ABOUT THIS BLOG

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Nightly News escapes your television

Welcome to the home of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams on the Web. Many of you who visit here often know we're not totally brand new, but we are bigger and better than ever. Brian and I and the entire Nightly News team are excited to bring you an historic expansion of the quality journalism and storytelling you've come to expect from Nightly News, and what we hope you will agree is an enhanced and improved user experience.

The first thing you will notice is the way we've made Nightly News video the centerpiece -- we are, after all, in the business of telling stories with pictures. Not only do we have more video offerings than ever before (more on that in a moment), but our new video player makes every video crisper and cleaner than it's ever been. (Some of you may need to download the latest Adobe Flash player to watch the videos. Click here for more on how to do that.)

Brian, of course, is central to Nightly News on the Web, and he guides what we do here just as he does on the broadcast. You will see his video welcome message when you log onto our site today; he'll have a new video message every day. He'll also continue to write his blog at DailyNightly, and our Web site will always be your first stop for video of Brian's other projects.

About those additional videos I mentioned: we'll continue to have a wealth of material that complements the reports seen on the broadcast edition of Nightly News -- extended interviews, additional story angles, etc.-- and we'll also have more of what we call "Web Exclusives":  stories we report and present only on the Web. Check out, for example, the Web Exclusives by our Digital Correspondent Mara Schiavocampo. Also, you'll find more related links and additional resources for all of our stories, and more opportunities to interact with Nightly News and to give us feedback on our stories (as you watch selected videos, for example, you may see a link to Newsvine, an outlet for real-time discussion about the story you've just seen).

Our new site is better organized and easier than ever to navigate. We'll put our video offerings in order for you each day, but for those of you who prefer to create your own video playlists, you have that option as well. For our loyal Netcast viewers, this program should be a better experience. But if you prefer to see the entire broadcast just as it aired, you can subscribe to our podcast here.

One last thing: we've also improved the daily newsletter we send out each weekday afternoon that previews some of the stories and special reports coming up on the Nightly News broadcast. If you're not currently receiving the newsletter, click here to sign up.

Again, welcome to the new nightly.msnbc.com -- enjoy!

Editor's note: A lot of you wrote us and asked about the netcast. You should now find it accessible from the redesigned site. For more on that, click on this link.

WHY take away the Nightly News Netcast???  This isn't an "improvement."  I work evenings and watch NBC News when I get home or the next morning.  Isn't NBC interested in viewers like me?  I guess I'll have to get my news somewhere else.  I'd just like to know WHY this decision was made by NBC.
Google RON PAUL.  Why is there no news about Texas Congressman Ron Paul.  This is a perfect example of mass media controling what you think and limiting your choices.  The mass media is stifling the real voice of America.

Congressman RON PAUL is the fastest rising cantidate in either party.  He has raised records amounts of money from supporters in the past 3 months.  Google Ron Paul!!!!!
Please, for heaven's sake, bring back one single link that takes us to the netcast!!  Is that too much to ask?
This site SUCKS! you had a good site and you screwed it up. I just want to view last nights broadcast, but no you had to try out this BETA software that DOES NOT WORK. Please fire the clowns that keep making it worse and go back to wha you had!

Hey Netcast lovers -- we hear you. Stay tuned.

For now, you can get last night's show by clicking on http://podcast.msnbc.com and clicking on the WMV link under 'Nightly News.'

I like it. It looks good. But I, too, would like the one single link to the netcast.
I like this revamped site very much.  So many news websites are so cluttered  with podcast, video and print that it is overwhelming.  It comes down to this: Broadcasters know how to pair image with narrative, and print journalists are able to conjure an image using words.  I'm glad that Nightly News seems to understand that they are good at the former.  Please don't do what CNN did and cross over into print journalism.  I'll go to the newspaper sites when I want to read.  Kudos to your team emphasizing what you do best, which is broadcast
I live in Germany and thus do not have any access to American newscasts. The netcast has been my window on America. I am deeply disappointed that I am no longer able to watch the show in its entirety. Bring it back!
I went just now to the web site you have been describing instead of going to the Daily Nightly web site as I always have done, and I discovered why you are touting this "new and improved" site...it is full of advertisements!  Even the automatic daily video greeting from Mr. Williams turns into an advertisement and before I could read the items to the left of the video screen that section turned into an advertisement too!  So now I understand that all this "new and improved" hype is just to get us to watch your revenue producing adds and taking the broadcast stream off the site was obviously of no importance to you.  Are those of you who create and modify this web site (not the content)in the news division or are you in sales and mandated to be contributing to the GE bottom line?  That is a serious question and I am honestly curious to learn the answer.

