Rudy's Florida strategy

Editor's note: Mike Taibbi filed this while on the road this week with Rudy Giuliani in Ft. Myers, Florida. His report airs tonight on the broadcast.

MtaibbiRudy Giuliani was beaming, and with good reason. He’d just finished the second of six stops during a long day of his Florida bus tour, this one a town meeting in the megachurch centerpiece of the Shell Point senior citizens complex, and the place had been packed with people who sure sounded like supporters. One of them, an enthusiastic woman named Bonnie Raymo, sounded like she’d been briefed in detail on the 63-year-old former New York mayor’s "late start" strategy of launching his campaign with a Florida win while his opponents spent their ammo in a circular firing squad before getting to Florida, none of them the clear leader and all of them weakened enough to cede the front page to a new lead story: Rudy!

"It seems like he’s putting all his eggs in this basket, (but) he’s trying everywhere," Bonnie said, "and it has been unpredictable for everyone. And, the polls are all wrong. I think he knows how to operate…and he’s the one who’s going to beat Hillary!"

Giuliani 2008 FloridaAt Shell Point, Giuliani hit every applause line and the crowd of nearly a thousand responded. He was for "staying on offense in the Islamist terrorists’ war against us," and for stimulating the economy by making the Bush tax cuts permanent and by pushing for new cuts in the corporate and capital gains taxes. He’d been introduced at this and other stops by Steve Forbes, the "flat tax" Republican who’d sought the White House himself a couple of cycles ago, and now Giuliani was finding a moment in each appearance to wave a single sheet of paper in front of him. "A one page tax return," he said. There were cheers each time.

"These people give you your enthusiasm," he told me after the Shell Point appearance, sitting in his campaign bus. "They’re terrifically excited. You’ve got to look at the states where you can look at the voters, you look at the polls and you say to yourself ‘this is the place I can make the biggest impression.'" (Photo: Chris O'meara, Associated Press)

He concedes it’s an unconventional strategy that may not work. "We’ll see," he said several times in the days we spent with his campaign both in Florida and in New Hampshire before that state’s primary. There’d been stories this past weekend that a dozen or so of his senior campaign staff are forgoing salaries for the month of January to husband dwindling resources. And he’d smiled, ruefully it seemed, when during an appearance at the El Ray Jesus Church in Cuban-American Miami the chorus had sung "I’m somewhere in the future… and I look much better than I do right now!" By the time he took a seat in that church his longtime double-digit lead in Florida had evaporated completely; he'd fallen into what was essentially a four-way tie and there was time to fall farthur before the January 29th winner-take-all primary.

"But you don’t posit all the worst things that could happen," he told me, "and then say, ‘are you done?’ if they happen. I believe we’re gonna win Florida and I think that’ll turn the whole thing around."

Maybe, but a lot of trends would have to break in a different direction for that to happen. This is a candidate who as recently as early December was still seen by many as not just the favorite on the Republican side but as the inevitable nominee. This was Rudy, after all; everybody knows him, the thinking went (and, as Giuliani reminded reporters during a fundraising visit to London last summer, he was one of the "four or five" best known Americans on the planet); and everyone knows what he’s known for.

Turns out that in a wide-open race, high name recognition hasn’t been enough. They may have known him in Iowa but they didn’t vote for him… a weak fourth. In New Hampshire he spent millions of his war chest, then pulled his television ads, then skipped to Florida having bagged barely 20,00 votes, another weak fourth. No numbers, no buzz, in a state where logic suggested he should have had some traction just for being, well, Rudy.

It could be that the would-be Giuliani juggernaut was never really a juggernaut at all… that he was just the best-known name brand until the others caught up. It could also be that his legitimate fame and iconic status were badly damaged by both his limited participation in the early part of the nomination process and by a series of negative press reports about his personal and business lives, and about his connection to and support for his indicted friend Bernie Kerik, the former New York Police Commissioner Giuliani touted to President Bush for the job of Homeland Security chief.

