Life on the trail

By Mark Hudspeth, NBC News producer

Editor's note: Mark Hudspeth is on the campaign trail with NBC's Lee Cowan, whose report on how the candidates keep going... and going... and going airs tonight on the broadcast.

I certainly wasn't the first person who had found himself sitting in church on a Sunday morning regretting a long night in Vegas. But even so, last Sunday seemed strangely unique.

I was unsuccessfully trying not to yawn, crammed in a small section of the balcony of Ebenezer Baptist Church with several dozen sleep-deprived journalists and Barack Obama campaign press aides. Most of us had spent nearly every waking hour of our 18-to-22 hour days together for more than three weeks, and had rushed to catch an overnight press charter just hours after the finding out the results of the Nevada Caucus. It was the only way to get to Atlanta in time to see Obama address the home church of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the eve of the holiday created in King's honor.

It seems like such a long time ago. I can't believe it hasn't even been a week. Lee Cowan and I have been on the road covering the Obama campaign since Christmas Day. We were on and off the trail sporadically for a few weeks before that and there are quite a few who have been out longer than that. And as the campaign reaches fever pitch leading up to the February 5th contests, it's not just the candidates, but those of us who follow their every move, who are slowly starting to realize that the frenetic pace we've been keeping is nowhere near finished. And like them we have to dig deep to keep going.

I don't know why I didn't go right to sleep on that flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta. It would have been such a nice long stretch of the REM sleep that's been in such short supply lately. That's actually not true. I do know why: a plane full of reporters covering the same story, all of whom just made both a deadline and a flight by the skin of their teeth can be a pretty lively group. We spent most of the flight chattering about the nuances of the delegate/popular vote split, speculating about whether it had been a mistake for Obama to go home to Chicago rather than stay and react to the results (maybe we were just jealous that he was doing what we all wanted to do), and commiserating about the challenges of working for East Coast news organizations while out west (my alarm to get up and do the Today Show that morning had gone off at 2a.m.).

Most of us in the balcony last Sunday had been on a similar flight to New Hampshire just hours after Obama delivered his victory speech the night of the Iowa Caucus, and will probably do it again a few hours after the polls close in South Carolina this Saturday-–regardless of the outcome.

Days on the trail seem eerily similar, yet all are different. From state to state and city to city, the candidate's speeches -- much like the floral pattern on the buses that carry us from event to event -- are mostly the same. From the early morning bag call to late night events timed for the 11p.m. local news, our day becomes mostly a search for those small departures from that sameness that become the day's news. That and the AC power we need to charge the laptops, Blackberrys, cell phones, and cameras we use to tell those stories.

Sometimes the campaign does what it can to help us fight the inevitable fatigue, like usually they have Red Bull energy drink on the bus. But sometimes they don't, like today when they scheduled a roundtable with voters right after a conference call on economic policy.

But the fatigue is always short lived, because soon enough one of those small departures hits you like cold water in the face and it's like a whole new day. And there's going to be a lot of new days before this race is settled. And until then I have no intention of missing any of them.

Billy & Hillary Clinton sold their soul 35 years ago. The 35 years experience she talks so often about , is the experience of her patron saint The Devil , We should check her head with out doubt she has the 666 branded. Obama supporters do not be upset , The fires are hell are just getting heated as it prepares for Hillary. !!!!
There you go again...
The media is so wrapped up in everything Obama. How about on the road with Edwards or Clinton. The media is trying to shape the election in favor of Obama. It is so apparent in the "fluffy" atricles and stories about him, and all the critical stories about any of the other candidates. Wake up people, just becasue he is a great speaker does not mean he will be a good president!
Keep going Barack. An interesting study I have conducted: 0% of Clinton supporters have actually read any of Obama's plans for America or any of his website material. Those who have studied Obama invariably vote Obama. Obama: a genius who actually cares about the state of the USA and the world more than his wallet or his legacy. We may never get another chance like this to take back our government people. If you are voting for someone else, please do your research first. That's all I ask.
It is refreshing to have news from the Obama campaign. I was starting to think that the only ones running were Hillary, Bill and their daughter.

