Meet the candidates' kids

I flew from New York (having finished my duties on the Today Show Wednesday) to Columbia, South Carolina to interview Sarah Huckabee and Meghan McCain. I had been efforting the candidates' kids for a few weeks and finally started getting responses.

I sat with Sarah Huckabee in the boardroom of the Courtyard Marriott. The conference room was a mini-headquarters of sorts for her, her brother David, and a few campaign staffers. She was definitely tired, but she managed to give us a lot of time.

The candidates' kids have been very visible in this campaign, more so than we’ve ever seen -- and all in very different roles. Sarah is the national field director for her dad’s campaign and Meghan chose a less official role-- she started a blog to document her journey for those curious about the process. Both have chosen very public roles unlike the less-public Chelsea Clinton.

Why? I think we live in a time where there is unprecedented access to information, via the Internet and sites like YouTube and My Space. In this particular campaign, that access is helping connect these candidates with the masses, particularly, the younger voters. It humanizes the candidates and allows the public to see real moments... and to see that campaign kids are kids just like us. The young people relate to other young people, allowing a better connection with the parent.  It may be the reason why so many are interested and engaged in this race than previous races.

When Sarah walked in, she was busy putting out fires already (something about pro wrestler Ric Flair's car not showing up or something). Flair was attending a campaign event on behalf of Sarah's father. Her brother and I told her to just go “Woooooo” and all would be fine. (For you non-WWE fans: that’s Ric Flair's signature).

After my interview with Sarah, I asked her a few things I didn’t get a chance to during the interview. We had a moment in the hallway, so figured, why not? I asked her why she thinks her dad is the best candidate and why he would make the best president. She said she watched him make decisions with the people’s best interests in mind. In Arkansas, he was criticized from time to time for making decisions his party didn’t agree with. She says he always makes decisions that he believes are in the people’s best interest. She went on to tell me that he got criticism for launching his campaign too late in the game, to which she says, he felt he was elected to be governor of Arkansas and didn’t want to take away from the work he was doing there.

My interview with Meghan was great. I really love the fact that her dad hasn’t tried to stifle who she is. She has been stereotyped because she’s blonde and likes fashion…. and isn’t trying to be something else. She isn’t trying to be what we have come to expect of the candidates' kids (i.e. the preppy outfit-wearing daughter). She is very fashion-forward with her Louis Vuitton bag and says she shouldn’t be judged because she reads US magazine and wears trendy items. Those things do not define who she is. She also reads The New York Times and is well versed in politics and important social issues. Her biggest point: Why can’t you be both? Why can’t you be into pop culture and politics? She is 23. Shouldn’t she be allowed to enjoy her youth and still be a smart young lady? (I happen to think so. I’ve gotten a few looks before on the plane for reading US magazine and those quickly go away when I switch over to Newsweek.  People always want to place you in a box; "you’re into fashion or fun, so you can't be serious." That’s just not true.)

Interesting Sarah factoids:

Video: More on Maria's interview with Sarah Huckabee

-Sarah told me that she and her family were the ones who convinced her dad to run for president. “The rest of my family was on board before my dad was. We all kind of pushed him and were like ‘You’ve gotta do this’.”

-She also said, (and this was a total surprise to me), that her dad was a huge fan of "The Sopranos." I love that a Baptist minister loves "The Sopranos"!

-Dad is also really into doing his own laundry…. even on the road.

-I asked her if at any point she thought, “Oh, this is a lot!”
Before I could finish she said, “Oh, everyday”. But she loves it and realizes this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

-The campaign family's favorite show (meaning the staffers') is "Entourage."

-I also thought it was interesting that she connects with some of the other candidates' kids. For example, she mentions emails that have gone back and forth between her and the Romneys where they congratulate each other or say stuff like "Your dad did great tonight" or "Tell your dad to be nicer to my dad…ha ha."

-Sarah’s favorite movie star?  Kevin Costner.

-Worst punishment? Being grounded for a month and a half--though she wouldn’t reveal why!

-Biggest issue facing our country? Education.

Interesting Meghan factoids:

Video: Click here to watch more of Maria's interview with Meghan.