In Florida I suggested that if he became a viable candidate again after success in that state’s primary, all those reports about all those controversial issues would be given an explosive new life. I mentioned the Swift Boat Veterans’ efforts to derail the John Kerry campaign. "That stuff doesn’t matter," he told me. "People don’t vote on things like that. People vote on who’s going to be the best to lead the country. Who’s going to be the best to deal with the economy, who’s going to be the best to deal with Islamic terrorism. What you’re talking about happens to every candidate… you just have to rise above it."

But "those things" do matter to some voters we talked to. At a later event Monday afternoon, Giuliani was giving his stump speech to a good-sized crowd at a waterside shopping mall in Punta Gorda. One man, a transplanted New Yorker named Bob Clarke, listened intently but kept his hands in his pockets after each of the candidate’s applause lines.

He liked Giuliani, Clarke explained. "I think he’s got a plan for America. But if he gets more successful I think there’ll be some things coming out about his background…whether they be true or false. He’s got a very public track record… and I know that divorce and other things that are in his background will come into play with some voters." Clarke added, "I’m a registered Republican and I’d like to stay there if I can. I’m still looking for a candidate."

Another woman in the crowd, looking at Giuliani almost adoringly, told me she’d been waiting for more than two hours for his campaign bus to arrive. "I’ve always wanted to see him," she said, snapping off another photo. "For years!" So, I asked, I guess you’re voting for him?

She looked right at me, her brow furrowed and her eyes revealing an inner conversation. "I think so," she said, a lingering question in her answer, and turned her camera to the podium again.

Rudy has the Bush base and still he's a loser. I loved the fake bomb threat which Rudy used to sell his story of 9/11 and how he was the one who saved New York City from the terrorist. Yes it was Rudy all by himself.  Now that didn't work so he's now using the Karl Rove and Rev. Huck blueprint of using God and Religion to get votes.  He should look at Mitt got votes by lying to the voters in Michigan by telling them he would bring back the car industry, just as India releases it's 2,500 dollar car that goes 150 miles on a gallon of gas.  Now Mitt will move on to other States and lie to those voters for a vote.  He is his Father's son.  Rudy has to get with the program and think of new lies to spread not the old ones that are already used.  Chris Matthews might be able to help Rudy now that Fred in only looking to when his State. McCain is still running on War and Torture as the way to go.  The good news for Republicans was the former Rep. of Michigan didn't make the headlines until after the primary. Republican voters can be proud they had an elected official who was helping the terrorist with taxpayers money.  Who's next?
Mike ~ I think that Rudy will make a good president.
There are three viable candidates to run against the democrats: 1) Romney 2) McCain 3) Rudy.

Rudy should be the GOP nominee.  Here is the reason why:

http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/01/rudy_giuliani_should_be_gop_no.html
Just a correction...Rudy didn't get a weak fourth in Iowa, he placed a terrible sixth
Giuliani is pro-choice and supports gay rights which, won't go over good with Republicans.  Period!
Rudy??? You must be kidding! As a real New Yorker,I go on record as saying he would be a far bigger disaster then even GWB! I also wonder what real republican could muster the leap of faith it would take to pull the lever for this clown!
Romney, Guiliani, McCain - hey, kinda nice we have this sort of excellence in our candidates.  Remember Bob Dole, great guy, great American, but not so electable. But the Dems, Lordy!  Completely different universe.  Queen Hillary is the scariest of course (catch her little announcement that being Pres means micro-managing Everything/Everyone Herself??  After winning a primary by crying??), Obama's maybe a nice guy but so was Jimmy Carter, and the others?  Everyone who is successful is now a class enemy - nice twist on the American dream.  Well, great race so far, let's hope common sense plays a major role.
Rudy is going to win Florida, and will win most of the Feb. 5th states. Then he'll win the nomination, and then the presidency. Here's why:

“Mayor Giuliani Inherited $2.3 Billion Budget Deficit And Turned It Into Multi-Billion Dollar Surplus.”(Steven Lee Myers,“A Deficit Revisited,” The New York Times, 7/31/94.)

NYC’s crime reduction under Giuliani was THREE TO SIX TIMES THE NATIONAL AVERAGE!  He turned NYC into the safest big city in America.