Keep on moving Senator Obama! You are our voice and change for tomorrow. I am a baby boomer and I have come to realize it is time for this change now! The Clinton's or old school it is time for the new school to get started.

After having studied both Obama and Clinton, listening to speeches, watching debates, reading articles and blogs, going over the plans for America on their websites, the choice is really quite simple. Clinton is not presidential and has very little, if any, integrity. Obama, on the other hand, feels like the authentic leader with great ideas and excellent credentials. He comes across as honest, level headed and wise. No wonder smear campaigns may seem like the only chance to beat him. Obama has no real rival, now the only question is: will the American people fall for the lies or will they recognize the great opportunity at hand and take it.
To Mary in Petaluma - Please don't listen to what the media says about Obama.  Read his books, find out what his positions are on issues that matter to you and your fellow Americans.  I don't think Obama would be a good president, I think he would be a GREAT president. This man is smart and we are lucky to see such a person come along once in a generation.  Let's not miss the best opportunity this country has seen in a long time.  He is the one.  Obama.
My highest admiration for Barack.
This is THE CHANCE for the United Stated States of America to make History.
A man with such intelligence, Charisma, Instinc for the right and for most the sense to unify.
He will have an easy job to unite us all. Because the issues aren't ideas, but more how to create a viable majority to get things moving. He has that special ability and gift we must say.
As far as the Clinton's are concerned, it is really time for them to step back. They are just playing back games with the lifes of millions. This is evil to post a radio AD after Barack has explained on national TV what he meant. This is how we see that the Clinton's have hunger hearts for senseless power and very bad intentions. How can people like the Clinton be trusted at all. I think they are also behind the dirsty and false claims of Barack being a muslin.
GO Barack. No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn (Isaiah 54:17). In the Name of JESUS Amen!
I wish I were with the reporters so I could see Obama in person.  Having seen some of Obama's speeches on TV, I imagine that it must be pretty intense being there in person!  It reminds me of a story I read many years ago about a speech by Abraham Lincoln when he was running for president (or maybe his party's nomination -- hard to believe how much the Republican Party has changed!).  There were one or two reporters in the audience (can't remember the exact details), and it seems that one of them made it a few minutes into the speech taking short hand, but was so moved he stopped transcribing so he could experience the moment by just listening and absorbing.  That I suspect is what the experience is in person with Obama!  And it's not just words, it's about the spirit of the man, one who contains a lot of truth, and that is what inspires.
I am relieved to learn of Dennis Kucinich's decision to back Obama.  He's young, intelligent, and sincere.  Our country needs a caring person in office.
I am a Jamaican and have been watching the campaign very keenly.  My opinion so far is that Senator Barack Obama would make a great President. He is really intelligent. His speeches are always outstanding and he answers his question in a manner that holds your attenion.  He deals with the issues via questions being posed by giving well structured answers.  He will be able to represent America on the international scene.  Frankly, I am not quite impressed with Mrs. Hillary Clinton speeches. She also needs to be able to gain the support of the people more decisively and not continue to have her husband tagging along everywhere she goes. America need a change in policy decisions and certainly does not needs another whimp or lacky who only shows arrogance and not able to address critical issues concerning the growth and stability of the economy.
People are talking about Obama defending himself and his record.  What else is he supposed to do?  I want Obama to help individuald remember how he can unite the country.  If Hillary is elected, the country will be more divided then it is now.  She does not want to unite, she wants to divide.  It is mighty funny that one day she is crying in New Hampshire and now she is really showing her true colors.  I wish that people will wake up and see this scam for what it really is.  I want to elect someone who can work with both parties and get things done and now work with a person that likes to fight and put people down.  Obama is refreshing and I hope that he lets his light shine through and it is very good to hear something positive about Obama.  He needs to help people remember that he is not running as a black candidate but a candidate for the president of the UNITED states.  No race involve.  Obama continue to give your message because I guarantee that American can see threw what the Clintons are doing and will vote to move our country forward.
I wish America understood how important these elections are for the world.  Something needs to be changed.  America has become the world's bully instead of the beacon of hope it has always been.  Where is the joy now? Coming together is not just an empty word.  There are moments in history when the active majority wakes up and speaks.  Is that moment now?  I'm skeptical but hopeful at the same time.  Too many things to overcome, too much baggage from the years past? Or will America show its greatness to the world once again?
Barack Obama is the only candidate that inspires me with the hope that this country can be great again. I believe Obama is the best candidate,Democrat or Republican, to lead this nation.
I thank all the people who have had positive commend on Obama. You are great thinkers, visionaries and God led. This is the only good opportunity for Americans to vote for a president who has the countries interest in heart.Voting for for the super rich is mentainig the status rich levels in the white house and it will not work for most people, please think and go cast your vote wisely. Many rich poeple will shoe their concern when voting times come!
My best wish for 2008 is that America does not fall into the trap of the Clintons. After the bush years with a lot of "experienced" cabinet members (Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld,...), the worse that could happen to America is to have the Clintons- They are different from the Bushies only by name- They have the same tactics, the same culture that consists of giving favors to a small club of "loyalists" instead of taking care of the masses.
There is an e-mail going around with seirous questions about Obama such went to Muslim schools in Indonesia except for two years in a Catholic School. Obama says he joined the United Church of Christ when he was in his twenties.  What was he before that.