-She said the criticism she hears about her dad that she hates the most is comments on his age.

-She and her dad are very superstitious. She reads The New York Times and was an Art History major at Columbia University.

-If dad were to become president she says she would probably blog in the White House. She says she’s curious about what it's like to to be the “first family” and would wanna give a peek into their world and wants to “humanize” the White House.

-Meghan’s favorite movie star? Sienna Miller.

-Who else? Dita von Teese and Chloe Sevigny.

-Favorite movie? "The Big Lebowski" and "Some Like it Hot."

-Worst punishment dad laid down? She said he was a softie and that mom was the disciplinarian!

-Favorite childhood memory? Dad took her to the MTV Awards.

-Biggest issue facing our country? The environment.

Is this a reporter for Access Hollywood? What is she doing reporting on NBC news? This is awful.
With all due respect Brian, this is the most disappointing report I have seen on your program in many months.  About the contributing correspondents written report, it is not news that the daughter of a Presidential candidate considers Sienna Miller her favorie movie star.

Dear Mr. Brian Williams
I watch nightly news every day, as if it is one of life necessities.  I always have some comments on the topics that you air, but because I am disabled and always sick, I can’t send you my comments at the right time. So here I am forcing my self to sit down and spill all the thoughts in my mind then you can, if you like, air any of it in the right time when the subject is brought up.

First thought   (Nightly News Program)
I start watching nightly news since Tom Broco became the anchor, and I am attached to the program and very pleased with the way he and you (Mr. William) deliver the news.
With all due respect to Mr. Lester Holt, his way is boring, I can’t listen to the news when he substitutes you, so please would you find another newsperson.  I wish I see Ann Carrie, Soledad O’Brien, Richard Angle, or David Gregory substituting you when you are not available.  Is that too much to ask? (Forgive me if I miss spelled any name)
May be you don’t need to air this one, just make my wish come true would be very nice of you people.

Second thought (World news)
I wish you extend the nightly news to one hour and start bringing news of the other countries of the world, you know news is education beside politics.  I am disabled, sick all the time, can’t go out, and don’t have money to get cable, so you are my only window to the world.  And I think I am not the only person in this situation, I think there are millions of Americans have similar situation in one way or another, and they would like to hear the other country’s news.
The channels I can get on my TV are CBS, ABC, KTLA, and NBC, but I chose NBC to be my news channel, so I hope that my favorite channel will not disappoint me.
Please don’t tell me there is an Internet choice, I know that but I can’t use it.

Third thought  (The ware in Iraq)
In the shadow of recent news about Iraq, which said, that it is been less violent there last few weeks.  I lived in Iraq for 25 years.  I have never seen Iraqi person hating another Iraqi because of religion or sector or any ethnicity.  As an example my self, I am from an ordinary Iraqi Muslim sheat family.  One of my sisters in low is Jewish, one is Christian and one is Sunhat.  All 3 of my brothers in low are Sunhat. My best friends were Christians, sunah, and Curds.  How come, suddenly we have Muslims fight against Christian, and sheat against sunhat, and so on so forth, to a point they were on the verge of civil war?  Then, suddenly it is less violent?
What I believe is these things are made up and staged by foreign parties such as al qaieda, the CIA, or any side that benefit from keeping the war in Iraq.

Fourth thought (twisting religions principles)
I would like to say to every body in the world; don’t you see how some of the religious (all religions) leaders are manipulating the religions rolls according to their political and personal agenda?  I studied the torah, the bible and the quran, I found that they are all easy to understand, and they are all basically saying the same things.  So please be aware of religious leaders who twist the facts and try to lead the world to war to serve their personal agenda.
As a mater of fact, if you think about it, we all descended from Adam and Eve.  So why don’t we all just live and let live.
I would plea to every body don’t think religion, or ethnicity, think humanity!!!!!!