I think I will just continue to go directly to the daily nightly site @dailynightly.msnbc.msn.com and skip the new and improved advertisements site unless the time comes when I will have to go there to see the nightly broadcast.
I am an Independent/democrat who strongly leaned towards Obama until your Chris Matthews from Hardball bagan to repulse me with the old media attacks against the Clintons...maybe he doesn't realise how much moral disgust this old stink generates in those familiar with the press and what it did to the Clintons and what with much greater reason it refused to do to the morally and patriotically repulsive with good reason Bushies! We are so sick of you sir and your Biased remarks we might be inclined to vote Clinton just to make a statement to the world of just how ignorant and morally journalistically repulsive we find you. The only folk informedAmerica finds more yuckie than the Bushies are the "journalists" who made their damage to this or beloved country possible.
You can't understand why Hillary won?  America is sick of the corporate arrogant ignorant media dictating to America what they think in the most unjust, biased and ugly way.  I wanted Obama until your newsmen journalist reporters made me want to vomit at your biased injustice. America remembers your TVS 24/7 Clinton attacks OVER SEX for gods sake and then to see your Bushie pandering despite his near destruction of our nation AND ITS VALUES...for you to start attacking a Clinton again repulses any and every decent American. I was gleeful to see your hardball moran eat his words! ( And I had just told my daughter I was pRo ObAMA! )

is this not the best election year ever?  it's down right exciting ?
when will the news media learn 40 peopl;e are polled and then another 40 do the voting. I am 77 years old and learned polls dont mean crap.
From a former Nightly.MSNBC.com editor, kudos! The primacy of the video is excellent, as is the quality. It's a welcome re-imagining of what the broadcast can be for a Web audience. Keep offering viewers what they want and enticing them with truly worthwhile Web-extras.
I am really excited with this up-grade and looking forward to being able to review videos and comments from the Nightly News! I love big political years like this one and will hang on every word. Thank you for this expansion.
Mr. Williams:
You and other members of the media in the United States have redifined "news analysis" to reflect your beliefs.  This was stridently evident in your most recent newscasts leading to the primaries in New Hampshire.  You have a duty to the people you serve to remain unbiased.  Your flagrant disregard for this precept of journalism is arrogant and manipulative.
I have watched Chris Mathew's show for years. I quit watching it a few days ago. I have never heard him say a nice word about Clinton. Always bashing her. I did go back to msnbc today. Ever guest on all the shows have starting playing the race card. Include the host on the show. Kinda early for that. Is there a chance you could give her any credit for winning. I am a Democrat and would have voted for Obama if he wins. I will stay at home now if he wins for the first time in 55 years.  You keep playing the race card and it could get get real bad. You are going to set this country back several years before this election is over.  Will it be race if in South Carolina if 90% of the blacks vote for Obama? What happened to the balance? Keith Overman coverd both sides and said no way it was race. I will keep watching his show. He tells it like it is on both sides. I think it is going to get ugaly. I look for tomorrow to be the same old thing. I will not turn my TV on msnbc I am impressed with Obama and think he could make a good President. ( please don't start another war between the States.) Right now it looks like it is headed that way. You played a big part in Clinton winning NH.
I'm a person who watches the nightly broadcast on TV every night and uses the website as a supplemental source of info, and from my perspective, this new site design is slimmer, sleeker and much better organized than the previous version.

I like the fact that there is material which expands and compliments the stories featured on the broadcast.

