ABOUT THIS BLOG

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Nightly News escapes your television

Welcome to the home of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams on the Web. Many of you who visit here often know we're not totally brand new, but we are bigger and better than ever. Brian and I and the entire Nightly News team are excited to bring you an historic expansion of the quality journalism and storytelling you've come to expect from Nightly News, and what we hope you will agree is an enhanced and improved user experience.

The first thing you will notice is the way we've made Nightly News video the centerpiece -- we are, after all, in the business of telling stories with pictures. Not only do we have more video offerings than ever before (more on that in a moment), but our new video player makes every video crisper and cleaner than it's ever been. (Some of you may need to download the latest Adobe Flash player to watch the videos. Click here for more on how to do that.)

Brian, of course, is central to Nightly News on the Web, and he guides what we do here just as he does on the broadcast. You will see his video welcome message when you log onto our site today; he'll have a new video message every day. He'll also continue to write his blog at DailyNightly, and our Web site will always be your first stop for video of Brian's other projects.

About those additional videos I mentioned: we'll continue to have a wealth of material that complements the reports seen on the broadcast edition of Nightly News -- extended interviews, additional story angles, etc.-- and we'll also have more of what we call "Web Exclusives":  stories we report and present only on the Web. Check out, for example, the Web Exclusives by our Digital Correspondent Mara Schiavocampo. Also, you'll find more related links and additional resources for all of our stories, and more opportunities to interact with Nightly News and to give us feedback on our stories (as you watch selected videos, for example, you may see a link to Newsvine, an outlet for real-time discussion about the story you've just seen).

Our new site is better organized and easier than ever to navigate. We'll put our video offerings in order for you each day, but for those of you who prefer to create your own video playlists, you have that option as well. For our loyal Netcast viewers, this program should be a better experience. But if you prefer to see the entire broadcast just as it aired, you can subscribe to our podcast here.

One last thing: we've also improved the daily newsletter we send out each weekday afternoon that previews some of the stories and special reports coming up on the Nightly News broadcast. If you're not currently receiving the newsletter, click here to sign up.

Again, welcome to the new nightly.msnbc.com -- enjoy!

Editor's note: A lot of you wrote us and asked about the netcast. You should now find it accessible from the redesigned site. For more on that, click on this link.

I think NBC News was unfair to run an extended interview with a single candidate the night before the New Hampshire Primary. A news organization should be neutral at that time. Was this news or exploitation?
A minute ago my comment was posted and now it is gone!  I am trying to tell you that everything you are describing is not here to see.  I am logged onto dailynightly.msnbc.msn.com like every other day since this site started (I keep the address in my favorites)and there is nothing new to see here.  Is there some new web address that you failed to mention where these new things can be seen now, today, or are you describing changes which will happen to Mr. Williams' web site tomorrow?  Please don't just remove my comments.  I can't be the only one who thinks this is mixed up on your end.
I wanted live streaming video.

Oh well.
Near the beginning of the show, they mentioned that the New Hampshire primary was the second political contest in the nation.  Is there any reason why the media is ignoring last Saturday's Wyoming Republican Caucus?
Rich from Texas -- check http://nightly.msnbc.com That's the Nightly News home page, you're looking at the Daily Nightly blog.
Death penalty, cruel inhumane ? ask the little girl that was rapped and dismembered ,if that was cruel and unusual punishment, the old woman beaten to death for 20 dollars did she get a last request ,a steak dinner ? Isn't it punishment for killing another, isn't the reason for the death penalty,to deter this type of behavior,if it isn't then it's called revenge .I hope it's cruel! and inhumane these people that commit these terrible crimes should be treated the same way their victims were
I have always watched NBC news. With the coverage that has occurred prior to the Iowa Caucus to the present...the night before the NH primary, I am very disappointed in NBC news. Whether it is with Brian or the other news analysts, I am extremely disappointed. I am an independent voter; however, I lean toward Democratic platforms. I live in Illinois. I can't say, yet, as to which candidate I support.

