ABOUT THIS BLOG

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Netcast viewers: we hear you

Posted: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 5:15 PM by Barbara Raab

By Alexandra Wallace, executive producer

We received a lot of positive emails and blog comments about our new and improved home of Nightly News on the Web. But we also heard from many of our loyal netcast viewers, who were desperately seeking their preferred method of watching our broadcast.

We hear you. The netcast is back. Here's how to find it on our redesigned site:

On the far left side of our home page, under "Video," click on or scroll over the word "Previously," and select the option, "As broadcast" (see image below). That's it.

Please bear in mind that tonight's netcast may be slightly delayed due to the volume of political news from New Hampshire, but it will be there -- we promise. Thanks for your patience and your feedback -- and thank you for watching Nightly News.

Though will take some getting used to, I like the new site, but one correction from NH.MSNBC/NBC kept saying that women voters left Obama for Clinton from Iowa to New Hampshire. At the same time, your own information on screen showed the percentage of women voters went from 35-34,esentially ,no change. The real change was women voters left Edwards for Clinton. Your num bers showed it clearly, but you kept referring to Obama losin g support.Don't get too focused on a 2 person race.Just cover the facts .
I was offended by the "male" view of Hillary and the all too obvious attempt to diminsh a very substantial victory in New Hamphire.  It is obvious that Chris Matthews and his co-anchor are befuddled at the Hillary factor.  Guys like this as well as the commentators like Carl Bernstein and others will feel comfortable only with a male in the White House.  It is about time MSNBC understands that women have a right to the full benefits of the political process and it now time for a woman in the White House.  Yes, I am going with my own this election and I truly hope many women will realize that their time has come. I suggest that MSNBC hire co-anchors which better reflect the reality of America.  Right now, as I write this, I am listening to Brian Williams interview Barack Obama which has gone on for at least 20 minutes and is free national exposure for a MSNBC's favored Democratic candidate. For shame.
With all the problems this country has with hungar, homelessness, mental health issues, poor education and little to no health coverage for a vast majority of its people, you have to waste your time on the electronics show in Las Vegas.  Things that will change our lives for the better!!!  Not even, just more expensive, useless toys for the spoiled young people of this country who have been brainwashed by the media and these businesses into believing that this stuff is important to their ability to lead a good life.   Shame on you for supporting these companies who rip us off and not doing anything to educate anyone on not to buy into this useless electronics and a life style way of reach for most of the country. I have young people and have had a difficult time raising them to resist this kind of economic brain washing.  My husband is a computer network specialist who participated in the research to create home computers.  He comes home to be with his family and not play on these electronics.  These are business tools not toys.
Brian,
Why have all the news media ignored John Edwards and his campaign? You only cover Obama and Clinton. The last I knew Edwards is still running. Thank you.
PLEASE PLEASE TELL BRIAN HOW TO PRONOUNCE NEV-AAAA-DA
NOT NEV-AH DA.  SOMETIMES HE GETS IT RIGHT, BUT MOSTLY NOT!!
I am a New Hampshire voter and my wife and I spent four hours watching your post-primary analysis.  Whereas Brian Williams, Tim Russert, Chuck Todd, Keith Olberman, Pat Buchanan, and Tom Brokaw came across as statesmenlike, Chris Matthews came across as a petulant and vindictive sore loser who was unwilling to accept that the media, pollsters, and pundits had the election all wrong on the Democratic side.  Tom Brokaw was right to reprimand him like a child on national TV because he deserved it.