When is the media going to check out the facts and either prove the rumors false or true?
Mr Obama I want you to know that you are the best thing that has or will happen to this Country.Don't
worry about the Clitons, because they know they can
not win over you. They will try to use all kinds of
tricks to get upset, but they wil not suceed.God Bless.

Obama is all "fluff".  His would be a failed presidency.  It is obvious that the media favors Obama, but they are making a mistake.  They just can't bring themselves to critize him, but they can't say enough nasty stuff about Hilliary and Bill.  Well, Obama, when I heard your comments about the Republicans I thought you were praising them.  Now you lie about it!  I don't want you as president or vice-president.  We need Hilliary who knows what she is doing.
I am wondering if Mr Obama is a natural born citizen of our country.Does anyone know?
I am all for Senator Obama. At first I was just curious because he is a black man. But I did my research. I listened to him, Hillary, Edwards ( I like Edwards too). I wanted to see what everyone had to say before I made a decision. Obama seemed to be the most trustworthy and straight-forward to me. He doesnt seem to be so into lining his pockets. It is my opinion that he really cares about the direction this country is going and wants to put it back on track. I am all for Obama and the Right kind of change. OBAMA '08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obama is a movement lets be honest there are those who are wont support him because he is not like the jesse jackson and rev sharpton he is a different kind of leader and that is what the United States needs we ought to be tired of doing the same ole things  Wake up its time for us to see that there is a movement to move this country whites and blacks hispanics women and men and realize the same concerns for life and the pursuit of happiness is all of ours Obama has the right Idea we must work to get there without dividing the nation
"OBAMA", IT IS A REVOLUTION TAKING PLACE. IF YOU CAN NOT BECOME THE PART OF IT THAN PLEASE DO NOT STOP IT EITHER.
Obama will be a great President. If we learn from our mistakes and ignorance in the past this could be a huge Victory for the country. I often wonder how Abraham Lincoln, John F Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King's leadership (if given the chance) would have transformed America had they not been taken from us so early in life. Obama's spirit of leadership seems to compliment that of these great leaders and I pray we, as a nation, as a Country give this young man a chance to transform this country in "LIFE". Im begging "The Ignorant Americans" not to take this great leader from us. I know they are conjuring up methods now to get him out of the race but I pray to God they don't succeed. I am backing Barak Obama. Hillary seems to be the Democrat of choice and if I had to vote Republican, I would vote McCain but my heart is with Obama:)
Go Obama.

We need to stop this roller coaster of Bush, followed by Clinton, Clinton, Bush, and Bush.
Is there a pattern here?