I was in NYC on 9/11 - all I can say is that from great tragedies, sometimes great heroes emerge.  Rudy was a hero to all New Yorkers, and the nation, on that day - we all thanked God when he got on the air and let us know he was in command.

But you know, all I need to know about Rudy is this: in 1995, NYC hosted a big event at Lincoln Center for various foreign dignitaries. Guess who crashed the party? Yasser Arafat. Rudy’s response? HE THREW THE TERRORIST BASTARD OUT THE DOOR! When the city’s liberal elite cried foul, Giuliani replied, "I would not invite Yasser Arafat to anything, anywhere, anytime, anyplace. I don’t forget."

BE VOCAL, BE LOCAL – let’s get this guy elected! The time to act is NOW!
Florida may be Rudy country, but this is only one state in the United States of America. I predict Romney will get the Republican Nomination.
If Rudy's strategy works will it be copied by others in 2012,2016 etc or is it a unique background that might allow Rudy to succedd with this?
What would be the implications for Iowa and NH if it works?
Rudy! come on get real. What a waste of ink. More baggage then one of those new Air Buses.
The man has no character, if not for 911 he would probably be in jail. You lead by example not by uncontested lip service. He reached an all time low in the debates hackling like a dumb ass every time Ron Paul spoke.I can't be the only one that feels this way.
Ever wonder what the real heros of 9/11 think about rudy?
The 9/11 Commission noted in its report that lack of preparedness could have led to the deaths of first responders at the scene of the attacks. The Commission noted that the radios in use by the fire department were the same radios which had been criticized for their ineffectiveness following the 1993 World Trade Center bombings. Family members of 9/11 victims have said that these radios were a complaint of emergency services responders for years.[96][97] The radios were not working when Fire Department chiefs ordered the 343 firefighters inside the towers to evacuate, and they remained in the towers as the towers collapsed.[98][99] However, when Giuliani testified before the 9/11 Commission he said that the firefighters ignored the evacuation order out of an effort to save lives.[100][101] Giuliani testified to the Commission, where some family members of responders who had died in the attacks appeared to protest his statements.[102] A 1994 mayoral office study of the radios indicated that they were faulty.

Ck. the link below for wikipedia on rudy...

Giuliani took control away from agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, leaving the "largely unknown" city Department of Design and Construction in charge of recovery and cleanup. Documents indicate that the Giuliani administration never enforced federal requirements requiring the wearing of respirators. Concurrently, the administration threatened companies with dismissal if cleanup work slowed.[122][123]

Yeppers rudy is well connected,he lies, he represents arab sheiks and mega corps against our government,33Million for 2700 not field test radios in a no bid contract with motorola...Hmmm sounds fishy to me over 12K per phone yet still not interoperable capability... Amazing
Rudy is a non starter
Economy Romney is whats needed.
McCain pain is jobs are gone for good but I can start a war.
I need a job not a war.

Rudy is out of it, and Romney can beat Bam Bam or Hilarious.
Giuliani,He really sucks. He is cold and should not even be running for office. He is using 911 as his backbone for fighting terrorist he is worthless and to use such a tragedy is sick and people that support him are no better. From Mayor to pres what a laugh. Is this a joke or what?He said he will keep The Bush's Tax plan that is just what we need.(Joke)
Electability, Sir..  do you have any?  Don't count on Florida to save you..  we think you're a jackass, too.
Look at the primary results, noone cares about this womanizer

why news on this guy and not Paul?
I can't stand Hillary and the only way I will vote for her, if she wins the primary, is if she is against Guiliani! He is SO sleazy!!!!
It is absolutely a-PAUL-ing that you go on about Giuliani and his "strategy", but don't even mention Ron Paul.  Not once did you mention that he (Paul) finished fourth in Michigan.  Where was Giuliani?  Last?  This truly is media bias, and I'm not even a Ron Paul supporter!  What are you trying to hide?  Shame on you Brian Williams, and shame on NBC.  You are no better than Bill O'Reilly on Fox.
If you read anything by Taibbi, just believe the opposite of what he says is true.  Any reader of "Rolling Stone" magazine is familiar with his ultra-liberal reporting and his total lack of journalistic objectivity.