Tonite Chris' explanation for the media and pollsters missing the mark is that NH voters were racially motivated to vote against Obama but were unwilling to admit that to pollsters beforehand.  What rubbish!  Thousands of people were torn between Obama and Hillary and she won by 3% - thanks to several factors which Chris chooses to ignore including a lot of women voting.  He is desperate to save face and this reflects poorly on him.  Since he's one of your flagship guys, it's not good for NBC either.  The guy needs his wings clipped.
I am a retired 30 year veteran teacher with advanced degrees and with a true love for children and teaching.  Having taught first grade children all the 30 years I can remember shedding many tears when presented with problems of children coming to my class having been beaten, starved, wearing shoes with holes in the soles, having been abandoned by one or both parents, etc. I was considered a very kind, loving, strong person and can have a very personal respect that dear Hillary Clinton showed that a person of her intellect and responsibility could have a soft side that she did not mind showing. As mistreated as she had been been by many of the media males, etc. I should expect that if she had any heart at all it might show through!
Welcome to the future of television.  VOD over the Internet.  Nice to see you paid attention to the details of design and structure - just wonder if your viewing audience realizes that this is the beginning of what I'm sure historians will call the Internet Video Revolution.
"They say you want a revolution, well you know we all wanna change the world".
Please correct Brian Williams pronunciation Of our state!!!!!! It is Nevada with a long A Thank you.
Hi you are doing a debate are you asking the questions? The dem are for young people they keep saying that they want to make it better for them.Well my son is gay he is 19 .What are there veiws on the subject. And how would they make it better for him.and he can vote and a lot of his friends are also gay.I would like them to have the some rights there children have.Like they are always saying. And he has morals and value .He doesn't do drugs or drink. He goes to college .He is a good kid.
I watched and listened to the results from NH but, the only ones I heard about was those in which you have targeted as the front runners.  Why can't you talk about Ron Paul and some of the other candidates, Perhaps, it's because you don't want the american people to be well informed about his stands.
Frankly, I'm tired of hearing about Hillary, Obama, and Romney. Please give all the candidates a chance.
Has everyone but me forgotten about the whitewater scandal and the three gentlemen who are now deceased. How can anyone want Hillary Clinton, who was up to her eyebrows in that mess, as a leader.
I am amazed that this country has historical memory loss.  The Clinton family made a mockery of women in the home and at work. I witnessed too many women staying in abusive marriages because of this family.  Do you really think the Clinton/Intern debacle helped women in the workplace?  Because Hillary did not take a hard stand against her husband's offensive behavior  I think it has made it difficult for women when there is a power differential to stand up and do the right thing, which is to demand the offensive behavior to stop.  Do we really want such a dysfunctional family back in the white house?
What happened to the Sat and Sun netcasts?
Thanks for responding so quickly and getting the netcasts back up--for those of us US expats, the internet can often be our only source of US news.
Hello, this message is for Brian Williams about his newscast tonight, and the comments about H. Clinton's moist eyes (she wasn't crying). Jon Stewart had a wonderful send up on Tuesday night's show about the whole thing. His Daily Show had pictures of past male politicians in tears and sobbing over various issues, and then he showed the photo of Hillary. Next, Jon said deadpan into the camera with raised eyebrows "Tears? Oh, please!"  When are people going to stop judging Hillary with double standards? Male politicians have had their chances for over 200 years to rule and legislate effectively. Let's let a woman have a chance, A CHANCE to run for the office without analyzing her every movement to pieces. Let's level the playing field.
I love it when it works. Remember if you are using firefox with ad blocker you can only see the first video. It appears to hang but inf act it is just hanging up on the ad. Turn off adblokcer and tada.. you get to see the video and MSN earns the money from ads to pay for the new interface.. worth it.
I love to watch the Nightly News webcast.  It is a great way for me to multi-task by catching the news while I work at my desk.  But....it seems like the site is constantly changing and I lately, I am always having to search for how to catch the webcast.  I will check out your suggestion, but it seems to take a long time for your Nightly News home page to load.

Once you get this process set, can you try to not change it again?
Brian:
Your evening news is the pick of the network litter. The new studio is a distraction.  The ceiling lights reflecting off your desktop ( I think you've fixed that one) and the cluttered background merely distract. Michael Douglas' voice is like taking a sleeping pill. Did he blackmail someone to get that job?
DEAR BRIAN, WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT HILLARY CLINTON. THINK ABOUT THIS, IF GOING UNDER PRESSURE TO BE A CANADATE FOR PRESIDENT AND WE HAVE TEARS ,WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THEY BECOME PRESIDENT WITH HEAVIER ISSUES THAN THIS ARE WE STILL GOING TO SHOW TEARS FOR SYMPATHY? SHE'S GOING TO NEED ALOT OF TISSUES. WE NEED SOMEONE STRONG WHO CAN HANDLE ANY PROBLEM THAT COMES THEIR WAY,LETS THINK BEFORE WE VOTE.
Want to know what went wrong with the polls in NH? Conduct an exit poll and if you find that the results agree not with the votes, but with the earlier polls, you can probably figure it out from there. (Be sure to conduct this poll under the same conditions of spousal presence.)

The new site is great, but is it possible for me to download the Nightly News to my IPod?

I understand you don't work with Itunes anymore, but can I download a PodCast to my IPod?

