Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Netcast viewers: we hear you

Posted: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 5:15 PM by Barbara Raab

By Alexandra Wallace, executive producer

We received a lot of positive emails and blog comments about our new and improved home of Nightly News on the Web. But we also heard from many of our loyal netcast viewers, who were desperately seeking their preferred method of watching our broadcast.

We hear you. The netcast is back. Here's how to find it on our redesigned site:

On the far left side of our home page, under "Video," click on or scroll over the word "Previously," and select the option, "As broadcast" (see image below). That's it.

Please bear in mind that tonight's netcast may be slightly delayed due to the volume of political news from New Hampshire, but it will be there -- we promise. Thanks for your patience and your feedback -- and thank you for watching Nightly News.

Thanks...and FYI you have to click "as broadcast."
Dear Alexandra, I am a loyal viewer of NBC Nightly News and I always post every evening on the Daily Nightly. Also on World Blog. I like the new NBC Nightly News Website and I have experienced no problems with the video. It comes in clear and the picture is great. Thank you for all the great reporting from NBC Nightly News! Mr.Williams and all the correspondents. Especially my favorite correspondent! Thank you and I will keep watching and posting! Peace to all!
I have always watched ABC news and after Peter Jennings died, I went on the search for a new nightly news program.  I am now a loyal watcher of Nightly News.  It is so refreshing to see a newscaster who actually cares  about the people in the stories he reports on for the news.  I watched him after the report on the tornados in Wisconsin today, and his face showed exactly what I was feeling when the little girl disolved into tears when asked about the tornado.  You have made a fabulous choice in a newscaster and I hope to see him on the air for many years to come.
Thank you very much Alex and everyone else who had influence on bringing the Netcast back.
It's ok. I still don't like how the video auto starts when you log on. I just come to this page to see the Daily nightly blog. I hate that it starts up each time. Hardly good for being at work! :-)
Brian, Brian Brian!!  I am a loyal watcher of King 5 out of Seattle.  To have given Macain ALL THAT TIME on your newscast...  bad on you.  I know the Dems are in a tight race and there was noone to give the time to yet, but Macain's almost total acceptance speech should not have been dominating your broadcast. A newsbite would have been sufficient.   Now You had better give equal time to the Dem winner or both Hil and Bor.
Thank you so much for bring the netcast back! Wow, only had to wait one night! For us folks who like to just sit back and listen to Brian as he brings the news straight to us, it was very disheartening to have to scroll down and 'pick' the news we wanted to hear about! I guess it is good to have those options, but until our computer has a remote control, we like it as a netcast! Thanks for listening!
As usual for me anything new is scary but I'll deal with it.
Thank you! I'm an American living in Switzerland and NBC Nightly News is my first morning news each day. I'm glad you have the webcast available again in the original format!
I really am not happy with the changes - and what is up with the site freezing and being slower than slow? This has nothing to do with "just getting used to it" - the user interface in horrible. Too much ...much to much in way of navigation.
LOVE THE NEW SET UP!!! WAY TO BE INNOVATIVE AND AND ON THE BALL.  YOUR SET UP IS GREAT.  I'LL ADD SOME MORE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM LATER AFTER I'VE SPENT MORE TIME ON IT....BUT THIS IS EXCELLENT!!! YOU GUYS ARE AHEAD OF THE REST RIGHT NOW!!
I don't come here to watch ads when I click on a video. Why on earth do I have to watch a commercial about Crest White Strips when I'm trying to get the news? Put ads off to the side and make them opt in.
Brian,
Could you investigate how much the so called Iranian gunship 'story' effected the voters in New Hampshire?
If a gunship were saying "you're gonna blow up"....and we didn't respond with precise force in a split second....and coincidentally right before a presidential primary causing the poll numbers to be so far off....don't you think it's worth asking "How did the Iranian gunship threat effect your vote"?
One person's perspective on The recient news about Hillary Clinton showing emotion and tearing up. I am not a Hillary fan, however I think it was the most human and authantic moment of her public life.It gave us a rare snap shot of her heart. Hats off to you Hillary. please forward to Brian Willams. Thank You
Politics - People should view all the candidate's history of voting and other contributions to the world and then choose their candidate.  It is easy to view the candidate's performance and what they REALLY supported instead of the TV politics.

