So as per usual I caught up with the mail bag on our blog last night. The good, the bad and the ugly. Almost exactly in that order. I can't believe my pal from Umbro, Maine was talking Patriots trash. Go Giants, Stephanie! Even though I have New England in my blood and have spent the equivalent of years of my life there, I bleed Giant blue.

A fella named Brandon wrote a post to say I was taking the network steadily downhill. (Thanks, other posters -- a few of the items Brandon mentioned in making his case were subjects I was responding to on this blog -- not subjects that had aired on the broadcast!) Then Brandon was, in turn, gently smacked down by members of my army from New England and Minnesota. Hey James Zipadelli: are you any relation to Tony Stewart's crew chief? And while we're on a scattershot tear here, was anyone outraged at the size of the police escort that took Britney Spears to the hospital last night?

Let's get down to business: tonight we have politics covered as usual (interesting debate last night, and another one tonight), the National Guard, China, health, and the UN's newest envoy for peace as profiled by Ann Curry. We hope you'll join us.

Good Evening Mr.William, First of all I like NBC Nightly News and have only watched this newtwork for evening news. Mr.Williams, I think you do a fine job every evening broadcasting the news events of the day. You are not taking the network downhill at all! I enjoyed Mr.Brokaw and I enjoy your broadcast too. Now with regards to the New York Giants I am not an avid football viewer, but I will watch the Super Bowl. I guess for the sake of the New England Patriots winning every game they should win the Super Bowl. But for your sake I kind of hope the New York Giants win because they gave them a good fight the last time they played them and could really have a chance at this game. So for your sake it would be great if they won. I know not everyone thinks the same way, but that is just my opinion. I will look forward to the broadcast this evening. Peace to all!
Hi Brian -

Guess I was wrong when I thought we had seen the last of Rudy and there he was with Arnie and McCain.

Looks kind of out of place.

Doesn't he realize that he should never leave the boundaries of the five boroughs???  His persona doesn't play well on the other side of the Hudson.

You are in the Giants side of the state - up here in Cheshire, it's best to be undecided  - there are rabid fans from both sides here.

Oh, and that's enough of Brittney Spears for a while, next thing I know you will be mentioning Paris, Jessica the Olson twins and Tom Cruise. Be careful  :)

Mr Williams -

I watched McCain's victory speech in Florida and I wondered how he was giving it without a teleprompter - and I kept looking and looking for the teleprompter.  I certainly did notice his constant gaze straight ahead and I was confused by it.  Now that I read your blog from yesterday I finally understand.   What I do not understand is why the coverage of the election night speeches on MSNBC does not provide us with this information right away and VERY CLEARLY, especially since many pundits and MSNBC announcers give immediate comparisons of the different candidate's speeches each primary night.  It is just not fair reporting to have us viewers be impressed with a speech while ignorant of a teleprompter and a carefully prepared and professionally written text.

I had similarly strained my eyes during the Obaama Iowa and New Hampshire speeches to look for a teleprompter.  The teleprompter screens he uses  are very small and very hard to see against the backdrop of all the standing supporters and given the close-up TV coverage through out the speech.  I never could see one in Iowa but then I fianlly got a glimpse of one in New Hampshire immediately after the end of the speech when the camera moved the view out to the sides of the podium for just a moment.  I know you have said you did mention a teleprompter usage by Obama in Iowa while you were on MSNBC that night but somehow I did not hear you say it and certainly no one repeated your observation that night.

Would you please advise if Obama's Iowa speech was the first time ever that a candidate used a teleprompter for a primary night victory or concession speech?  If I am correct that this is unprecendented then that is all the more reason to advise television viewers who would have no reason to expect this and the highly polished and rehearsed performance which results.

Thanks for explaining how McCain did it and please encourage MSNBC folks to stress the use or non use of teleprompters right after each speech, especially since the use of them on primary nights is at least unexpected by those of us who have watched many such speeches every four years.
Brian, I never said YOU were bringing the network down. I said Andrea Mitchell was. I will continue to blog until she is off the air. She has no right to be covering the democratic party. I have said for years she is hardly a journalist, rather a sensationlist news person. I cannot believe you allow her to broadcast her views on the democrats.