NBC continues its deliberate slide towards unabashed liberal reporting and distortion of the facts by employing this hack.  It's proof positive that NBC must stand for Never Believe (these) Creeps!
Mr. Guiliani's approach reminds me of test taking strategy,  work on high scoring questions to get the passing grade, it does not matter how well you know the subject, you scored enough points to pass the test and that is what counts.

Sorry, this is not a test for the presidency.
Guliani will be worse than Bush for this country. He has no moral, ethical values. He is in the fray only because of the big bucks of his corrupt syndicate.
He will do to the common people just what he did to two wives and children. DUMPING THEM.
Politics? Chess? If he's running his "gambling" campaign like he would the white house...no thank you! He can waste 40 million on "no votes", HOPE he wins florida...sounds like another politician I know...only he was gambling that Iraq would produce WMD's and Roses.
Giuliani better hope he loses in Florida.  Then he can return to his life of making millions of dollars on the lecture and consulting circuit.

He really doesn't want any more of his skeletons to come out of the closet.
I believe it's time for America to look for a leader of all the people.........the rich, the poor, the divorce' , the asian, african, white, indian, native american, ...everyone.......in a city of six million  before, during and after the tragedy of 9-11  Rudy has shown he is a leader and preservationist of all the people. He's been tough on crime, welfare reform, social values, economy and terrorism and he genuinely cares...that's alot out of one man.
I know we've got alot of transplants down here, but they're not ALL from NYC, and even the ones that are don't automatically support Mr. Noun-verb-9/11.

BTW, you seem to keep forgetting to mention that in addition to having no delegates right now, hes been beaten by Fred Thompson and Ron Paul, who does NOT have zero delegates at this point.
"Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do and how you do it." -Mayor Giuliani, New York Newsday pg A3 4/20/98
i find it interesting that becuase Giuliani doesn't have any delegates yet, the logic goes, he must be a poor candidate.  This suggests to me that the rest of the nation must continue to pander to the Iowa/NH crowd that argues that they are best to select our candidates for us.  I think its perfectly rational to look at those early primaries, realize that they no longer are the perfect surrogate for the rest of the country and ignore them in order to get your message out to the REST OF THE COUNTRY.  Not sure who i'll vote for yet, but just because someone does poor in Iowa/NH doesn't disqualify them imho.
"If you read anything by Taibbi, just believe the opposite of what he says is true.  Any reader of "Rolling Stone" magazine is familiar with his ultra-liberal reporting and his total lack of journalistic objectivity. "

This article is by MIKE Taibbi. The Rolling Stone writer is MATT Taibbi. Never believe anything posted by someone who can't tell the difference. This article is hardly "ultra-liberal", but anyone who doesn't parrot the neo-con party line is bound to be denounced
as one. Rudy is a corrupt, authoritarian warmonger who  plays ceaselessly on fear to get elected and consolidate power into his own hands. Do we need another four years of that?
How sad some of the comments are as Rudy used a fake bomb threat in Florida to start his speech on 9/11. Now Rudy is selling the story it was he alone who saved New York City from the terrorist.  After reading some of the comments what comes to mine is Chicken Little the Sky is falling.  People will say anything if their paid and other will follow blindly.  What ever happen to the Americans who stood up for truth and justice.  Rudy robbed the 9/11 victims and as for Christian Values cross dressing and shag fund for his girlfriends says it all.  When got his second divorce he said he only had 7 thousands dollars, he did will with the corruptions policies he got involved in as now he's the 7 million dollar man still collecting.  His partners are now indicted but he's still drawing in money from the corrupt business.  There are more stories to come out. Rudy attacked the immigrants when he started his campaign now he's begging for their votes and even speaking Spanish oh my.  Look lying worked for Mitt in Michigan as Republicans voted after being told Mitt would bring back the car industry.  Like that will ever happen, but it shows people will believe any lie their told.  Rudy even picked up on the Karl Rove, Rev. Huckabee trick of using God and Religion to get votes from Christians.  I can't wait for Rudy to say God told him to be President.