I am an over 50 female who will not vote for nationality or gender.  Just because the candidate is your personal gender or nationality does not mean they support your view.

Please choose your candidate according to their past performance or lack thereof.
I tried to sign up to blog, filled in all the blanks- Kept getting a message saying they needed the information. It was all filled in--all of it. It did not even recognize that I had entered anything
the 8th of January Brian Williams spent 15 minutes talking about the politicians and who was going to win etc. He spent only 3 minutes talking about the killer tornadoes in the midwest. I think he has to get his priorities straight. After all the elections are 10 months away. By the way we had 43 confirmed sightings of tornadoes in 15 hours. Spent more time with the public and let the politicians do their own thing.
To Brian Williams
Yeah!  Finally an article with no negative inuendos about Hilary Clinton, or her husband (which has gotten so old) Instead you gave wonderful insight as to how we all had how and why she won this primary. Maybe it's time the news stop treating them so badly and let their words speak for themselves and let us voters decide. Oh for the record, I'm a registered republican, but have never agreed with how the media has covered the Clintons.  Thou shall not cast a stone!
Yes Bill & Hillary "Fairy Tale We won New Hampshire " Will very soon become their nightmare. For All Black women regardless of culture / ethnicity Insults to Barack is taken personally. I use to adore these too , now the contempt and loathing is like a physical pain + Jon Martin & Bobby gave their lives for Civil rights. & Hillary says all Martin made were " Pretty speeches " & Credit Racist & who may have had if not John Bobby killed with the Civil rights laws / progress. Hell is too good for thses two.

I am really pleased to see the netcast back, but is it my imagination or was it not as seamless as the previous version.  I used to be able to watch the netcast on my laptop with no stops or stutters - the Tuesday evening broadcast seemed to run for 5-10 seconds and then have to stop for a breather - it didn't seem to cache at all.  Did anyone else experience that?
How do I turn on the closed captions for the web video content?  I need it to understand the words.
Thankyou, I am glad netcast is back. Congratulations to everyone who has done the new Nightly News Web, you`ve done an excellent job.
The mean hearted attacks on Hillary Clinton by the media showed the world that the media will do anything to keep a most qualified woman from the presidency.

Her record during her 35 years speaks for itself.  Experience is essential to lead the country effectively.

Obama is young, attractive and a great orator with 2 years in Washington.  What a frightening thought to have him run our country.... at this time.

Shame on the many "talking heads" who used the power to try to destroy Hillary.  They made us sick and propelled us to action.  Women need to be respected!
Brian/Tim,