What I have noticed is the 'sexist' approach to how the Democratic nomination has been covered. It appears to me that the male candidates can critize Clinton's opinion, her response to the criticisms, her approach to comparing her position to the others. However when she points out how the other candidates are flipping on positions, how they have not communicated or provided a clear description on what they will do in office, nothing is stated...no mention that the other candidates have not answered the question....that they too are waffling.

I am still uncertain on how to vote but I can assure you, NBC has truly disappointed me in their fairness in covering this election.

I personally thought Clinton did an outstanding job on the NH debate. She gave more direct answers then the male contenders....but this goes unrecognized.
The new publication (Science, Evolution, and Creationism) apparently falsely equates "intelligent design" with "creationism".   It appears to want to lump together the concepts of microevolution with macroevolution.  What are they thinking?  They’re not.

The National Academy of Sciences is missing the point.  If you look at Darwin and what he proposed, it is very obvious that he got very little right.  In fact Darwinism is more of an intelligent lie, than a theory that contains facts.  The holes in Darwin’s theory are so loosely tied, it is no wonder that science today is still not able to do the things it wants, because God did create and by the way, still creates.  In fact he did create you and them whether you wish to accept it or not.

As science has stated in the past, that it took millions and millions of years to create species or even the planet, you only have to look at the Mt Saint Helens disaster in 1980 to understand that change took place in seconds.  And yet, no scientific community will stand up and acknowledge that they got geology creation wrong.

To deny God is an option anyone can take, however the consequences to this can be insurmountable.

Science would be Light Years ahead, if Scientist took seriously all the theories, including Creation and tried to look to God (personally) for the answers.
About your story concerning lethal injection. I am not a doctor but I believe that if a criminal were given an injection of Sodium Penthethal to put them to sleep and then inject them with a syringe of air, this would cause an embolism and death would be within seconds. Please advise me if I am incorrect. Thanks
I think the interview that Brian Williams did tonight was poor on Obama to say the least.. Why no tough questions for this teflon man? What does he stand for? What has he done? No one is asking these questions on this man. Why does the press treat this man differently? Why don't you treat all teh candidates the same? Ask some serious questions and ask voters what they want answers for. After listening to NPR this afternoon on their two debates I learned more about the candidates and I also learned that Edwards and Obama don't answer the questions. NBC used to to do a better job on the news....now you are all about being warm and fuzzy  to each other and forgetting that you are paid to report news and ask the tough questions or does politics and who you are owned by get in the way?????

Thanks for listening........
Rich, you have to click on the link to the Nightly News homepage, not the dailynightly blog. Thats the new site/new video player being discussed.
I cannot find the Netcast on the website.  Is it still there?  I do subscribe to the Podcast but sometimes my computer does not download it each night.  I liked being able to go the the site and see it from there if I missed a day or two.  Please bring it back.
ok so the new site is much more stream lined, I do feel there is less news on it. However, I do see news on the bottom; but have we paid to much attention to the video, maybe. I like how the site is more intereactive...how are we coming on making NN a full hour...
I keep waiting to hear about Obama's background, but never hear anything about his Muslim background and his upbringing.  Does no one wonder where all his money is coming from?  He's virtually unknown and comes out of nowhere with seemingly unlimited funds.  I can't believe this country could possibly be run by someone with the name Barrack Hussein Obama.  This has nothing to do with him being black.  It seems to me everyone is afraid to bring up anything derogatory to Obama and I'm wondering why.
What is with all the ignorance on this blog. I thought people were mature enough to refrain from making making such petty comments. What the does obama's name or religion have anything to do with this presidential race?
Surly members of this blog community are better informed that Ms. Kitts and Mr Ray appear to be. Mr Obama happens to belong to the Church of Christ, a fairly mainstream Christian denomination. As to the money he's raised, the internet has forever changed fund raising, and Mr. Obama seems to have that part down pat. If one wished to delve into Mr Obama's background 2 suggestions, a web search or his own book "Audacity of Hope" would be an excellent start.