She is a huge disgrace.
First of all, I think that you do a wonderful job reporting the news, however, your producers decision to air the "readiness of our National Guard" is simply negligent and only serves to encourage terrorists to act upon the weaknesses the people of the United States.
I'm a big fan Brian but your report missed the point on Detroit's mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, and his apology. We the taxpayers don't care if he cheats on his wife -- but his coverup led directly to a $9 million settlement with whistle-blower cops, and he also committed perjury. THAT is the story!
Tonight's report concerning the readiness level of our National Guard troops was nothing less than an invitation to terrorist to attack us.  While I agree that the public has a right to know about certain aspects of our government's preparedness levels, advertising our weaknesses to the world at large can only harm us.  My outrage at the facts of the story will certainly be directed to my elected representatives and will be a good topic for discussion and debate for my high school homeland security students tomorrow!
Brian, I want you to know that you are my favorite Anchor person and I look forward to you every night. But PLEASE get a new Tie Wardrobe.  Those bright stripes and large designs draw your audiance's attention RIGHT to the tie of the night and distracts from your handsome face and your reporting.  Why don't you take a poll from your viewers to see what we all think.  The ties that are most attractive without drawing attention away from you yourself are the ones with tiny print that look like that are a solid color from the distance.

I don't care HOW MANY songs you download...it is your own business.

I was hoping tonight you wouldn't have a striped tie again but there it was calling my eyes off your face and to the tie!!!

Love you even if I am an old lady!

Good Evening Mr.Williams, I am so sorry I left off the "s" on your name in my greeting on my first post. I was typing too fast. And also my spelling of "network", again I am sorry and feel silly for not spelling your last name and the word "network" correctly. I will try to be careful in checking my posting. Now on to the broadcast. The report from the Pentagon regarding the National Guard and Reserves not being ready to handle an attack on the United States was disturbing news although with the current deployments of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan it is not surprising. The percentage of 88% not being ready and equipt enough was very high. But these brave men and women have been stretched to their utmost limit and the Pentagon needs to give them increased funding and equipment if they expect them to be able to handle such a horrible event. They need to fix it as soon as possible. With regards to the report by Dr.Nancy Snyderman concerning folic acid and how important is is for women to take this vitamin prior pregnancy was very important news. Anything that will prevent birth defects in babies and help them to be born healthy is wonderful news. The percentage given of 50% to 70% was large and certainly taking folic acid will make a difference. Now on the subject of health risks of a cardiac event while watching a sporting event. All I can say is that it is just a game. Keep calm Mr.Williams and don't over exert yourself getting excited watching the New York Giants. Remember you have a long and busy Super Tuesday broadcast with limited commercials plus being on MSNBC. It will be a long day and night. We need you! Finally, the report from Ann Curry on George Clooney and his work at being a peace envoy was very interesting and shows he is genuinely concerned about this situation in Darfur and other peace missions. It is unfortunate he was unable to give his speech today, but I'm sure he will soon. Very full broadcast as usual with alot of good reports. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Keep up the great work! Peace to all!
(PS: If I did not spell something correctly I'm sorry.)
good evening brian.  I know everyone is focused on the race for the white house, but while eating dinner with my family and watching nightly news, I couldn't help but notice during the piece on folic acid that the one happy new mother interviewed was bottle feeding her newborn baby.
I know every woman has the right to feed her child however she may choose. I feel that if health professionals are going to advocate breastfeeding and try what they can to help woman make the decision to breastfeed that our media should portray feeding your baby in the same manner. I'm not at all saying that you or the people responsible for the piece are wrong, but only that your program should not seemingly advocate one or the other (breastfeeding or no) especially when you are talking about the health of an unborn child or newborn baby.
Wow.  Trash talk?  I would never!  My mother always did tell me when I was younger that I don't think before I speak. You're fortunate, though, that I'm not a rabid fan!  I'll save my ribbing for Monday.  Truly Brian - if the Pats weren't playing, I'd be cheering for the Giants.  Usually I cheer for the underdogs in the big game.  :)

Serious stuff though... Brittney who?  I'd have mental issues too if I had to put up with all of that crap day in and day out!  Thank you for not mentioning her on the broadcast.