I was so glad to see that you basically owned up to last night's debacle. While I watch both your shows religiously, I was practically yelling at the t.v., I am a huge fan. However, just for the record and for the next time you poll independents...I am 1) a woman, 2) single, 3) under 50, 4) registered as an independent and I am NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM for Obama. I am 100% backing Hillary Clinton. Stop assuming based on certain criteria that everyone is in the same boat. We are not and New Hampshire proved it. Please remember that next week and into the future. We won't know until we know who the nominees in both parties will be. Let's all learn to be a bit more patient and let the process proceed.
I am from Western New York and am not as Hillary fan as she has done nothing for us.  Her show of emotion last night reminded me of the old adage a woman can get what she wants by crying.  I really don't think Margaret Thatcher or Golda Maier would really cry if things weren't going their way.  Do we really thing the leaders of the world are going to be swayed by tears?  I'm surprised at NH for falling for such tactics.
I must say be come away from the nightly news more and more disappointed.
I really don't care what your news studio looks like, either in New York, LA or Nevada. It has no place on a newscast. It is not news. I don't want to hear what the updates to your website. I don't want entertainment news.
I want the real news. As you describe: indepth.
I remember when you did  a segment on people who make a difference. It was about a teacher. The main message was to expect more from the students. They will perform to expectations.
How I wish the newscast was similiar. Expect the American people to grasp issues and provide us with more than the a brief touch upon issues. More international news as well. I want to know more about what happens in the world. Challenge me to come away from the news thoughful. Not entertained.
I don't care if Hillary is a woman, if she does or does not have emotion, or what color she is.  What scares me is her socialistic values and what she will do if she gets in.  She treats her servents badly.  If she isn't nice to the people who work for her and guard her life, how could she possibly care about the rest of us.
There was absolutely NO surprise on Hillary's win in NH , with her big loss in Iowa, she had no choice but to pull out the 'tear jerking' as a last resort. The fact that it swayed so many and worked exactly like she wanted is in itself a very sad influencing of so many Americans and puts the emotions of such a person looking to head this country and  this world in a control position...is very scary !!!!!!!
It's difficult to believe, but you still don't get it.  First the media radically blows predictions and now they obviously can't understand that Hillary's behavior, either bent masculine or feminine has nothing to do with whether she is suited to becoming president.  What voters should be looking for is someone who can stand up, with good character and be strong in spite of whatever comes along.  Let's have more emphasis on things of importance.
Maybe the reason the media picked the wrong winner is because the media was going by the votes of the people instead of the plans of those that build, program and repair the machines that count the votes.
The most beautiful thing about last night's election results was watching Chjris Matthews stutter and stammer through his post-election comments and EATING ALL THAT CROW!
I disliked the question on likeability asked by the moderator during the New Hampshire Democratic debate, but I liked Barrack Obama's response to Hillary Clinton's when he stated that she was "likeable enough" in a condescending and almost rude tone.  She at least stated that yes he was very likeable.  I had a high degree of respect for Mr. Obama until that moment and one which was a defining moment for me.  I would no longer vote for Mr. Obama, although until that moment I liked his freshness, his youth, and his message of change.
I can't believe the voters of New Hampshire fell for Hillarys act.Hillary should have won there because the affluent don't want change they want status quo.Why hasn't anyone questioned her record and brought out the facts about the Black Panthers or her lousey job with health care when her husband was President?
The new site is TOO SLOW.  It took way too long for the videos to load and I have high speed internet.  I would hate to be on this site using a slower connection or computer.
Brian, Tim, Chris, etc.,

Your treatment of John McCain's acceptance speech was disgraceful.  Who are you to discredit an American Hero for reading a prepared speech?  I am a Democrat but have always respected McCain and his outstanding contribution to this country.  Allowing Mike Barnicle to become part of this adds to your lack of creditability.  Only Tom Brokaw continues to maintain his reputation as a distinguished journalist as he tried to correct the commentary you presented.  Hopefully in the future he will distance himself from the rest of you.
Dear Brian,
We hear daily all the bad news about war and hatred in our world. When you are looking for some GOOD news, why not tell about the good being accomplished by Douglas Johnston President and Founder of the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy.  He would be a great Sec. of State after 8 years of work creating a vibrant force for peace. His hands-on experience in the political/military arena coupled with his genius in work on preventive diplomacy has succeeded in making especially Muslim and Christian leaders come to great understanding and nonviolent solutions. Thanks for looking him up.
The primaries seem to go on forever. What I would like to see is a national one day primary and a much shortened political campaign.
The Television Media was instrumental in helping Hilary to win NH. All the main networks showed Hilary getting upset and starting to cry without showing her subsequent attack on Barack Obama. When you see the entire clip you begin to question how sincere Hilary's emotions really are.
Luckily for the Clinton campaign - most of the broadcast media is willing to censor that part of her performance which makes the entire episode seem questionable.
Why doesn't the Media ask Senator Clinton about her involvement with Norman Hsu and her husband's pardoning of Mark Rich ? How can she be a change when she is part of the problem and up to her neck in milking this corrupt system ?  The Media should provide viewers with the full story not just selected clips. In cutting the full clip of Hilary Clinton and thereby showing her in only a positive light perhaps the media have let viewers down once again.