But on to my point fellow Nightly Newsers.. Did Hillary shot her self in the foot this afternoon or did she do what she wanted to do and proved herself human?
I like the look and feel of your site, but I was interested in seeing the full interview with Obama. Actually I'm not sure how to find it. When Brian Williams said that if you wanted to view the whole interview go to nightly.msnbc.com I did. When I didn't find it I thought I might be to early so I waited. I refreshed and still cannot find the interview. What's the story do I need to wait until tomorrow?
YES! – This is what I’m looking for. Now remember to keep the content fresh, old news is not news, its history. I’m counting on you to kick CNN’s streaming videos butt!
I can't embed anything to my blog.. I've tried many different blogs.. what's the difference bewtween this and youtube clip...???
I failed to embed these clip from MSNBC.. so sad!!
MSNBC.com:

I used to think you had a good web site.

Where can I find "Watch the netcast for NBC Nightly News"?  You know, M, Tu, W, Th, F?

Where can I find the netcast version of MSNBC shows?  And also CNBC and Today?

I live in South America, and I cannot receive either NBC News, nor Cable MSNBC.

I stopped watching the CBS News Netcast, because their web site was abominable.

You have a "new and improved" web site which is giving CBS a serious run for top bragging rights for "abominableness".

I hope you still have the feature which keeps a "history list" of which segments I have already viewed, and the ability to email this list of "shown" and "ready to be seen".

Okay I understand my problem... I was using firefox as my browser... what was I thinking, I switched to IE and all is well. MSNBC does stand for Microsoft NBC :-)
The new look is nice.  I like how you are able to select videos but there seems to be a problem with the site and because it was not designed with Firefox in mind(maybe).  There is no immediate video playback (this problem was present in your beta).  I have to click on several of the links before any downloading will start.  The end result...a slower and less user friendly site, using my preferred browser Firefox.
Is the only way to get what was the Netcast now through the podcast? Is there anyway to watch NN start to finish now in order?
Solid sight. I like the abundance of videos and - thank goodness - nota commercial before each one. Nice work MSNBC.
How do you watch the webcast now?  If you want to see the whole newscast on line, how do you do it?
In reply to Beverly Kitts from Virginia:

All of the information you're looking for is publicly available via Federal Elections Commission data available on opensecrets.org. A summary is here:
http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/summary.asp?id=N00009638&cycle=2008
The vast majority of Obama's donations have been fully disclosed with donor's name, address, occupation, and place of employment.

If that's not enough, you can look up people from your state and see who they're donating to. You'll find lots of Virginia residents donating to his campaign:
http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/search_donor.asp

As for stating that you can't believe that someone with his name could be elected president, that's unfortunate, since you'll be disqualifying a lot of good people with funny names from holding public office. We don't elect people based on their names; we elect them based on their personal experience and vision. Since you're so skeptical, I'd encourage you to read his first book, "The Audacity of Hope." The book covers his childhood and life as a young man.
I was hoping for streaming live video too. At least of NBC nightly news, if not, MSNBC live too.