Does it really matter if candidates use teleprompters?  I think the irony here is that I have yet to meet a candidate who didn't sound scripted, so why wouldn't they use a prompter?  Can't be any different than having speech writers!
Mr. Williams,
In response to the story tonight on the importance of Folic Acid for women of childbearing years, I have this to say---Why is a woman who is so concerned about folic acid while pregnant is feeding her 3 day old infant a bottle of formula on national television?? What about the nutritive colostrum the little baby was missing out on? What about informing America about the benefits of breastfeeding for the first year of life and beyond? Good health for the baby does not stop once they have left the mother's womb and entered the world. This seemed to be such a confusing image for me, a nursing mother of a 14 month old, that a mother is so concerned about folic acid but not about what she feeds her child. Please consider doing a story on the benefits of breastfeeding in an effort to promote nature's best for all of our babies in America. Sincerely, Angie Nolle
Hi Brian I'm at the LA Debate but I taped your show.
I just got lucky and couldn't pass up this chance to see Hillary and Obama in person.  I'll watch the tape of your show when I get back home.  You know I'll have alot to say.
I have been unable to read Daily Nightly since I injured by back on November 11, hurrying to move some large boxes of fabric in time to watch the NASCAR race -- which, by the way I missed because I injured my back ... and I just wanted to say that I have really missed reading your daily blogs, Brian, even more than I ever thought I would.  By the middle of December, I was able to sit still long enough to watch the Nightly News, and couldn't help but feel sorry for myself because I wasn't able to read your blogs, wondering what details about the day's news I was missing that weren't covered during the broadcasts; and, I most certainly missed reading your daily tidbits and stories about yourself and your surroundings that you always share here on this blog.   Now that I'm able to sit at my computer comfortably for longer periods of time, I guess I'll have to start reading the archives.

But, first, I'll have to add my "Goooooo Giants !!!"  Because, even though I continue to be a tried and true Saint's fan no matter how bad it gets, I'll most certainly be rooting for that quarterback from Ole Miss.  (Okay, I'll give a shout out to the Patriots for Stephanie, since I enjoy reading her posts and "listening" to her opinions.)

Second and third ... I've said it before, and will say it again -- Brian is quite the snappy dresser, and I love his ties (my personal favorite is the one that comes across as "periwinkle" blue on my television screen).  And, here's to hoping the number of tunes on your IPod continue to grow ... I'll bet you have quite an eclectic variety; but, WHAT?  No classical music?  There's nothing better than the 1812 Overture to help hurry along those dull and boring house-cleaning chores, IMHO.

Third ... I dropped by a yarn shop today looking for new and interesting yarns to use as hair for my Raggedy Annies, and paused to check out the bamboo yarns.  They really are sooooooo soft!!!  Yarn is also being made out of soy, as well, which was also just as soft as the bamboo yarns.  I couldn't resist buying a few skeins of both the bamboo and soy yarns.  I've never had the urge to learn how to knit before, but I believe I'll have to learn enough to knit a throw with these new-found yarns, and I can hardly wait to see how these yarns will do as Raggedy Annie hair!!

Fourth ... I think politics is excruciatingly boring, but I find myself enjoying watching Brian and Tim when they are together discussing politics.  The sheer joy they share about anything political captures even my attention, and maybe I'll even learn something because I'm captivated by their enthusiasm.  It is just so obvious that Brian and Tim are just the greatest of friends.  And, how wonderful it is to see Mr. Brokaw doing some reporting.  I'm glad that he has continued to share his interviewing and reporting prowess with us during his "semi" retirement.