Fifth thought (Love Americans)
I always hear American people saying:  people in other countries hate Americans.  I want to tell the American people, that I traveled around, all over the world, for 30 years, with social observative eyes and mind.  And I found that most of the other country’s people like the American people. Actually they look up to them, but they hate the American government.  They think that the American people are nice, kind hearted, smart, polite, and civilized and heroes.  On the other hand the American government is controlled by the oil companies and other money cartels that care only about their benefits and profits, and they would do any thing and every thing, even killing people, just to protect their benefits.   Also keep in mind that there is a difference between country’s people and country’s government.  That is why there is a miss understanding and confusing in how the world think about us. So my brothers and sisters keep being the good American person, love your self and other people, and love our country, are proud to be Americans but don’t follow our government blindly!!!!!!!!

Sixth thought (the real news reporter)
I remember the sixties and the seventies that every body around the world want to hear the news from the American’s news reporters, because they search for the truth and tell the truth no matter what, even if it is against the America’s government or their allies.
But since president Reign era I start noticing the fatting of this notion.   You news reporters became like a puppet repeating only what the government say with little analysis to make you look like a reporters.  I feel very sorry for you to loosing that spirit of adventuring, challenging, chasing, and extracting the truth.  If you want example I have a very long list of events that needed to be investigated to get the real truth not the U.S. government version.

Seventh thought (illegal immigration braking our economy))
I don’t want to judge people, I just want to tell you real life facts I live every day and you judge!!!!!!!
The apartments where I live are tax exempt because it is suppose to be rented at (low rent) to American people (I mean legal immigrants and citizens) with low income.
The real situation is 95% of the people are illegal Mexican immigrants with fake documents.  Most of them either work under the table and don’t pay any taxes, but still receive food stamps and all kind of the governmental aids especially they have many kids; Or they work 2 jobs, one with low payment which they report to the IRS and the other job with high payment is under the table, and ofcaurs they still receive food stamps, and medical and so on.  I know for fact that none of the Mexican people pays the real amount of tax that they suppose to pay. I know for fact that every 10 people live in one bedroom.  That is how they save money to send to families in Mexico.  The bottom line is American tax payers are getting rubbed this way, and our tax money is going to Mexico Please don’t take me wrong I like Mexican people.  Most those people I am talking about are my friends.  But I love America too, and I don’t want to see our economy going down the toilet.
And we wonder why our California and our USA is in defeset of trillions of dolor.  Hay people I am not telling you a secret these are facts every body knows it, but I don’t know why no body do any thing about it.  Our governor comes after the real poor and disabled people like me and cut down their SSI.  Please doesn’t tell me how the government supposes to know who is really disabled and poor from the fake ones.

P.S. all what I mentioned above is true for all illegal immigrants Mexican or from other countries.

Not only is this the most disappoiting report, this is the worst piece of writing I have seen in a long time. Were the editors asleep? Hardly a worthwhile endeavor and I find it hard to believe there was nothing else to fill news time.
What a refreshing look at this particular side of the presidential race. It gave us a small peek into these candidates personal lives and even humanized them at tad for me. Personally, I'd like to see more.  I will not base my vote entirely on who is the best parent or who has the best child, mind you, but it was helpful to be able to view this in such an open race. Kudos, NBC.
Um... this report is terrible. I've always like Ms. Menounos, but my dog is a better writer than she is. This interview could've really sparkled - instead it just plain stinks. Get somebody else next time.
Dear Brian,
As a junior high school teacher who is continually frustrated by the negative influences most of our female "role models" have on the youth of this country, this was a report that simply had to air. Hearing from beautiful young, educated women who are filling such large shoes and enaging in such pursuits is something we need to see more of.
Dear Brian,
Thank you for showing us this side of the election. My only criticism is that I would like to hear from the other candidate's children as well.

In a world littered with Lindsays, Brittanys and Paris's, it was delightful to see Meghan, Sarah and Maria.

Dear Brian,
Thanks for giving us another window into the lives of the candidates. I have never been so unsure about whom to vote for and every bit helps.