Oh well- CBS evening news w/ katie couric it is I guess.
And CNN's live feed then.
I liked to see the TV version of nghtly news.  It was always hard to find on your site, but now I can't find it at all.  Is it toast?
I've got the latest version of adobe 9 and unfortunately most of the videos still don't work.  I love Russert, but it looks like I'm going to have to switch to ABC or CBS to get on-line news in the future.  You guys should have beta tested this on a voluntary basis before you screwed you loyal fan base.
In addition, where did the Nightly News netcast go?
All I want to do is watch tonights nightly news. How can I watch the show? This is impossible!!!!
It is better but I still like the format where I can just watch the nightly news cast. Cannot find the link
why can't you make it easy to select the nightly news webcast from the television broadcast!!!  you made it so rediculous to find it and play it!!!  it used to be on the first page to select.  where did it go!???
I don't like being force-fed video. I hate that as soon as I log on, something starts playing; I should be able to press play. I'm also frustrated with the lack of a search bar. You've made it extremely difficult to find archived video. MSNBC and NBC News should focus more on news gathering and not a fancy website.
How do I view the Monday broadcast as seen on-the-air?
I like some things about the new format, for instance having the ability to look at some of the stories in more detail than your time limit on the broadcast allows....however, my wife would like the option of being able to run the same nightly news program that you run on the broadcast, including Brian's opening and closing statements....I did not see a link on your website that lets you view the nightly news broadcast version.
WHERE'S MY NIGHTLY NEWS. AND YES I AM SHOUTING. I DONT HAVE A "POD" SO PUT UP A LINK IN A CLEAR PLACE OF THE BROADCAST NEWS OR YOU WILL BE LOOSING MILLIONS OF VIEWERS HERE AND ME OF COURSE...
I don't understand people having issues with firefox. The site looks and works great in firefox. Happy to see that msnbc doesn't cater to just the IE browser.
The web only content really expands the breadth of  Nightly News.
I have the same feelings as most others - how do I watch the nightly news from start to finish, cannot find the link, but then agian it might just be me.  If there is not an option to watch the nightly news from start to finish as before, you might want to reconsider your title "NIGHTLY NEWS ESCAPES YOUR TELEVISION" as it has not because I need a television to watch it, which is unavailble where I am currently located.
is it possible to have an area where we can watch the full newscast.  we used to be able to watch the netcast in full, now i do not see the links for those.  could it possibly be posted on the page.  thanks
Where is the Netcast? Nothing is more annoying than trying to piece together the broadcast from small segments when your Playlist function doesn't work correctly (still haven't had it play a single playlist in the order I selected). BRING BACK NETCAST!!!
You've deleted the actual netcasts of the full show--these are just clips.  Where is the full netcast?
Getting rid of access to the broadcast Nightly News was a huge mistake.  The web exclusives are mostly junk/filler.  I don't want this nonsense.

I currently live in Europe.  When I lived in the States I watched ABC World News but their website/webcast stinks, so I switched to you and became a big fan of the Nightly News.  I would have stuck with you when I move back to the States.

You're about to lose me as a viewer/user.
I think the new website is more confusing and I agree with people who say there seems to be less news on it. Furthermore, I cannot find where to watch the daily netcast, is there any way to still watch the news program start to finish in one segment?
I loved your site because of the dropout sidebar menus. I come here for science and tech info and now I cannot find this.

Please bring back the ability to watch the entire newscast (or one from earlier in the week) without having to download it.
I want to be able to watch the Nightly News as it appeared on TV.  I don't get home in time to do so.  It was so much easier before to click on whatever day's newscast you wanted to see.  I've tried doing your copy and link to my PC and an obviously doing something wrong.  I understand your desire to provide more and current information but why make it more difficult to obtain the Nightly News when it was so easy before.  Just point and click.
ive been trying to find the nightly newscast and cant

its my choice to watch the news cast, not the assorted clips

what up
Alexandra -  You've got some splaning to do Lucy!  Having just read 46 comments which are almost all negative about the new and improved web site I hope you will comment in full.  There are very few compliments and some quite upset folks who you will now loose as viewers of the web site and/or the broadcast.  Why would you have eliminated the actual nightly news broadcast from the web...Mr. Williams has been touting it over the last year and I know several people who have beeen watching it on line.  Can you at the least explain why you made that choice?  This web site always has worked best when there is dialogue that is aknowledged by the staff at NBC.  I find that in this case most of the answers to questions are being provided by viewers not you or your staff.  Whenever there are this many comments a response is in order.  It is obvoius your staff has endeavored to make immprovements that favor us and our search for information and credit is due at least from a graphics sense...things are pretty and professional looking...but we come here for content not hype.
Hi,
I cannot find the Netcast on the website.  Is it still there?
Please bring back the ability to watch the entire newscast. I live in Europe and I don`t have the chance to conect everyday to watch the program. I think your new player it is cool but I was hoping for streaming live video too. At least of NBC nightly news, if not, MSNBC live too.