I THINK AMERICA HAS GOT A CHANCE TO TAKE A DIFFRENT APPROCH AND THAT WOULD BE BARRACK OBAMA.PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE YOU MADE IN 2004 ,AND GET OBAMA ELECTED.
The Obama campaign has quite a few bloggers atting their candidate with no experience, only oratory, here doesn't it? Truthfully, and you all know it...the one most Presidential, the one that is the smartest, seasoned, ready...is HILLARY CLINTON...the news media loves to feed on anything but her positions and policies...read em, listen to her...you will come to the conclusion that she is the best for the job...HILLARY IS THE NEXT PRESIDENT>...the BEST...DEAL WITH IT, Sexist People.
So tired of seeing all day that this is coming down to racial or gender votes. Here is one 53 year old white, Irish Catholic woman, mother of 5, life long Democrat, Bill Clinton supporter who is working and voting for Obama!
To Lea in Seattle,
I have read his books and I was a strong supporter until I learned that when in the Il. Senate and the current Senate, he has not stood on one politically contrversial issue, but instead of voting "yes" or "no", has voted "present". Don't you think a great president should take a stand and ACT not speak or be present?
These comments could rot up and blow away before the comment is posted...please get a move on...the election will be over before you get any of these comments up.
It is so depressing to see Hill and Bill march to the white house; together. If they werent so vicious, i might support them objectively if they won. If they win, I will need to be convinced they will actualy benefit the country. If they win, they will have alienated a large measure of democrats, leaving the door open for republicans again.
My wife and I have been voting since John F Kennedy was elected president.  Not since Bobby Kennedy have we seen such a vibrant, brilliant, and inspirational candidate as Barack Obama.

The Clinton's are playing Karl Rove politics with him.  We should vote them into the sunset.  They've had their day.  Personally, I don't want them after the last two weeks.  I'll vote Republican if I have to!
Why is it never mentioned that Obama has an African father, not Amerikan. His fathers other siblings alo live in Afrika. His mother is white American,, but one never sees her in any campaign.Obama was raised in the Moslem faith, and lived in Indonesia till he was seven. Not exactly the "All American" boy who faithems to be president as he grows up.
I fell slightly uncomfortable, but who knows, am I the only Amerikan who feels concerned?
In its half-hearted endorsement of Obama, "The Las Vegas Review-Journal" wrote: "His policy recommendations -- when he can be convinced to get any more specific than 'I represent change' -- are the opposite of 'change.' They're old-line, welfare-state solutions that haven't spent enough time in the microwave to appear even superficially appetizing."

Indeed, it is no easy task to get beyond the aura of political “messiah” and the prep-rally hype to determine what exactly his positions are.  But a closer look reveals, amongst other things, that he proposes to link the minimum wage to inflation.  Such a policy was known in Italy as the “scala mobile”.  It institutionalized inflation and was abandoned.  Among the few political parties that would like to reintroduce it is the Communist Party.

The attraction for many in Obama is his desire to unite the country, but with similar economic positions, I find it hard to believe that Obama will be able to bring people together and get any Republican or even moderate Democrats to converge on his ideas.
DK has NOT endorsed anyone.....not even your beloved OBAMA!!!
Dennis Kicinich has not endorsed anyone in the primary and has said so....so no he did not endorse OBAMA!!!!
Yes i have read both Obama and Clintons policies. What is the difference? Not much. Obama is not right for the country right now. I have read his history have you bother to read Hillarys? She has done so much for so many and because she is a woman she is demonized. Hell has no fury like a woman so get ready. Go Hillary Go!!!!!!!!!!!
Obama speeches remind me of JFK speeches.I believe Obama will be a GREAT president to complete the unfinished work of JFK and take America to another level unimagined.
FACT CHECK THE ACTUAL WORDS SPOKEN IN THE DEBATE BY OBAMA REGARDING PRESIDENT REAGAN.  OBAMA WAS POINTING OUT THAT R.R. HAD PUT FORTH NEW IDEAS. HE DID NOT PRAISE THE IDEAS BUT WAS TRYING TO MAKE A CASE FOR THE NEED FOR NEW IDEAS.  NOTE HOW THE CLINTONS ALTERED THE MEANING OF WHAT OBAMA ACTUALLY DID SAY.

INTELLECTUAL DISHONESTY FOR POLITICAL GAIN IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND IS VERY MUCH BENEATH THE DIGNITY AAND INTELLIGENECE I WOULD HAVE EXPPECTED OF MS. CLINTON.