Dear Nightly,
I hope as the campaign unfolds and the race tightens we get more such intimate looks into the candidate's lives and the lives of their families. On another note, it was very revealling as to the times we live in. Watching the story I can't help but feel that we will all need to adjust to a whole new type of first family - one with children who have grown up frequenting and contributing to such pop phenomenons as myspace and youtube etc. Throw away the cookie cutter. Not necessarily a bad thing just a sign of the times.  Looking forward to more.
Ms. Menounos interviewed President Bush at my school back in 2000 when she was a Channel One reporter. It is so great to see her return to her broadcast journalism roots with Nightly. I will always remember her coverage of the AIDS crisis in South Africa and her travels to El Salvador in midst of the earthquakes. Like her, I am a first generation American from a non English speaking home. She represents inspiration for so many of us.  She is also one of the few in Hollywood who hasn't made a name for herself through drinking, drugging or sleeping around. Again, it's wonderful to see her back doing more serious work. I hope it leads to more. Frankly, if she or anyone else at NBC is reading this PLEASE see that she continues her career in this regard.  She is a rare and superior role model.

I enjoyed this report and appreciate being able to hear from the children of Mike Huckabee and John McCain. I too would love to hear from some of the other candidate's children
I agree with Meghan and Maria...there is absolutely nothing wrong with being interested in fashion and pop culture and politics and academic issues all at once!
Dear Brian,
If this were the only way you covered the election then I would, of course, be critical. Instead I praise you. for giving us a tad more insight into the world of the candidates. Every bit helps in this race.  If I have any criticism it's that I would love to meet the other candidate's children. Romney's children have been campaigning hard for him and Chelsea is very quietly carrying a load for Clinton.  I would love to learn more about Chelsea and her journey - campaigning before as a child later as a teen and now as a woman.

I know you only have a half hour and could only afford a few minutes to this piece but the video blogs etc. filled in a lot of gaps. Hopefully, we'll hear from more of the children and family members.

I am a single father of three. One is a senior in high school and two others are in college.  The gang was back together for the long weekend and, over dinner, the senior actually mentioned this report to me. I masked my excitement and instead coaxed her into a political discussion. It turned out that my oldest from college also saw the report and quickly chimed in with her opinions. Before I knew it, the middle one had his share to say and there was a full on debate about the correct candidate of choice - a first in the Dunston household. My hope is that these discussions continue and go one after I am gone.

This report was a great way to get more young people involved in the election process. Apathy in this country, which has eroded us in many ways, seems most apparent, and evidenced in, our presidential elections.  How George W. Bush could steal two victories and illegally lead us into war seems to support this.  We desperately need people to care again about whom is elected and what better place to start than with our young?  Sean Combs "vote or die" campaign was a positive step toward such an initiative. I hope, too, that he continues and that you cover that as well.

Regards,
E. Dunston
I agree with the pattern behind most of these posts.

I do agree that the media is a 'puppet' to the government, as I studied Broadcasting at the Walter Cronkite School at ASU and knowledgeable on the subject. However, I am happy that there are a small percentage of people that notice this; unfortunately it's not enough.

AND WITH THAT... I can understand the reason behind the 'fluffiness' of this writing. It's what 'America' wants... it's simple- it's easy.

I guess my biggest complaint is that Maria M. is reporting on NBC- Today Show and the Nat'l news... I am from the media side and then over to Hollywood and worked on those 'entertainment shows' - Is Mary Hart looking to do national anchoring for hard journalism?? It's hard to respect a broadcaster from Entertainment to tell you the Evening News. It's comparing apples and oranges - the same yet extremely different. I am not going to the gas station to get my clothes dry-cleaned... why would I turn to E! for the hard- hitting news just like why would I turn to FOX or MSNBC for "who's hot- who's not".

... Just a thought from a successful and educated late 20-something who loves style and 'gossip' as much as local and world events and I would rather not see my favorite Entertainment Reporter giving me 'hard news'.
"Efforting"?  "Efforting"?
Maria-
DON'T listen to the "haters" who have responded negatively to this piece. I thought the article was well-done and you got information across that many young people are curious about! Good job!
- Lauren
Meghan McCain speaks as if she is an only child, she isn't.  It would be nice if everyone knew about McCains previous wife and the children he left behind.  I live in Arizona and have heard that his son would love to help out on the campaign but he has not been invited to.  What is McCain trying to hide? Is he a dead beat dad? or is there nothing to hide and he has been involved in his other children's lives all this time if so why aren't they standing up with him next to their sister?
Meghan McCain on politics