And, last but most certainly not least -- Ann Curry's reporting this evening was "top shelf", as always !
You are about perfect in my book , Brian.  The biggest compliment I can give you is that you are pretty Midwestern--for an Eastern fella.  Must have been that start in Joplin.  Don't let them get you down.
Dear Mr. Williams,
Your nightly newscast is, I believe, the best of the evening news programs.  I was greatly disappointed this evening (Jan 31st) when, during the newscast, the number of delegates listed for candidates reflected only delegates for McCain and Romney.  That is not correct.  Ron Paul has delegates and through the Florida primary had more delegates than Rudy Guiliani before he dropped out.  In fact, all the media have marginalized Ron Paul's campaign.  A study published by Eric Veblen in 1975 showed a positive relationship between media reports and the ratings of politicians during elections.  The study shows media stories, not endorsements, have significant impact.  Thus, when the media continue to ignore Ron Paul in reports and do not list him in press reports at all, it detracts from his support.  This seems intentional.  What the media does not understand is the unknown support for Mr. Paul.  That support would significantly increase if the media did not continue to leave him out of your reports as you did tonight.  I would hope you, and your cohorts, would be more circumspect in your reporting.  Thank you.
The Debate between Hillary and Obama was great. It was like watching two friends share their different but similar views.  It had some comedy and the MC tried hard to get these two to argue but they wouldn't allow it.  They both stayed focused on the issues.  Unlike the GOP when Mitt and McCain were arguing like they were in a school yard and Ron Paul acting like the Adult who had to tell them to stop.
The crowd was so big and all the Stars were out. I must say after seeing and hearing the Debate live, either Hillary or Obama would be great but together their unstoppable.

Out here in California we are really hurting for our National Guard, as they are always available for the fires we have.  Now with so many soldiers lives gone and our National Guard either in Iraq or on the Boarder we're in trouble.

"Once Upon A Time In The West" or Look Before You Leap
While, generally, we had about 50% of 30-year average rainfall last season; we are having what appears to be a wet year this season. My guess is that the average of this year and last year will be very near "NORMAL" (the 30-year average). You are right, we need more dams to cover these normal variations. (There is an overture in this.)
Jerry Brown stopped the construction of a dam on the American River (The Auburn Dam) during the 70's and no Governor since has possessed the genitilia to finish it. There was threat of flooding in Sacramento this year as a result.
We are in the Modern Warmig Period. This started about 1850 and is predicted to end about 2012. A period of glaciation is predicted to follow. In my lifetime I have heard the Neonuts circa 1970 propose sprinking black stuff on the polar ice caps to halt the decline of sea level and I have heard the current neonuts panic about global warming. Geophysicists and people that actually study these phenomena are most worried about the next period of glaciation. The little ice age took out 1/2 of the occidental population. We know that sun spots and Aurora went away. I conclude that solar output decreased.
Brian,
I am a channel surfer with news, especially with the presidential campaign, occasionally catching reruns late at night to catch as much commentary as possible. but I am distressed the one of the greatest challenges we face is being ignored by politicians and pundits alike.

With the aging of our population, and retiring of large numbers of nurses, as us baby-boomers enter the post-retirement age group, we already have a sever nursing shortage which will continue to worsen as more of us retire. Already we are short almost 4,000  nursing instructors to create our replacements, with 166,000 qualified nursing school applicants turned away last year.  Add the decreased staffing mandated by managed care, we are losing many qualified nurses to burnout and frustration of being unable to provide quality care, especially in our nursing homes where healthcare reimbursement is based on 1987 legislation.

Both political sides of the U.S. House and Senate have refused to pass financing in the finance committes for the Nurse Reinvestment Act of 2002, which could have helped with our predicted shortage of 2.000.000 nurses by 2020.

That no pundit or presidential candidate has addressed the worsening "Perfect Storm" in our Healthcare System, is tragic. and now, with the possibility of Universal Healthcare entitlement on the horizon, where are we going to get the Registered Nurses and Advanced Practice Nurses to meet our country's need for Health Promotion and Prevention and for Primary Care.

It takes years to train the nurses we need, we need to act yesterday. The silence in this campaign and in network news is deafening.
Bethanie, I disagree with your charge of negligence. The TV report didn't provide any information about specific weaknesses at specific locations, so there's no way that the report could be used by those wishing to do us harm. Regardless, wouldn't you rather that we know in advance of the Guard's weaknesses (so we can fix them) in contrast to learning about them before a large domestic mobilization of the Guard is needed? Your disappointment would best be used as a motivation to encourage your elected officials to increase support for the Guard.
I think you just might have opened the floodgates for people responding to your posts.  I admire the courage in being so vocal (or as vocal as you could possibly be, given the medium). On some side notes, I have this idea that if you weren't a head writer for NBC news, you would be a head writer for any of the major TV stations anyway, for sitcoms! For some reason, reading your references to Britney Spears and Nascar crew chiefs makes me laugh. I hope no physical illnesses arise in your house as a result of the super bowl activities. Quick question though; What are you more interested in, the Super bowl, or Super Tuesday? Answer that and stay fashionable!