Well I guess Christian Religious Republicans want another Repubican President to stay the course of stealing and corruption.  The Saudis are smiling as they loan more money to the US Treasury and buy up shares of US banks. It will be much easier to take over the US with Repubicans in charge.  Change will come to the USA as Americans will soon be working for the Saudis and paying taxes to the Saudis.  If you don't think that's the truth check out how the Stock Market keeps falling and the Middle East keeps getting richer.
Yes he will and here is why. He is in Florida rigging the Diebold's. Jeb state too. Im sure of it.

LOL!
Wow,the misinformation on the left is astounding,to the people who say Rudy is corrupt I say this get your
facts straight, this is the same guy who broke the back of the New York mob as an associate attorney general,it's funny when tough decisions needed to be made and executed most sat back and watched Rudy go
now 4 years later the worst thing liberals and orthodox right wingers can say is that he'S been divorced.I think the time has come for a no nonsense
strong willed president who will get the job done no matter how tough the decisions.Rudy is the man for the
job,(look at his record as a fiscal conservative while
mayor)Rudy has his flaws, being corrupt is not one of them.
Bernie kerik--Gambino Family Values?
Did Rudi make the trains run on time?
Way to go, Pat Perrotta!  Couldn't have said it any better myself.  If you think the next 8 years are going to be smooth sailing, vote for any of the other candidates.  If you think the next 8 years are going to be business as usual, then worry a LOT about the candidate's stance on non-issues like abortion, and how many times the candidate has been married.  If you think that the next 8 years are going to be a bumpy ride, between the economy and international jihad, well, the ONLY choice is Rudy Giuliani.

BE VOCAL, BE LOCAL - THE TIME IS NOW!  GO RUDY!
Although I am a Democrat and will support either Hilary or Obama in the General election, if I were to support a Republican it would be Rudy Giuliani.

The problem with most conservative Republicans is that they do not focus on the big picture. They tend to obsess on things that do not really matter as it pertains to the future of our nation (i.e. Rudy is a glory hog, Rudy was divorced, Rudy's business made millions). The reality is that Rudy is a symbol of strength and action. This is a man who does what he says he is going to do. He led the charge against syndicated crime and the evolution of NYC into one of the safest large cities in Amercia. Interestingly enough, when we were in a panic on 9/11 and in the days that followed it was the voice of Rudy that re-assured us, and not our own President. Do you not remember this?

Every time I hear a fundamentalist, "holier than thou", extremist criticize a person for having normal, human short comings I just cringe. By the way, I do not appreciate liberal,"bleeding heart", victims either. Regardless of who the Democratic nominee is they could lose in the General election. I just hope and pray that if a Republican becomes our next President it is not a sanctimonious, hypocrit like Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee. Compared to them Rudy's not so bad.
Rudy Giuliani needs to become more informative of what has been happening with the continued loss of the Federal Employees since the Clinton era.  To try and use the tactic that we need to cut the Federal Employee jobs is a absolute rediculious idea.   The federal workforce has erroded so much because of Clinton's sactics on cutting the workforce.  We are losing the contiuity and knowledge base and the jobs are running on a thread.  The Federal forceforce reduction is not going to help the federal deficit.  The Federal agency's need to utilize the money in a smarter manner but we need the federal civilian workforce to do the jobs.  What has been happening is while a Federal worker is not rehired the politicians has decided to put contracted people in to do the jobs in some agencys and it is costing the taxpayer more money because of the costs associated for paying the contractor worker and the overhead costs to the temperary agencys who get a chunck of the pay.  The hiring needs to done with the agency Human Recource reachng out to potential government employees.  Wake up Kudy and see what has become of the federal workforce and the strength of the different agencys.  Do some research for yourself, the reduction idea is wrong.
Of all the candidates Giuliani is the one that I like the least; but I would like him to win the nomination because he will be the easiest one for Hilary. He, simply, is the one with the heaviest baggage.
Rudy is the guy to beat
He can take on all the heat

This video says it all...

Now  his is married to his  mistress and  he  own kids  dont  even care for him, LOL.I will bet money he will leave his current wife for Katherine Harris, and  further climb the ladder of  opportunity. He is  trying to ride this 9/11 horse all the way to the White House and for those  who are dumb enough to support this fool will get what they deserve. More lies and  more  deceit.