I trust Brian Williams as I trusted Tom Brokaw and the entire NBC News team I've grown up watching.  I'm happy to have an outlet like this site, the videos, the blogs which all help to enrich and enhance the viewer's experience and make it a lot more interactive.
It was really good to finally hear you get your hands slapped for almost omitting the Republicans from the Presidential race reports.  It seems the 3 major networks think only Democratic information qualifies as news.  Sorry, but you are wrong.  I am old enough to remember when nightly news reports gave the news - whether it was Democratic or Republican.  I miss it and wish it could come back.
Does the media think no one in the U.S. is smart enough to listen to the candidates and decide for themselves what they said?  We listen to speeches and debates and then someone else comes on and tells us in their opinion what was said.  Why not let me decide for myself?  Then you start giving election results before everyone has voted.  I think the news media  unfairly influences the voters and just puts forth their own opinion.  We would have never won WWI or WWII if we had the technology we have today and everyone new what was going on before it happened.  Give us all a break and recognize we have a few brains and know how to think for ourselves.  Report the news and not your opinion.  Thank you for allowing me to present my thoughts.
I have nothing negative to say. However; just a comment to Tim Russert:  You're a wonderful newscaster and I know we all get busy but please, get a haircut!
Why is it when Tim Russert is introduced it is "Washington Bureau Chief and Moderator of Meet the Press. I get tired of hearing that. Does he require everyone to address him that way. Can't you just say Host of Meet the Press and forget the Washington Bureau Chief. Nobody even knows what that is anyway and everyone that watches NBC knows who Tim Russert is.
Dear Ms. Wallace,

I would like to congratulate you and your team for putting this much improved website, I have been accesing your site everytime i miss the nightly news. Keep up the good work.
I have the perfect question to ask the presidential candidates, but first you have to get my account opened up again with Newsvine - Raymonty.
Brian,Tim and Alexandra

How could anyone hate a person as much as he does? Where is the balance, I did go back to msnbc today just to see what was going on. . I am a Democrat and would have voted for Obama if he wins the primary. Now I guess I will stay home for the first time in 55 years. Sorry Obama They cost you a vote. I like Obama and think he would make a good President.

Will it be race if most of the black people vote for Obama?  (You know that could happen .)  This could get ugly.
In regards to the Nevada Primary Debates.  I am appalled by the way NBC and GE handled the attempt to remove Kucinich for the Nevada Primary Debate.  The "uninvite" was a blatant show of censorship and "self-interest" on the part of GE.  I am glad that the Honorable Judge Thompson agrees.  I expect better from you--as a reporter and a citizen--and the companies you work for.  I expect this outrage to be raised during the debate.  Uninformed citizens of this country deserve to know that NBC is not unbiased.  They deserve to know that it is looking after it's own interest before that of the American people.  NBC and GE owe Kucinich and the American people a formal apology.

I, for one, will never watch and NBC/GE station ever again.  I hope others follow suit and it hurts the companies bottom-line.

Sincerely,

A disenchanted viewer

I sent a question regarding the involvement of Chavez in Petro Express and forgot to include my email address.

Thanks!
After announcing a truce about the race and gender issues, both NBC anchors kept the discussion about that for almost 30 minutes. I want to find out the difference in the candidates plans when they take office. I am glad that Brian Williams asked Obama about the email lies. I have been bombarded with them also.
I want to thank you for the Democratic Debate from Las Vegas on Tuesday night it was very infomative.  There is one question I wish would have been asked these candidates.  How are they going to pay for all of these programs they are proposing?  No one seems to want to ask this question. With an economy that is getting worse and a war defecit that is staggering will someone please ask that question.
I enjoy watching you news casts but believe you are missing some key stories.  The congress/president recently awarded the Medal of Honor to a soldier yet you did not report this event.  If you support the troops as you say you do, then these stories should always be covered and broadcasted.  These young men and women are receiving the nation's highest honor, often posthumously, yet it is never reported.  I think you do them, their families and the nation a dishonor for not reporting these events.
I'm hoping that this email actually gets to Anne Thompson or Brian Williams.  I saw this piece last February shortly after my mother was diagnosed with an Autoimmune disease.  My father is a WWII veteran.  I passed this information on to him and he said he checked into it and was told he was not eligible.  Basically I let it drop until now.  My mother has had a rough year with her disease and has now fractured her sacrum.  She has to have complete bed rest and needs to have a nurse come to the house to get her up and help her move everyday so that she doesn't develop blood clots or bed sores.  Medicare will pay for one hour of nursing care a day.