Your biggest fan,

Matt

 Mr Williams,
Your broadcast last night was excellent. Yes, the police escort for Ms. Spears was ridiculous!
I do agree that the meida's coverage on Ron Paul has been lacking, but at this point, I don't see that media will do him much good. I guess we will know for sure after Tuesday!
By the way, I like your tie wardrobe. :)

                  Always watching,

National Guard not ready? Makes me glad I don't live in some big Liberal city full of conspiracy nuts, people who look down on others with contempt and up with envy, or feel like they are entitled to a risk free life. Also helps if your prepared to hunker down and defend your family until order is restored. Other than that I think I still have one of those old wooden school desk that protected us from nukes during the cold war. :-)
Mr. Williams,

I am at a loss to understand why you have allowed Keith Olbermann to chair primary coverage and debate follow ups. Hosting Countdown is not an issue as viewers are not expecting objectivity.

To have him involved in any other news reporting where viewers expect to see objectivity brings down the entire NBC News organization.

I cringe each time I see him interact with true professionals such as yourself, Tim Russert and David Gregory to name a few.

I don't believe I am alone in this perspective and for the sake of the credibilty of NBC you would limit him to his show.

Sincerely,

Mike
Dear Mr. Williams:
I had tuned to NBC News on Friday September 9, 2005 when you were covering New Orleans. I thought I would mention that as you were broadcasting live, local emergency authorities and law enforcement were learing and working right along with your program.

Second, good news though. One person that was learning and working the same evening got the pink slip from his boss. Police Chief Bret Evans got the word from his Internal Affairs officer Lt. Bobby Brantley and terminated Larry Douglas. It was the last night I saw him in uniform on September 9, 2008. I validated his termination by getting a confirmation from City Attorney Jim Elliot Monday January 14, 2008.

But, what did they learn? Well, police knew just what to do to save some lives on Wednesday Janaury 16, 2008, Don Edwards had to take the position and fire his M-16 on an escaping robber trying to shoot his way to the get away car. The robber was just paroled less than a year ago on February 5, 2007. I emailed the Govenror yesterday about the approval of guidlines by Police Chief Evans.

So, I suppose nobody knows what is coming on Valentines Day. Will their be greeting cards?

Sincerely Yours,
James Erdmanczyk

Brian,

Don't let those New Englanders push you around (it's fairly pompous for them to call themselves "Patriots" anyway! And while we're at it, to represent an entire region.)  You should strike back and write some New York Giants haikus.  Come to http://haikugiant.blogspot.com and show them what bleeding Big Blue looks like!

Go Giants!

Crisp, accurate throws.
A Manning among small boys.
One more win to go!
I am deeply dissappointed that you and the rest of the mainstream media continues to ignore and marginalize RON PAUL and his bid for president.....If you would just interview him for a short while, you would find he is the only canidate who cares about and revers our U.S> Constitution...go to ronpaul2008.com and see for your self and then have him on your show. Thank you

Thanks for your excellent reporting but please,  no more Brittany.  Our world has much more to worry about than her at this point.   It scares me to think she is a role model for our youth.

Hello Brian,
I think you are doing a great job and I watch you on a regular basis. I have a request. If you get the opportunity to interview Obama, would you please ask him about Rev. Wright? Also ask him about his heritage and the fact that he doesn't place his hand over his heart when the pledge is being said. I have read a lot of articles about the Rev. Wright and what his church beleives, but I have yet to see anybody question Obama on his beliefs as far as the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. I know that Obama has "sort of" explained not wearing the flag pin but not the pledge thing. I can't beleive Americans could be for anybody who doesn't respect the country.
Hi Brian,

Yes, Greg is a cousin of mine -- I have the family tree to prove it. I've never met him so I can't help you out with NASCAR tickets. Sorry. But here's my online portfolio if you're interested.
