn't totally understand, but at least my mom is getting the picture.  At least I'm off the hook now that she's got human grandbabies!

I would LOVE to see more on the shows about pet ownership and those of use who give heart & soul to our step-kids.
As proud rescue parents of (currently 50) discarded felines, and fosters & adopters of more than 350, we know with absolute certainty we are doing good works.  Many of the discards we have or have had are disabled ( we've had semi-blind, totally blind, broken hips, leg problems, crippling respiratory ailments, or just ones thought "ugly") and either tossed out cars, dumped on the roadways or rescued from literally death's door at the shelters.
The unconditional love and companionship is amazing! Even when I have the foulest of days, when I feel like screaming at the world or especially when I am ill or sick, I can count on a purr and a drive-by rub when I get home.
Now if I could just get them to clean their own litter boxes......
My sister is awsome.  I must say though, that little yellow dog is a biter.