Thanks.
As I am reading these responses, I am hearing and confirming over and over again basic pleas, please please report the news, as Joyce from Baltimore says be a news reporter not a news maker.  There are so many of us out here that want to know the facts, the differences for example between Edwards', Obama's and Clinton's health plans, reality checks about assertions made by the candidates.
You will have an new opportunity with an upcoming debate.  The ABC debate with Charley Gibson would be a model to follow.  Notice that unlike Tim Russert or Chris Matthews, Charlie did not want to play Gotcha but allowed longer than 30 second responses, and allowed the candidates to respond to each other.
Do we as an audience want to know constantly who is ahead and who is the loser?  Do we want to brand a loser who receives such a small difference as 2 or 3% fewer votes in one state?  I don't think so.  Do we really care if Chris Matthews is annoyed because Hillary claps (notice the male candidates also clap) or that her laugh is shrill (notice male candidates' laughter was not analyzed).    I find it annoying and unnecessary and not productive in what I think is the media's main function, to inform us.
A loyal Brian watcher BUT...after last night in Nevada and hearing, Ne-vah-da, Ne-va-dah, Ne-vah-dah is enough to make me jump to Charlie at least until Brian leaves Nevada.  I cringe if he ever goes to Omaha...can hear it now..Ne-brah-ska, Ne-brah-ska-ska....sheesh. can the eastern elitism Brian...get with it.
I do watch NBC news every day/night, but I am so disappointed and I think it unconscionable that in your reports regarding debates, caucuses, candidates, you act as though John Edwards is dead.  He came in second in Iowa and his name is never, ever even mentioned.  I'm sick of seeing Hillary's crocodile tears over and over and over and no mention of Edwards, who is still a viable candidate.  It appears obvious that the powers that be at NBC do not want him in the running.
I recently received an email from a friend whose son is US Marine on duty in Iraq. The email told of a recent visit by Denzel Washington to Brooks Army Medical Center, where he learned that there are accomodations for families of hospitalized soldiers called Fisher Houses. Denzel asked how much would it cost to build one and promptly wrote out a check for that amount. With all the political mudslinging, "news" items about the "brats" (Paris, Lindsay, Brittney et al),  and other depressing bits appearing in the media these days, here is a piece that, if true, would uplift a lot of folks and make many of the families of these heroes feel better. NBC Nightly News with Brian is watched by millions who would love to hear some "good news" for a change.
I'm not sure if this is where to express this, but I couldn't find another place. This morning I read a news story on Yahoo News about a pregnant service woman who disapeared near the front gate of a military post in December.  Just reading the story gave me the feeling of "military cover-up".  1. The woman was suppose to testify to something (undisclosed)on the base. 2. It was almost a week before she was reported missing and then it was by her mother.  It seems very strange that someone from the base wouldn't have sounded the alarm sooner especially when there seem to be signs of foul play. I hope that the news media investigates this closely. Two lives are involved the woman and her unborn child.  Please don't let this just fade away.
I found it interesting that Brian commented about the pronunciation of Nevada.  I've found it interesting that many non-residents pronounce it NeVAHda, what I consider the Spanish pronunciation, as opposed to many of us in the Rocky Mountain West who pronounce it NevADDa.  Then there's ArvAHda CO or ArvAYda WY and how about Cairo (KY-ro) Egypt and Cairo (KAY-ro) IL.  Regional differences are so interesting.
how can a American get a question ask and answer by these politicians who are runing for presidend
To Brian Williams & NBC Nightly News,

You lament on how "You" got it so wrong can be blamed on many things, as I'm sure you've heard since.  But I think you need (and maybe have started already) and the rest of the "Media" need far deeper introspective searching than the few days until Nevada, and elsewhere.

When did you quit being reports and start as correspondents?  It used to be that the "reporters" reported the news and election results only after the news event or the election polls were closed.  You didn't "Make the News".  It seems to the viewers out here that the media is far more interested in being the first to poll, predict, pundit, have experts who "used to", declare winners, etc. so that you can affect results before the competition, that you've forgotten that your main responsibility is to "Report the News".  Quit telling the people, in 10 or 20 second soundbites of YOUR choice, what YOU think is important, and then who NEEDS to win and WHY.  The people that you imply are so dumb that they need this really can decide for themselves.  Report the News.....  If you think a candidate needs to be heard, or you want to let the public hear the issues. let two candidates talk to each other without a moderator for 5 or 10 minutes.  Now that will be news.  Uncensored. Unaffected by the media's biases.