Please, please go back to being reporters, people who report the news, not people who try to make the news fit what they think is going to happen.

I am so disgusted with the networks and their smug "reporting"!

Just tell us the facts and let us form our own opinions.

Thanks,
Julia
PS, I used to like Hardball, but Chris Matthew's rants against Hillary Clinton have sure turned me off.  I refuse to watch Hardball now.

As I watched the primary results reported last night, I couldn't help but notice that all of the mainstream media representatives stayed away from mentioning the obvious, Barack Obama failed to win New Hampshire, in spite of polling results showing a 10 point lead, because he is black.  I'm a white male who likes to think the country has come a long way in matters of race relations during the past 40 plus years.  But we are still asking the question: " Can a black person be elected president?"  The fact that the question gets asked at all provides the truth of the issue - the nation has a long way to go until we truly judge candidates based on their intelligence and capabilities to lead and not on the color of their skin or whether they scowl, smile or cry.
I hope that more people (voters) are as astute as Jerrie DeRose of Hutchinson, Kansas to pick up on Obama's condescending remark to Hillary during the debate.  The remark opens a window to the real character of him as a man.
Your reporting on the defective chromosome that affects .5% of Autistic children.
How about heavy metals that are found in most of the Autistic children. Why don't we test children for heavy metals instead of of just lead.

Heavy metals found in children 1-5 can be treated with DMSA and Liporic acid and the Autism can be treated.
Brian/Tim:
Meet the Press and The Nightly News with you, Brian Williams, are my TV selections of choice and, they will continue to be so however, please, please do not be flabbergasted, or shocked to understand what took place in New Hampshire. I truly believe the media continues to want to be in the business of "Making the News" rather than reporting it.  I believe the voters in New Hampshire was simply being obstinent and "showing you" that they were not going to take "your lead" and vote for Obama simply because the media stated he was to be the winner before any voting took place.  Please, please, as a loyal viewer, refrain from saying what "you think" but, report what you know.  Give the candidates a chance to make or break their move to the White House.  Don't you do it for them.
Though will take some getting used to, I like the new site, but one correction from NH.MSNBC/NBC kept saying that women voters left Obama for Clinton from Iowa to New Hampshire. At the same time, your own information on screen showed the percentage of women voters went from 35-34,esentially ,no change. The real change was women voters left Edwards for Clinton. Your num bers showed it clearly, but you kept referring to Obama losin g support.Don't get too focused on a 2 person race.Just cover the facts .
Brian, We usually watch your newscast and I am sorry to say most of your reporting is very pro-democratic based, very little time is given to the Republican candidates. This shows many Americans are correct that the media is biased in their reporting, I thought that you would be different.
Brian,
As a loyal veiwer of Nightly News, I was truly dissapointed that there was no mention of the BCS Championship with LSU taking the title. Most interesting was that everyone who attended the game in New Orleans seem to have had a great and safe experience. I know that you have kept us in the back of your mind by doing reports here now and then, but I truly believe you dropped the ball on this one. I understand how important the election is and do appreciate the coverage, but that's not the only game in town.
I wonder how many of your viewers have commented on the the load of prescription drug commercials airing during your program and ALL the other national news programs in your time frame. When I switch to another news channel during your drug commercial I get a similar, or the same, drug commercial. I guess it speaks well for your "numbers" when you can get their budget dollars.
We've "Come a Long Way, Baby!!" But, Hillary, take it all the way for us...Women of America...the ball is in your court...