When I called the VA to find out about my parents eligibility I was told that unless my father was disabled my mother was not entitled to any benefit.  The way your story was presented there was no mention whatsoever pertaining to the veteran being the one who was disabled!  When I told the person I was speaking to this she said that they had no control over the way stories were represented on television and that the program did not tell the story properly!  This I find not only appalling I am sincerely disappointed that my father served this country during the war and he's not entitled to any help that is there for this purpose and would relieve some of the burden on him for the care for my mother.  Thank you, Janice Lentz
I appreciate the new format for the debates that we saw last evening between the Democratic candidates. Please continue to focus on the issues, and followup on those issues. The beginning of last nights debate was NOT what most people want to hear...focus on the TV talk show topics that are not relevant....Tim Russert  and Brian were not impressive in the first segment. They were focusing on trivialities and gossip type comments. The remaining 2 sections of the debate greatly improved in quality when issues were discussed. This is what people want to hear. Let the talking heads babble all they want about inferences we want to hear the individuals discuss specifics; ie: how and when do we leave Iraq, what is to be done to correct the deficit created by the conflict,  and healtcare availability and how costs impact US in competitive markets,  plans for protecting/improving the enviornment, what can be done to strengthen our volunteer military -to name a few primary concerns I hear questioned frequently in converstations. PLEASE address the issues and do not focus on the trivial and unimportant. During the last 2 elections we discussed endlessly questions of morals and values that were inappropriate for a presidential debate. We did not get any specifics as to what the president felt about the issues, only generalities. We cannot afford to make that mistake again.
Please continue with more interation and discussion of issues and follow through on comments which will provide the audience with needed insights.

I need a question answered-- Is it true the US does not keep the oil from Alaska, but instead sells it to Japan??
Now that there is a consensus on the pronunciation of "Nevada", how 'bout we raise the bar and tackle the city of Nevada, Missouri, and when we resolve that, move on to Arkansas City, Kansas.  I think everyone should have a vote on the pronunciation, regardless of political affiliation, voter registration, national origin, or criminal history!--Judy Olander, Topeka KS

P.S.  This is the first time I've tried to e-mail a comment to the Nightly News staff.  I was stymied at 'most every turn on your website, but since I'm a regular viewer on the TV rather than the PC, can't really comment on the fuss about the website other than it was a real pain in the rear to work through.
I missed the Nightly News segment when the name of the 'new' man who introduces Brian Williams was revealed.  I recognize the voice but can't place his name.  Who is it?
Could you ask NBC/Chicago not to cut off the last of the Nightly News? The last two nights that I know of Brian's sign-off has been cut off with the lead-in of the local news. His sign-off is that little bit of comfort I look forward to. I will email Chicago too, but this is fine tuning we need. Thanks.
Last night when you signed off the Nightly News we were shown Rockefeller Center with the snow falling and the trees covered with twinkling lights. What a beautiful way to end your program. I know people back east think snow, here we go again, but for people from South Texas the site is lovely. So many people here don't see snow but once a decade and some of the children here have never seen it. So keep up the good work and thanks for sharing a snowy evening.
Dear Brian:

Would you please explain to me why, every night, there appears a shot of the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange with the assembled crew at the dais clapping their hands, smiling broadly, and often acting as if they are totally unaware that the market has just lost a fortune. Why is there such a disconnect and who chooses those people who are there in the first place?
Secondly, it is possible that the Alexandra Wallace, who is on your news staff, was in my 7th grade at National Cathedral School in Washington?
In Tom Brokaw's interview of former President Bill Clinton on Nightly News, Mr. Clinton shares a narrative about Hillary Clinton dedicating  her life to Civil Rights causes after hearing a speech by Martin Luther King in Chicago in 1963. He omits the fact that Mrs. Clinton campaigned for Barry Goldwater in 1964. Goldwater was one of the only Republicans to cross party lines to oppose the Civil Rights Act. Why omit this from the narrative?
Thank you, thank you, thank you for finally changing
the sign-off pictures.  That picture of the capitol
building in Iowa was beautiful and I've enjoyed the
scenes shown in New York.  I wanted to write earlier,
but I couldn't find a "contact us" website.
I would like to inform you that OBAMA is a Muslim & would not be a good AMERICAN President-with his loyalty with his allah- he would bring down our country within months of taking office. That is why he is talking about CHANGE-- change from our way of living & working to something that our country & people would be highly offended! Thank You
Please provide alternate to Adobe Flash player.
If this is all you support, I won't be watching your reports.
Why has NBC Nightly News abandoned its overseas viewers (on CNBC)???? How much Squawk Box do you think we can stand? Please don't force us to switch to Fox News for news from the U.S.!!!

I plan to watch the Republican debates tonight.
I can tell you now what these Republicans will say.
I am going to get Ben Laden. I am going to put judges on the Supreme Court that will put these women in their place.
I will get rid of those gay people.
I will sure cut your taxes.