This subliminal desire to "make" the news that has crept into our instant gratification world, partially created by the media, has created an information monster that you feel you must feed continuously.  Five days after Hillary got emotional we don't need constant "paralysis by analysis" on who, what. why, where, or when.  Spend that time being more introspective on YOUR responsibilities in reporting the news, and don't insist on making it.  Then, and maybe, only then, will you realize what really went wrong, and why it is assured that you will again make the same mistakes, over and over.  Give the American people some peace and quiet, and the ability to use their common sense on the issues, the candidates, the family values, etc. that are or are not important to them.  Quit affecting and start being effective and stop interjecting your (MSNBC) agenda, however minor you think it may be, into reporting the news.  Every poll you take or report affects the results, whether you like it or not....every report on tears, fears, race, religion, gender, etc. may or may not slant an opinion with your opinion.  It's not YOUR job...let the candidates handle it.  If they can handle the office, they should be able to handle getting there.

Thanks for letting me rant....and I hope that maybe it will shed some insight into "What Went Wrong".
Brian,
In the excitement of covering the 'news' of Sen. Clinton's 'comeback' (i.e., it wouldn't have been a comeback if you hadn't declared her the loser), no news programs have put up on the board the actual number of delegates that each candidate has after the first 3 states.  People might be surprised to see that winners have as many as losers.  Senator Clinton and Senator Obama received the same number of delegates (9) in New Hampshire even though she was the 'winner' and he was the 'loser.'  And what about separately chosen party and elected officials known as superdelegates? What influence do they have in the nomination?  Can they tip the scales?  The viewers have a right to be educated in the complicated process leading up to the nomination.
For Bryan Williams:  I'm 73 years old, born and raised in Nevada.  In all that time I've NEVER heard anyone who lives and works there say NevAHda.....must be one of those "Easterner things!"  Since Nightly News is going to focus on Nevada for a while now, perhaps you could make a correction to the pronunciation...   Regardless of what the language folks say!
To NBC and all news media
I am thrilled with the NH election outcome for Hillary because it proved that you GUYS had it all wrong. You and your being in bed with Obama  and promoting him to the point of discouraging people to vote is unpolitical, unpatriotic, unprofessional and mis-use of our trust in your ability to report the facts without your personal gurus commentary. You've misused your authority as "responsible, professional, unbiased news people". Its time for you all to back off, to allow the American people to cast their vote for our candidate without any meddling  from you all.  You're repeating the action of the Supreme Court of 4 years age when they took the decision away from the people. Your coverage of elections should not begin until the last polling place in Hawaii has closed. To begin within minutes of the east coast polls closing is a dis-service to those of us still standing in line to vote!!
Please , please do the right thing and back off, be respectable journalist who report facts without your own prefrences.
I will no longer watch any national election coverages until the polls in Hawaii close-then I'll either log on to the computer to read results without your bias commentaries or tune into to C-span.
Please stop predicting the outcome of elections before you know what is really happening, and stop being so critical of Hillary Clinton, she is a woman with strong beliefs in helping this country get out of the state of economics it is in, and helping get this country back on its feet from this terrible war Bush has put us in.
this is a great idea to this web site, who every thought of this desreve a raise.
I am a retired woman, so keep that in mind as you read my msg. After seeing Hillary Clinton in tears, reaffirmed my position that the office of president, especially, should not be by a woman. We all know about 'pms", hormones, etc., and know they are real, so do we want the country governed by a woman, who is subjected to a woman's emotions, hormones, etc.?
Y'know Brian, my family couldn't wait to hear what you had to say about autism last night, but it turned out to be a damp squib.
There are supposed to be 1 in 120-160 cases of autism in the USA and they all have parents and grandparents (like me), which means 5% of the population wants to know what the candidates are going to do about it...and we don't hear anything!!!
Brian, this is an issue!! I grieve for my little boy!!
It needs somebody like you to bring it out.
Thanks for anything you care to do.......Jim
Regarding your piece on Reverse Mortgages as a Baby Boomer who has first hand knowledge what choas this can cause. My mother-in- law (age 82) obtained a reverse mortgage in August 'o6 - my husband her only son asked to see the papers before she signed anything she was in NY and we in TX, but it was too late she had already signed, she received $1000.00 in Sept., Oct., Nov. and died on Nov. 28th.  After paying for her funeral and other expenses we found out we owed $24,000.00  Her closing costs were almost $20,000. plus all these ridiculous fees.  It didn't take long for us to realize this is a way for finanical instutions to obtain properties.  We paid off the loan in Oct. '07 owing almost $28,000.
Thank you for your story warning people of the pitfalls.  With slick salespeople telling the trusting elderly "we're going to take care of you"
the exact words used on my mother-in-law & the woman in your story is just criminal!
Thank you, Brian, for the timely message about reverse mortgages.  In desperation I was about to start investigating that route for my retirement future.  I have always tuned into NBC Nightly News, the morning Today Show and other quality programs on NBC.
Thank you, also, for pronouncing "Nevada" the way we native Nevadans do!
You and virtually all other correspondents and re porters have referred to Clinton's "victory," but wouldn't it be more accurate to refer to it as a 9 to 9 tie.  If Clinton leads in all remaining caucuses and primaries by 2 to 3 percentage points of votes cast, she will be ahead by many thousands of votes, but she will get to the convention trailing Obama by one delegate among all delegates chosen in this way (assuming all States apportion delegates as New Hampshire does).
Hi
I'm new here and just wanted to ask a question. I live in Fairbanks Alaska and from what I hear,by the time our few votes get to where they are going,it's basicly over. So,why should i even bother to vote? every thing is about those states in the lower 48 as we call you guy's up here. But there is quite a few people in Alaska and since we pay taxes and very high fuel prices our votes should count.
Oh,we never see Hillary come here would we.?
Thank you
Thanks for returning the entire Nightly News broadcast to the Netcast selection.  I got very frustrated watching the individual stories being presented with all of the interruptions and commercials.  I don't mind one commercial before the broadcast, if it's less than 30 seconds, because I don't like to watch the Nightly News on my local station, KNBC.  Mostly, because of all of the stupid commercials.  I started watching the netcast, when it first appeared on your website, because I could watch the entire broadcast with only a couple of interruptions for short promotions of your own programs.
So PLEASE, never take away the netcast of the entire Nightly News broadcast and NEVER add commercials, for products I DON'T want to buy, into the netcast.  I need to see the news and you have the best program with the best news anchor in the business!
Tom Costello's report on 1/9/08 indicated that an elderly
woman might lose her home as a result of a reverse mortgage.
A cornerstone of most reverse mortgages is that repayment of the debt
is not required until the debtor dies or has voluntarily left the home for
more than 1 year.   Perhaps her reverse mortgage was not the true cause
of the woman's distress.  Mention of an annuity problem complicated
the report.
I'll begin by saying that I used to like Chris Matthews and his cute child-like facial expressions.
Matthews has lost all my respect.