REGARDING OBAMA VOTING  "PRESENT" IN THE ILLINOIS SENATE, I READ THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENT MEANING THAN THE APPARENT ONE, BUT THIS NEEDS CORROBORATION. I BELIEVE IT DOES NOT MEAN "ABSTAIN."  CAN SOMEONE COMMENT WHO KNOWS?
BUSH, CLINTON,CLINTON,BUSH,BUSH. AMERICA WAKE UP THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT, WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER CLINTON WISKY.
I agree with Jesse in Denver. Anyone who reads about each candidate and who votes thoughtfully for the best candidate will invariably vote for Obama. As a nation we have a golden opportunity here; we could have a truly great President. The Clintons are dishonest and corrupt. Haven't we had ENOUGH Bushes and Clintons!? Win, Obama, please, win for all of us!
Mary from Petaluma.  Please do your research. This misinformation thing is getting old.  In Illinois legislature it is completely NORMAL and accepted to vote this way.  It has been said Ad-Nauseam that the present vote is essentially a "maybe" vote, meaning that Barack (or anyone else voting "present" ) did so because although the overall intent of a particular bill seemed decent, there were other things within its structuring that needed to be rectified.  This is why Barack (any others) vote "maybe".  Barack refuses to help pass a bill that is not 100% sound in its structure.   Although I am still split between Barack and Edwards I think he should be defended on this point.
Obama was the only one who can make change happen, not like those who ruled before and at present, they only talked, hide the truth and still urging people to be racist.,in words and in deed. For all of you judge people by color, bear in mind that our ALMIGHTY GOD create everything for all to share with each other in good faith,we are all brothers  and sisters,we must not destroy each and everyone to get that selfish desire. We knew very well that Obama was the right one but most of you doesn't want to accept because of his color..but for me if just God will allow me to be there to urge you people to back him up to the top I will.I'm not an american I'm just nothing but I know who will be the great president of US and thats Barack Obama. So unity is only way move on.
Folks, don't listen to the Clinton's, they think the general public are sheep. Their goal is to paint Barack as the "black" candidate and scare the rest of the country away from voting for him. It's called the politics of polarization. Don't fall for it America and ignore the national polls!
I would hope that all Americans will put aside the race and gender issue.  We need a president that that has the ability to lead our country out of this slumping economy, has the diplomatic skills to improve our relationship with other countries, find ways to fix social security and our health care system, just to name a few.  I don't think Mrs. Clinton has that ability.  She is too vitrolic...actually she is much like President Bush....I'll do it my way!  Her campaign is funded by huge donations from special interest groups...do you really think she will push for health care reform that doesn't benefit her monied supporters?  I don't think so.  I sincerely hope that noone votes for either candidate based on anything other than the issues. Obama is a fine candidate and so is John Edwards.  They sincerely care about the american people.  Let's think for ourselves instead of letting the media lead us like lambs to the slaughter.
To Darlene B.

Bracak was born in Hawaii. I would say to read eiter his book on this one. But there is a lot of information on him.

On Hill and Bill I would 2nd the hell fires on them. There is something wrong with them but it seems that people that like Bill and Hill do not what to really see it.
I am a 70-year old African American woman who needs to know:  How come Obama speaks of hope and change and the candidates, party not withstanding, quickly became converted and switched their messagesto mirror his?  How come Obama reminds us that you can't achieve change by doing the same thing over and over again and Rommey quotes him word for word in last night's debate?  How come the Clinton's claim that they worked so hard for racial equality, but when they saw that Obama's message was resonating with all races, they brutally qhettonized him, then the Clinton camp led by Bill, self-righteously proclaimed that Obama would win SC because of the larger number of blacks? How come the pundits in unison now say that Obama can't win as a Black candidate as if he overnight became afflicted with an acute form of reverse vitiligo? Tell me: what does it say about race in American if it is acceptable to gender vote for a white woman, but if Blacks vote for a Black man then that man, no mather what his qualifications, is  rendered "unelectible."? Obama must be doint something right.  If we democratic citizens can't be honest with ourselves about what is really going on, then we deserve to have the divisiveness of the Clinton/Bush years redux or, what is more likely, another my way or the highway republican. And to my African-American brethren: after being so royally dis-ed by the Clintons, before casting a vote for HRC, let's ask ourselves:  what have they done for us lately?  If you answer that question truthfully, should HRC be the nominee, you'll write in OBAMA or vote for a second choice candidate.