Today he called "Morning Joe" and tried to justify his position when he stated that Hillary won the NY senatorial race because her husband was fooling around.  How dispicable!!!!

This was not an isolated attack on Hillary.  We don't forget the horrible photos showing Hillary with horns attached to her head.  That was not necessay. That was an attack on women!!!

I had not planned to vote for Hillary, but now I not only will vote for her but will help get her votes.

Terry
I don't understand this generation of writers and or program directors. If the news isn't negative or sensational it isn't worth reporting. You seem to take delight in reporting a possible recession! There's no doubt the housing industry is down & the banking industry is paying for some of it's mistakes in lending but I have plenty of stories here in the mid-west that would tell us the economy is strong. Try thinking positive for awhile & have a good day !!!
The same thing should be done for Dateline's web site. If you're not going to air Dateline on TV, why not make it "web only" ? It hasnt been on since October 07. Bring it back... and make it's web site like Nightly News' site. Great job!! I love the NN show!! Brian Williams is one of my favs!!

NBC News FTW!!
Why is it the Clintons are the topic of your news whether she is winning or losing??? Always clips of her and her fake smile.  I thought the news programs were to be bias with reporting the news instead of promoting and that all of the candidates got their free air time also.  There are people in this country wanting to hear from them also.  Wake up you news people.  The other candidates just may have something to give to the "undecited voters" if you gave them as much air time as you do what's her name.
I love the new a la carte version of the news!

Can we have a 'broadband' version with a higher bitrate (better image quality), please?  Going from 32" tv to 4" online is painful.
I must say that of all the news people in America I was glad it was Brian Williams who stepped up and said that reporters screw up. A certain former CBS reporter (no names mentioned) could of saved himself a lot of trouble and humiliation had he learned that lesson (and to check out sources even family ones)a long time ago. I saw you at Green Bay  when my family treated me to a surprise visit there. Going on that pilgrimage was the greatest moment of my life but seeing you was an extra high light. I always thought of you as one of the better and least bias reporters and it is nice to see you are humble too. thank you Lynn Hunt
